Affirmative Action’S Asian American Problem, Huyen Pham, Joseph Thai
Affirmative Action’S Asian American Problem, Huyen Pham, Joseph Thai
Loyola of Los Angeles Law Review
Asian American opponents of affirmative action have received both credit and blame for their pivotal role in toppling racial preferences in university admissions in Students for Fair Admissions v. Harvard (SFFA). Allied conservatives highlighted evidence of discrimination against Asian American applicants as a compelling reason to dismantle affirmative action; liberals either denied this discrimination existed or tolerated it as an acceptable cost of helping other minority applicants. But largely unacknowledged is the precipitating history of the Supreme Court’s marginalization of Asian American applicants and its decades of tacit approval of their exclusion from affirmative action programs. This unwritten …

Born To Die: Finding The Right To Healthcare In The History And Tradition Of The Bill Of Rights Amendments, Charles Pablico-Fernandez
Born To Die: Finding The Right To Healthcare In The History And Tradition Of The Bill Of Rights Amendments, Charles Pablico-Fernandez
Loyola of Los Angeles Law Review
In 2022, the Supreme Court overturned federal abortion protection in a single decision. This decision has resulted in inconsistent state action on abortion rights and has produced myriad unforeseen litigation throughout the country. Further, federal abortion protections are unlikely to be signed into law in the near future, leaving the future of abortion rights uncertain. Instead of proposing direct action designed to protect abortion rights, this Note proposes that the road to federal abortion protections first requires recognizing a constitutional right to healthcare. Specifically, this Note argues that a fundamental right to healthcare can be found by examining the history …

Ogletree V. Cleveland State University And The Future Of Remote Learning, Evan Morehouse
Loyola of Los Angeles Law Review
The COVID-19 pandemic placed an unprecedented strain on schools. With students and teachers confined to their homes, school administrators were charged with the unenviable task of finding a way to restore some semblance of normalcy as quickly as possible. The solution was standing in plain sight: take an already existent technology and use it to connect educators to their students on a massive scale. The result: the virtual ubiquity of remote learning tools in schools and universities. But while remote learning software undoubtedly propped up the imperiled education sector, it did so at a cost. In requiring their students to …

Pangenome And Pantranscriptome As The New Reference For Gene-Family Characterization: A Case Study Of Basic Helix-Loop-Helix (Bhlh) Genes In Barley, Cen Tong, Yong Jia, Haifei Hu, Zhanghui Zeng, Brett Chapman, Chengdao Li
Grain and Other Field Crops Research Articles
Genome-wide identification and comparative gene-family analyses have commonly been performed to investigate species-specific evolution linked to various traits and molecular pathways. However, most previous studies have been limited to gene screening in a single reference genome, failing to account for the gene presence/absence variations (gPAVs) in a species. Here, we propose an innovative pangenome-based approach for gene-family analyses based on orthologous gene groups (OGGs). Using the basic helix-loop-helix (bHLH) transcription factor family in barley as an example, we identified 161–176 bHLHs in 20 barley genomes, which can be classified into 201 OGGs. These 201 OGGs were further classified into 140 …
Communication In Noise Is The Window On Cognition, R. Haven Wiley
Communication In Noise Is The Window On Cognition, R. Haven Wiley
Animal Sentience
As Griffin surmised, communication is the window on cognition, but as shown here, only if it is noisy. This commentary is an invitation to consider the full implications of the evolution of noisy communication. A combination of Information Theory, Signal Detection Theory, and Natural Selection, in a unified theory of the evolution of communication, reveals that noise is inevitable. All organisms are thus decision makers. Perception, thought, freedom of decision, self-awareness, metabolism, and natural selection all share the consequences of signals in noise. A full understanding of each requires attention to the errors of receivers. Griffin’s hunch is correct with …

Why Are There 73 Books In The Bible Used By Roman Catholics?, Paul Griffioen
Why Are There 73 Books In The Bible Used By Roman Catholics?, Paul Griffioen
Faculty Work Comprehensive List
What collection of books make up the Bible? Roman Catholics say that there are 73. Protestants say that there are 66. Who is correct, and who decides? After all, the Bible was not written instantaneously as a complete package. There is a history to its formation as a collection of books. A variety of authors wrote these biblical books across multiple time periods. “Long ago, at many times and in many ways, God spoke to our fathers by the prophets” (Hebrews 1:1). Is the Bible just a man-made collection of books put together based on the personal preferences …
Identifiability And Convergence Behavior For Markov Chain Monte Carlo Using Multivariate Probit Models, Xiao Zhang
Identifiability And Convergence Behavior For Markov Chain Monte Carlo Using Multivariate Probit Models, Xiao Zhang
Michigan Tech Publications
Multivariate probit models have been popularly utilized to analysis multivariate ordinal data. However, the identifiable multivariate probit models entail the covariance matrix for the underlying multivariate normal variables to be a correlation matrix, which brings a rigorous task to conduct efficient statistical analysis. Parameter expansion to make the identifiable model to be non-identifiable has been inevitably explored. However, the effect of the expanded parameters on the convergence of Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) is seldomly investigated; in addition, the comparison of MCMC developed based on the identifiable model and that based on the non-identifiable model is hardly ever explored, especially …

Despite the initial hope inspired by the 2015 Paris Agreement, the world is now dangerously close to breaching its target of limiting global multiyear mean heating to 1·5°C. Annual mean surface temperature reached a record high of 1·45°C above the pre-industrial baseline in 2023, and new temperature highs were recorded throughout 2024. The resulting climatic extremes are increasingly claiming lives and livelihoods worldwide.

Background: We previously reported that increases in circulating sphingolipids are associated with elevated risk of biopsy Gleason grade group (GG) upgrading in men on Active Surveillance (AS) for prostate cancer. Here, we aimed to validate these findings and establish a blood-based sphingolipid biomarker panel for identifying men on AS who are at high-risk of biopsy GG upgrading.
Methods: Men diagnosed with low- or intermediate-risk prostate cancer in one of two AS cohorts (CANARY PASS and MDACC) were followed for GG upgrading after diagnostic and confirmatory biopsy. The PASS cohort consisted of 544 patients whereas the MDACC Cohort consisted of 697 …

Objective: There is a known association between type 2 diabetes (diabetes) and tuberculosis (TB), and TB clinics have become hubs for new diabetes diagnosis among active patients with TB. However, despite the potential to identify diabetes patients, resources limit diabetes screening opportunities to close TB contacts. We assessed the cost-effectiveness of adding opportunistic screening for diabetes during the routine TB contact investigations conducted at TB clinics.
Research design and methods: We used a Markov-based model to simulate the costs of diabetes screening, management and health outcomes, including the incidence of complications and death. All costs were considered from a health …

Research outputs 2014 to 2021
This paper explores online brand advocacy (OBA) in a tourism destination context. Through a Social Influence Theory lens, it explores the ways in which residents and overseas tourists discuss Australia as a destination brand on social media. By analyzing a big dataset of social media user-generated content (UGC), this study sought to identify the key dimensions evident in positively valenced social media UGC, to see whether these dimensions varied between residents and overseas tourists, and to see whether the dimensions reflected OBA. The analyses found online destination brand advocacy (ODBA) had five dimensions: Destination Acknowledgement (hashtags), Destination Insights, Destination Positivity …

BACKGROUND: Sacituzumab govitecan is an antibody-drug conjugate that is FDA approved for refractory metastatic triple-negative breast cancer. It targets the human trophoblastic cell-surface antigen 2 (Trop-2) with SN-38, a topoisomerase I inhibitor, attached to the antibody [1]. SN-38 breaks DNA strands and induces tumor apoptosis [2]. Acute kidney injury (AKI) is one of its adverse effects mainly prerenal due to gastrointestinal toxicity, but it has not been reported to cause acute tubulointerstitial nephritis (ATIN).
CASE PRESENTATION: This report describes a rare adverse effect of sacituzumab govitecan, the approach to diagnosing the etiology of the patient's AKI, and the mechanism by …

Accessible mammography datasets and innovative machine learning techniques are at the forefront of computer-aided breast cancer diagnosis. However, the opacity surrounding private datasets and the unclear methodology behind the selection of subset images from publicly available databases for model training and testing, coupled with the arbitrary incompleteness or inaccessibility of code, markedly intensifies the obstacles in replicating and validating the model's efficacy. These challenges, in turn, erect barriers for subsequent researchers striving to learn and advance this field. To address these limitations, we provide a pilot codebase covering the entire process from image preprocessing to model development and evaluation pipeline, …

Human Impact On Ancient Environments. By Charles L. Redman, James D. Lowry, Jr
The Geographical Bulletin
Having just taught conservation of natural resources to a small group of students over the summer, and just gearing up to teach it again in the fall, current environmental problems were foremost in my mind as I picked up Human Impact on Ancient Environments. Although my research background includes the Mayan culture area of MesoAmerica (via an interdisciplinary mix of geographers, archaeologists, and others) and I discuss their maladaptive environmental strategies in class, I offer them only briefly as an example of population growth and its relationship to environmental damage. My focus is on the present. In Human Impact Redman …

The Coming Age Of Scarcity: Preventing Mass Death And Genocide In The Twenty First Century. By Michael N. Dobkowski And Isidor Wallimann (Eds.), James D. Lowry, Jr
The Geographical Bulletin
The Coming Age of Scarcity is a collection of essays examining the relationship between population growth and resource depletion and genocide (and the collapse of our civilization!). The authors immediately jump into a fatalistic doomsday scenario. The Foreword, by John K. Roth, has the essence of strong anticapitalism bias. For example, Roth states “the great transformation from agricultural to . . . industrial societies has always been on the back of peasants” (4), refers to Eastern Europe as “once a highly selfsufficient economic and political system” (13), and states “markets, if left to themselves, cannot factor in long-term scarcity” (14). …

Fieldwork Dilemmas is a collection of essays from 10 anthropologists’ experiences in postsocialist eastern Europe. The primary focus is not to recount the results of their ethnographic research, but to detail the many problems and dangers they encountered in conducting the research in communities undergoing tremendous change in almost every facet of life. Research reports from Armenia, Macedonia, Serbia, eastern Germany, Kyrgystan, Siberia, Uzbekistan, and Bulgaria are included into three collections.

The ACT scores reported by county are broken down into various racial and ethnic groupings, and a Geographic Information System was used to map and explore the spatial dimensions of the data. The results of the analysis indicate that performance on the ACT varies by the type of county involved, and is linked to family income rather than to race per se. …
