A Qualitative Exploration Of Associate Degree Nurse Educators' Teaching Experiences Regarding Health Literacy, Connie Marshall
A Qualitative Exploration Of Associate Degree Nurse Educators' Teaching Experiences Regarding Health Literacy, Connie Marshall
Dissertations
Worldwide health literacy levels are low. Nurses should be able to lead the improvement of the health literacy of the populations they serve. During a comprehensive review of the literature, it became apparent that previous research regarding the provision of health literacy education within Associate Degree Nursing programs was not available. The Associate Degree is the initial degree that allows the graduate to take the NCLEX-RN board exam, so it was interesting to determine how learners are prepared to discern the health literacy levels of the patient population. The research question, "How do nurse educators describe their experiences with health …

Collapse Of Pre-Covid-19 Differences In Performance In Online Vs. In-Person College Science Classes, And Continued Decline In Student Learning, Gregg R. Davidson, Hong Xiao, Kristin Davidson
Faculty and Student Publications
Abstract: Studies comparing student outcomes for online vs. in-person classes have reported mixed results, though with a majority finding that lower-performing students, on average, fare worse in online classes, attributed to the lack of built-in structure provided by in-person instruction. The online/in-person outcome disparity was normative for non-major geology classes at the University of Mississippi prior to COVID-19, but the difference disappeared in the years after 2020. Previously distinct trendlines of GPA-based predictions of earned-grade for online and in-person classes merged. Of particular concern, outcomes for in-person classes declined to match pre-COVID-19 online expectations, with lower-GPA students disproportionally impacted. Objective …

Nursing Research & Professional Development Conference
Background and/or Rationale: Multiple factors influence patient’s length of a stay (LOS). Studies examining patient demographics, hospital characteristics, and diagnoses indicate that older age, certain diagnoses, and admission to critical care units are associated with longer LOS.
Local Problem: At a non-profit hospital in the Midwest, nurses identified challenges in achieving reductions in the budgeted LOS for adults admitted to inpatient units.
Method: To reduce budgeted LOS, multidisciplinary rounds (MDRs) were optimized through a methodical approach involving direct observation, process mapping, and root cause analysis. A Length of Stay Committee was established, standardizing MDR practices and integrating these into workflows. …

Nursing Research & Professional Development Conference
Background
Informed consent protects the rights of patients and guides the ethical practice of clinicians. Patient satisfaction is related to the quality and adequacy of information provided to them (Guzman & Amosco, 2021). Informed consent policies are typically written around surgical procedures and often do not provide the unique details around the process in radiation oncology.
Local Problem
During the investigation of care events, the nursing director noted differing practices around timing, use of plain language, and a lack of a standardized approach to obtaining consent. A major contributing factor was consents were not obtained during the consult when the …

Background/Introduction
While peripheral intravenous catheter (PIVC) insertion is a common procedure, literature states most nurses do not have formal training in school or clinical practice opportunities on this skill. When performed incorrectly, PIVC insertion has negative implications including increased length of stay, poor patient outcomes, and inflated costs. On average, the Vascular Access Team (VAT) completes 1,200 consults per month and the turnaround time is 2h 42m, leading to delays in care.
Purpose
This activity's intent was to implement a tiered educational approach to improve adult inpatient nurses' knowledge and skills on PIVC placement; thus, decreasing VAT consults and delays …

Background:
Unintended perioperative hypothermia (UPH) increases complications including surgical site infections (SSIs), which reduce patient outcomes and increase personal and financial costs.
Hypothesis:
Adding a thermo-reflective blanket on top of warming standard of care (WSOC) will reduce UPH, SSI, post-op length of stay (POLOS), and financial costs.
Methods:
We used a prospective, single-blinded randomized controlled trial (RCT). The control group received warming standard of care (WSOC); the intervention group received thermo-reflective blanket(s) in addition to the WSOC. The WSOC includes passive insulation of warmed cotton blankets and thermo-reflective head coverings with active warming of forced air. Odds ratios, student’s t-test, …
Reducing Patient Turnaround Time From The Emergency Department To Freestanding Behavioral Health Facility, Brooke Stephens Msn, Rn, Pmh-Bc
Reducing Patient Turnaround Time From The Emergency Department To Freestanding Behavioral Health Facility, Brooke Stephens Msn, Rn, Pmh-Bc
Nursing Research & Professional Development Conference
Background: Mental health encounters in the emergency department have proven to have a longer length of stay compared to medical encounters, which are associated with poor safety and health outcomes. Mental health patients can experience decompensation of their condition due to the more disruptive milieu and the lack of specialized treatment in the emergency department.
Local Problem: Transferring patients to an inpatient behavioral health facility in a timely manner is of utmost importance; however, the freestanding psychiatric facility has limited resources for complex medical needs requiring medical clearance to be obtained in the emergency department. From September – December 2022, …

Nursing Research & Professional Development Conference
Background
In January 2023, the length of stay (LOS) for the observation (OBS) unit was 2.7 days. The care delivery was one of inpatient and observation in which there was little focus on LOS.
Local Problem
There were capacity challenges due to volume in the hospital with multiple overflow units open and extended LOS in the emergency department (ED) which led to increased boarding times of admitted patients.
Method
After working with the performance improvement (LEAN) specialist, the observation leadership identified a team of interdisciplinary stakeholders and began rapid cycle biweekly plan, do, study, act (PDSAs) on the journey to …

Nursing Research & Professional Development Conference
Background
Chemotherapy is known to cause peripheral neuropathy (PN) in 30-60% of patients, with no effective treatments once symptoms occur. Chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN) can lead to treatment delays, dose reductions/discontinuation, poor treatment outcomes, and reduced function and quality of life. Cryotherapy is thought to limit circulation of chemotherapy into periphery limiting nerve damage. Prophylactic cryotherapy has been shown to reduce CIPN.
Purpose
PICOT: In adult cancer patients initiating chemotherapy (P), what is the effect of implementing an evidence-based cryotherapy intervention during chemotherapy treatments (I), compared with standard care (C), on patient-reported sensory peripheral neuropathy (toxicity symptom) (O) during chemotherapy …

Fresh Faces To Icu Aces: Boosting Confidence And Retention For New Graduate Nurses In Intensive Care, Angela Flynn Msn, Rn, Lindsey Merrick Bsn, Rn
Nursing Research & Professional Development Conference
Introduction: In 2022, the intensive care division experienced an increased nurse turnover of 21.9% compared to a 13.1% organizational benchmark, and a first-year retention rate of 76% for new graduate nurses. In 2023, the division hired seven times more new graduate nurses than pre-pandemic. Leaders identified gaps in critical thinking, specialty-specific knowledge, and practice among new graduate nurses. The established enterprise new graduate residency program did not successfully bridge the gap from new graduate novice to intensive care nurse.
Purpose: To provide an in-person, post-orientation new graduate nurse residency program to increase confidence, personal wellness, and first year retention.
Method: …
