With the increasing linguistic diversity rapidly expanding in the United States of America’s (U.S.A.) educational and health care systems, speech-language pathologists (SLPs) are increasingly being asked to provide services to individuals who come from multilingual/multicultural backgrounds (American Speech-Language-Hearing Association, n.d.). Among these, there are the Tamil-speaking community, representing a classical Dravidian language that has more than 80 million native speakers worldwide (Proof, 2019) and sizeable diasporas in the U.S.A.

This interdisciplinary Tamil guide provides SLPs with the foundational knowledge and information about Tamil phonetics and morphosyntax, while also emphasizing the need for a culturally responsive tool for assessment. This guide …

Depth Of Processing Re-Examined: Semantic Superiority Persists Despite Increased Lexical Task Demands, Porter Roth, Devon Winder, Cohen Thatcher, Matthew Lynn

The present study investigates whether semantic or lexical judgement tasks yield deeper encoding and higher recall accuracy in working and short-term memory. Using the Levels of Processing theory framework, we compared a semantic categorization question, “Is this an animal?” with a more cognitively effortful lexical question, “Is this a word backwards?” to test whether increased cognitive effort improves recall over mental categorization. A self-selecting sample of 31 Utah State University students completed a within-subjects experiment with an encoding phase followed by a recall phase. Word stimuli were controlled for length, frequency, phonological simplicity, and concreteness. Results showed significantly higher recall …

Hepatitis B remains a major public health problem in Indonesia. This study assessed the knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) of hepatitis B patients in Jakarta to identify gaps in prevention and control and to explore relationships among KAP components. A cross-sectional study was conducted among 128 patients at a government hospital in South Jakarta, using a structured questionnaire that collected demographic information and assessed knowledge, attitudes, and practices regarding hepatitis B transmission and prevention. Despite moderate knowledge levels, major gaps remained. Only a small proportion (10.9%) correctly identified common symptoms, transmission routes (10.2%), and possible complications (18.8%). The achievement of the Minimum Service Standards (MSS) in Yahukimo District, Highland Papua Province, Indonesia, warrants examination. This study aimed to analyze factors associated with the achievement of health service targets among Public Health Centers (PHCs) in Yahukimo District. An ecological study design was employed. The participants were 400 health workers from 33 PHCs and were examined using Likert-scale questionnaires. Data were processed using Structural Equation Modeling-Partial Least Squares (SEM-PLS) to assess the association of each variable. Similarly, the focus and direction of an individual's attention can impact these processes both negatively and positively. This study sought to examine whether deep encoding requires semantic analysis, or if phonological tasks that promote holistic analysis are adequate. Herein, silica nanoparticles (SNs) with different functional groups (propyl amine, propyl thiol, propyl carboxylic acid and unmodified hydroxyl) were loaded with the anticancer agent lomustine (LMS) and conjugated with Folic Acid (FA) to produce FA-NH₂-SNs, FA-SH-SNs, FA-COOH-SNs, and FA-OH-SNs, respectively. The nanoparticles (NPs) were characterized using Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and Dynamic Light Scattering (DLS). Encapsulation Efficiency (EE) and drug release rate were measured using UV Spectrophotometer. The in vitro cytotoxicity toward HeLa and VERO cells was assessed using MTT assay. In this study, a novel analytical reagent based on arsenazo III immobilized on a polymer matrix composed of polyacrylonitrile, polyethylene polyamine, and dichloroethane (PPD) was developed and applied for the spectrophotometric determination of Pb(II) ions. The proposed method demonstrated standard analytical and metrological characteristics for the highly accurate determination of Pb(II) ions, as evidenced by a relative standard deviation (Sr) of 0.06 and a minimum detectable concentration (C_min) of 0.24 μ g/L. This dissertation answers two basic questions: what are the effects of aggregate demand on the long-run level of economic activity, and how do exogenous changes in the bargaining power of workers affect macroeconomic performance? The first chapter, written with Steven Fazzari, extends a simple Keynesian growth model to show that demand shocks can have permanent effects on labor productivity and labor supply. Estimating the model on U.S. data, we find that positive demand shocks raise labor productivity persistently, implying that stronger demand increases the long-run level of economic activity. This study examines structural mobility access across New York City census tracts by constructing a tract-level Mobility Access Index (MAI) that integrates employment accessibility, hospital accessibility, and first-mile subway walking burden using MTA GTFS transit data, NYC Taxi and Limousine Commission trip records, and US Census American Community Survey demographic estimates. Three OLS regression models, supplemented by Lasso, Elastic Net, and Random Forest specifications, test whether structural access gaps are associated with short-distance connector trip intensity and per-worker connector cost burden. Results show that MAI varies substantially across tracts, with high access concentrated in Manhattan and along major subway corridors. …

Recognizing the coupling between ferroelectricity and chirality in optically active ferroelectrics opens a route for manipulating chirality via ferroelectricity under an external electric field, enabling control over chirality-dependent quantum states. Here, we report the experimental demonstration of the coupling between ferroelectricity and phonon chirality in the molecular ferroelectric triglycine sulfate. By electrically switching the crystal chirality, we achieve reversible and device-compatible control of phonon chirality, as revealed by in situ time-resolved magneto-optical Kerr effect measurements. The Kerr rotation reverses with electric-field switching, while phonon chirality vanishes in the paraelectric phase and is tunable in the racemic ferroelectric state. Furthermore, density …

Employee engagement among women has historically been subsumed within general employee engagement research. Additionally, employee engagement is often conceptualized as independent from one’s career stage. The present study explored these assumptions by examining employee engagement among women and how organizational factors may differentially promote engagement across career stages. The Kaleidoscope Career Model served as the theoretical foundation, proposing that authenticity, balance, and challenge are particularly salient for women in early-, mid-, and late-career stages, respectively.
