Philosophy And Modernity, André Cloots
Philosophy And Modernity, André Cloots
Budhi: A Journal of Ideas and Culture
What can still be the meaning of philosophy in modernity? The core of modernity is “liberty, equality, and fraternity through rationality.” The last element, viz. rationality, however, implies that modernity is at once a critical analysis of its own core. Reason is intrinsically linked to critique, even to a critique of modernity’s own basics, including its rationality. Therefore, modernity is not something ‘substantial’ but rather a process. Nor is it a matter of reducing everything to the same – the same of reason; but on the contrary, it is a new way of dealing with plurality. This affects also the …
The Problem Of Technology In Maruyama Masao's Notion Of Modernity In Japan's "Overcoming Modernity" Debate In 1942, Koga Takao
Budhi: A Journal of Ideas and Culture
The purpose of this essay is to rethink the meaning of modernity through an examination of Maruyama’s defense of modernity during the “Overcoming of Modernity” Debate in Japan in 1942. I will initially propose that Maruyama understood the opponents of modernity as ultra-nationalists who were merely defending an ideological justification for Japan’s war. However, Maruyama defined “modern thinking” (kindaiteki shii) in terms of personal autonomy. His understanding of modernity as a mental attitude led to his failure to consider the technological aspect of this debate. After considering the various intellectual positions on this issue, I shall argue that a democratic …

Re-Imagining Professional Learning For Teachers: A Reflection On The Transformative Experience Of An Organic Inquiry., Desiree J. Gilbert Dr
Journal of Contemplative and Holistic Education
Challenged, frustrated and motivated by my observation and sense that learning experiences are often designed and facilitated with an emphasis on criticality over creativity, I engaged in PhD studies to explore the question, How can expanding my understanding of creativity and its connection to learning assist me to re-imagine professional learning for teachers so that their learning experiences are enhanced? In this article I discuss how my practice as a professional learning facilitator for teachers transformed through this study. In particular I describe my experiences and findings from my open exploration of creativity as a phenomenon and how the organic …

Randomized Pilot Study Examining An Online Diet Intervention To Increase Intake Of Fruits And Vegetables Among Healthy Adults, Diana Kolb, Sarah Deemer, Eva Claire Synkowski, Stephanie Silveira
International Journal of Exercise Science
International Journal of Exercise Science 17(2): 1618-1628, 2024. Intake of fruits and vegetables (F&V) is related to health outcomes. The purpose of the study was to test an online diet program promoting F&V intake among healthy adults. Twenty-three participants were randomly assigned to complete an 8-week intervention condition (#800gChallenge®) or wait-list control condition. In weeks 1-4, intervention participants were asked to interact with an application reporting (a) whether they met their daily 800g F&V goal, (b) if their 800g of F&V was from a variety of sources, and (c) reading of daily educational material. Weeks 1-4 included weekly Zoom check-in …

Global Collaboration Through Balanced Engagement In A Virtual Exchange Project, Carrie Eunyoung Hong, Christopher Herbert, Geon-Ah Choi
Global Collaboration Through Balanced Engagement In A Virtual Exchange Project, Carrie Eunyoung Hong, Christopher Herbert, Geon-Ah Choi
i.e.: inquiry in education
Virtual exchange emerges as a high-impact practice in global learning. Leveraging online technology, this pedagogical approach offers intercultural learning opportunities among students across borders. This study explored collaboration between U.S. and South Korean college students by examining student learning and engagement in virtual exchange. The virtual exchange project in this study was designed to enrich U.S. students’ learning of Korean songs and enhance their vocal performance. Utilizing the Community of Inquiry (COI) framework, we analyzed student engagement across cognitive, social, and academic dimensions to assess the effectiveness of the virtual exchange project. Findings revealed that the presence of cognitive, social, …

Impact Of Video Lesson Analysis On Preservice Elementary Teachers' Teaching And Learning, Dr. Eun Kyung Ko
i.e.: inquiry in education
This study examines the impact of video-based learning on preservice elementary teachers, focusing on the use of ATLAS and Teaching Channel video resources. The research addresses the increasing reliance on video analysis for teacher preparation. Two groups of preservice teachers participated, including those already working in educational settings and career changers new to the field. The study employed a mixed-methods approach, analyzing exit surveys, focus group interviews, and video reflections. Findings reveal that while ATLAS videos provided valuable commentary and classroom observation opportunities, concerns were raised about video quality and realism. Comparisons to Teaching Channel videos highlighted the need for …

Engaging In Reform-Oriented Collaborative Inquiry To Advance Competency-Based Learning In Teacher Education, Alan S. Tinkler, Jessica Demink-Carthew, Carmen P. Smith, Barri E. Tinkler
i.e.: inquiry in education
Competency-based learning (CBL) systems are becoming more common in K-12 schools across the country. There are a range of studies that demonstrate the effectiveness of CBL for students, but there is less research on the manner in which CBL is being adopted in teacher education. This self-study, using a Reform-Oriented Collaborative Inquiry protocol, offers insights into the affordances and challenges for faculty who were embedding the state’s CBL principles into their classrooms. This study illuminates the work of teacher educators seeking to develop a coherent system that models effective CBL practice for preservice teachers. The findings unpack particularities with respect …

Adult Learning And Teacher Inquiry: A Natural Match?, Stephen P. Gordon Dr., Jovita M. Ross-Gordon Dr.
i.e.: inquiry in education
This paper considers the potential benefits of integrating the knowledge base on adult learning with teacher inquiry. The first part of the paper provides an overview of key concepts discussed in the literature on adult learning, including the characteristics of adult learners, self-directed learning, experiential learning, transformative learning, and adult learning in groups. The next part of the paper is focused specifically on collaborative inquiry as adult learning, reviewing the purposes, principles, process, and facilitation of such inquiry found in the knowledge base on adult learning. The third part of the paper reviews literature on successful teacher inquiry and describes …

Kinetics, Thermodynamics, And Biological Characterizations Of Hydrolysates Enzymatically Produced From Proteins Extracted From Microalgae, Hebah Al Amodi
Thesis/ Dissertation Defenses
This thesis aims to explore the use of Zeolitic Imidazolate Framework-L (ZIF-L) as a support for immobilizing alcalase and its potency in producing protein hydrolysates. ZIF-L was synthesized at room temperature using an aqueous solution, and alcalase was immobilized through adsorption batch experiment. The successful immobilization of alcalase on ZIF-L was confirmed through Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The maximum adsorption capacity of alcalase on ZIF-L was determined to be 672.1 ± 5.5 mg g-1 at 40°C using an initial protein concentration of 5 mg mL-1. Adsorption equilibrium data suggested …
