Tech-Savvy Fraud Investigators In An Age Of Digital Deception, Alan Saquella Nov 2024

Tech-Savvy Fraud Investigators In An Age Of Digital Deception, Alan Saquella

Publications

The recent court conviction of cryptocurrency exchange founder Sam Bankman-Fried on charges of fraud and conspiracy related to the collapse of FTX has heightened the critical need for the next generation of fraud investigators to possess advanced technical skills. This high-profile case serves as a main indicator in the fight against white-collar crime and emphasizes the glaring reality that traditional investigative methods are no longer sufficient to fight modern-day financial bad behavior. As we witness an increase in white-collar crime on a global scale, the pressure for a new generation of fraud investigators, fortified with an advanced skill set, has …

Adam And The Names, Saqib Hussain Nov 2024

Adam And The Names, Saqib Hussain

Theological Studies Faculty Works

This paper examines the naming episode in the Quran's Adam story, in which God teaches Adam “the names, all of them”, to counter the angels' objection to the creation of the human creature on the basis that he will “spread corruption … and will shed blood”. I try to show that the traditional understanding of this narrative in Western scholarship, which connects it ultimately to the Genesis 2 episode in which Adam names all the creatures of the land and sky, fails to do justice to a close reading of the quranic text itself. Instead, I argue for an alternative …

Evaluating The Superiority Of Multimodal Analgesia Over Opioid-Based Analgesia In Postoperative Pain Management For Total Knee Arthroplasty: A Comprehensive Integrative Review, Janna Smith, Mahdi Mofazali, Nya-Qien Smith Nov 2024

Evaluating The Superiority Of Multimodal Analgesia Over Opioid-Based Analgesia In Postoperative Pain Management For Total Knee Arthroplasty: A Comprehensive Integrative Review, Janna Smith, Mahdi Mofazali, Nya-Qien Smith

Master's Projects

With total knee arthroplasty (TKA), postoperative pain management is so important for optimal recovery and patient outcomes. This integrative review evaluates the effectiveness of multimodal analgesia (MMA) compared to traditional opioid-based analgesia in reducing pain and opioid consumption post-TKA. Research shows that MMA is very effective at providing adequate pain relief, reducing side effects, and also decreasing opioid use. MMA also addresses both the specific needs of individual patients and the broader public health issue of opioid dependence. However, a significant barrier to widespread adoption is the absence of standardized protocols. This review sets forth the importance of coming up …

Novel Cuprotosis-Related Gene Signature: A Prognostic Indicator And Regulator Of The Glioma Immune Microenvironment, Dongming Gao, Youyuan Bao, Wenyin Shi, Lei Li, Liang Gao

Department of Radiation Oncology Faculty Papers

Background: Glioma is a primary malignant brain tumor with a poor prognosis. Glioma-related biomarkers need to be identified to enable the personalized treatment of and predict the prognosis of glioma patients. Cuproptosis is an unusual mechanism of cell death, and is closely associated with disease progression and the immune-microenvironment of the tumor. However, the function of cuproptosis in glioma is still unclear, therefore the aim of this study was to investigate the role of cuproptosis-related genes in gliomas.

Methods: We examined the relationship between cuproptosis and glioma using the clinical and expression data of glioma tumors from The Cancer Genome …

How To Discipline Financial Markets: Reputation Is Not Enough, Maria Bigoni, Gabriele Camera, Marco Casari Nov 2024

How To Discipline Financial Markets: Reputation Is Not Enough, Maria Bigoni, Gabriele Camera, Marco Casari

ESI Working Papers

Historically, shocks originating in the financial sector often spilled over into the real sector with dramatic consequences. We study in the lab how interventions targeting disclosure and capital requirements of financial intermediaries can reduce insolvencies or prevent their negative effects from propagating to the broader economy. In our two-sector economy, consumers and producers can fund financial intermediaries, who, in turn, provide them with liquidity to settle trades. However, intermediaries may undertake risky investments and become insolvent, which depresses real economic activity. In the experiment, insolvencies were frequent. As a consequence, consumers and producers often refused to fund intermediaries, which lowered …

Bourne V. Valdes, 140 Nev. Adv. Op. 74 (Nov. 27, 2024), Nathan Wanlass

Nevada Supreme Court Summaries

Nevada’s professional negligence statute—NRS 41A—is the governing law for malpractice cases where a patient dies by suicide. Nevada has no suicide rule that alleviates a medical provider from liability if a patient dies of suicide outside of the provider’s control and custody. Instead, the court must make factual findings to determine ordinary medical malpractice elements for a suicide case, including Duty, Breach, Foreseeability, and Proximate Causation. If a provider’s actions could foreseeably lead a patient to commit suicide, they can be held liable.

Saticoy Bay Llc Ser. 3580 Lost Hills Vs. Foreclosure Recovery Ser., Llc [State Of Nevada], 140 Nev. Adv. Op. 75 (Nov. 27, 2024), Elizabeth Swenson

Nevada Supreme Court Summaries

The Court ruled that the beneficiary to a will who is devised real property may act as the testator’s successor in interest for purposes of Nevada’s redemption statute, NRS 116.31166 . In reaching this conclusion, the Court applied longstanding Nevada precedent and various canons of statutory interpretation to hold that the beneficiary is immediately vested with beneficial interest in the property at the time of the testator’s death. The Court clarified that this interest is distinct from title, and that there is no requirement that the will be probated prior to asserting this interest.

Eleven Quick Tips For Properly Handling Tabular Data, Marla Hertz, Ashley Mcneill Nov 2024

Eleven Quick Tips For Properly Handling Tabular Data, Marla Hertz, Ashley Mcneill

Libraries Professional Work

Proper handling of tabular data, i.e., spreadsheets, is an essential skill for most researchers. Well-curated tabular data has built-in quality control, is machine readable by downstream analysis applications, and ultimately saves researchers’ time. The increased expectation of data sharing grounded by funder and publisher policies has made it even more crucial to format and describe tabular data properly to ensure that it is FAIR—findable, accessible, interoperable, and reusable [1]. However, many researchers are not formally trained in the data management skills necessary to build strong tabular datasets. They may also struggle to anticipate the future needs and potential applications of …

A 40-year-old male patient with no significant past history presented to the emergency room with bilateral upper and lower extremity numbness and difficulty walking for three weeks. MRI of the thoracic spine revealed cord signal abnormalities in the dorsal columns consistent with selective degeneration. This was congruent with the patient's presentation and symptoms of myelopathy with dorsal column involvement along with peripheral polyneuropathy. Nitrous oxide inhalation was the culprit, causing acute vitamin B12 deficiency and subsequent myeloneuropathies.

Background: The congruence or discordance between actual and perceived balance ability has been proposed to be linked to functional outcomes such as falls. However, gaps remain in our ability to quantify discordance, and its relationship to relevant outcomes.

Objective: To investigate a novel quantification of concordance/discordance between balance performance and perception and determine the relationship to falls among people with Parkinson’s disease (PwPD).

Methods: Data from 244 PwPD were aggregated from 5 previously conducted studies. Variables extracted included age, sex, Activities-Specific Balance Confidence scale (ABC; perceived balance), Timed Up and Go (TUG; balance performance), Movement Disorder Society Unified Parkinson Disease …

Beyond Climate In Placencia, Belize: Navigating Environmental Change In The Anthropocene, Rory E. Mckenna Nov 2024

Beyond Climate In Placencia, Belize: Navigating Environmental Change In The Anthropocene, Rory E. Mckenna

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Examining opportunities for climate resilience requires an evaluation of lived experiences of environmental change which benefits from transdisciplinary perspectives. This research examines those experiences through the lens of anthropogenic change which allows for a critical focus on local conditions of environmental change specific to Placencia Village, Belize, over time. An anthropology of the anthropocene framing shifts the focus from the results of the global phenomenon responsible for climate change to the implications of local human-caused environmental change on natural systems, human-environment relationships and dynamics, and the future trajectories of these relationships. Through the use of interviews, go-alongs, participatory mapping, transdisciplinary …

Creating A Sense Of Place When Implementing A New Emergency Department In Denmark: A Qualitative Study, Jeanette Wassar Kirk, Per Nilsen, Ove Andersen, Nina Thórný Stefánsdóttir, Mette Bendtz Lindstrøm, Byron J Powell, Tine Tjørnhøj-Thomsen

2020-Current year OA Pubs

BACKGROUND: Physical locations play an essential yet often overlooked role in healthcare implementation processes. Implementation Science frameworks such as the Theoretical Domains Framework, the Consolidated Framework for Implementation Research, and the Implementation in Context framework acknowledge the importance of the physical environment, but they often treat it as a passive backdrop for change. However, from a cultural geographic perspective, spaces and places are dynamic, influencing behavior, social structures, and the acceptance of new practices. This study aims to explore how managers and emloyees develop a sense of place in a new emergency department (ED) and how these spatial dynamics influence …

Pediatric Renal Cell Carcinoma (Prcc) Subpopulation Environmental Differentials In Survival Disadvantage Of Black/African American Children In The United States: Large-Cohort Evidence, Laurens Holmes, Phatismo Masire, Arieanna Eaton, Robert Mason, Mackenzie Holmes, Justin William, Maura Poleon, Michael Enwere

College of Population Health Faculty Papers

OBJECTIVE: Renal cell carcinoma (RCC) is a rare but severe and aggressive pediatric malignancy. While incidence is uncommon, survival is relatively low with respect to acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL), AML, lymphoma, ependymoma, glioblastoma, and Wilms Tumor. The pediatric renal cell carcinoma (pRCC) incidence, cumulative incidence (period prevalence), and mortality vary by health disparities' indicators, namely sex, race, ethnicity, age at tumor diagnosis, and social determinants of health (SDHs) as well as Epigenomic Determinants of Health (EDHs). However, studies are unavailable on some pRCC risk determinants, such as area of residence and socio-economic status (SES). The current study aimed at assessing …

A Patent And A Prize, Keith N. Hylton Nov 2024

A Patent And A Prize, Keith N. Hylton

Faculty Scholarship

This paper examines a simple and old question: should innovators receive a patent or a prize? The answer I provide is equally simple: they should receive both. The literature on patents versus prizes has proceeded mostly under the assumption that there should be a choice between a regime of patents and a regime of prizes in which patents fall into the public domain upon award of the prize. There are significant “public choice costs” under the prize plans. By this I mean there are risks of inappropriate transfers to patentees – that is, looting – and of confiscation of patentees, …
