Dynamics Of Flexible Freestanding Structures Under Ground Motion Excitation, Seyed Mohammadreza Farooghi Mehr Dec 2024

Dynamics Of Flexible Freestanding Structures Under Ground Motion Excitation, Seyed Mohammadreza Farooghi Mehr

Dissertations and Doctoral Documents, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 2023–

Freestanding structures are characterized by being unattached at the base, exhibiting rigid or flexible motion under ground motion excitation with various potential responses including rocking (rotation at the base about corner points), pure sliding, slide-rocking, and overturning. While rigid freestanding structures have been extensively studied, the behavior of flexible freestanding structures—particularly the interaction between modes involving sliding—remains underexplored. Existing literature has focused on the deformation and rocking motions of flexible freestanding structures through both analytical and experimental approaches, which have shown indications of sliding at the base. These findings highlight the necessity of incorporating sliding motion into analytical models to …

Do Commercial Ties Influence Esg Ratings? Evidence From Moody's And S&P, Xuanbo Li, Yun Lou, Liandong Zhang Dec 2024

Do Commercial Ties Influence Esg Ratings? Evidence From Moody's And S&P, Xuanbo Li, Yun Lou, Liandong Zhang

Research Collection School Of Accountancy

We provide the first evidence that conflicts of interest arising from commercial ties lead to bias in environmental, social, and governance (ESG) ratings. Using the acquisitions of Vigeo Eiris and RobecoSAM by Moody's and S&P as shocks to the commercial ties between ESG rating agencies and their rated firms, we show that, after their acquisitions by the credit rating agencies (CRAs), ESG rating agencies issue higher ratings to existing paying clients of the CRAs. This effect is greater for firms that have more intensive business relationships with the CRAs, but weaker for firms with more transparent ESG disclosures or higher …

Flexible Vs. Dedicated Technology Choice In The Presence Of Multiproduct Subscription Programs, Liling Lu, Onur Boyabatli, Sarah Yini Gao Dec 2024

Flexible Vs. Dedicated Technology Choice In The Presence Of Multiproduct Subscription Programs, Liling Lu, Onur Boyabatli, Sarah Yini Gao

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Recently, automotive manufacturers have started offering multi-car subscription programs that give customers access to a menu of car models with possibility of switching between the models. The maintenance and depreciation costs during the program are borne by the manufacturers before the cars are sold in the pre-owned market. This paper studies how offering such a subscription program shapes the firm’s flexible versus dedicated technology choice and capacity investment decisions. We consider a two-product firm that makes these decisions under uncertain demand in a single subscription period. The firm faces two types of demand based on which product is requested at …

An Integrative, Systematic Review Of The Situational Judgment Test Literature, Sven Kepes, Sheila K. Keener, Filip Lievens, Michael A. Mcdaniel

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Situational judgment tests (SJTs) are popular assessment approaches that present scenarios describing situations that one may experience in a job. Due to its long history and cross-disciplinary nature, today’s SJT literature is quite fragmented. In this integrative review, we start by systematically taking stock and synthesizing the SJT literature from the different scientific disciplines via bibliometric techniques on 524 unique documents. We identify six literature clusters (i.e., SJTs in the medical sciences, SJTs in personnel selection, methodological issues and SJTs for specific constructs, SJTs to assess emotional intelligence and related constructs, technological advances in SJTs, SJTs for teacher assessment and …

Optimization Of Long-Acting Erythropoietin Stimulating Agents In Dialysis Patients During Transitions Of Care To A Community Hospital, Ryan Falcon, Erika Dittmar, Radhan Gopalani, Stephanie Palma, Heidi Clarke, Jessica Wine, Leyner Martinez

Nursing & Health Sciences Research Journal

Introduction: Many outpatient dialysis centers have transitioned to long-acting erythropoietin-stimulating agents (ESAs). However, upon admission to a hospital, long-acting ESAs are often overlooked during the medication reconciliation process, leading to therapeutic duplications and increased hospital expenditures. The purpose of this quality improvement project was to evaluate the financial impact of pharmacist prospective review and assessment of outpatient ESAs and appropriate scheduling during a hospital stay. Methods: This was a single-centered, prospective chart review of dialysis patients with initial ESA orders that took place in a non-profit community hospital in South Florida from January to March 2024. The pharmacist reviewed inpatient …

Koinobiont endoparasitoids regulate the physiology of their hosts through altering host immuno-metabolic responses, processes which function in tandem to shape the composition of the microbiota of these hosts. Here, we employed 16S rRNA and ITS amplicon sequencing to investigate whether parasitization by the parasitoid wasps, Diachasmimorpha longicaudata (Ashmaed) (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) and Psyttalia cosyrae (Wilkinson) (Hymenoptera: Braconidae), induces gut dysbiosis and differentially alter the gut microbial (bacteria and fungi) communities of an important horticultural pest, Bactrocera dorsalis (Hendel) (Diptera: Tephritidae). We further investigated the composition of bacterial communities of adult D. longicaudata and P. cosyrae to ascertain whether the adult parasitoids …

Occluder Device Removal And Total Septation Of "Swiss-Cheese" Ventricular Septal Defects, Andrew K Morse, Julija Dobrila, Damien J Lapar, Jorge D Salazar

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

"Swiss-cheese" ventricular septal defects present complex treatment challenges. Despite difficult defect visualization and closure, complete septation is the treatment of choice. We present the case of a 2-year-old with residual apical "Swiss-cheese" ventricular septal defects after failed percutaneous device closure with 2 occluder devices. Surgical removal of 1 device and primary closure of the defects via right apical ventriculotomy resulted in successful complete septation.

Objective: To describe parents' motivations for and against participation in neonatal research, including the views of those who declined participation.

Study design: We performed 44 semi-structured, qualitative interviews of parents approached for neonatal research. Here we describe their motivations for and against participation.

Results: Altruism was an important reason parents chose to participate. Some hoped participation in research would benefit their infant. Burdens of participation to the family, such as transportation to follow up (distinct from risks/burdens to the infant), were often deciding factors among those who declined participation. Perceived risks to the infant were reasons against participation, but parents …

Isolation And Upgrading Of Lignin From Agricultural Sources Using Phase Equilibria, Bronson Lynn Dec 2024

Isolation And Upgrading Of Lignin From Agricultural Sources Using Phase Equilibria, Bronson Lynn

All Dissertations

In the emerging bioeconomy, agricultural residues from our nationwide crop harvests are positioned to be a cornerstone of renewable and sustainable fuels, chemicals, and materials. However, to be economically viable, the basic constituents of this plant matter must be separated and funneled to the appropriate application to maximize value and overall usability.

This work focuses on the component that has, to this point, been largely left behind: lignin. Although it is the most abundant aromatic biopolymer on the planet, making up 15-40% of grasses, hardwoods, and softwoods, the processing involved to isolate usable lignins is too complex and expensive to …

The climate crisis is upon us, whether we like it or not, and its undeniable effects are evident. Take, for example, Hurricane Helene, which caused unimaginable devastation to what was once considered a “climate haven,” Asheville, NC (Andreoni, 2024; Medina & Fausset, 2024). Hurricane Helene made landfall as a Category 4, jumping from a Category 1 in less than 24 hours (Andreoni, 2024), and is noted by the National Hurricane Center as a major hurricane (National Hurricane Center & Central Pacific Hurricane Center, 2024). With the Earth now unlikely to remain below 1.5°C of warming (IPCC, 2023b), perhaps we can …
