Rice Sucrose Non-Fermenting Related Protein Kinase (Snrk1) Has A Limited Role In Defense Against Fall Armyworm (Spodoptera Frugiperda), Devi Balakrishnan, Vibha Srivastava, Rupesh Kariyat
Entomology and Plant Pathology Faculty Publications and Presentations
Sucrose non-fermenting (SNF) related protein kinase 1 (SnRK1) is a master regulator of energy deprivation signaling, has also been implicated in abiotic and biotic stress regulation. SnRK1 promotes stress tolerance through metabolic and transcriptional changes and plays important roles in innate immunity against various pathogens. However, whether it plays a role against insect herbivory is not understood. To test this, using the wild type (with SnRK1) and snrk1 mutant lines in rice, we examined the potential role of SnRK1 in rice against the ruinous pest, Fall armyworm (FAW), Spodoptera frugiperda. We also investigated the response of FAW towards these …

Many studies have examined attention biases as a risk factor of social anxiety disorder (SAD). Fewer studies have examined biases in memory, and the results are discrepant. Because memory depends on attention, it is possible that memory biases depend on whether stimuli are attended, such as when they are task-relevant. The aim of the present study was to investigate how social anxiety is associated with biased recognition memory of threatening social stimuli. Participants (N = 159) completed a task in which a semi-transparent face and house spatially overlapped. Participants were cued to identify the gender of the face or …

Thermal Modeling Of Cooling Time Of Submarine Dacite Lapilli Tuff: Brothers Volcano, Kermadec Arc, Kyler Byrd
Master's Theses
Little is known about submarine volcanoes' eruptive histories and styles, even though they are essential to developing island arc systems and represent the second largest volcanic systems on Earth. Scientific drilling allows for the opportunity to study these systems. This study focused on two drill sites on Brothers volcano from IODP Expedition 376: Site U1528, located on the resurgent cone, and Site U1530, located on the caldera rim. Expedition researchers analyzed samples for clast radius, density, thermal conductivity, and specific heat. This data was then entered into the heat transfer equation of a sphere to create a cooling curve model …
Fight At The Museum: An Ethnographic Study Investigating Staff And Volunteers At Wwii Museums And Memorials, Miranda Noland
Fight At The Museum: An Ethnographic Study Investigating Staff And Volunteers At Wwii Museums And Memorials, Miranda Noland
Master's Theses
Museums are places where events of the past can be explained, appreciated, and understood. While efforts are often taken to provide a neutral position in the presentation of complicated and emotional historical events, there may exist external pressure to present a more overtly nationalist narrative to please a particular audience or group of funders (Fujitani 1997). This creates a conflict of interest with respect to fair, accurate, and/or honest representation (White 1997b) for museum staff to navigate.
The goal of this thesis is to investigate stories that museums are permitted to tell within the context of Japanese and American narratives …

Making Social Interactions Accessible For The Blind And Low-Vision People By Detecting Emotions Through Vocal Tone, Facial Expressions, And Body Language, Gautham Krishna
Theses
Despite the thriving research in the field of accessibility, there are several niche area where there is a need for specific solutions. One such area is social interaction. Blind and Low-Vision people (BLV) are limited in identifying emotions through verbal communication alone, which is often biased and unreliable in certain environments. Prior research illustrates the importance of body language in expressions and articulates the mechanism behind human emotions. Drawing inspiratoin from such research and various studies that were focused on emotion recognition systems, our research focused on identifying a portable accessible solution for BLV that classified emotion based on multi-modal …

Conservative Management Of A Rare Clinical Phenomenon: Paraspinal Compartment Syndrome - A Review Of Existing Literature., Mark Lagreca, Arash Badragheh, Nathan Jones, Thomas Falconiero, Brian Danshaw
Orthopedic Surgery Resident Research
INTRODUCTION: This review of case series and case reports explores conservative management strategies for paraspinal compartment syndrome (PCS), a rare clinical condition. Extremity compartment syndrome has been shown to be managed most effectively with emergent surgical release of the fascial compartment. Given the rarity of PCS and the paucity of research in the literature, some authors have suggested the possibility of conservative treatment. There has been no study to date that has specifically investigated the cases of non-operative management of PCS.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: There are 16 case reports in the literature with 22 cases of PCS treated conservatively. The …

Marianismo:Challenging Traditional Mexican-American Roles For Women, Clarissa Aileen Montalvo
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
While plentiful research has examined Machismo as a gender role norm for Mexican men, little has examined the role of women’s traditional Marianismo roles. Research identifies 5 “pillars” of Marianismo: family, virtuosity, subordination, self-silencing, and spirituality. I was interested in whether adhering to some traditional pillars of Marianismo (e.g., family) allow women to break away from other, more oppressive pillars (e.g., subordination, self-silencing). I tested whether traditional Marianismo beliefs impact women’s general mental health, and whether differences in traditional beliefs influence the degree to which women can be challenged to push back against more negative pillars by focusing on the …

Using Ai Tools To Unmask Sarcasm, Sidra Tehniyath Lnu
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
Sarcasm can be identified in newspaper headlines in digital communication, as it is contextual and has low inter- and intra-observer reliability. This research aims to improve sarcastic comment identification using a natural language processing approach, especially the BI-LSTM. The primary concern is to use fine-tuning methods to enhance the ways that strengthen the sarcasm identification rate, which regards the factors that complicate an automatic identification process. The study explores the impact of techniques such as early stopping, optimal loss function selection, and hyperparameter tuning to enhance the model's performance. The research questions are: Q1) How can fine-tuning techniques for BI-LSTM …

Geoflood: Computational Model For Overland Flooding, Brian Kyanjo
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
Overland flooding, a critical environmental phenomenon, poses significant challenges for computational modeling due to its complex hydrodynamics and the need for high-resolution data. This thesis presents GeoFlood, a new open-source software package for overland flooding simulations. The computational model solves shallow water equations (SWE) on a quadtree hierarchy of mapped, logically Cartesian grids managed by the parallel, adaptive library ForestClaw (Calhoun & Burstedde, 2017). The model is validated using standard benchmark tests from Neelz & Pender (2013) and against results from the GeoClaw software (George, 2011; Clawpack Development Team, 2020) for the historical Malpasset dam break problem. The benchmark test …
