Muramyl Peptide Blend Ameliorates Intestinal Inflammation And Barrier Integrity In Caco-2 Cells, Dmytro M. Masiuk, Victor S. Nedzvetsky, Giyasettin Baydas

Karbala International Journal of Modern Science

Intestinal barrier function depends on epithelial adhesion, which restricts permeability and microbial invasion from the internal environment. Impairment of barrier integrity and gut function is closely linked to pro-inflammatory changes. Inflammation is often the primary factor that provokes gut function disorders. The anti-inflammatory potential of postbiotics has been reported in recent years. Muramyl peptides (MPs) are small signaling molecules that stimulate intracellular pathogen receptors and can regulate cell responses. However, the molecular mechanisms of MPs' effects on intestinal cells remain unknown. The study of MPs treatment on lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-challenged Caco-2 intestinal cells aimed to investigate the postbiotic effects on intestinal …

The Globular Cluster System Of The Virgo Cluster Ultradiffuse Galaxy Vcc 615, J. C. Mihos, Patrick R. Durrell, Elisa Toloba, Eric W. Peng, Sungsoon Lim, Patrick Côté, Puragra Guhathakurta, Laura Ferrarese Dec 2024

The Globular Cluster System Of The Virgo Cluster Ultradiffuse Galaxy Vcc 615, J. C. Mihos, Patrick R. Durrell, Elisa Toloba, Eric W. Peng, Sungsoon Lim, Patrick Côté, Puragra Guhathakurta, Laura Ferrarese

Pacific Faculty Work

We use Hubble Space Telescope imaging to study the globular cluster system of the Virgo Cluster ultradiffuse galaxy (UDG) VCC 615. We select globular cluster candidates through a combination of size and color, while simultaneously rejecting contamination from background galaxies that would be unresolved in ground-based imaging. Our sample of globular cluster candidates is essentially complete down to a limiting magnitude of F814W = 24.0, ≈90% down the globular cluster luminosity function (GCLF). We estimate a total globular cluster population for VCC 615 of N GC = 25 . 1 − 5.4 + 6.5 , resulting in a specific frequency …

Modeling Heat Flux Effects On Spacecraft At Atmospheric Re-Entry, Khalid Ayoola, Carson Running Dec 2024

Modeling Heat Flux Effects On Spacecraft At Atmospheric Re-Entry, Khalid Ayoola, Carson Running

Mechanical Engineering Student Publications

Spacecraft re-entry involves complex thermal and fluid dynamic interactions that critically impact vehicle design and survival. This research investigates heat flux dynamics during atmospheric transition, utilizing the Fay-Riddell equation to model heat transfer through spacecraft surfaces under varying conditions of altitude, Mach number, and nose radius. Key findings reveal that heat flux decreases exponentially with altitude, increases with velocity, and varies significantly with geometric configuration. The analysis demonstrates heat flux ranges from 3.21 × 10^4 W/m^2 with a 3m nose radius at Mach 10 and 30km altitude to 8.32 × 10^6 W/m^2 with a 0.1m nose radius at ground level, …

A River Of Resilience: Navigating Water Governance In The Colorado River Basin Dec 2024

A River Of Resilience: Navigating Water Governance In The Colorado River Basin

Student Theses 2015-Present

This paper explores how climate change, the Southwestern North American megadrought, rapid population growth, the overallocation of water entitlements, and excessive consumption impact the Colorado River Basin’s water supply. The Colorado River basin will not be able to sustain its water supply for the forty million people depending on it across the seven basin states– Arizona, Colorado, California, Utah, New Mexico, Nevada, and Wyoming– in addition to the two Mexican states, Sonora and Baja California unless consumption is reduced to regulate the basin’s decreasing supply. Despite its critical role in supplying water to millions of people and the challenges posed …

Poetic Qualities In Ancient India And Their Legacy In Rabindranath Tagore’S Aesthetic Theory, Nipat Yamdate Dec 2024

Poetic Qualities In Ancient India And Their Legacy In Rabindranath Tagore’S Aesthetic Theory, Nipat Yamdate

Journal of Letters

Poets in ancient India have been recognized as sages, instructors, and individuals who uplift humanity’s spiritual cultivation through their literary creations, which are enlightening, beautiful, and full of profound philosophical and religious insights. Kāvyaśāstra, which refers to ancient Indian treatises on poetic theories, holds that the qualities of a true poet are creative power (pratibhā) and the skill or talent (śakti) to transform ordinary language into beautiful poetry. However, even though poets are able to create works that are valuable and timeless, judgment of poetic qualities also depends on reader or audience, who must use empathy in order to comprehend …

The Erotic Sentiment In Nāṭyaśāstra, Pitchayawut Kumpiro Dec 2024

The Erotic Sentiment In Nāṭyaśāstra, Pitchayawut Kumpiro

Journal of Letters

Śṛṅgārarasa, the erotic sentiment, is the first and most significant of the eight sentiments in the sentiment theory in the Nāṭyaśāstra, the foremost treatise on Sanskrit drama, which also strongly influences the treatise on Sanskrit poetic writing, or the Alaṅkāraśāstra. As dramas ultimately aim to entertain readers and audiences, and the art of writing is one of the essential elements of creating dramas, a poet who thoroughly understands the theory of the bhāva (emotion) and rasa (sentiment) will firmly succeed
in creating dramas.

This article provides an in-depth explanation of the theory of the bhāva and …

Literature In The Evolutionary Framework: Darwin's Theory Of Evolution In English Literary Analysis, Rawitawan Sophonpanich Dec 2024

Literature In The Evolutionary Framework: Darwin's Theory Of Evolution In English Literary Analysis, Rawitawan Sophonpanich

Journal of Letters

This article aims to examine the role of Charles Darwin's theory of evolution in literature, considering its influence on Victorian writers—particularly in the realist novels of Charles Dickens and George Eliot—and extending to the emergence of evolutionary literary theory in the 20th century. The author applies this theory to analyze John Milton's Sonnet 7. The analysis results demonstrate that Darwinian evolutionary literary theory has strengths in explaining character behavior through the lens of adaptation for survival but is limited by its neglect of historical and cultural contexts. The experimental reading of Milton's Sonnet 7 clearly reflects this limitation, as the …

New York Times V. Sullivan: A Civil Rights Story, Samantha Barbas Dec 2024

New York Times V. Sullivan: A Civil Rights Story, Samantha Barbas

Texas A&M Law Review

The 1964 Supreme Court decision in New York Times v. Sullivan established the “actual malice” rule in libel law, requiring that in order to win a libel suit, a public official must show that a defamatory statement was false and that the speaker made the statement knowing that it was false or “with reckless disregard of whether it was false or not.”

Sullivan involved a libel suit brought by segregationist Alabama officials against the New York Times (“Times”) and leaders of the civil rights movement. Sullivan arose from sectional battles over civil rights and integration in the 1960s. An all-white …

Murder On The Hearsay Trail, Jeffrey Bellin Dec 2024

Murder On The Hearsay Trail, Jeffrey Bellin

Texas A&M Law Review

Judges, lawyers, and law students struggle to apply American evidence law’s most distinctive feature—the hearsay prohibition. The problem is that hearsay is difficult to master and somewhat dull. At the same time, hearsay evidence is ubiquitous and important. Every litigator has a story about a judge’s eccentric hearsay rulings; mine is the trial judge who waved his hand dismissively at hearsay objections, letting witnesses answer on the grounds that “I want to hear it.” And the case law is littered with appellate opinions scolding trial judges for erroneous hearsay rulings while introducing errors of their own.

That is just the …

Capital Trifurcation, William W. Berry Iii Dec 2024

Capital Trifurcation, William W. Berry Iii

Texas A&M Law Review

The death penalty is disappearing in the United States. Annual executions remain under 25 per year, and new capital sentences per year have not exceeded 75 in over a decade.

Over the past two decades, however, a new kind of death sentence has emerged—life without parole (“LWOP”). In practice, LWOP and death sentences are functionally equivalent, as most death row inmates die of natural causes in prison, not execution. For both economic and moral reasons, most states are not actively executing prisoners.

Therefore, capital sentencing proceedings that focus on life versus death neglect the more consequential question—life without parole versus …

Massey V. Texas: Eroding The Exclusionary Rule And Incentivizing Police Misconduct, Geoffrey S. Corn, Brandon E. Beck

Texas A&M Law Review

In April 2023, the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals upheld the conviction of James Calvin Massey for possession of drugs discovered as a direct result of an unconstitutional Terry frisk. Ordinarily, with limited exceptions, the exclusionary rule prohibits the prosecution from using contraband discovered as a result of unconstitutional police action, akin to the situation Mr. Massey encountered. In fact, that’s exactly why the intermediate court of appeals reversed Mr. Massey’s conviction. When the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals reinstated Massey’s conviction, it broke new ground, holding that because Mr. Massey resisted the unconstitutional Terry frisk, his uncharged misdemeanor offense …

Exit Through The White House: Congressional Constraints On Unilateral Presidential Withdrawal From Treaties, Taylor R. Dalton Dec 2024

Exit Through The White House: Congressional Constraints On Unilateral Presidential Withdrawal From Treaties, Taylor R. Dalton

Texas A&M Law Review

When does the U.S. President have the constitutional authority to withdraw from a treaty unilaterally? Where the U.S. Constitution details the making but not the exiting of treaties, the U.S. Supreme Court has largely left the issue open for the political branches to resolve. Many scholars argue that modern practice supports a conclusion that the President has the practical—if not legal—power to withdraw unilaterally from an Article II treaty or congressional-executive agreement without the consent of Congress. This argument is largely premised on the claim that Congress has acquiesced to executive practice, providing a gloss on expansive executive power to …

Administrative Law's Unavailing Duties, Daniel Z. Epstein Dec 2024

Administrative Law's Unavailing Duties, Daniel Z. Epstein

Texas A&M Law Review

Through a novel empirical approach, this Article shows that legal doctrine does not determine whether federal courts provide remedies when agencies fail to enforce a statutory duty. Plaintiffs are most likely to succeed against the government when litigating statutory procedures located within agency-specific statutes and which raise major policy questions in immigration, healthcare, Native American rights, public housing, the environment, or labor. Others are more likely to lose against the government: plaintiffs litigating statutory violations involving procedures not specific to an agency, but which apply to officers and agencies throughout the bureaucracy. These cases involve duties governing ethics, transparency, recordkeeping, …

Doe V. Geller And Personal Jurisdiction Over Internet Activities, Elizabeth Kruse Dec 2024

Doe V. Geller And Personal Jurisdiction Over Internet Activities, Elizabeth Kruse

Texas A&M Law Review

Personal jurisdiction is fundamental in American jurisprudence since it gives a court the power to bind parties with its ruling. Despite this subject’s mundane veneer, the concept is so complicated that it has inspired thousands of academic articles. A brief search on Westlaw under Law Reviews & Journals for the term “personal jurisdiction” yields nearly 10,000 results, while Lexis+ yields 14,662 for the same term. Even so, as the nature of human interaction has changed from in person, to in writing, to over the phone, and, most recently, to over the internet, the doctrine of personal jurisdiction has accommodated. Recent …

Counselor Education Faculty Publications and Presentations

Background and Objectives:

For persons with rheumatoid arthritis (RA), the accompanying systemic inflammatory conditions often insidiously damage extra-glandular organs, causing poor outcomes. Despite evidence manifesting the application of rehabilitation services (RSs), the association between RSs use and changes in the inflammatory response among persons with RA has not yet been established. With that in mind, this study aimed to evaluate changes in C-reactive protein (CRP) and erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) before and after long-term RSs use.

Materials and Methods:

For this two-group pre and posttest study, medical data of 4505 persons with RA aged 20–70 years between 2012 and 2017 …

Factors Affecting Waiting Times To Enter Opioid Use Disorder Treatment In The United States With A Particular Focus On Potential Biological Sex Disparity, Stanley Nkemjika, Kenneth Oforeh, Connie Olwit, Olaniyi Olayinka, Terence Tumenta Dec 2024

Effects Of Pollution On The Flow Of The Gowanus Canal, Eleanore Dzija, Carson Running Dec 2024

Effects Of Pollution On The Flow Of The Gowanus Canal, Eleanore Dzija, Carson Running

Mechanical Engineering Student Publications

This paper explores how pollution affects the flow of the Gowanus Canal. Four scenarios are modeled to represent different phases of pollution remediation: no remediation, dredging and capping of the canal bottom, combined sewer overflow capture, and dredging and capping with combined sewer overflow capture. Dredging and capping of the canal bottom resulted in the greatest increase in velocity. Dredging and capping with combined sewer overflow capture resulted in the greatest decrease in pressure. This indicates that dredging and capping of the canal bottom may be the most efficient pollution remediation strategy and should be the focus of the cleanup …

The Effect Of Temperature On Power Output From A Hydroelectric Penstock, Taylor Hartell, Carson Running Dec 2024

The Effect Of Temperature On Power Output From A Hydroelectric Penstock, Taylor Hartell, Carson Running

Mechanical Engineering Student Publications

Hydroelectric power is a form of renewable energy that uses the power from water to generate electricity. One of the ways this is done is by diverting water from a river with a penstock leading to a turbine. Hydroelectric systems rely on water as the source of power, and the viscosity of water varies with temperature. When temperatures are low, viscosity is high, and when temperatures are high, viscosity is low. Other works have studied the optimal dimensions of penstocks for power generation and the effect of hydroelectric power on river temperatures. In this research, the effect of temperature on …

Comparative Study Of Aerodynamic Characteristics Of Standard And Dimpled Naca 0012 Airfoil, Fahim Shahriyar, Carson Running

Mechanical Engineering Student Publications

This study analyzes the aerodynamic performance of a NACA 0012 airfoil with dimples on its upper surface, comparing it to the standard configuration. Using the Navier-Stokes equations, Blasius solutions, the k-ε turbulence model, and ANSYS Fluent, steady-state incompressible flow was simulated at 25 m/s across angles of attack from -20° to +20°. Results show the standard airfoil performs well at the low Reynolds number and lower angle of attack. The inward dimple airfoil reduces drag at negative angles, while the outward dimple airfoil enhances lift at higher positive angles. Shear stress analysis reveals laminar flow on flat plates and turbulent …
