Optimizing Vgg16 Deep Learning Model With Enhanced Hunger Games Search For Logo Classification, Mohammed Hussain, Thaer Thaher, Mohamed Basel Almourad, Majdi Mafarja

All Works

Accurate classification of logos is a challenging task in image recognition due to variations in logo size, orientation, and background complexity. Deep learning models, such as VGG16, have demonstrated promising results in handling such tasks. However, their performance is highly dependent on optimal hyperparameter settings, whose fine-tuning is both labor-intensive and time-consuming. Swarm intelligence algorithms have been widely adopted to solve many highly nonlinear, multimodal problems and have succeeded significantly. The Hunger Games Search (HGS) is a recent swarm intelligence algorithm that has shown good performance across various applications. However, the standard HGS still faces limitations, such as restricted population …

Monetary Policy Uncertainty And Agricultural Climate Risk: Does The Agricultural Kuznets Curve Exist?, Chien-Chiang Lee, Farzan Yahya, Md Reza Sultanuzzaman

Bulletin of Monetary Economics and Banking

This study explores the impact of Monetary Policy Uncertainty (MPU) on Agricultural Climate Risk (AGCR) in China, particularly in light of recent climate vulnerabilities in the agricultural sector, highlighted by recent floods. Using balanced panel data from 31 provinces between 2010 and 2022, diagnostic tests confirm cross-sectional dependence and slope heterogeneity, and the Westerlund cointegration test indicates a long-term relationship among variables. Results from generalized panel quantile regression show that MPU positively affects AGCR, especially at lower quantiles, but this effect can be moderated by agricultural insurance. The findings also confirm an agricultural Kuznets curve, where agricultural productivity initially increases …

The lifetime of electronic devices strongly depends on the junction temperature. Heat sinks are a good choice for dissipating heat because of their enhanced heat transfer areas. Plate–fin heat sinks are commonly used for electronic components because of their simple construction. Recently, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software, such as Ansys Fluent and OpenFOAM, has been widely used and has provided effective results. Autodesk CFD is a powerful simulation tool; however, its use in heat sink research remains relatively uncommon. In this study, two plate–fin heat sinks with heights of 30 and 50 mm were first designed using heat transfer equations …

Walled Gardens & Forbidden Apples: Software Access Amid Antimonopoly Resurgence, Jake A. Evinger Dec 2024

Walled Gardens & Forbidden Apples: Software Access Amid Antimonopoly Resurgence, Jake A. Evinger

Richmond Journal of Law & Technology

As consumer technology markets mature, one must question why the ways we use our devices are so restrictive. Some landmark legal cases, such as Epic Games, Inc. v. Apple, Inc., have sought to address that question. Additionally, regulators have recognized the need for better software distribution. The European Union recently forced Apple to open its iPhone to third-party application stores via the Digital Markets Act. The Department of Justice attacked the closed nature of the iPhone. This shift in sentiments, however, is not restricted to smartphones and will become more critical as emerging technologies vie for consumer attention. Almost every …

Impact Of Covid-19 On International Trade, Paresh Kumar Narayan, Chun Ping Chang, Xin-Xin Zhao

Bulletin of Monetary Economics and Banking

Using a global monthly unbalanced panel dataset of 70 countries from January 2020 to May 2023, we first examine the impact of COVID-19 on global trade. The empirical results show a detrimental impact of COVID-19 on countries’ foreign trade, which persists over six months. We evaluate the robustness of our findings by employing an alternative dependent variable and different estimators. Our main findings hold and two features of our results standout: first, that COVID-19 hurt international trade more for non-Asian countries; and second, that sectoral sensitivity to COVID-19 was heterogenous. These results have important policy implications.

Cheaper Is Better? Evidence From China Fund Expense And Performance, Yezhou Sha, Jianwu Yi Dec 2024

Cheaper Is Better? Evidence From China Fund Expense And Performance, Yezhou Sha, Jianwu Yi

Bulletin of Monetary Economics and Banking

The expense of mutual fund sustained a substantial growth in recent years, but do the expense of fund genuinely contribute to the fund performance? We examine the relation between the expense of Chinese actively managed equity funds and their performance. We show that the expense has a negative effect on the excess return of funds, which is consistent with the well-established negative relation from previous research of the mutual fund in U.S. In subsequent heterogeneity analysis, we also find that the fund’s return volatility strengthens the negative effects, whereas its age and size did not. After further analysis and additional …

Combining Direct Black Hole Mass Measurements And Spatially Resolved Stellar Kinematics To Calibrate The Mbh–Σ⋆ Relation Of Active Galaxies, Nico Winkel, Vardha N. Bennert, Raymond P. Remigio, Tommaso Treu, Knud Jahnke, Vivian U, Aaron J. Barth, Matthew Malkan, Bernd Husemann, Xuheng Ding

Physics

The origin of the tight scaling relation between the mass of supermassive black holes (SMBHs; MBH) and their host-galaxy properties remains unclear. Active galactic nuclei (AGNs) probe phases of ongoing SMBH growth and offer the only opportunity to measure MBH beyond the local Universe. However, determining an AGN's host galaxy's stellar velocity dispersion, σ⋆, and its galaxy dynamical mass, Mdyn, is complicated by AGN contamination, aperture effects, and different host-galaxy morphologies. We select a sample of AGNs for which MBH has been independently determined to high accuracy by state-of-the-art techniques: dynamical modeling of the reverberation …

Artificial Intolerance: The Disparate Impact Of Ai In Housing, Kaitlin Carroll Dec 2024

Artificial Intolerance: The Disparate Impact Of Ai In Housing, Kaitlin Carroll

Richmond Journal of Law & Technology

From the intentional displacement of Native Americans to the racially motivated redlining of cities across the country, housing discrimination has always been an issue in the United States. Congress enacted the 1968 Fair Housing Act (“FHA”) to eradicate the rampant discriminatory practices present in housing decision-making. Since its enactment, courts have interpreted §§ 3604 and 3605 to not only hold housing providers directly responsible for their own policies, but have also applied this interpretation to a wide range of entities that provide housing- related services. Additionally, because not all biases are intentional, or even recognizable at a cursory glance, the …

From Hell To Heaven: How Climate Risks Hurt The Poor And Climate Finance Heals Them, Dr. Kangyin Dong, Congyu Zhao, Xiucheng Dong

Bulletin of Monetary Economics and Banking

This study explores the global impact of climate finance on wealth and income inequality, utilizing the IV-GMM model to capture nuanced relationships. Key findings indicate that climate finance effectively reduces both forms of inequality, benefiting low-income populations and suggesting it as a viable tool for inequality reduction. Notably, the impact of climate finance is asymmetric: countries with lower initial inequality levels experience more pronounced benefits, while the effect lessens as inequality increases. Additionally, climate risks—represented by natural disasters— worsen inequality, underscoring climate finance’s dual role in directly reducing inequality and indirectly mitigating disaster impacts. These insights offer valuable policy implications, …
