Social connection is a fundamental human need and a critical driver of individual health and well-being. When older adults maintain stable, supportive relationships, they experience significantly better physical, mental, and cognitive health outcomes. In response to growing evidence of its public health impact, the World Health Organization (WHO) designated social connection as a global public health priority, and the U.S. Surgeon General issued an Advisory calling for action to address the loneliness epidemic.

Daily rainfall is hard to forecast where most days are dry, a few days are very wet, and almost all of the rain arrives in one season. This dissertation studies day-ahead rainfall forecasting over West Bengal, India, using models that learn from both the temporal and the spatial layout of measuring stations. We first build up a forecasting model in stages, from simple models that look at one station’s past to a graph-based model that links nearby stations, and we identify the strongest deterministic forecaster among them. Cognitive impairment (CI) is prevalent among heart failure (HF) patients. Although the brain injury in HF is multifactorial, oxidative stress and neuroinflammation are common pathological features of neurological disorders and are increasingly recognized as key mechanisms underlying CI. Extracellular vesicles (EVs) are well-established mediators of biological signaling in myocardial function and are widely recognized for transporting a variety of microRNAs. Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) is highly associated with the development of cardiovascular disease (CVD); however, the mechanisms responsible are currently unknown. We have developed a model of MASLD due to the loss of hepatocyte peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor α (PPARα^HEPKO). We found that plasma beta-hydroxybutyrate (BHOB) levels were significantly reduced in PPARα^HEPKO mice and aimed to investigate the therapeutic potential of restoring BHOB levels in the development of CVD in these mice. Microcystin-LR (MC-LR) is a potent hepatotoxin that has been shown to cause liver damage even at doses lower than the established Low Observable Adverse Effect Level (LOAEL) of 200 μg/kg in animal models. We have previously observed that low-dose exposure to MC-LR in animals with diet-induced Metabolic Dysfunction-Associated Steatotic Liver Disease (MASLD) and subsequent treatment with antioxidants like N-acetylcysteine (NAC) and the Na⁺/K⁺ ATPase-Src kinase inhibitor pNaKtide significantly alleviated hepatic infiltration of immune cells, downregulated markers of inflammation and hepatotoxicity, increased the breakdown of the toxin molecule, and restored phase I and II drug metabolism pathways, including …

Background/Objectives: Due to the utility of knowing the pathway involvement of metabolites detected in biological experiments, knowledgebases such as the Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG), Reactome, and MetaCyc have annotated compound entries to specific pathways defined by the knowledgebase. However, these compound-pathway annotations are largely incomplete and are costly to obtain experimentally or curate from published scientific literature. This metabolite-pathway annotation incompleteness problem is amenable to machine learning (ML)-based solutions. Background/Objectives: Signaling mediators of PPARγ influence pathways involved in adipogenesis, lipid storage, inflammation, energy-related processes, and glucose utilization. Recent research indicates that PPARγ coregulators, recruited or released during ligand binding, govern specific gene pathways. It was recently discovered that Gα_q, a heterotrimeric G protein subunit, also signals to PPARγ and may significantly affect adipogenesis and glucose sensitivity. The Dot/Icm type IV secretion system (T4SS) is essential for Legionella pneumophila infection, but its in situ architecture and mechanism remain incompletely understood. Using cryo-electron tomography, we performed subtomogram averaging and 3D classification to resolve structural heterogeneity within the complex. We identified multiple assembly states of the inner membrane complex, including a fully assembled form with a hexamer-of-dimers DotO ATPase and symmetry mismatches between subcomplexes. A composite in situ model revealed a central channel above the inner membrane, likely used for substrate secretion. Imaging of infected macrophages showed T4SSs tethered to host vacuoles and extracellular vesicle release, suggesting additional effector …

Purpose: Despite growing recognition of stress-related health inequities, the role of nativity and acculturation in shaping the relationship between chronic stress and cancer outcomes among Hispanic populations remains poorly understood. The purpose of this study was to examine whether nativity factors (United States (US) citizenship status and length of time residing in the US modify the association between allostatic load (AL), a measure of chronic physiologic stress, and cancer mortality among Hispanic adults. The atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945 created a unique environment of acute, high-dose ionizing radiation, contrasting sharply with the chronic low-dose rate exposure in the Chernobyl and Fukushima Exclusion Zones. This stands in stark contrast to the chronic, low-dose rate contamination that defines the Chernobyl and Fukushima Exclusion Zones. While the long-term ecological effects of the latter are well-documented, a systematic synthesis of the floral response to the atomic bombings is lacking. How Much And How Fast Do Investors Respond To Equity Premium Changes? Evidence From Wealth Taxation, Andreas Fagereng, Luigi Guiso, Marius Ring

Using administrative panel data on Norwegian investors’ portfolios, we document strong but slow portfolio allocation responses to a persistent wealth-tax-induced shock to the equity premium. Short-run responses resemble the modest sensitivity documented using surveys. The longer-run responses are much larger and can be rationalized by moderate risk aversion. We document that equity premium shocks affect stock market entry but not exits, suggesting that entry costs dominate participation costs. Our finding of slow responses supports the asset-pricing literature that uses adjustment frictions to explain important asset-pricing puzzles, and has implications for optimal capital taxation when tax rates differ across assets.

Enhancing Postsecondary Outcomes For Students With Emotional And Behavioral Disorders: A Design-Based Mixed Methods Approach To Transition Planning, Kate M. Schrum

Students with emotional and behavioral disorders (EBD) experienced significantly lower postsecondary outcomes when compared to same-aged peers. These outcomes included lower graduation rates, higher unemployment rates, and difficulty establishing independent living arrangements (Wagner & Newman, 2015). Following a human-centered, design-based approach, the scholar-practitioner found a lack of consistent and meaningful transition support specifically designed for students with EBD. Working with a stakeholder team of educational professionals directly involved in supporting transition for students with EBD at an alternative special education program, the scholar-practitioner developed a "Transition Toolkit". The toolkit contained scaffolded grade-level checklists (for grades 6–12) with self-advocacy and goal-setting …

Beyond The Generations: Building A High-Quality Workplace For An Age-Diverse Workforce, Cal J. Halvorsen, Bruna C. Lopez, Erika Sabbath

At a time when the U.S. is more age diverse than ever before, Americans are extending their careers for financial stability, social connection, and purpose. This article provides a brief background on the history of aging and work, from the late 1800s to present, illustrating the influence that public and organizational policies, as well as personal needs and interests, have on labor force participation. It then provides examples for how employers can create better workplaces for people of all ages, concluding with the case for why more age-inclusive workplaces lead to better results for employees, their families, and their employers.

BACKGROUND: Flow diversion is effective for unruptured distal anterior cerebral artery (DACA) aneurysms, yet comparative data between the Silk Vista Baby (SVB) and Pipeline Embolization Device (PED) in this challenging territory remain scarce.

METHODS: We conducted a retrospective multicenter study using the CRETA Registry, including consecutive patients with unruptured DACA aneurysms treated with SVB or PED. The primary endpoint was complete angiographic occlusion (O'Kelly-Marotta grade D). Secondary outcomes included procedural characteristics, clinical outcome (modified Rankin Scale), and complications. Overlap weighting was applied to account for non-randomized treatment allocation. Planting, fertilization, irrigation, and chemigation are key categories in farm decision-making, and currently there is no one-shot decision-support tool that covers all these activities. Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) models are more advanced than traditional machine learning and deep learning models. Background: A minority of blood donors are Rh(D)-negative, and Rh(D)-negative red blood cell (RBC) products are often overutilized. As such, Rh(D)-negative RBCs may be difficult to maintain in blood bank inventory.

Study design and methods: We changed our blood bank laboratory policy to approve non-alloimmunized Rh(D)-negative patients to receive Rh(D)-positive RBCs for routine transfusion under defined criteria. Those criteria included Rh(D)-negative males (all ages) and females (aged >50 years) who were designated as do not resuscitate (DNR), either with or without intubation, in the electronic medical record.

Importance  Community health workers (CHWs) improve chronic disease management in underserved populations, but scalable integration strategies are limited.

Objective  To evaluate whether a multidimensional intervention incorporating telementored CHWs and a structured participant-CHW-clinician feedback loop can improve diabetes outcomes.

Design, Setting, and Participants  This 12-month randomized clinical trial was conducted at 3 institutionally and geographically diverse community clinics in Texas between September 1, 2023, and April 30, 2025, and included low-income, uninsured White Hispanic adults with type 2 diabetes identified through clinic databases. Data were analyzed between May 1 and July 31, 2025.

Introduction While many countries achieved notable gains in contraceptive use levels after the 1994 International Conference on Population and Development which redefined family planning (FP) as a human right, there was a long period of 15 years when contraceptive use levels did not receive due attention. It was only later that its subsequent inclusion in the Sustainable Development Goals and the 2012 London Summit on FP renewed global commitment and a focus towards FP. Autistic livestreamers use platforms like Twitch for social connection, self-expression, and community, but these spaces also impose ongoing social and emotional demands. Prior work has documented these experiences, but less is known about what autistic creators themselves envision for the tools and platforms they use. We address this gap through a Research through Design (RtD) co-design study with three autistic Twitch streamers, using speculative artefacts as discussion prompts to explore how participants reasoned about potential livestreaming technologies. Continuous distance-based outlier detection in streaming data poses significant challenges and has a wide range of practical applications. Traditional threshold-based methods perform well under stable streaming conditions, where fixed parameters remain effective. However, they often struggle with dynamic data distributions and high stream speeds, leading to suboptimal performance, limited control over the number of returned outliers, and failure to meet real-time detection requirements. To address these issues, this paper introduces a novel Recall and Proportion-Aware Outlier Detection (RPA-OD) query. A common collocated group setting in mixed-reality (MR) collaboration is a person wearing a MR headset (HMD user) and presenting MR contents to audiences who are not provided with such specialized devices (Non-HMD users). In this setting, while Non-HMD users can view the MR environment shown on a large physical display, it still remains challenging for the HMD user to interpret their pointing gesture when they spatially refer to objects in the MR environment. The brain seamlessly integrates signals from multiple sensory modalities to interpret the world efficiently. By using information from various senses, the brain can enhance its ability to detect and respond to stimuli more quickly and accurately. However, combining sensory cues from multiple modalities is only sometimes beneficial as it may lead to illusions and reduced behavioural performance. Behavioural and electrophysiological experiments have revealed that detection and decision-making strategies for multisensory cues evolve throughout human development and ageing.
