Over 90% of criminal court cases are decided through plea negotiations, rather than through a jury or bench trial. Within the broader context of plea negotiations is the use of a “blind” or “open” plea, where defendants consent to the court’s decision without a chance to participate in the bargaining process. In entering blind pleas, defendants must waive constitutional trial rights with the hope that they will be given a more lenient sentence but are largely left in the dark during the process. Sight-reading is a foundational skill in music education that enables students to perform unfamiliar musical material independently. Despite its importance, instruction is often inconsistent and driven by performance priorities rather than systematic skill development. This thesis synthesizes existing research on sight-reading pedagogy to identify effective instructional strategies and organize them into a cohesive framework for educators.

By connecting research to classroom application, this project provides a practical, research-informed model for sight-reading instruction. The findings suggest that effective instruction requires a structured and integrated approach that supports both cognitive processing and musical performance, ultimately promoting greater student independence and musical literacy.

CUORE (Cryogenic Underground Observatory for Rare Events) is an experiment at the Gran Sasso National Laboratory in Assergi, Italy, currently searching for an answer to the matter-antimatter asymmetry problem; the question: why do we exist? One proposed explanation is neutrinoless double beta decay, a theorized exotic decay that would prove that neutrinos are their own antiparticle, violating the current Standard Model for particle physics. However, current detection methods do not distinguish different types of particle interactions, resulting in alpha decays contributing to the background. What would it look like to flee oppression and violence if you could not get very far away? Although enslaved people’s fugitivity in the United States is often understood through the story of complete escape, there were many more enslaved people who fled within slave states. This article defines liminal fugitivity as a type of flight in which enslaved people fled to peripheral spaces near sites of enslavement, such as crawl spaces, edges of forests, or borders of towns and plantations. Background. Safety supports psychological wellbeing and potentially shapes brain aging yet existing scales overlook cumulative lifespan safety experiences.

Methods. To address this gap, we developed and validated the Lifetime Sense of Safety (LSS) scale in Kenyan adults. The LSS uses visual analog scaling with a red-to-green color gradient to retrospectively rate felt safety across life stages and settings. We evaluated scale psychometrics and associations with social determinants of health and indicators of brain health.

Results. The LSS shows adequate internal consistency and test-retest reliability, with two distinct but correlated factors representing childhood and adulthood safety. Women and …

Underdiagnosis of cardiometabolic risk factors (CMRFs) may represent an unrecognised biological pathway contributing to dementia risk; yet remains poorly characterised in African and African diaspora populations. We quantified the prevalence and determinants of underdiagnosed hypertension and abnormal glycaemia across four cohorts comprising up to 7000 adults aged ≥40 years from Nigeria, Kenya, and The United States: Indianapolis, and North Texas. Underdiagnosis was defined as absence of self-reported diagnosis despite elevated systolic blood pressure ( ≥130 mmHg) or fasting blood glucose ( ≥100 mg/dL). Construction material markets are often reliant on imported commodities. Import tariffs and temporary trade barriers disrupt supply chains, presenting stakeholders with uncertainties regarding how such disruption impacts construction material prices. Despite the plethora of research efforts that examine the effects of economic conditions on construction material prices, the impacts of the import quantities remain understudied. This paper fills this knowledge gap using a multistep methodology. First, the prices of major construction materials and the quantities of the relevant imported commodities are retrieved. Boston's Chinatown has persisted despite highway construction, urban renewal, and institutional expansion that destroyed much of the neighborhood. This thesis asks how residents have shaped and inhabited that space and whose contributions have been forgotten in the process. Through entangling frameworks from Geography and Asian American Studies, the thesis approaches Boston's Chinatown through walking, archiving, and counter-mapping. The first chapter reads the streets as a layered record of historical ruptures, which leads to a dichotomy of presence and absence. The second chapter then examines the archives of the 1993 Parcel C struggle. It creates an original counter-archive, titled the "Collection …

Analysis Of Housing / Dormitory Capacity At Binghamton University, Binghamton University Office Of Institutional Research

Datasets

An analysis of the ratio of undergraduate housing to undergraduate enrollment was conducted to evaluate whether housing capacity at Binghamton University has kept pace with growth in undergraduate enrollment. Data from IPEDS for Binghamton University and other similar institutions shows that the University has increased housing capacity for undergraduate students in line with increases in enrollment, and that Binghamton University has the highest ratio (53%) of housing capacity to enrollment compared with other similar institutions.

Biofilm formation is a primary cause of implant-associated infections in dental and orthopedic devices. Early interactions between bacteria and host cells at the implant surface critically influence subsequent infection or successful integration. Therefore, biocompatibility screening should evaluate both biofilm formation and cell adhesion. Adhesion Index, defined as the ratio of cell adhesion to biofilm adhesion, provides a non-dimensional number to optimize towards that end. ISTHMUS is a software package designed to couple voxel-based domains with surface mesh-based solvers. Voxelized geometries provide high-fidelity representations of materials but are difficult to integrate into multiphysics workflows because of jagged boundaries and the absence of robust interface mapping. ISTHMUS addresses this challenge through two key modules: motion mapping and flux mapping. The software is written in Python with performance-critical routines accelerated on GPUs via CUDA. ISTHMUS is solver-agnostic, enabling coupling of a wide range of fluid, thermal, and structural codes without requiring modifications to their discretizations.

Sexual and gender minority (SGM) young adults are more likely to experience anxiety, depression, and stress relative to non-SGM peers. Digitally-administered mental health interventions show potential for reducing mental health distress in the general population. However, limited reporting of SGM demographics and adherence to online interventions constrain uptake and effectiveness. The present study explored the effect of an existing evidence-informed, self-guided, online-based mental health intervention, StriveWeekly, on internalizing symptoms among SGM university students. Among these, 10–15% contain mutations in the transcription factor GATA3, including the P409fs frameshift mutation that produces an extended, dysregulated protein. In online learning spaces, students may feel disconnected not only because of limited interaction but also when they notice differences in their backgrounds or beliefs. This survey study examined students’ perceived differences and their implicit and explicit experiences of othering based on their backgrounds and beliefs. Descriptive results showed that political orientation, culture, and socioeconomic status were common areas where students felt different, while race/ethnicity, culture, and religion stood out as stronger points of distinction.
