This brief focuses specifically on the proposal in Bill C-16 to create a new criminal offence of coercive control and the absence of any correlate defence for offences committed by a person who is subject to coercion. Reviewing evidence from research in other jurisdictions that have adopted such an offence (Scotland, England and Wales, and the Australian jurisidictions of NSW and Queensland), as well as Canadian research, there is abundant evidence to suggest that more criminal law, including new offences, will not necessarily increase women’s safety; and in fact, can be predicted to expose women to greater risk of harm …

Drawing on nearly a decade of qualitative data collection and educator engagement at an immigrant-serving high school in Philadelphia, this essay explores the intersections of critical multilingual pedagogy with secondary traumatic stress (STS). STS is a mental health condition impacting professionals who work closely with trauma-impacted individuals, which can adversely impact their job satisfaction and career trajectories. Weaving teacher accounts with scholarship on critical care, STS, and teachers’ working conditions, the authors paint a complex picture of how, in spite of its myriad benefits for students, critical care can increase educators’ risk of developing STS in multilingual, immigrant- serving schools, …

The rigidity of the Additively Manufactured objects can be tailored by manipulating the infill lattice type and density. In this research, an island type novel infill structure termed as Hexagonal-Zigzag pattern is introduced, and its mechanical performance is investigated. In this pattern, the zigzag raster reflects the repeating hexagonal shaped cell constituting the parallel-oriented islands and 90° rotation of the pattern in each layer distributes the island span along both transverse and longitudinal directions of the printing contour. A mathematical model is established to illustrate the effect of the infill parameters on hexagon unit cell size and relative infill density. …

FAIRLinked is a software package created to support the FAIRification of materials science data, ensuring proper alignment with FAIR principles: Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable. It is built to be compatible with MDS-Onto, an ontology designed to capture the semantics of various types of materials data, enabling integration and sharing across different research workflows. The package is subdivided into three subpackages: InterfaceMDS, RDFTableConversion, and QBWorkflow. The first subpackage, InterfaceMDS allows users to search for terms using either string search or various filters, explore different domains and subdomains, and add terms to MDS-Onto. In this chapter, we show how we used assessment and user experience (UX) methods to improve our library’s website. We conducted usability testing, during which we observed participants complete tasks on our website. To help support our testing, we used our library’s biennial user satisfaction survey, where we included several targeted questions that assessed user engagement with the website. We used the results of both assessments to inform updates to the website. Together, the results of our usability testing and survey provide a full picture of website use and lead to a more user-centered website. While the survey was quantitative …

Artificial  intelligence, data tracking, targeted advertising, and location-monitoring have intensified public  anxieties about the collection and use of personal data. These concerns echo themes explored in  classic dystopian literature, which have long warned of societies where privacy is sacrificed for  security and human identity is reduced to data. Deep learning has become the dominant approach for solving vision-centric problems; however, its successful deployment in real-world applications remains limited by high computational cost, data dependency, and insufficient integration with practical and human-centered environments. While state-of-the art deep learning models often achieve impressive performance in controlled settings, they frequently fail to generalize or operate efficiently under deployment constraints such as limited resources, complex data modalities, and real-time interaction requirements. In 1955, I. M. James introduced the James Construction, a free topological monoid that models the loops on the suspension of a given space. In 1969, S. Y. Husseini generalized this idea to RPT monoids: topological monoids with a free-like monoid structure that can be used to model a broader class of loop spaces. In order to prove that these topological monoids are models of loop spaces, both I. M. James and S. Y. Husseini constructed contractible spaces on which these topological monoids act. Monetary policy communication has become a crucial tool for central banks to shape market expectations and enhance transparency. The goal of this paper is to measure how effectively the Fed communicates monetary policy through FOMC minutes by analyzing the impact of the release of FOMC minutes on financial markets through textual sentiment analysis of daily newspaper articles. I measure the surprise in the daily news sentiment that is caused by FOMC minutes release. Objective: The purpose of this study is to examine the relationships between personal factors and High-Intensity Gait variables and balance and walking improvement in an outpatient stroke population.

Background: Stroke is a leading cause of long-term disability, with persistent gait and balance impairments commonly limiting independence and participation. High-intensity gait training (HIGT) is an evidence-based rehabilitation approach that improves walking outcomes following stroke; however, guidance on how specific training variables are applied in outpatient physical therapy settings remains broad.

Client self-disclosure is a core component of the psychotherapy process and increased levels of client self-disclosure have been shown to predict more positive therapeutic outcomes (Pattee & Farber, 2008; Sloan & Kahn, 2005). Similarly, the working alliance and attachment are constructs that have been studied in psychotherapy research and are consistently associated with therapeutic outcomes. Specifically, stronger working alliance ratings and higher levels of secure attachment have been found to predict more positive therapy outcomes (e.g., Flückiger et al., 2018; Mallinckrodt et al., 2005; Sauer et al., 2010). A burgeoning area of research within the past 30 years has sought to identify which specific therapist factors contribute to differential treatment outcomes (Barkham et al., 2017). The purpose of the current naturalistic study was to explore how two personal characteristics of therapist trainees, mentalization capacity and attachment styles, impact early treatment outcomes at two Midwestern psychology training clinics. This study also examined whether therapist mentalization and the working alliance interacted to influence client outcomes. Child sexual abuse (CSA) is an adverse childhood experience and a global health issue. Approximately one in four girls encounter CSA per year. Research evidence suggests approximately 50% of CSA survivors encounter sexual revictimization during adulthood (Walker & Wamser-Nanney, 2023), but formal help and intervention can mitigate further psychosocial harm experienced by CSA survivors (Widom et al., 2008). Independent Living and Community Participation

This summit summary examines the critical personal assistance workforce shortage in rural communities, where demand for care increasingly outpaces supply. Drawing on national data and expert panel insights, the event highlighted how structural barriers including low wages, administrative complexity, and limited data undermine the safety, independence, and dignity of disabled people in rural areas. The summit concluded that protecting rural community living requires coordinated policy investments in workforce wages, working conditions, and data systems, recognizing direct care workers as essential to the health and independence of the people and communities they serve.

Managing urinary tract infections (UTI) in people living with dementia presents a mortality paradox: clinicians must balance the risks of antibiotic overuse against the dangers of delayed treatment in high-risk phenotypes. Standard diagnostic criteria often rely on classic, localizing markers like fever and dysuria. However, these gatekeeper signs are frequently absent or blunted in dementia care due to age-associated immune dysregulation and immunosenescence. Consequently, infections often manifest as nonspecific neurobehavioral changes, leading to predictable misclassification and harmful diagnostic delays. Transportation practitioners use crash modification factors/functions (CMFs) to calculate the number of crashes expected once a countermeasure has been implemented. When evaluating design alternatives, CMFs can be used in conjunction with safety performance functions (SPFs) to derive crash predictions. The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) maintains the CMF Clearinghouse as a repository for CMFs. Contributions are submitted by researchers across the U.S., Canada, and throughout the world. Typically, individual countermeasures are associated with multiple CMFs. Some CMFs only apply to a specific facility or crash types. Stroke survivors often struggle to regain grip strength and hand mobility due to limited access to physical therapy, lack of progress tracking during independent rehabilitation sessions, and reduced motivation from slow or unmeasured progress. There is a need for more effective rehabilitation approaches, as current at-home strengthening tools do not provide quantitative feedback or adjustable resistance, and clinical devices are expensive. This makes it challenging for patients and their physical therapists to guide recovery and monitor improvement effectively.
