Check All That Apply: The Persistence And Problem Of The Black/White Racial Binary In Iowa Public Schools, Jessica Nessan Kluck

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The promotion of monoracial normativity has profoundly influenced the language used in policies, creating societal expectations that other the identification of Black/white Biracial and multiracial identities. Despite the reality of our quickly shifting demographics, multiracial identities continue to be marginalized and misconstrued through racial reporting guidelines. Racial reporting used on forms required by the Iowa Department of Education are comingled with non-racially categorized data to further distance reality in education and the public-school rankings (Iowa Department of Education, 2012; State of Iowa, 2024).

The purpose of this study was to trace the legacy of the socially constructed racial binary, preserved …

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Creating and maintaining a positive school environment is critical for fostering academic achievement, social-emotional development, and the well-being of students and staff. Research consistently demonstrates that a positive school climate enhances student engagement, reduces disciplinary issues, and improves teacher satisfaction and retention (Brookover et al., 1979; Cohen et al., 2009; Thapa et al., 2013). Effective school climates are characterized by safe, supportive, and inclusive environments that encourage collaboration and mutual respect among all members of the school community (National School Climate Center, 2020).

By providing a fair and transparent system, SBG reassures students and educators alike, instilling confidence in the system. Through in-depth, semi-structured interviews with recent graduates from a Midwest alternative school, the research examined …

The Influence Of Honor Culture Ideology On Juror Decision Making, Aubrey K. Paschal Jan 2025

The Influence Of Honor Culture Ideology On Juror Decision Making, Aubrey K. Paschal

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Culture of honor is a system of cultural beliefs in which one’s honor is seen to be of the utmost importance (Nisbett & Cohen, 1996). Due to the importance of personal honor, defending one's honor could be seen as an adequate defense for crimes committed in the name of personal honor. This study examined the influence that honor culture ideology has on juror decision making. A total of 190 participants read a brief trial summary of either a crime in which the participants’ honor was threatened, or a crime that did not involve a threat to the defendant’s honor. The …

Amplitude Mode At The Superfluid-Insulator Transition On A Random Lattice, Pulloor Kuttanikkad Vishnu, Rajesh Narayanan, Thomas Vojta

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We study the superfluid-insulator quantum phase transition of interacting bosons by means of large-scale Monte Carlo simulations in the presence of both topological and generic quenched disorders. Recent work has demonstrated that the amplitude mode at this transition broadens and localizes in the presence of dilution disorder, whereas it remains a well-defined delocalized excitation for topological (connectivity) disorder. Here, we analyze the crossover between systems with purely topological disorder and systems with additional bond randomness to disentangle the roles that disorder and interactions play for amplitude mode localization. Specifically, we analyze the scalar susceptibility and its spectral density on both …

The Organization Of Serotonergic Fibers In The Pacific Angelshark Brain: Neuroanatomical And Supercomputing Analyses, Skirmantas Janušonis, Ralf Metzler, Thomas Vojta

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Serotonergic axons (fibers) are a universal feature of all vertebrate brains. They form meshworks, typically quantified with regional density measurements, and appear to support neuroplasticity. The self-organization of this system remains poorly understood, partly because of the strong stochasticity of individual fiber trajectories. In an extension to our previous analyses of the mouse brain, serotonergic fibers were investigated in the brain of the Pacific angel shark (Squatina californica), a representative of a unique (ray-like) lineage of the squalomorph sharks. First, the fundamental cytoarchitecture of the angel shark brain was examined, including the expression of ionized calcium-binding adapter molecule 1 (Iba1, …

Despite record efficiencies, the wide adoption of silicon heterojunction is hampered by higher costs and uncertainties in long-term performance. Although recent publications report performance loss rates comparable to other field-deployed cSi technologies, the limited availability of field data and the dispersion in performance degradation results - particularly in open-circuit voltage - remain significant concerns. Various factors, including bulk and interfacial defects, charge carrier recombination dynamics, and environmental stressors such as temperature and humidity, contribute to this degradation. Understanding the mechanisms behind the open circuit voltage degradation as well as the kinetics involved is essential for developing mitigation strategies that enhance …

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Optical vortices have the tremendous potential to increase data capacity by leveraging the extra degree of freedom of orbital angular momentum. On the other hand, anisotropic 2D materials are promising building blocks for future integrated polarization-sensitive photonic and optoelectronic devices. Here, highly anisotropic third-harmonic optical vortex beam generation is demonstrated with fork holograms patterned on ultrathin 2D germanium arsenide flakes. It is shown that the anisotropic nonlinear vortex beam generation can be achieved independent of the fork grating orientation with respect to the crystallographic orientation. Furthermore, 2D fork hologram is designed to generate multiple optical vortices having different topological charges …

Electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft transforms future transportation systems by alleviating transportation congestion on the ground. This eVTOL technique possesses unique features, including reduced noise, low pollutant emissions, efficient operating costs, and flexible maneuverability. Meanwhile, battery consumption poses critical challenges to flight task duration. Thus, optimal takeoff trajectory design is essential due to immense power demands during eVTOL takeoffs. Conventional design optimization, however, iteratively evaluates high fidelity simulation models, making the design process computationally intensive. In this work, we implement a machine learning-enabled inverse mapping optimization concept, i .e., directly predicting optimal design based on design requirements (including …

Design problems in aerospace engineering often require numerous evaluations of expensive to-evaluate high-fidelity models, resulting in prohibitive computational costs. One way to address the computational cost is through building surrogates, such as deep neural networks (DNNs). However, DNNs may only be an effective surrogate when sufficient evaluations of the high-fidelity model are required such that the up-front training cost is amortized, or in situations that require real-time responses (such as interactive visualizations). Typically, the data requirements for adequately accurate training of DNNs are often impractical for engineering applications. To alleviate this issue, the proposed work utilizes output dimensionality reduction along …

This paper describes a new method of growing carbon nanotube (CNT) arrays using laser welding of a catalyst metal onto the surface of a quartz substrate, followed by CNT growth through the chemical vapor deposition (CVD) process. A major advantage of this method is its ability to pattern the catalyst before growing the CNTs, thus allowing for the formation of CNTs at specific locations. The laser pre-treatment method minimized structural damage to CNTs in comparison to the laser post-processing method, achieving a lower ID/IG value of 0.72 in Raman spectroscopy analysis. Using hexagonally patterned CNT arrays on quartz, we achieve …

Advancing Cislunar Space Domain Awareness Through Robust Optimization Framework For Optical Sensors-Based Autonomous Satellite Systems, Smriti Nandan Paul, Siwei Fan, Igor Panfil

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The number of cislunar resident space objects is expected to proliferate rapidly because of strategic interests targeting long-term presence on the Moon and exploration of other planets (e.g., Artemis Accords) and liberalization of space through the entry of private space players (e.g., Intuitive Machines). It necessitates expanding current near-Earth space domain awareness (SDA) operation systems and knowledge to the relatively unexplored cislunar region. Besides the traditional complexities, xGEO orbits (orbits beyond the geosynchronous Earth orbit (GEO) region) face additional challenges because of highly non-linear and non-Keplerian dynamics, which results in inaccuracies in uncertainty propagation and state estimation. Further challenges include …

High-Order Dynamic Mode Decomposition For Multidimensional Harmonic Retrieval, Yanming Zhang, Steven Gao, Lijun Jiang Jan 2025

High-Order Dynamic Mode Decomposition For Multidimensional Harmonic Retrieval, Yanming Zhang, Steven Gao, Lijun Jiang

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Estimating channel parameters such as azimuth, elevation, Doppler shift, and delay is a key challenge in wireless communication, often formulated as a multidimensional harmonic retrieval (MHR) problem. To address this, we propose a high-order dynamic mode decomposition (HODMD) framework for robust frequency estimation from high-dimensional signals in noisy environments. The HODMD approach combines high-order singular value decomposition (HOSVD) to decompose tensor data into a core tensor and mode matrices, with dynamic mode decomposition (DMD) to extract frequencies from the imaginary parts of the DMD eigenvalues. Simulation examples validate the effectiveness of the proposed method, demonstrating its efficiency in solving MHR …

Multidirectional laminated composites are essential for load-bearing structures, especially under frequent impact loading. While existing modeling techniques simulate various impact damage modes, our understanding of the underlying mechanisms, specifically the initiation and progression of intralaminar distal cracks and interlaminar delamination, needs improvement. Validating these mechanisms is crucial for enhancing modeling accuracy and expediting the design process. In this work, we propose a three-dimensional finite element modeling (3D FEM) approach aimed at elucidating the impact damage mechanisms in multidirectional carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP). Our model incorporates cohesive zone models (CZM) to simulate the behavior of intralaminar cracks at distal points …

Microwave Photonics-Assisted Interrogation Of Fiber-Optic Interferometric Sensors With Joint Frequency-Time Domain Analysis, Ruimin Jie, Jie Huang, Chen Zhu

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Fiber-optic interferometers are widely used in localized sensing applications due to their compact size, high sensitivity, and immunity to electromagnetic interference. In this paper, we propose and experimentally demonstrate a novel interrogation scheme for fiber-optic interferometric sensors, utilizing microwave photonics (MWP) and joint frequency-time domain analysis. As a proof of concept, a miniature fiber in-line Fabry-Perot interferometer (FPI) is integrated with a microwave photonic single-passband filter, enhanced by a dispersion compensation module to improve sensing performance. By applying an inverse Fourier transform to the system's complex frequency response, the time-domain representation of the signal is obtained, translating spectral shifts of …

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Additive manufacturing (AM) has increased in popularity in recent years due to improvements in efficiency over traditional manufacturing methods. Furthermore, the availability of electrically conductive fused deposition modeling (FDM) filaments has opened the door to the manufacture of conductive structures, including frequency selective surfaces (FSSs). Traditionally, the performance of an FSS is verified experimentally through electromagnetic (EM) measurement of the FSS's reflection and/or transmission response. However, this verification approach is not ideal for rapid, in situ inspections due to the time-consuming measurement process, expensive and complicated equipment, and difficult to interpret results. To this end, active microwave thermography (AMT), a …

This paper introduces a recursive parallel dynamic mode decomposition (RPDMD) scheme tailored for multidimensional harmonic retrieval (MHR), specifically applied to MIMO wireless channel sounding. The RPDMD algorithm is devised to address the complexities inherent in multidimensional scenarios, leveraging the dynamic mode decomposition (DMD) framework within a recursive parallel structure. Initially, the observed tensorial multidimensional harmonic data is transformed into a two-dimensional matrix format along the r-th dimension. Subsequently, DMD dissects this matrix data into eigenvalues and their associated modes. The real and imaginary components of the DMD eigenvalues yield damping factors and frequencies in the r-th dimension, respectively. Furthermore, recursive …
