Redesigning Executive Incentives: The Rising Role Of Subjective Performance Measures, Zackery D. Fox Jan 2025

Redesigning Executive Incentives: The Rising Role Of Subjective Performance Measures, Zackery D. Fox

Faculty Publications

Despite the growing use of subjective performance incentives used in executive bonuses, empirical evidence on their effectiveness remains inconclusive. This study explores three aspects of subjective metrics in bonus plan design: their prevalence, the goals they target, and their impact on managerial behavior and firm outcomes. First, I document 53.8 percent of CEO bonus plans include at least one subjective performance measure, and among these plans, an average of 38.9 percent of total bonus weight is allocated to these measures. Using machine learning, I show subjective metrics target incentives related to employees, firm culture, and executive performance. Second, using the …

Experimental Investigation Of A Wall-Bounded Dual Jet Flow For Varying Reynolds Number: Flow Visualisation, Hydrodynamic Characteristics, And Associated Heat Transfer, P. J. Murphy, S. Alimohammadi, S. M. O'Shaughnessy

Articles

A wall bounded dual jet is the combination of a wall jet, flowing adjacent to a solid boundary, and a second parallel flowing jet offset from the boundary by some distance. The dual jet flow is distinctly different to that of either wall or offset jet, particularly in the region near the jet exit plane. This study represents just the 2nd experimental investigation of the flow characteristics of a dual jet flow past a solid surface. The primary aim of the present investigation is to capture flow data to accompany the dual jet thermal data previously published by the authors …

Instructional Designer Perspectives On The Pursuit Of Quality In Online Course Design, Jason K. Mcdonald, Stephen C. Yanchar

Faculty Publications

In this qualitative study we investigated the experiences of instructional designers as they sought to build quality into online courses. Through semi-structured interviews, we explored what enabled and hindered their pursuit of quality, how they experienced their efforts in this regard, what mattered to them, and complexities that accompanied this pursuit. Our analysis of participant experiences suggested four themes: (1) connections between quality and designers’ ability to act autonomously; (2) connections between quality and collaborative, team-based relationships; (3) ambivalence due to tensions between autonomy and collaboration; and (4) ways of coping with limits on autonomy and collaboration. We conclude our …

Social Care Worker: The Shaping Of An Emerging Title., Martin Power

Irish Journal of Applied Social Studies

The inclusion of the title social care worker in the Health and Social Care Professionals Act (2005) was a crucial development in the journey toward the professionalisation of social care work. With the two year grand-parenting window for entry to the register closed at the end of November 2025, the regulation of social care work has now begun. While this will mean that a definitive number rather than estimates of the number of social care workers in Ireland will be available, ambiguities remain. For example, in spite of the passing of two decades since the inclusion of social care worker …

Research Outputs: 2025-Present

This paper proposes Directional Modulation (DM) for secure millimeter-wave (mmWave) on-body communication, where security is enhanced by leveraging multipath propagation. The double two-ray ground reflection model is employed to analyze a two-antenna Multi-Input Single-Output (MISO) system placed on human skin. The system operates at 24 GHz with polarization tangential to the skin. Key parameters such as antenna-separation, antenna-to-skin spacing and phase difference between transmitter antennas are varied to analyze the resulting path gain. The results obtained from analytical model are experimentally validated using Yagi antennas placed over a forearm phantom. Based on the findings, the DM technique is implemented. The …

Multi-Level Explainability In Radiomic-Based Classification Of Multiple Sclerosis And Ischemic Lesions, Nighat Bibi, Kathleen M. Curran, Ronan P. Killeen, Jane Courtney

Research Outputs: 2025-Present

Differentiating multiple sclerosis (MS) from ischemic stroke lesions on MRI remains a clinical challenge due to their similar appearances as white matter hyperintensities. We propose a radiomics-based machine learning framework that integrates multi-level explainable AI (XAI) techniques to support transparent and clinically meaningful lesion classification. Radiomic features are extracted from standardized MRI scans and used to train multiple classifiers, with Random Forest achieving the best performance (accuracy: 91.24%, F1: 86.54%). The framework incorporates four complementary explanation layers: global insights using SHAP, local interpretability via LIME, counterfactual reasoning with DiCE, and clinical narrative generation using GPT-based language models. This layered approach …

From Design To Deployment: A Holistic Perspective On Design Frameworks, Stability Analysis, And Control Innovations Of Dc Microgrid Architectures, Sandipan Patra, Malabika Basu, Shafi Khadem

Research Outputs: 2025-Present

Now-a-days, DC microgrids (DCMGs) are gaining significant traction due to their higher reliability, simpler control strategies and the absence of challenges like synchronisation, harmonics, reactive power regulation, and frequency control. However, integrating various and distributed energy resources in the same DC bus complicates the regulation of the DC bus voltage and power sharing. Various DCMG design architectures have been proposed to enhance power availability, efficiency, and reliability. These architectures usually can be classified into four main types, i.e., single bus, multi-bus, bipolar bus, and reconfigurable bus topologies. Diverse control strategies, including centralised, decentralised, distributed, and hierarchical control with different architectures, …

Disclosure Benchmarking By Lawyers: Evidence Fromthe Ipo Setting, Michael S. Drake, Jeff Mcmullin, Kenneth Merkley, Chase Potter, John Treu

Faculty Publications

Lawyers play an important advisory role in drafting financial reports, yet empirical evidence documenting the influence of external legal counsel on this process remains sparse. This study focuses on a specific aspect of lawyers’ drafting process: the practice of reviewing disclosures previously filed by other issuers—a practice termed “disclosure benchmarking.” Using initial public offering (IPO) disclosures as the setting, we find that disclosure benchmarking is associated with amore efficient Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) review process. We further find that it is associated with several measures of disclosure quality, including disclosures that are less likely to be revised in subsequent …

The Influence Of Financial Data Subscriptions On Analyst Research, Braiden Coleman, Travis Dyer, Mark Lang Jan 2025

The Influence Of Financial Data Subscriptions On Analyst Research, Braiden Coleman, Travis Dyer, Mark Lang

Faculty Publications

We use disclosed “source” data from analyst reports to infer brokerage financial data subscriptions (FDS) and investigate their effects on analyst research. When brokerages add FDS, their analysts’ forecast accuracy increases. Effect sizes are at least as large as those for analyst experience, busyness, and brokerage size. Benefits are largest for less experienced and busier analysts with less private access to management forecasting over longer horizons. Although adding new FDS benefits individual analysts, there is substantial overlap in FDS across brokerages, leading to homogenized market views. Specifically, when brokerages have overlapping FDS, their analysts’ forecasts, timing, boldness, recommendations, report content, …

The Future Performance Implications Of Non-Gaap Motivated Investment, Minkwan Ahn, Theodore E. Christensen, Ryan G. Johnson, Melissa F. Lewis-Western Jan 2025

The Future Performance Implications Of Non-Gaap Motivated Investment, Minkwan Ahn, Theodore E. Christensen, Ryan G. Johnson, Melissa F. Lewis-Western

Faculty Publications

We investigate whether consistent non-GAAP reporting is associated with investment efficiency. Prior research finds a positive association between non-GAAP reporting and investment levels, concluding that it represents overinvestment. We corroborate this positive association, but additional tests are not consistent with the conclusion of inefficient overinvestment. Specifically, we explore the relation between investment and future cash flows as a proxy for the realization of investments in positive net present value projects. We find that the investments of firms that consistently report non-GAAP metrics are associated with similar or higher future cash flows than the investments of firms reporting only GAAP earnings, …
