Neural Acceleration Of Graph Partitioning, Vishvam Patel Jan 2025

Neural Acceleration Of Graph Partitioning, Vishvam Patel

Theses

Graph Partitioning is a critical problem in numerous scientific and engineering domains including social network analysis, VLSI design, and many more. Spectral methods are known to produce quality partitions while minimizing edge cuts for a wide range of problems. However, the computational cost associated with the calculation of the Fiedler vector, an eigenvector associated with the second smallest eigenvalue of the graph Laplacian, remains a significant bottleneck. In this paper, we present an neural acceleration approach to spectral bisection partitioning by replacing the traditional eigenvalue calculation with a simple artificial neural network model to approximate the fiedler vector. We demonstrate …

Nonlinear Dynamics And Data Driven Modeling, Mattan Tseng Jan 2025

Nonlinear Dynamics And Data Driven Modeling, Mattan Tseng

Theses

The research areas of dynamics and data-driven modeling overlap in existing literature. Some research uses dynamical systems as a test bed while developing new modeling methods. Other papers attempt to use data-driven modeling as a tool to better understand, or potentially predict the behavior of a dynamical system. The primary goal of this thesis is to further the symbiotic relationship between these two research areas. Firstly, this paper provides a concrete example of how a basis function decomposition of the Lorenz system can provide a quantitative performance metric for data-driven modeling methods. Secondly, a novel application of an existing modeling …

This classification stage is essential as it allows the subsequent compression approaches …

Performance Comparison Of Variable Center Body Configurations For A 25 Mm Rotating Detonation Rocket Engine, Kaito Jonathan Durkee Jan 2025

Performance Comparison Of Variable Center Body Configurations For A 25 Mm Rotating Detonation Rocket Engine, Kaito Jonathan Durkee

Theses

Rotating detonation rocket engines (RDREs) are propulsion devices that harness circumferentially traveling detonation waves, providing theoretical benefits compared to classical, deflagration-based combustors. Because of the integration challenges posed by typical annular (Center Body, CB) RDREs, a cylindrical (Center Bodiless, CBL) chamber geometry is attractive. To understand the corresponding trade-offs for small-scale devices, the performance and operational characteristics for a 25 mm with removable 15 mm center body are compared using gaseous methane and hydrogen with oxygen, operating at varying equivalence ratios and at a total mass flow rate of 0.076 kg/s and varying mass flow rates at an equivalence ratio …

Subterranean Drought Classification And Ecological Risk In Karst Systems, Shaelyn Deal Jan 2025

Subterranean Drought Classification And Ecological Risk In Karst Systems, Shaelyn Deal

Theses

Cave ecosystems depend on stable groundwater inputs, yet no standard method exists for detecting subterranean drought. This study develops a framework to define and monitor drought in karst cave systems by adapting surface-based hydrologic indicators. Using long-term water level data from Bobcat Cave in northern Alabama, we identified drought events through percentile-based thresholds and evaluated multiple surface metrics, including the Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI) and deep-layer soil moisture, as predictors of cave drought severity. Random Forest models supported the selection of key indicators and informed classification thresholds. These thresholds were then applied across the Middle Tennessee Elk watershed to map …

Unbound Subgenres : Overlapping Age Categories In Contemporary Romance And Their Implications, London Stevenson Jan 2025

Unbound Subgenres : Overlapping Age Categories In Contemporary Romance And Their Implications, London Stevenson

Theses

This thesis aims to highlight the importance of genre labelling in contemporary romance fiction and the larger implications that come from the misuse of labels. Considerations of the genre based on narrative elements (Regis, 2003; Michelson, 2022), age categorization (Cart, 2011; Tribunella, 2007), and emerging market conditions (McAlister, 2018; Stewart, 2013) have generated considerable discussion over the last twenty-five years. While each of these scholars draws important conclusions about romance and its subgenres, none of them consider the significance of reader opinion, which is now enhanced due to literary digital spaces. In this paper, I examine nine romance novels for …

Sidelobe Reductions In Linear And Circular Phased Array Antennas Based On Hybrid Synthesis Techniques, Eli C. Brothers Jan 2025

Sidelobe Reductions In Linear And Circular Phased Array Antennas Based On Hybrid Synthesis Techniques, Eli C. Brothers

Theses

The concentration of electromagnetic waves within an angular space is made possible by radiating devices, typically realized in the form of an antenna. Hence, energy emitted or received outside of the intended field of view is manifested in the sidelobes and minor lobes of a radiation pattern, of which sidelobes are commonly responsible for unwanted interference and signal spread. To mitigate these issues, this study seeks to investigate the efficacy of a hybrid synthesis technique based on electrically displaced phase center antenna (E-DPCA) and partially-tapered methods in reducing the sidelobes of linear and planar arrays by optimizing the excitations of …

Evaluation Of Strain-Rate Sensitivity Of 3k70pw/Inf114 Woven Fiber-Reinforced Composite Material, Elias James Gerstein Jan 2025

Evaluation Of Strain-Rate Sensitivity Of 3k70pw/Inf114 Woven Fiber-Reinforced Composite Material, Elias James Gerstein

Theses

Fiber reinforced composites have seen continued use in aerospace and automotive industries due to their inherent high strength-to-weight ratios, which makes them ideal choices for vehicles where fuel economy is an important design factor. However, it is necessary for structures in these industries to preserve the life and safety of passengers in the event of a crash; thus, crashworthiness of these vehicles must be tested. Many finite element material models for simulating composite materials exist, but few take strain rate effects into account, which is important for accurate modeling of dynamic crash scenarios. LS DYNA MAT_213 is a material model …

An Evaluation Of The Idm Car-Following Model : Simulation And A Dynamical Systems Perspective, Trevor Mcclain Jan 2025

An Evaluation Of The Idm Car-Following Model : Simulation And A Dynamical Systems Perspective, Trevor Mcclain

Theses

The Intelligent Driver Model (IDM) is a car-following model that has existed since the early 2000s, existing as one of the most widely used follow-the-leader models to simulate safe and realistic driver behavior. In this work, the IDM is used to evaluate the suitability of ROS 2-Gazebo for vehicle simulation, showing that significant non-determinism is present within the simulation. Additionally, we evaluate the effects of delay and an inserted Followerstopper car following model on the traffic dynamics of the system. Specifically, the generation of stop-and-go waves in idealized traffic from a dynamical systems perspective is examined. We also show that …

A Mutually Exclusive 3d Convolution Based Time Dilation Framework For Future Frame Prediction In Video Streams Of Natural Events, Benjamin Robinson Jan 2025

A Mutually Exclusive 3d Convolution Based Time Dilation Framework For Future Frame Prediction In Video Streams Of Natural Events, Benjamin Robinson

Theses

In this thesis, a framework for predicting future frames from videos of naturally occurring processes will be presented. This is achieved by learning the underlying physical laws of the natural process through the exploitation of spatiotemporal features from the frames of the video. Our framework defines windows containing frames at varying time intervals, which we call dilations, and uses them to predict future frames using a 3D convolutional neural network (CNN). The network architecture accepts six time-dilated windows of input video frames and computes spatiotemporal features for each window maintaining the exclusion of the resulting features across three phases of …

Effects Of Band-K Reordering On Sparse Tensor Formats For Parallel Architectures, Shae Nicolas Bolt

Theses

This thesis presents a background in sparse tensor formats and a study of the effects of Band-K and lexi-ordering on the HiCOO sparse tensor format using the matricized tensor times Khatri-Rao product (MTTKRP). We provide a background of sparse tensors and tensors in general. We cover several foundational sparse tensor formats including CSR, BCSR, and COO, and extensions to those formats HiCOO and CSR-K. Furthermore, we discuss methods of reordering tensors using Band-K and lexi-ordering. Finally, we modify HiParTI to supporting Band-K reordering over slices and benchmark the results against lexi-ordering and natural ordering.

Evaluating The Accuracy Of Johnson-Cook Strain Rate Sensitivity For Fcc Aerospace Structural Materials, Sydney Carlota Resnick

Theses

Understanding aerospace materials’ strain rate sensitivity is crucial for accurate designs and analysis for structural performance in dynamic loading conditions, such as rocket launches, airplane collisions, and debris impacts. Three common aerospace face-centered cubic (FCC) metals are evaluated through various strain rate tests and FEA and simulation modeling. Quasi-static and intermediate tests are performed on a hydraulic load frame, and dynamic tests are run on a split-Hopkinson pressure bar, all in tensile motion. This covers the range of strain rates from 1x10-3 s-1 to 1x103 s-1. Results reveal little strain rate sensitivity at room temperature for A286 steel and AL7075 …

Heat Transfer And Aerodynamic Losses Caused By Additively Manufactured Turbine Blades Enhanced By Micro-Machining And Chemical Polishing, Mason Hancock Jan 2025

Heat Transfer And Aerodynamic Losses Caused By Additively Manufactured Turbine Blades Enhanced By Micro-Machining And Chemical Polishing, Mason Hancock

Theses

As turbine engines are pushed to operate at higher temperatures and pressure ratios, turbine blades are forced to interact with more extreme conditions. Additive manufacturing (AM) offers new possibilities for meeting these challenges by allowing the fabrication of complex shapes from advanced materials like GRX-810, an alloy designed to maintain strength and durability at extreme temperatures. However, one of the trade-offs with AM is its inherently rough surface finish, which can vary depending on how the surface is treated after printing. This thesis investigates how different surface treatment methods, including micromachining and chemical polishing, as well as the untreated, as-built …

Optimizing Reliability And Design Efficiency Of Liquid Rocket Engines : A Structural Margin Approach For The Early Design Lifecycle, Mason Tudor Jan 2025

Optimizing Reliability And Design Efficiency Of Liquid Rocket Engines : A Structural Margin Approach For The Early Design Lifecycle, Mason Tudor

Theses

This thesis introduces a reliability-based design methodology aimed at mitigating costs incurred during the Test-Fail-Fix cycle for Liquid Rocket Engines (LREs) by addressing the limitations of the standard Factor of Safety (FoS) approach. By integrating a neural network informed by a structural model into a Bayesian framework for uncertainty quantification, the methodology enables the characterization of structural margin and early analysis of failure risks in the design lifecycle. A generalized 3D component geometry is subjected to typical LRE loading environments within Finite Element Analysis software to gather data for stress and strength distributions. These distributions serve as a foundation for …

How Does Psychopathology Impact The Trajectory From State To Trait Mindfulness?, Veronica O'Brien Jan 2025

How Does Psychopathology Impact The Trajectory From State To Trait Mindfulness?, Veronica O'Brien

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Previous research has found that higher levels of trait mindfulness protect against psychopathology (e.g., Chiesa & Serretti, 2013; Desrosiers et al., 2013; Sevilla-Llewellyn-Jones et al., 2018); however, the research on state mindfulness and psychopathology is more mixed. These mixed findings suggest that some clients with higher levels of psychopathology may have greater difficulty engaging with mindfulness practice thereby hampering their progression towards trait mindfulness and its associated benefits. The present study sought to explore how psychopathology (i.e., anxiety, trauma, alcohol use, and depression) relates to the growth of state and trait mindfulness. The present study recruited 274 participants from a …

Perceived Credibility Of Allegations Of Sexual Assault Across Victim Race And Mental Health History, Liyah C. Morgan Jan 2025

Perceived Credibility Of Allegations Of Sexual Assault Across Victim Race And Mental Health History, Liyah C. Morgan

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Previous research examined the effect of victim gender and rape myth acceptance (RMA) on perceptions of victim credibility; however, little attention has been given to the impact of victim race and mental health history, and even fewer studies have explored the intersection of these two identities. The primary purpose of the current study was to identify factors affecting understanding of perceived credibility of victims of sexual assault, specifically in terms of victim race and mental health history. The study also examined the role of RMA on perceptions of credibility and explored participant attitudes related to color-blind racial attitudes and mental …

Impact Of Costume And Rape Myths On Perceptions Of The Need For Consent In Interactions With Cosplayers, Kiana Monique Perez-Jimenez Jan 2025

Impact Of Costume And Rape Myths On Perceptions Of The Need For Consent In Interactions With Cosplayers, Kiana Monique Perez-Jimenez

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Research on fandom communities is relatively understudied. Specifically, perceptions surrounding consent, rape myth acceptance, and other factors such as gatekeeping attitudes and experiences with discrimination are understudied and undertheorized (Hale, 2014). Historically, sexual harassment has been a pervasive issue in spaces like video gaming communities, especially toward women (Barak, 2005). It is important to further investigate these behaviors in different areas, such as conventions (i.e., cons), because, like in video gaming communities, sexual harassment has been an ongoing issue in con spaces (Zarin, 2017). The current study addressed how cosplayers' dress impacts key aspects of sexual harassment, including perceptions of …

South Asian American Experiences Of Microaggressions And Wellbeing: The Moderating Role Of Social Support, Archita Birla Jan 2025

South Asian American Experiences Of Microaggressions And Wellbeing: The Moderating Role Of Social Support, Archita Birla

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Although the South Asian American community is rapidly expanding in the United States (South Asian Americans Leading Together [SAALT], 2015), there remains a dearth of psychological research regarding the impacts on mental health and wellbeing affecting this diverse community. Racial microaggressions, or verbal or behavioral actions indicating hostile or negative attitudes toward marginalized individuals (Sue et al., 2007), negatively impact People of Color (POC) mental health and wellbeing (Forrest-Bank & Jenson, 2015a; Nadal, Wong, et al., 2015). Some research exists on South Asian American communities and microaggressions (Houshmand et al., 2014; Poolokasingham et al., 2014) but there is limited research …

Resilience And Grit In Children And Adolescents With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Danielle Oehring

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Resilience is the way in which an individual positively adapts to challenging or difficult life experiences. This process is marked by adjustments to external and internal demands through mental, emotional, and behavioral flexibility. Grit is perseverance and passion for long-term goals. Although grit and resilience have been researched in children and adolescents, there is a gap in the literature for how these variables relate to developmental disorders, like autism spectrum disorder, in children and adolescents. This study aimed to explore the relationship between autism spectrum disorder and internalizing and externalizing symptoms and whether grit and resilience moderates these relationships. Based …

The Moderating Effects Of Self-Compassion On The Relationship Between Shame And Depression In Military Populations, Sarah Foran Jan 2025

The Moderating Effects Of Self-Compassion On The Relationship Between Shame And Depression In Military Populations, Sarah Foran

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

The U.S. Military has faced a continuous rise in mental health concerns reported by service members and veterans (Currier et al., 2017; Rosenheck & Fontana, 2007). Studies of military personnel have found that up to 15% of service members meet the criteria for experiencing depression (Shen et al., 2012). Often, individuals with military experience face numerous stressors that positively contribute to this experience of depression and feelings of shame (Bradbard et al., 2014; Litz et al., 2009). Military culture (often emphasizing shame related to mental health) has also been found to put military personnel at higher risk of experiencing depression …
