Field Learning And Employability In Geography, Earth, And Environmental Sciences, Jacqueline Dohaney, Alison Stokes Jan 2025

Field Learning And Employability In Geography, Earth, And Environmental Sciences, Jacqueline Dohaney, Alison Stokes

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

Society needs talented Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences (GEES) graduates to help address global challenges, but the pathway to professional employment is seldom easy. After graduation, most GEES graduates enter professions requiring broad transferable skills and 'value-added' experiences to thrive in the modern workforce. GEES educators can therefore enhance employability by using field experiences to introduce and develop transferable skills valued by employers. Here, we define employability for our context, explore GEES graduate skills and describe the ways that communication, project management and personal and professional skills can be embedded in field experiences guided by the available literature. We identify …

Analytical Inconsistencies In The Measurement And Reporting Of Ip25, Ipso25 And Related Biomarkers For Paleo Sea Ice Reconstruction, Simon T. Belt, Lukas Smik Jan 2025

Analytical Inconsistencies In The Measurement And Reporting Of Ip25, Ipso25 And Related Biomarkers For Paleo Sea Ice Reconstruction, Simon T. Belt, Lukas Smik

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

IP25 and related biomarkers are commonly used for Arctic and Antarctic sea ice reconstruction. With a growing number of laboratories performing their measurement, we reviewed many publications spanning the period 2007–2024 in order to assess analytical rigour. We found a number of common shortfalls in analytical protocols, or at least how they are reported, which may have important implications for future synthesis studies and meta-data analyses. Here, we outline some of these shortcomings and provide suggestions of how to improve both data acquisition and reporting.

Productivity History Of The Central Okhotsk Sea And Northeast Russia During The Mid-Pleistocene Transition, Li Lo, Wei Zhu Chen, Julie Lattaud, Yi Hsueh Tsai, Simon T. Belt, Lukas Smik, Yuen Tung Kiki Wan

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

Biological productivity, shaped by climate and environmental factors, is critical to climate feedback mechanisms and the global carbon cycle. This study investigates the measurement of six phytosterols (β-sitosterol, stigmasterol, campesterol, dinosterol, epi-brassicasterol, and 24-methylene cholesterol) from core MD01-2414 in the central Okhotsk Sea, covering the past 1.5 million years (Ma). These sterols serve as proxies for terrestrial and marine productivity in the central Okhotsk Sea and northeast Siberia. Sterol concentrations reflect global glacial/interglacial cycles between 1.2 and 0.6 Ma, with higher and lower values during interglacial and glacials intervals, respectively. X-ray fluorescence (Ba/Ti) and total organic carbon/total nitrogen (TOC/TN) ratios …

Development Of Some Neural Network Models For Non-Negative Matrix Factorization: Dimensionality Reduction, Prasun Dutta Jan 2025

Development Of Some Neural Network Models For Non-Negative Matrix Factorization: Dimensionality Reduction, Prasun Dutta

Doctoral Theses

Recent research has been driven by the abundance of data, leading to the develop- ment of systems that enhance understanding across various fields. Effective machine learning algorithms are crucial for managing high-dimensional data, with dimension reduction being a key strategy to improve algorithm efficiency and decision-making. Non-negative Matrix Factorization (NMF) stands out as a method that transforms large datasets into interpretable, lower-dimensional forms by decomposing a matrix with non-negative elements into a pair of non-negative factors. This approach addresses the curse of dimensionality by dimensionally reducing data while preserving meaningful information. Dimension reduction techniques rely on extracting high-quality features from …

Young Women In Cities: Urbanization And Gender-Biased Migration, Yumi Koh, Jing Li, Yifan Wu, Junjian Yi, Hanzhe Zhang

Research Collection School Of Economics

Young women outnumber young men in cities in many countries during periods of economic growth and urbanization. This gender imbalance among young urbanites is more pronounced in larger cities. We use the gradual rollout of Special Economic Zones across China as a quasi-experiment to establish the causal impact of urbanization on gender-differentiated incentives to migrate. We highlight the role of the marriage market in increasing rural women’s chance of marrying and marrying up in urban areas during rapid urbanization.

Gauging Growth Risk In An International Financial Centre: Some Evidence From Singapore, Hwee Kwan Chow Jan 2025

Gauging Growth Risk In An International Financial Centre: Some Evidence From Singapore, Hwee Kwan Chow

Research Collection School Of Economics

This paper applies the growth-at-risk framework proposed by Adrian et al. (2019) to Singapore, an international financial centre whereby financial shocks are intermediated away quickly. We gauge near-term risks around growth projections taken from the survey of professional forecasters by accounting for financial stress in both local and global financial markets, as well as worldwide economic uncertainty. The conditioning variables are first linked to future growth through quantile regressions, and the estimated quantiles are fitted with skew t-distributions to produce full predictive distributions. Scenario analysis reveals that greater local financial strain tends to widen the uncertainty of growth outlook, higher …

Anatomical Depiction: How Showing A Product's Inner Structure Shapes Product Valuations, Seo Yoon Kang, Junghan Kim, Arun Lakshmanan Jan 2025

Anatomical Depiction: How Showing A Product's Inner Structure Shapes Product Valuations, Seo Yoon Kang, Junghan Kim, Arun Lakshmanan

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Anatomical depiction is a technique where the product is decomposed into components that are spatially arranged in a layer-by-layer manner to visually explicate its inner structure. The authors demonstrate that anatomical depiction, compared to non-anatomical depiction, enhances product valuation. This effect occurs because anatomical depiction elicits a ‘coming together’ of the inner components in consumers’ minds thereby evoking a gestalt image of the product – a process labeled simulated assemblage. The elicitation of simulated assemblage in turn boosts their confidence in the product’s performance. Two field experiments first demonstrate that anatomical depiction leads to greater engagement in online settings such …

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

The Part Three report identifies the role and opportunity for application of the Natural Capital Asset and Risk Register evidence, provided in Reports Part One and Two, in appraisal of Nature-based Solutions (NbS) options within Flood and Coastal Erosion Risk Management (FCERM). Interventions applying NbS aim to increase extent and condition of specific habitat assets (ecosystem assets), therefore, considerable environmental benefits, as well as relevant cross-policy objectives are met when NbS are considered as an option. As such, the linked contribution to ecosystem services and associated benefits to people, and where possible economic value, needs to also be documented when …

The Chatgpt Fact-Check: Exploiting The Limitations Of Generative Ai To Develop Evidence-Based Reasoning Skills In College Science Courses, Ursula Holzmann, Sulekha Anand, Alexander Y. Payumo

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Generative large language models (LLMs) like ChatGPT can quickly produce informative essays on various topics. However, the information generated cannot be fully trusted, as artificial intelligence (AI) can make factual mistakes. This poses challenges for using such tools in college classrooms. To address this, an adaptable assignment called the ChatGPT Fact-Check was developed to teach students in college science courses the benefits of using LLMs for topic exploration while emphasizing the importance of validating their claims based on evidence. The assignment requires students to use ChatGPT to generate essays, evaluate AI-generated sources, and assess the validity of AI-generated scientific claims …

Transgenerational Plasticity Research: Challenges And Opportunities, Caitlin Mcandry, Alastair J. Wilson, Peter A. Cotton, Manuela Truebano Jan 2025

Transgenerational Plasticity Research: Challenges And Opportunities, Caitlin Mcandry, Alastair J. Wilson, Peter A. Cotton, Manuela Truebano

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

Transgenerational plasticity (TGP) is a type of non-genetic inheritance whereby one generation's environment affects a subsequent generation's phenotype. It can influence the persistence of organisms in stressful climatic conditions through allowing rapid phenotypic change. TGP has been proposed to have the potential to alter an organism's response to selective forces or buffer their effects, yet the interaction of these two processes is neither well understood nor often accounted for via appropriate experimental design. The rapid expansion of TGP research in recent years has led to a lack of clarity surrounding terminology for different phenomena, sometimes undermining the interpretation of research. …

An Initiative To Improve Sevoflurane Gas Flows Among Anesthesia Providers In An Academic Medical Center, Amy Dinicola

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Abstract

An Initiative to Improve Sevoflurane Gas Flows Among Anesthesia Providers in an

Academic Medical Center

Amy DiNicola

Background: While global warming has been introduced as the most significant public health threat of the 21st century, 10% of carbon emissions in the United States come from healthcare (Shoham et al., 2022). Sevoflurane is a volatile anesthetic gas that requires a carrier gas mixture of oxygen with air or nitrous oxide to reach a patient during anesthesia. The extra gas flow often exceeds physiologic needs, and the excess gets wasted into the atmosphere. Reducing the additional flow of carrier gas can …

Reuse Of Calcium Carbonate (Caco3) Recovered From Discarded Carpets As Filler In Fiber-Reinforced Polymer (Frp) Composites, Roshan Devkota

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Over four billion pounds of carpet are discarded annually in the United States, making carpet waste a significant environmental concern. Calcium carbonate (CaCo₃) constitutes up to 45% of the mass of most synthetic carpets. Reusing this CaCo₃ as a filler in the rapidly growing fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) industry, which is projected to reach USD 10.38 billion, presents a low-cost, practical approach to developing a market-based solution to post-consumer carpet waste.

This study investigates the reuse of CaCo₃ recovered from discarded carpet backing as a filler in FRP composites, focusing on its mechanical viability in comparison to virgin CaCo₃. The methodology …
