Effect Of Lanthanum Doping On Phase Transition, Piezoelectric And Energy Storage Properties Of Lead-Free 0.93(Bi0.5na0.5)Tio3‒0.07batio3 Ceramics, Pathit Premwichit, Songphop Jaila, Sasiporn Prasertpalichat Jan 2025

Effect Of Lanthanum Doping On Phase Transition, Piezoelectric And Energy Storage Properties Of Lead-Free 0.93(Bi0.5na0.5)Tio3‒0.07batio3 Ceramics, Pathit Premwichit, Songphop Jaila, Sasiporn Prasertpalichat

Journal of Metals, Materials and Minerals

In this study, lead-free (Bi0.465Na0.465Ba0.07)(1–x)LaxTiO3 (x=0.0‒0.04) ceramics were synthesized using a conventional solid-state reaction method. All samples showed a single-phase perovskite structure with pseudocubic symmetry. The dense microstructure revealed a decrease in average grain size as x increased. La3+ addition stabilized polar nanoregions (PNRs), shifting the ferroelectric to relaxor phase transition temperature (TF₋R=104℃ for x=0.0) to below room temperatures as La3+ content increased. This resulted in a transition from a rectangular to a relaxor-like thin P–E loop (x≥0.01), indicating a shift from ferro-electric (FE) to relaxor ferroelectric (RFE), which …

Aluminium Oxide Particles-Containing Organogels For Cleaning Of Optical Glass Surfaces, Galina Vladimirovna Lyamina, Oksana Valerievna Dubinina, Alfa Edison I Lela

Journal of Metals, Materials and Minerals

Hypothesis:  Some types of cleaning methods are not very effective and can actually increase damage to the optical parts being cleaned. As an alternative to these methods, we propose the use of gel-like substances to remove contaminants from optical surfaces. We have developed a method for cleaning optical glass surfaces that uses organogels, which are based on copolymers of methyl methacrylate and methacrylic acid. These organogels are loaded with polyethylene glycol, and aluminum oxide particles (Al2O3), which help to effectively remove contaminants without causing damage to the surface.   Experiments:  Al2O3 nanoparticles prepared by a Nano Spray Dryer were added to …

Feedback Loops: Feedback Thresholds, Patrick Barry

Articles

The idea that folks "Become more comfortable about talking because they see other people do it" may seem simple. But the effect can be profound-on jury pools, in classrooms, and when trying to get a robust dose of feedback from an initially reticent group.

Is The Obbba Compatible With Pillar 2?, Reuven S. Avi-Yonah Jan 2025

Is The Obbba Compatible With Pillar 2?, Reuven S. Avi-Yonah

Articles

In this installment of Reflections With Reuven Avi-Yonah, Avi-Yonah compares House and Senate sections of the One Big Beautiful Bill Act and examines the potential effect on international tax relations. On May 22 the House of Representatives passed the One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBBA). The House version of the OBBBA extended the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act tax cuts but did not significantly change its international provisions. It did, however, contain proposed section 899, which would have imposed enhanced taxation on residents and corporations from countries that have “discriminatory or extraterritorial taxes,” defined to include primarily the undertaxed profits …

Statutory Liquidation, Daniel Deacon Jan 2025

Statutory Liquidation, Daniel Deacon

Articles

When might practice by the political branches settle the meaning of legal text? That question has mostly been taken up in the constitutional setting, with one strand of scholarship taking inspiration from Madison's statement in Federalist No. 37, that "{a}ll new laws ... are considered as more or less obscure and equivocal until their meaning be liquidated and ascertained by a series ef particular discussions and aqjudications." The prospect that post-enactment practice might liquidate the meaning of statutory text has been comparatively underexamined. That's not surprising. Under modern textualism, post-enactment considerations would seem to have little place. And under Chevron …

Examining State Climate Superfund Legislation, Madison Calhoun, Rachel Rothschild, Jonathan Binder, Elenda Mihaly, Justin Mankin, Ben Lippard, Mary Wood

Articles

There has been an influx of “climate superfund” bills introduced and adopted in state legislatures across the country. Modeled after the federal Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA), these laws are designed to recover costs from large emitters of greenhouse gases (GHGs) to pay for climate adaptation infrastructure. Following CERCLA’s strict liability framework, major polluters in New York and Vermont would be required to pay into state-managed funds in proportion to their shares of total GHG emissions; California, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, and Oregon have proposed similar bills. On March 19, 2025, the Environmental Law Institute hosted a …

Nanaboozhoo And Derrick Bell Go For A Walk, Matthew L.M. Fletcher Jan 2025

Nanaboozhoo And Derrick Bell Go For A Walk, Matthew L.M. Fletcher

Articles

When the Anishinaabeg were new to Anishinaabewaki, they knew little about how to fend for themselves. The animals and plants took pity on them and taught the Anishinaabeg. One winter, as the food stores of the Anishinaabeg were running out, an ininaatig (maple tree) saw an Anishinaabe innini (man) weakly scavenge for food. The ininaatig decided to offer part of itself to the Anishinaabeg. The ininaatig told the innini to cut off a branch. Ininaatigwabo, delicious, thick maple syrup, oozed from the stump. There was enough to feed the innini for many days. And there were many, many ininaatigoog …

Pumpable Hours: Legal Protections For Lactating Individuals Through The Lens Of The Legal Profession, Elise Gonzalez Jan 2025

Pumpable Hours: Legal Protections For Lactating Individuals Through The Lens Of The Legal Profession, Elise Gonzalez

American University Journal of Gender, Social Policy & the Law

The Supreme Court denied women the right to be admitted to the legal profession in 1872. Since this ruling, women have entered the legal profession with force in growing numbers. Today, women comprise nearly 55% of law students across the country and 40% of practicing attorneys in the United States. Despite the growing number of women in the legal profession, women are often reminded of the profession’s sexist history, particularly during a period that is uniquely connected to women—motherhood.

We Can't Apply From The Grave: Why The Asylum Standard Of Proof Fails Those Who Need It Most, Hilana Said Jan 2025

We Can't Apply From The Grave: Why The Asylum Standard Of Proof Fails Those Who Need It Most, Hilana Said

American University Journal of Gender, Social Policy & the Law

A woman in Florida sits in front of her TV, unsure if the sound of static is coming from shock or the screen. Her eyes reflect the fires that blaze from within her church in Alexandria, Egypt. Numbly, the pads of her fingers attempt to call family members, praying that, for once, they skipped service. She lets go of a breath she did not know she was holding. The time between now and another attack exists on a clock that she cannot see. But she knows it is ticking.

The Inadequacy Of Perpetuating Vestiges Of Segregation In K-12 Curriculum: The Justiciability Of Reviewing Duties To Adequacy In Florida's Education Clause, Soumya Sreerama Jan 2025

The Inadequacy Of Perpetuating Vestiges Of Segregation In K-12 Curriculum: The Justiciability Of Reviewing Duties To Adequacy In Florida's Education Clause, Soumya Sreerama

American University Journal of Gender, Social Policy & the Law

Although the Supreme Court declared segregation the most abusive affront to education and ruled to eliminate vestiges of segregation “root and branch,” those same roots have grown unchecked to remain prominent today. One of the undercurrents of state-sponsored discrimination that has escaped desegregation remedies is the skewed, whitewashed curriculum that permeated K-12 classrooms in Jim Crow America. More troubling, is that those vestiges of an inadequately biased curriculum are still slithering in students’ courses today. Although student movements and education reformists have attempted to counter skewed curricula by supplementing them with separate ethnic studies courses, states like Florida recently passed …

Property Problems In The New Non-Marriage: Inheritance, Eliot Tracz Jan 2025

Property Problems In The New Non-Marriage: Inheritance, Eliot Tracz

American University Journal of Gender, Social Policy & the Law

Marriage equality has been a hotly contested topic for many years, in both the court of public opinion and in courts of law. Major Supreme Court cases have found that marriage is a fundamental right, yet issues such as marriage outside of one’s race or to a person of the same gender have still been topics of litigation. At times, the very definition of marriage has been at issue, but throughout all of this litigation, courts have consistently defined marriage as a relationship between two people.

From The Kkk To The Modern Day: How An Accurate Understanding Of History Can Inform The Proper Standard For Punishing Civil Rights Conspiracies Under 42 U.S.C. § 1985(3), Bair Srivastav

American University Journal of Gender, Social Policy & the Law

Following the Civil War, Congress passed the Reconstruction Amendments, which secured political rights for newly freed slaves and ushered in a new era for the United States. The Union defeated white Southerners on the battlefield and removed former Confederates from the halls of political power. But white Southerners were still Confederates in spirit. Full of racial hatred, they did not perceive a new era of freedom, but a world twisted into an unnatural order where African Americans walked freely amongst white people and participated in the political process of Southern society. In response to the extension of basic freedoms to …

Harmful Connections: How Tort Law Can Address Algorithmic Account Recommendation Harms And Protect Youth Social Media Users, Francesca Kennedy

American University Journal of Gender, Social Policy & the Law

In 2023, the United States Surgeon General published an advisory to bring an urgent public health issue affecting America’s youth to the nation’s attention. The urgent public health issue was the ongoing negative impact of social media on children and adolescents. The report revealed that ninety-five percent of youths aged thirteen to seventeen use social media. Exposure to harmful content poses a risk to their mental health, including body dissatisfaction, disordered eating, depression, and, in extreme cases, death. Their mental health is also harmed by predatory behaviors and interactions with malicious adults that target and exploit minors on internet platforms. …

Quality Improvement Of Polycarbonate Medical Device By Moldex3d And Taguchi Doe, Upoma Saha, Wael Mokhtar

Open Access Publishing Support Funded Articles

Incorporating a new design combined with a thermoplastic material without having a prior process database may cause numerous defects in the molded part. Along with the initial setup cost, the scrape due to defects can add additional costs to the production. To address such issues, the numerical analysis tool Moldex3D was used to conduct simulations, and Taguchi Design of Experiment (DOE) was performed to optimize the process parameters. For this study, a classic medical device like the safety goggle model has been chosen as a subject. An amorphous material, polycarbonate, was used because of its transparent and significant thermal properties. …

Erk1/2 Inhibition Alleviates Diabetic Cardiomyopathy By Suppressing Fatty Acid Metabolism, Erin Mclean, Caroline De Roo, Annabel Maag, Megan Coble, Jefferson Cano, Ruijie Liu

Open Access Publishing Support Funded Articles

Background: Diabetes mellitus is associated with morphological and functional impairment of the heart primarily due to lipid toxicity caused by increased fatty acid metabolism. Extracellular signal-regulated protein kinases 1 and 2 (ERK1/2) have been implicated in the metabolism of fatty acids in the liver and skeletal muscles. However, their role in the heart in diabetes remains unclear. In this study, we tested our hypothesis that pharmacological inhibition of ERK1/2 alleviates cardiac remodeling in diabetic mice through a reduction in fatty acid metabolism.   Methods: ERK1/2 phosphorylation in diabetes was determined both in vitro and in vivo. H9C2 cells were subjected …

Strengthening Social-Emotional Learning For Elementary Students Through Explicit Instruction, Miah Phalen

Honors Program Theses

Teaching social-emotional learning skills has been found to yield various behavioral and academic benefits for students, yet there has been limited research into effective instructional practices for teaching these skills. This qualitative study examined the extent to which specific explicit instruction elements are present in kindergarten lessons from three evidence-based SEL curricula: Kindness in the Classroom, Leader in Me, and Second Step. Each of these lessons was rated on a 0-2 scale regarding the presence of clearly established learning goals, lesson opening, modeling, guided practice, independent practice, opportunities for feedback, lesson closure, and skill sequencing. Results of this study indicated …
