Comparison Of Post-Exercise Lipid Oxidation Rates Between Lower And 1 Upper-Body Resistance Training In Well-Trained Females, Alyssa L. Parten Jan 2025

Comparison Of Post-Exercise Lipid Oxidation Rates Between Lower And 1 Upper-Body Resistance Training In Well-Trained Females, Alyssa L. Parten

Dissertations

INTRODUCTION: Lipid oxidation (LOx) is a relevant physiological process linked to metabolic health. Despite growing interest in resistance training (RT) as a means to influence substrate utilization LOx responses in females remain poorly characterized, with no study examining whether lower- and upper body RT elicits different LOx patterns during the recovery period following exercise. This distinction may  be relevant because lower-body exercises involves greater fat-free mass (FFM) and energy expenditure,  whereas upper-body exercises recruit less FFM, potentially influencing metabolic effects.

PURPOSE: To  determine if LOx rates after exercise differ between lower- and upper-body RT in well-trained females.

METHODS: Twenty-two females …

Menstrual Cycle Phase Exerts No Influence On Running Economy Parameters In Recreational Female Runners, Savanna K. Knight Jan 2025

Menstrual Cycle Phase Exerts No Influence On Running Economy Parameters In Recreational Female Runners, Savanna K. Knight

Dissertations

Hormonal fluctuations that occur throughout the menstrual cycle (MC) have been shown to affect substrate utilization and oxygen uptake when running. These MC induced changes could manifest as altered running economy (RE) when expressed as energy cost (Ec) and oxygen cost (O2c). Therefore, the current study aimed to determine if RE differs between MC phases, the early follicular phase (E-FP) and the mid-luteal phase (M-LP). Twelve eumenorrheic female recreational runners (ages 25 ± 4y; VO2peak 40.9±4.6 ml/kg/min) completed submaximal RE bouts (60%, 70%, 80% of VO2peak) during the E-FP and M-LP. During each bout, oxygen consumption (VO2), respiratory exchange ratio …

Journal of Case Learning & Exceptional Learners

Increasing numbers of disabled and neurodivergent students are enrolling in postsecondary institutions, including teacher preparation programs. Although teacher educators strive to prepare their students to use strategies and provide support effectively in their future classrooms, many of these educators need tools to offer comparable services to disabled and neurodivergent preservice teachers. Specifically, disabled and neurodivergent preservice teachers have reported barriers to disclosing their disabilities and receiving access to needed accommodations. Instead, they report feeling scrutinized as to whether they are capable of being teachers due to their disability. These experiences seem to be especially pronounced during their teaching placement, and …

Bridging Theory And Practice: The Power Of A Mathematics Clinic In Teacher Preparation, Kelly A. Clark, Chrystal O. Dean, Josie Barnes, Hadley Seifert, Lauren Young

Journal of Case Learning & Exceptional Learners

The Council for Exceptional Children (CEC) and the National Council on Teaching Mathematics (NCTM) released a joint statement on the importance of preparing special education teachers to teach mathematics (NCTM & CEC, 2024). They provided implications for institutions of higher education with teacher preparation programs, one of which included requiring special education majors to take a minimum of one mathematics course with mathematics content directed specifically to PK-12 mathematics and include field-based learning opportunities within that course. Powell (2015) indicated that effective preparation in mathematics related to special education should include multiple facets, including planned field experiences. Planned field experiences …

This case also highlights the value of acknowledging challenges that exist in small special educator preparation programs …

Ai And The Doctoral Schism: Institutional Resistance Vs. Adoption In Doctoral Education, Valerie A. Storey Jan 2025

Ai And The Doctoral Schism: Institutional Resistance Vs. Adoption In Doctoral Education, Valerie A. Storey

All Faculty and Staff Scholarship

This paper examines the schism emerging in doctoral education regarding the integration of Generative AI (GenAI). Drawing on Rogers’ Diffusion of Innovations Theory (DIT), this analysis examines how higher education institutions are responding to the disruptive potential of AI in doctoral writing, research, and dissertation defense. A historical examination spanning from Socrates’ resistance to written texts (370 BCE) through contemporary AI debates reveals a recurring pattern: initial resistance to technological innovations, followed by gradual institutional adoption as new frameworks emerge that accommodate the technical tools while preserving the core values of graduate education. DIT-grounded analysis reveals three key factors driving …

Fake Parts, Real Threats: Combating The Infiltration Of Counterfeit Parts In The Aviation Industry, Jennifer Su

Journal of Air Law and Commerce

This Comment addresses the historic and current-day issue of counterfeit aircraft parts in the aviation industry. Counterfeit parts—also known as fake parts, bogus parts, unapproved parts, and suspected unapproved parts (SUPs)—are any parts that do not conform to the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration’s (FAA) standards and regulations. Given the lackluster availability of public information and coverage over the issue, this Comment aims to bring more attention to the very real threat of fake aircraft parts.

From the beginning of U.S. commercial aviation and the creation of regulations governing aircraft designs and parts, counterfeit parts have plagued the aviation industry. Although …

Zoom To The Bar: How Law School Remote Instruction Affected Bar Exam Performance, Michael Conklin Jan 2025

Zoom To The Bar: How Law School Remote Instruction Affected Bar Exam Performance, Michael Conklin

Southern Illinois University Law Journal

The COVID-19 pandemic had a profound effect on nearly every aspect of life starting in 2020. Existing research measuring the relationship between COVID restrictions and academic performance has found significant harm across numerous settings. This first-of-its-kind study is designed to measure if a similar phenomenon is present with performance on state bar exams taken by law school graduates. The counterintuitive results from this study—that more restrictive COVID lockdowns correlated with improved bar examination performance—spark discussion regarding lockdowns, legal education, remote learning pedagogy, and the bar exam. Furthermore, the findings of this study will hopefully serve as a powerful catalyst to …

Modifying The Miller Test To Supplement Board Of Education V. Pico: A Novel Approach For Resolving Censorship Cases In School Libraries, Michael Lee Jan 2025

Modifying The Miller Test To Supplement Board Of Education V. Pico: A Novel Approach For Resolving Censorship Cases In School Libraries, Michael Lee

Southern Illinois University Law Journal

In recent years, the increase in book censorship laws and attempts in school libraries across the United States has led to concerns about the propriety of such censorships. This has drawn much attention to the Supreme Court’s decision in Board of Education v. Pico, which established the standard for evaluating the constitutionality of removing books from school libraries. Yet, by analyzing, under the Pico standard, the constitutionality of Texas, Florida, and Illinois’s laws pertaining to book censorship, this Note demonstrates that the Pico standard is practically limited and difficult to apply. Therefore, a more applicable test for analyzing the …

Eviction In Illinois: How A Struggling System Will See Relief In Court-Sponsored Mandatory Mediation, Alexander Roby Jan 2025

Eviction In Illinois: How A Struggling System Will See Relief In Court-Sponsored Mandatory Mediation, Alexander Roby

Southern Illinois University Law Journal

Residential evictions are a major part of the civil legal caseload in Illinois. Current procedures keep the adversarial nature of the legal system in mind but are ultimately inefficient when faced with the sheer load of cases, especially in difficult economic times. Those with few means also face challenges, from maintaining housing stability to understanding and interacting with the complex legal system regarding an eviction action. To facilitate a more efficient system, give uncomplex parties a better experience, and derive superior outcomes, this Note proposes a significant change to the current eviction procedural process. A mandatory mediation stage is inserted …

Cross-Border Limitations And Exceptions To Copyright: “Powered By Ai.”, Trimble, Marketa

Santa Clara High Technology Law Journal

Businesses and institutions that wish to utilize copyright protected works in multiple countries face a multiplicity of national copyright laws; although national copyright laws have been harmonized in accordance with several international treaties and harmonized even more in the European Union member states by European Union legislation, countries’ copyright laws continue to vary. The multiplicity of national copyright laws raises costs of transnational operations, including for businesses and institutions that rely on limitations and exceptions to copyright (“L&Es”) in multiple countries. For example, AI companies might want to rely on L&Es to train and deploy their AI in multiple countries, …

Video games are a significant part of many people’s lives, offering immersive worlds, memorable experiences, and music that stays with us long after the controller has been put down. Fans and players who love video game music often express their appreciation by creating music covers, arranging sheet music, and performing video game compositions. However, the legal complexities surrounding copyright are not always top of mind for these creators. This paper explores the intersection of copyright law and fan-created video game music, focusing on covers and sheet music arrangements. It outlines how ownership of music in the video game industry is …

Rethinking Science Education Practices: Shifting From Investigation-Centric To Comprehensive Inquiry-Based Instruction, Dana Lynn Morris Jan 2025

Rethinking Science Education Practices: Shifting From Investigation-Centric To Comprehensive Inquiry-Based Instruction, Dana Lynn Morris

Education Faculty Publications and Presentations

Inquiry-based learning (IBL) has become a cornerstone of contemporary science education, championed by frameworks like the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). While designed to engage students actively in scientific practices, inquiry is often misapplied, resulting in an overemphasis on hands-on investigations. This investigation-centric approach can overshadow other essential phases of inquiry, leading to a superficial understanding of scientific concepts. This paper introduces a Comprehensive Inquiry-Based Science Education (CIBSE) Framework, grounded in responsive teaching and aligned with the NGSS scientific and engineering practices. The framework emphasizes student reasoning, explanation, and the balance between short exploration and scaffolded support, aiming to offer …

“I Have Nowhere To Go” : An Examination Of Post-Eviction Housing Outcomes Of Evicted Tenants, Alex Farrington, Natalie J. Cholula, Lisa K. Bates

Urban Studies and Planning Faculty Publications and Presentations

Given the extent of the eviction crisis in Oregon, it is crucial to investigate what happens to tenants after they are displaced from their homes. This report investigates three main questions concerning tenants’ post-eviction housing outcomes: Where do tenants live after they have been evicted? How do post-eviction housing outcomes affect tenants’ health, finances, and safety? How do rental assistance and legal assistance affect post-eviction housing outcomes?

Nearly two thirds of evicted tenants moved directly into some form of homelessness, including sheltered, unsheltered, or doubled-up homelessness. These findings indicate that Oregon’s eviction crisis and homelessness crisis are closely linked.

Tenants …

Ecosocialism, Degrowth, And Global South Thought: Critical Legal Transformations, Nicholas F. Stump Jan 2025

Ecosocialism, Degrowth, And Global South Thought: Critical Legal Transformations, Nicholas F. Stump

William & Mary Environmental Law and Policy Review

This Article explores how Critical Legal Research (CLR) can help drive transformations of our ecological political economy towards true system change. CLR entails a critical legal theory–informed approach to legal and broader socio-legal research. After articulating the CLR framework, this Article explores its potential in the context of leading and intertwined bodies of theory for transformative change: ecosocialism, degrowth, and Global South and Indigenous thought. Next, this Article offers concrete avenues to help pursue such emancipatory change—i.e., specifically focusing on the popular conception of an “ecosocialist transition.” Ecosocialist transition strategies include non-reformist reforms, dual power, a radical just transition, and …

Disparities In Maternal Healthcare: Examining The Impact Of Social Determinants Of Health On Provider Care Quality, Rishita Anumukonda

Honors Undergraduate Theses

Poor maternal health outcomes among racially and socioeconomically marginalized populations are a major public health concern in the United States. Effective clinician discussions during prenatal and postpartum care play an essential role in promoting maternal and infant well-being. However, the content of provider-patient discussions in maternal care and how it varies for patients exposed to different social determinants of health has not yet been well explored. This study aims to examine whether healthcare provider discussions about key maternal health topics, including preventative health tips, risk factors, and available resources, differ based on social factors such as income level and race. …

Rhythm Against Poethics, Jayvyn Dacas Jan 2025

Rhythm Against Poethics, Jayvyn Dacas

Honors Undergraduate Theses

This thesis stages an auto-poetic ethnography that listens to, and moves with, the anterior spaces of Black life. Those murmurs, hums, musical hesitations, and infrastructural vibrations that refuse capture by dominant epistemic regimes. Drawing from Ramon Amaro’s reading of Sylvia Wynter, Katherine McKittrick and Alexander Weheliye’s reflections on sound, Fred Moten’s insights on displacement, and Tendayi Sithole’s attention to the phonographic, the project situates music production as method and unworlding. Through engagements with the 808, sampling, sound systems, and embodied listening across Florida. Spaces like the warehouse, the party, record stores, and community become the work of Black voices, and …

A Story Of Oppression A Psychological And Creative Approach, Juan R. Morillo

Honors Undergraduate Theses

The aim of this project is to survey the manner in which oppression is expressed in selected works of literature. It is a topic that not only am I familiar with through my studies of literature and psychology, but one that I, as well as every Venezuelan expatriate has witnessed and felt for their country. The project focuses on social and political oppression, using the current Venezuelan crisis as a focal point, and selected literary sources as a framework. I will analyze dystopian classics such as George Orwell's 1984 and Ray Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451, as well as Margaret Atwood’s The …
