School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses
Abstract. Craig McHardyAn assessment of the dietary bioavailability of TiO2 and inorganically carbon-based nanomaterials in rainbow trout, using the ex vivo gut sac technique and a in chemico digestibility assay.Carbon based engineered nanomaterials (ENMs) are an emerging contaminant within modern society, as such their environmental risk assessment is of high importance. Testing for their persistence, toxicity and bioaccumulation potential is important for regulatory bodies to fully understand the hazard posed. To date, data on the bioaccumulation potential of these ENMs is lacking, especially within fish. A tiered approach to bioaccumulation testing has been posed in which precursory tests such as …

Exploring Topological Defects In Janus Bilayers Of Cr(I,Cl)3 And Cr(I,Br)3, Taksh Patel, Suyash Rijal, Charles Paillard, Changsong Xu, L. Bellaiche
Exploring Topological Defects In Janus Bilayers Of Cr(I,Cl)3 And Cr(I,Br)3, Taksh Patel, Suyash Rijal, Charles Paillard, Changsong Xu, L. Bellaiche
2025 Research Poster Competition
Chromium halides such as CrI3 have attracted interest recently. They possess the remarkable property of sustaining long-range magnetic order down to the thickness of only a few layers [1, 2]. However, CrI3 lacks Dzyaloshinskyii– Moriya interaction (DMI) due to inversion center present between the adjacently bonded Chromium atoms.
The inversion center can be removed through the fabrication of Janus Monolayers by adding another trihalide along with Iodine to synthesize the material, that is to grow Janus monolayers Cr(I, X)3 where X is another halide such as Cl or Br [3].
Previous work has predicted non-trivial spin textures such as …
The Use Of An In Chemico Digestibility Assay To Reduce The In Vivo Fish Bioaccumulation Testing Of Nanomaterials, Craig Mchardy, Nathaniel J. Clark, Robert Clough, Richard D. Handy
The Use Of An In Chemico Digestibility Assay To Reduce The In Vivo Fish Bioaccumulation Testing Of Nanomaterials, Craig Mchardy, Nathaniel J. Clark, Robert Clough, Richard D. Handy
School of Biological and Marine Sciences
Currently for engineered nanomaterials (ENMs), there are no alternatives to bioaccumulation testing in fish as prescribed by OECD TG 305. New approaches are being sought, in order to reduce the numbers of animals used and address the ethical concerns associated with the use of vertebrates in such testing. This study aimed to demonstrate the value of an alternative method — the in chemico digestibility assay — as a tool to assess the bioaccumulation potential of ENMs. Titanium dioxide ENMs, or their equivalent bulk form, were incorporated onto a commercial fish diet and the fish digestion process was simulated in vitro …

Transient Lives: Trans & Non-Binary People’S Encounters With The Harms Of Work, Siggi Auerbach
School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences Theses
This ethnographic criminological research aimed to address several theoretical gaps in the existing literature surrounding trans people, vulnerability, and victimisation. The overarching objective of this study was to offer a revised account of the harms trans people encounter in relation to their work via a new theoretical framework which is informed by ultra-realist criminology, critical hate studies. The theoretical framework was informed by contemporary criminologies of the harms of work, as opposed to the harms the institution of work is argued to inflict upon intersectional aspects of the individual’s social identity. This thesis aimed to reconceptualise the harms trans workers …

Modeling And Simulation Of Carbon-Neutral Strategies For Methanol Production, Omar Almaraz Barrios
Modeling And Simulation Of Carbon-Neutral Strategies For Methanol Production, Omar Almaraz Barrios
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Methanol is a versatile chemical that can be used as a fuel, a solvent, a feedstock for other chemicals, and a hydrogen carrier. Methanol production from natural gas, which is mainly composed of methane, is a well-established process that involves steam reforming, methanol synthesis, and methanol purification. However, this process is energy-intensive and emits large amounts of carbon dioxide, which contributes to global warming and climate change. Therefore, there is a need for alternative methods of methanol production that are more efficient and environmentally friendly. The overall objective of this research is to develop simulation models of two novel methanol …
Economic Behavior And Policy Distortions: Evidence From Firms And Households, Seth Joseph Carter
Economic Behavior And Policy Distortions: Evidence From Firms And Households, Seth Joseph Carter
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
In Chapter 1, I reopen the question of whether U.S. firms experience effective tax decreases directly resulting from federal lobbying expenditures by introducing more rigorous causal-inference testing. I first model lobbying as a productive input for the legislator, affecting firm tax outcomes by influencing the share of scarce legislative attention afforded to industry tax priorities. Using multi-industry, firm-level data from 2007 to 2022, I exploit percentage changes in non-industry lobbying as a proxy for political competition facing firms through a novel application of Bartik, shift-share instrumental variable estimation and two-stage residual inclusion. Effects of induced firm lobbying shifts on reported …

Dynamically Scaling Biomimetic Robots Through Parallel Viscoelastic Actuators, Foster Olaf Holmquist
Dynamically Scaling Biomimetic Robots Through Parallel Viscoelastic Actuators, Foster Olaf Holmquist
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Robots provide a unique proving ground for testing scientists’ understanding of neuromuscular systems. Synergistically, mimicking biological control laws and mechanics could offer robotics the robust and adaptive locomotion of animals. Previous work has utilized the wealth of research on insect biomechanics to develop scaled robotic models but doing so presented a problem: while these robots’ larger scale has simplified manufacturing, the scale has also shifted its mechanics from those of the modeled organisms. While animals walk, forces are generated that describe their mechanics and influence motor control. The musculoskeletal structure and stretch of muscles result in viscous and elastic forces, …
The Effect Of Cerebellar Feedback On The Spatial Processing Of Conspecific Signals In The Electrosensory System, Dakota Ray Miller
The Effect Of Cerebellar Feedback On The Spatial Processing Of Conspecific Signals In The Electrosensory System, Dakota Ray Miller
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Animals have evolved sensory systems to help decipher important environmental signals that are vital for their survival. Feedback pathways are necessary to allow these signals to stand out in a noisy background, enabling the animal to focus on them more effectively. The electrosensory system of Apteronotus leptorhynchus allows the fish to sense the modulations caused by other conspecifics to allow for proper responses during social interactions. Electroreceptors detect these EODs, and afferent nerves project these signals to the ELL, where electrosensory information is projected to other parts of the brain. Cerebellar feedback to the ELL allows the suppression of lower …
Reactive Model-Free Control For Underactuated Vehicles Operating In Resource-Constrained Environments, Austin Lane Sponaugle
Reactive Model-Free Control For Underactuated Vehicles Operating In Resource-Constrained Environments, Austin Lane Sponaugle
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Buoyancy-driven, underactuated vehicles offer a compelling solution for long-duration autonomous operations in constrained environments. By leveraging buoyancy to generate lift, these vehicles can remain aloft for extended periods with minimal power requirements, making them well-suited for applications in atmospheric monitoring, planetary exploration, and communications. However, their limited actuation authority, strong coupling with environmental forces, and operating domains introduce significant control challenges, including nonlinearity, sensitivity to external disturbances, and limited observability.
This work investigates the design and implementation of lightweight, reactive model-free control strategies that enable robust autonomy in such constrained settings. A digital Extremum Seeking Controller (ESC) is first implemented …
A Quality Improvement Initiative To Decrease Sugammadex Expenditures, Jordan Austin Gardo
A Quality Improvement Initiative To Decrease Sugammadex Expenditures, Jordan Austin Gardo
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Abstract
A Quality Improvement Initiative to Decrease Sugammadex Expenditures
Jordan Gardo
Introduction/Background: The manufacturer’s suggestion in the dosing of the Sugammadex is
generally dosed at 2-4 mg/kg of total body weight (TBW) depending on the extent of
neuromuscular blockade. Evidence suggests that in the morbidly obese population, this
can lead to excessive dosing due to the drug's hydrophilic properties, making it less cost-
effective. Dosing based on adjusted body weight (ABW) leads to dose reductions while
achieving full reversal of neuromuscular blockade as measured by quantitative train-of-
four monitoring, resulting in lower costs from decreased vial usage.
Purpose: The purpose …
Comparative Analysis Of Electrode Encapsulation Reliability: Planar Vs. Thermoformed Interdigitated Neural Electrodes In Biomedical Engineering, Tatum Peyerl
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Durable dielectric encapsulation is crucial for the long-term function of implantable neural electrodes; however, the reliability of curved, thermoformed coatings remains underexplored. This study addresses that gap by comparing planar (non-thermoformed) and thermoformed interdigitated neural electrodes (IDEs) encapsulated in Polyimide-2611. Both device types underwent accelerated in vitro aging in phosphate‑buffered saline (PBS) at 67 °C for approximately 91 days, simulating two years of physiological exposure. Post-accelerated aging evaluation included electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) from 0.1 Hz to 100 kHz to monitor moisture‑induced leakage, and high‑voltage breakdown testing under saline immersion to assess dielectric strength. After aging, all electrodes maintained impedance …
End-To-End Neural Network Based Optimal Control For Asymmetric Quadrotor Uas, Ross O'Hara
End-To-End Neural Network Based Optimal Control For Asymmetric Quadrotor Uas, Ross O'Hara
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This thesis presents the development and evaluation of a neural network-based optimal controller for asymmetrically loaded quadrotor unmanned aerial systems (UAS). Traditional control strategies such as PID are typically designed under symmetry assumptions and often degrade in performance when faced with significant loading asymmetries. To address this, a six-degree-of-freedom quadrotor model incorporating rotor dynamics and center-of-mass offsets was developed. A trajectory optimization framework using MATLAB’s fmincon solver generated over 50,000 energy-optimal trajectories across symmetric and asymmetric conditions. These were used to train a range of feedforward neural network architectures in a full-factorial study.
The best-performing controller was identified, having five …

Abstract
Developing a Simplified Method of Measuring Ultrafine Particulate Matter Dose
Concentrations for Diesel Emissions
Ultra-fine particulate matter (UFP), particularly from diesel emissions, poses significant health and environmental risks due to its small size and potential to penetrate deep into the respiratory system. Accurate measurement of UFP concentrations is essential for assessing exposure and mitigating health impacts. However, current methods for measuring UFP can be complex, time-consuming, and costly. This study aims to develop a simplified method for efficiently measuring UFP concentrations from diesel emissions, which will enable easier and more widespread monitoring of air quality and public health impacts. …

Individual And Collective Properties Of Tunable Photochemical Belousov-Zhabotinsky Micro-Reactors, Kudakwashe Benedict Shumba
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Cell-like model chemical systems are powerful tools that can be used to explore the role of intercellular coupling on population level behaviors in communities of biological cells. Firstly, we present a new method for fabricating such micro-reactors using the photosensitive Belousov–Zhabotinsky (BZ) reaction system employed in silica microparticles. These BZ micro-reactors have a tunable response to photochemical coupling, varying from a fully excitatory response to a fully inhibitory response. Their response can be tuned through variations in either the reactive mixture or, on an individual micro-reactor level, by changes in the synthesis temperature used during the fabrication of the silica …
Authoritarian Control Over Election Administration, Nazar Boyko
Authoritarian Control Over Election Administration, Nazar Boyko
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Street-level election bureaucracy (SLEB) remains one of the least studied aspects of authoritarian elections. Our current understanding of micro-level election administration in autocracies is fragmented and unsystematic. In this dissertation, I develop and test a theory of authoritarian SLEB that comprehensively addresses key elements of election administration: the incentivization and mobilization of election commissioners, the establishment of control over election commissions, the monitoring of their performance, and the post-election reshaping of their personnel composition. Drawing on rational choice theory, I propose a framework in which autocrats are seen as outcome-maximizers who strategically design SLEB to achieve their electoral goals. The …

From Bobcat To Bursts: Multi-Messenger Constraints On Supermassive Black Holes And Binaries, Jessica Sydnor
From Bobcat To Bursts: Multi-Messenger Constraints On Supermassive Black Holes And Binaries, Jessica Sydnor
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Supermassive black hole binaries (SMBHBs) are a natural consequence of hierarchical galaxy formation and evolution. When galaxies merge, their central supermassive black holes (SMBHs) are expected to form bound pairs that evolve from kiloparsec to sub-parsec separations under the influence of dynamical friction, stellar scattering, and gas dynamics. Ultimately, these SMBHs reach the regime where gravitational wave emission dominates and drives the final inspiral and coalescence. Understanding the formation, evolution, and observational signatures of SMBHBs is critical to advancing multi-messenger astrophysics, particularly in the era of pulsar timing arrays (PTAs) and the upcoming Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA), which opens …
Investigation Of Spalling Effects On The Brittle Behavior Of Rectangular Pillars In Underground Stone Mines, Yolver Yesid Jimenez Ibanez
Investigation Of Spalling Effects On The Brittle Behavior Of Rectangular Pillars In Underground Stone Mines, Yolver Yesid Jimenez Ibanez
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Recent catastrophic collapses in U.S. limestone mines have exposed the limitations of traditional empirical design formulas for brittle rock masses. These events, especially those involving slender pillars, underscore that traditional methods often fail to account for progressive, spalling-dominated failure, highlighting a crucial gap in our understanding. This research addresses this issue by conducting a comprehensive investigation into the mechanics of spalling in rectangular stone mine pillars, utilizing advanced three-dimensional numerical modeling with FLAC3D combined with LiDAR-based geometric modeling.
The stability of a pillar is governed by a complex interaction between the in-situ stress field, rock mass properties, and pillar geometry. …
Introduction Of Polar Functional Groups To Pyridinedipyrrolide Zirconium Photosensitizers Through Post-Synthetic Modifications, Marisa Nicole Tordella
Introduction Of Polar Functional Groups To Pyridinedipyrrolide Zirconium Photosensitizers Through Post-Synthetic Modifications, Marisa Nicole Tordella
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Photosensitizers are vital components to applications such as photoredox catalysis, photodynamic therapy, and various avenues of solar energy production. The abilities of transition metal photosensitizers containing precious metals have been well studied over the years. However, because of the growing scarcity of these metals, there has been a shift in finding more earth abundant alternatives. To help fill this gap in the literature, the Milsmann group has developed and studied the photophysical properties of Zr(IV) complexes with various ligand systems. Due to the electron deficient metal center, these complexes exhibit ligand-to-metal charge transfer (LMCT), unlike the metal-to-ligand charge transfer commonly …

Investigating The Physiological, Metabolomic, And Transcriptomic Changes In Response To Telomerase Deletion In Saccharomyces Cerevisiae, Taizina Momtareen
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Telomerase is an enzyme found in rapidly dividing cells that maintains chromosome ends and prevents the loss of genetic information during cell division. When telomerase is inactive, cells gradually lose their telomeres and eventually stop dividing. In yeast, a rare subset of cells can bypass this growth arrest by switching to a recombination-based mechanism to maintain telomeres. Therefore, yeast provides a powerful system to study this adaptation, as telomerase-deficient strains can generate 'survivors' that mimic the Alternative Lengthening of Telomeres (ALT) pathway observed in some human tumors. In this work, my goal was to examine how a telomerase-null (TLC1 …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This dissertation consists of three essays that investigate the environmental and regulatory dimensions of unconventional oil and gas (UOG) development and place-based policy in the United States. The research examines how energy production activities interact with water resource management, regulatory compliance behavior, and regional economic resilience. By integrating empirical modeling, quasi-experimental methods, and policy evaluation, the dissertation provides new insights into how environmental risks and economic tradeoffs are shaped by regulatory constraints, strategic behavior of regulated entities, and government interventions in extractive regions. Managing produced water from unconventional oil and gas (UOG) production is a growing environmental challenge, particularly as …

Understanding and predicting the magnetic behavior of materials from first principles is one of the central challenges in condensed matter physics. This dissertation presents a systematic framework that bridges ab initio calculations, many-body physics, and effective spin models to analyze magnetic materials in particular, but also more general quantum systems. Starting from the electron many-body Hamiltonian and the second quantization formalism, we derive Density Functional Theory (DFT) and explain how magnetic properties emerge from exchange interactions and can be interpreted as perturbations to the magnetization density. To capture these effects efficiently, we construct Heisenberg models from first principles using the …
