Using The High Resolution Rapid Refresh To Validate A Novel Forecast Methodology, Sylvia M. Garmong Jan 2025

Using The High Resolution Rapid Refresh To Validate A Novel Forecast Methodology, Sylvia M. Garmong

Electronic Theses & Dissertations (2024 - present)

NOAA’s High-Resolution Rapid Refresh (HRRR) is frequently used by forecasters for short term predictions and although the model performs well in many metrics, previous study (Fovell and Gallagher 2020) identified temperature and windspeed biases within the boundary layer using radiosonde and surface observations. The current work uses a forecast drift metric to study how model forecasts evolve with time and distance to radiosonde sites. The metric is calculated by subtracting model analysis from forecasts at the same valid time, creating a proxy for bias. HRRR data on native model levels are obtained from the Google Cloud and Amazon Web Services …

Deep Convection, Lightning, And Inertio-Gravity Waves: An Analysis Of Precipitation And Wave Dynamics In The Congo Basin, Stephen L. Solimine Jan 2025

Deep Convection, Lightning, And Inertio-Gravity Waves: An Analysis Of Precipitation And Wave Dynamics In The Congo Basin, Stephen L. Solimine

Electronic Theses & Dissertations (2024 - present)

The lack of an extensive in situ observation network throughout equatorial Africa makes it difficult to monitor the Congo climate system. Model and reanalysis products have been used to fill informational gaps but often produce disparate results. To improve model representation of deep convection over the Congo, it’s important to first understand the influence of various thermodynamic and dynamic forces that may be underrepresented. Although satellite based remote sensing retrievals and reanalysis have their own set of limitations, they can offer a great deal of insight into the climate of regions otherwise lacking in observational networks.

The first section of …

Multimorbidity In Adolescents: The Longitudinal Impact Of Childhood Socioeconomic Trajectories And Health Risk In Adulthood, Savitha Sambandamoorthy Jan 2025

Multimorbidity In Adolescents: The Longitudinal Impact Of Childhood Socioeconomic Trajectories And Health Risk In Adulthood, Savitha Sambandamoorthy

Electronic Theses & Dissertations (2024 - present)

Abstract

Background:

Multimorbidity, defined as the co-occurrence of two or more health conditions (physical, mental, or both), has been thought of as a disease of the elderly, with most studies of multimorbidity focusing on adults and the elderly population. However, co-occurring (multimorbid) health conditions are common in adolescence, and it is important to understand the profiles and patterns of multimorbidity during adolescence, a critical developmental period with long-term implications. Social determinants of health, especially lower socioeconomic status (SES), are linked to higher risk of multimorbidity and poor outcomes in adulthood. However, most of the past studies that have looked at …

Can Deliberate Practice For Inner Skills Enhance Therapist Trainees’ Mindfulness And Presence When Working With Clients?, Edmund W. Orlowski Iii Jan 2025

Can Deliberate Practice For Inner Skills Enhance Therapist Trainees’ Mindfulness And Presence When Working With Clients?, Edmund W. Orlowski Iii

Electronic Theses & Dissertations (2024 - present)

A replicated single-case design was used to assess the effectiveness of therapist trainees’ engagement in deliberate practice for inner psychotherapy skills (Rousmaniere, 2019). Deliberate practice (DP) is a structured approach to therapist skill development that involves repeatedly observing and responding to real or simulated clients (Rousmaniere, 2016). It was reasoned that by attending to their inner experience while repeatedly being exposed to challenging clinical material (e.g., a client’s suicidal ideation) outside of therapy, trainees may reduce their experiential avoidance and thus be more mindful and present in sessions with actual clients.

During the five-week baseline phase of the study, four …

Paraconsistency In Legal Systems: Why Not To Evaluate The Law With Classical Logic, Sydney Coddington Jan 2025

Paraconsistency In Legal Systems: Why Not To Evaluate The Law With Classical Logic, Sydney Coddington

Electronic Theses & Dissertations (2024 - present)

The following paper puts forth an argument for the analysis of legal systems via paraconsistent logics instead of classical logic due to the existence of legal dialetheia - true contradictions born from the law. Given that contradictions lead to absurdity in classical logic, a paraconsistent perspective becomes the clear choice once the existence of legal dialetheia is established. The first half of this argument, therefore, aims to support the work of Graham Priest in establishing legal dialetheia by explaining his view and combatting his opponent, J.C. Beall, who finds such dialetheia to fail beyond the limited scope of a legal …

Phylogenetic Analysis Of Metabolic Enzymes In Hypoxic/Anoxic Conditions In Cetaceans And Cancer, Samerna A. Masih

Electronic Theses & Dissertations (2024 - present)

Cancer cells often exhibit a Warburg-like metabolism, which includes increased fatty acid synthesis and storage that help them survive in hypoxic conditions. This shift is marked by the heightened synthesis and accumulation of fatty acids, acting as a survival mechanism in low-oxygen environments (Baumann et al., 2016). Interestingly, deep-diving whales may utilize a similar metabolic pathway to produce wax esters during their prolonged dives.

Our study focused on exploring the genetic and metabolic similarities between breast cancer cells and deep-diving whales, using computational analyses to investigate lipid metabolism genes. We looked for evolutionarily conserved variations that might reveal adaptive mechanisms …

Framing Ethnicity: How Ideological Threats Shape State Policies Towards The Ethnic Chinese In Southeast Asia, Zheng Wang

Electronic Theses & Dissertations (2024 - present)

Post-colonial multiethnic societies still face significant challenges in nation-building today. Not only do countries follow different paths in dealing with ethnic diversity, but many also shift their strategies across time. State policies towards the ethnic Chinese in Southeast Asia, including accommodation, integration, marginalization, and assimilation, vary along two dimensions: the state’s discrimination towards the ethnic Chinese and the room for negotiation between the state and the ethnic Chinese in formulating these policies. Based on puzzling empirical observations on differing levels of changes in state policies towards the ethnic Chinese in Indonesia, Malaysia, and Singapore in the 1960s and 1970s, my …

Ribosome Hibernation In Mycobacterium Abscessus And Its Effect On Antibiotic Resistance, Ryan Treen

Electronic Theses & Dissertations (2024 - present)

Non-tuberculosis mycobacteria (NTM) represent a diverse repertoire of species, most of which are ubiquitous in the environment. Some NTM species, such as Mycobacterium abscessus, can cause life-threatening infections in people with underlying medical conditions. The clinical incidence of such infections is on the rise, posing an emerging threat to public health. M. abscessus is characterized by intrinsic and acquired antibiotic resistance, complicating treatment strategies. Most chemotherapeutic approaches for M. abscessus infection target the bacterial ribosome, necessitating a better understanding of the physiological processes which confer this resistance. Multiple mycobacterial species respond to zinc-limiting conditions by inducing remodeling and hibernation …

Developing Concepts In Second Language (L2) Science From ‘Bits And Pieces’ Of Prior Knowledge: A Multiple Case Study Of Spanish-Speaking 4th And 5th Graders, María Isabel Martínez-Cuenca

Electronic Theses & Dissertations (2024 - present)

Earth science concepts sit at the intersection of the compounding difficulties English language learners’ (ELLs) face in content-integrated instruction. Emerging first language (L1) skills, emerging L2 language, and the difficulty of science terms interact with second language (L2) content learning. Moreover, L2 science concepts rarely develop incidentally through L2 socialization and instruction in the same naturalistic way as they do in the L1. Leveraging L1 resources may help ELLs in this process, yet there is a dearth of studies that consistently do so. This dissertation explores how, and the extent to which, leveraging ELLs’ pre-existing knowledge may support science and …

Integrable Deformations, T-Dualities And Higher Order Corrections In String Theory, Parita Shah Jan 2025

Integrable Deformations, T-Dualities And Higher Order Corrections In String Theory, Parita Shah

Electronic Theses & Dissertations (2024 - present)

This thesis explores the interplay of hidden symmetries and dualities in string theory, with a particular emphasis on the role of T-duality. As a fundamental symmetry of string theory, T-duality offers a powerful lens through which one can study integrability, solution-generating techniques, and quantum corrections, all essential aspects of modern string theoretic frameworks.

A central focus of this work is the application of the duality covariant formalism of Double Field Theory (DFT) to address problems involving integrable deformations and higher-order quantum corrections. We examine how generalized integrable models can be embedded into DFT and how the formalism captures hidden symmetries …

The Multifaceted Role Of Glutamate At Excitatory And Inhibitory Synapses, Maurice A. Petroccione

Electronic Theses & Dissertations (2024 - present)

Our thoughts, memories, and actions are finely controlled by the coordinated activity of neural circuits in the brain. Prior work has identified a multitude of molecular mechanisms that contribute to the generation of these higher order functions, yet we know very little about how our ability to learn and perform habitual actions change depending on how far neurotransmitters released from neurons can travel away from their point of release. This is the main focus of my work, which I carried out using a diverse toolbox and focusing on two brain regions: the hippocampus and the striatum. The hippocampus controls learning …

Characterization Of Corticotropin Releasing Factor Receptor 2 In Stress-Regulating Regions Of The Mouse Brain, Jennifer J. Lafrican

Electronic Theses & Dissertations (2024 - present)

Sex differences in the morphology of the brain are thought to underlie the sex differences we see in anxiety and depression, where women are twice as likely to be diagnosed when compared to men. Stress, or a disruption to homeostasis, can exacerbate these mood disorders. Corticotropin releasing factor (CRF), and its receptors, play an important role in regulating the stress response. Binding of CRF with CRFR2 has been shown to reduce behavioral and neuroendocrine stress responses, yet whether there are sex differences in CRFR2 expressing neurons and stress-induced activation of these neurons in mice is unknown, in part due to …

Dna And Protein Determinants For P63 Transcriptional Activity, Abigail Mccann

Electronic Theses & Dissertations (2024 - present)

The transcription factor p63 is critical for development of the epidermis and other epithelial-related structures. Mutations in the DNA-binding domain of p63 lead to a range of human developmental disorders characterized by symptoms such as ectrodactyly, painful skin dysplasia, and cleft lip and palate. The TP63 gene is also amplified in squamous cell carcinomas, contributing to tumor pathogenesis. While the importance of p63 in human health is well established, the mechanisms underlying its control of an essential gene network remain unclear. TP63 encodes multiple isoforms with distinct N- and C-terminal domains. The ∆Np63α isoform is directly linked to epidermal development …

Essays On Innovation And Labor Market Benefits, Kyoungah Noh Jan 2025

Unveiling The Cell Composition Of The Olfactory Migratory Mass: Perspectives On Terminal Nerve Formation, Olfactory Development, And Migration Of The Gnrh-1 Neurons, Enrico Amato Jr.

Electronic Theses & Dissertations (2024 - present)

Puberty is a postnatal developmental process required to initiate key sexual maturation events that are necessary for the propagation of species. Signals to initiate these events first begin with the Gonadotropin releasing hormone-1 (GnRH-1) neurons within the hypothalamus. The hormone GnRH-1 released by these neurons is crucial for puberty, fertility and reproductive processes by establishing the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis, regulating release of sex hormones (Progesterone, Estrogen, Testosterone). Conditions related to inability of the GnRH-1 neurons to correctly release GnRH-1 can lead to aberrant or delayed puberty, a condition known as hypogonadotropic hypogonadism (HH). Interestingly, some patients with the hormonal disorder …

Misoscale Vortices In The Eyewall Boundary Layer Of A Tropical Cyclone In A Large Eddy Simulation, Emily A. Lucy

Electronic Theses & Dissertations (2024 - present)

Since the late 1980s, there have been numerous observations of extreme updrafts, gusts, and small-scale rotation in the eyewall of tropical cyclones (TCs). Research aircraft, dropsondes, and, more recently, mobile radars have collected these observations, most often from within the boundary layer. Previous studies have documented dropsondes associated with extreme gusts and updrafts, while others have discussed specific incidents of misoscale features in tropical cyclones. Several high-resolution numerical simulations of TCs have documented similar features. This study uses one such simulation from Worsnop et al. (2017). A small but intense tropical cyclone in a quiescent environment is simulated.

This simulation …

Electronic Theses & Dissertations (2024 - present)

Background: People living with diagnosed HIV (PLWDH) have a higher chance of co-infections and co-morbidities than the general population. When SARS-CoV-2 was first reported in China in December 2019 and later declared a pandemic, it was speculated that PLWDH might be more prone to SARS-CoV-2 infection and severe disease outcomes given their increased vulnerability to other respiratory infections like influenza, pneumococcal pneumonia and tuberculosis. However, several facets of COVID-19 disease in PLWDH are incompletely understood, including whether non-communicable diseases (NCDs) are strong risk factors for severe disease outcomes and death as they are in the general population.

Methods: The data …
