Design, Fabrication, & Laboratory Testing Of A Strain Gage Instrumentation System For Marine Applications, Salem C. Homrighausen Jan 2025

Design, Fabrication, & Laboratory Testing Of A Strain Gage Instrumentation System For Marine Applications, Salem C. Homrighausen

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

A strain gage-based instrumentation system was designed and fabricated to measure the moment present at the base of a mock, diesel-engine snorkel for a submerged vehicle designed to operate in the surf zone. Afterwards, a lab experiment was designed and executed to determine the accuracy of the instrument and a 2-dimensional, matrix-vector equation was formulated to relate pairs of voltages, Vx and Vy, to moments, Mx and My for the experiment. Three versions of this model were built. The first model was created using traditional statics equations governing strain, stress, moment, force. The second and third models were built directly …

Fourier Transformation Of Non-Periodic Functions And Its Application In Computed Tomography, Sabrina Hossain Jan 2025

Fourier Transformation Of Non-Periodic Functions And Its Application In Computed Tomography, Sabrina Hossain

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Fourier analysis plays an important role in signal processing and imaging applications,

with computed tomography (CT) being a prominent example. CT imaging relies on recon-

structing cross-sectional images of objects from multiple projections, a process deeply rooted

in the mathematical framework of the Fourier series and its extensions. This thesis explores

the mathematical principle behind CT, demonstrating how periodic and non-periodic func-

tions can be decomposed into sinusoidal components to facilitate image reconstruction. We

begin by reviewing the Fourier series and its ability to represent periodic signals, and then

extend this concept to non-periodic functions through Fourier transforms. The connection …

Dynamics Of Prey-Prey Mutualism With Varying Carrying Capacity And Herd Behavior In The Presence Of Predator, Felix Dela Djokoto Jan 2025

Dynamics Of Prey-Prey Mutualism With Varying Carrying Capacity And Herd Behavior In The Presence Of Predator, Felix Dela Djokoto

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This study investigates the dynamics of mutualistic relationships between two prey species in the presence of a predator, by taking into account herding in one species along with the influence of carrying capacities between two prey species. These mutualistic dynamics are presented by constructing two mathematical models, namely an indirect and direct mutualism model. As the strength of the symbiotic relationship increases the indirect model goes through transcritical bifurcation to Hopf bifurcation whereas in the direct mutualism model goes through saddle-node bifurcation to Hopf bifurcation.

Geometric Properties Of Positive Definite Matrices: Means, Order, And Metrics, Blaine Dubois Jan 2025

Geometric Properties Of Positive Definite Matrices: Means, Order, And Metrics, Blaine Dubois

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

In this thesis, we study matrix means from a geometric point of view. In particular, we consider divergences of the form Tr[A + B − 2G(A, B)] for certain Geometric-Type matrix means G(A, B). We derive alternative formulations of this distance function through the application of one-sided inverses of G(A, B). When G(A, B) = A#B, we give a curve parametrization of the straight-line path between two points with respect to this semi-metric and present conditions under which this holds for other Geometric-Type means. For read- ability and self-containment, we introduce most of the preliminary concepts to build up to …

Continuing Development Of An Unmanned Vehicle For Conducting Scientific And Engineering Operations In The Littoral Zone, Peter S. Bohn Jan 2025

Continuing Development Of An Unmanned Vehicle For Conducting Scientific And Engineering Operations In The Littoral Zone, Peter S. Bohn

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The beach and near shore are among the most economically and environmentally important regions on earth, yet they remain poorly understood due to the challenges of surveying the surf zone and obtaining other important data during high-energy events. Traditional methods such as wading surveys, small watercraft, and specialized vehicles like the coastal research amphibious buggy (CRAB) are limited by safety risks, high mobilization costs, and restricted operating windows. The work conducted in this effort addresses these limitations by continuing development of a remotely operated vehicle (ROV) intended to be operational in harsh surf conditions to collect high-resolution bathymetric and hydrodynamic …

Diversity Makes Me Uncomfortable: Effects Of Diversity Language On University Student Belonging, Ziena Baker Jan 2025

Diversity Makes Me Uncomfortable: Effects Of Diversity Language On University Student Belonging, Ziena Baker

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Diversity statements and experiences form the first impressions students have of their prospective universities and employers, setting the stage for perceived feelings of belonging, otherness, and comfort within new environments (Baleria, 2021; O’Keeffe, 2013; Starck et al., 2021). Diversity statements can signal feelings of comfort and belonging or feelings of stress depending on the way in which diversity is framed (Chaney, 2022; Trawalter et al., 2016). This is especially true for students, who are more often affected mentally and physically by changes in university diversity perspectives (Sladek et al., 2021) The current study thus uses a novel blood pressure measure …

Solar Energy Prediction Using Advanced Hybrid Machine Learning Models, Jelawi A. Alqhtani Jan 2025

Solar Energy Prediction Using Advanced Hybrid Machine Learning Models, Jelawi A. Alqhtani

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Accurate short-term forecasting of solar power generation is critical for the reliable and cost-effective operation of renewable-based microgrids, where sudden weather-induced variability can compromise grid stability, battery scheduling, and energy trading decisions. Traditional physical and statistical models struggle to capture the complex non-linear relationships and localized weather effects, while individual deep learning architectures often exhibit systematic biases such as chronic under-prediction of peak generation. This thesis proposes a novel Cross-Feedback Ensemble framework that combines the complementary strengths of Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM), Gated Recurrent Unit (GRU), and one-dimensional Convolutional Neural Network (1D-CNN) models through an iterative cross-feedback mechanism and a …

The Limits Of Strategic Adaptation: Continuity And Change In German And Russian Strategic Culture, Andrew W. Rios

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This thesis paper adopts a comparative historical analytical approach to German and Russian strategic culture. It examines numerous historical, cultural, and ideational variables that have guided German and Russian strategic initiatives, particularly since the end of the Cold War. It illuminates the ways in which these factors have contributed to the diverging paths of strategic adaptation adopted by Germany and Russia since the 2022 invasion of Ukraine. Utilizing theoretical concepts from strategic culture theory, historical and sociological institutionalism, and critical juncture theory, this paper argues that the Russian invasion precipitated a fundamental shift in Germany's strategic orientation vis a vis …

Psychology Faculty Articles and Research

Self-organizing systems can shift between stability and flexibility in response to perturbation, a potential adaptive mechanism for understanding biopsychosocial resilience. Inverse Power-Law (IPL) structure, a frequency distribution that describes fractal patterns commonly produced by self-organization, produce measurements of stability and flexibility. This study applies these measures to emotional resilience at the start of the Covid-19 pandemic. Ratings of frequency over the past week (1-5 Likert scale) across 12 emotions (six positive and six negative) gathered in mid-April 2020 as part of a survey of adults’ (N = 4,094) pandemic experiences and health in the USA. The distributions of everyone’s emotion …

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications and Presentations

We present a representer theorem for a large class of variational problems, generalizing regression, finite element methods, and providing techniques for learning partial and ordinary differential equations (PDEs and ODEs). We apply our formulation to the multivariate occupation kernel method (MOCK) for learning dynamical systems from data. Our generalized method outperforms the MOCK method on most tested datasets, while often requiring considerably fewer parameters. Experiments are presented for learning ODEs and PDEs.

The Stochastic Occupation Kernel (Sock) Method For Learning Stochastic Differential Equations, M. L. Wells, Kamel Lahouel, Bruno Jedynak Jan 2025

The Stochastic Occupation Kernel (Sock) Method For Learning Stochastic Differential Equations, M. L. Wells, Kamel Lahouel, Bruno Jedynak

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications and Presentations

We present a novel kernel-based method for learning multivariate stochastic differential equations (SDEs). The method follows a two-step procedure: we first estimate the drift term function, then the (matrix-valued) diffusion function given the drift. Occupation kernels are integral functionals on a reproducing kernel Hilbert space (RKHS) that aggregate information over a trajectory. Our approach leverages vector-valued occupation kernels for estimating the drift component of the stochastic process. For diffusion estimation, we extend this framework by introducing operator-valued occupation kernels, enabling the estimation of an auxiliary matrix-valued function as a positive semi-definite operator, from which we readily derive the diffusion estimate. …

Optical Coherence Tomography Harmonization With Anatomy-Guided Latent Metric Schrödinger Bridges, Shuwen Wei, Blake E. Dewey, Samuel W. Remedios, Bruno Jedynak, Shimeng Wang, Peter Calabresi, Shiv Saidha, Aaron Carass, Multiple Additional Authors Jan 2025

Optical Coherence Tomography Harmonization With Anatomy-Guided Latent Metric Schrödinger Bridges, Shuwen Wei, Blake E. Dewey, Samuel W. Remedios, Bruno Jedynak, Shimeng Wang, Peter Calabresi, Shiv Saidha, Aaron Carass, Multiple Additional Authors

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications and Presentations

Medical image harmonization aims to reduce the differences in appearance caused by scanner hardware variations to allow for consistent and reliable comparisons across devices. Harmonization based on paired images from different devices has limited applicability in real-world clinical settings. On the other hand, unpaired harmonization typically does not guarantee anatomy consistency, which is problematic because anatomical information preservation is paramount. The Schrödinger bridge framework has achieved state-of-the-art style transfer performance with natural images by matching distributions of unpaired images, but this approach can also introduce anatomy changes when applied to medical images. We show that such changes occur because the …

The Nature Of The Interplay Of Classical And Biblical Intertexts In Milton's Poetry, Timothy Windsor Jan 2025

The Nature Of The Interplay Of Classical And Biblical Intertexts In Milton's Poetry, Timothy Windsor

School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences Theses

Catabasis, the hero’s descent and return from the underworld, was the supreme heroic feat in classical myth and literature because it represented the accomplishment of the impossible: the conquest of death. Two out of three of the great ancient epics, Homer’s Odyssey and Virgil’s Aeneid, therefore, set the catabasis at the centre of the poem to mark its distinction. Previous scholarship has argued that Milton removed catabasis from the centre to outlying sections of Paradise Lost. My published work charts a new path in Milton studies, arguing that, by accommodating the action of his War in Heaven …

‘It’S Just So Much Work For Our Little Hands’: Exploring The Multi-Dimensionality Of Pre-School Children’S Lived Experience In Shaping Expressions And Perceptions Of Learning., Sasha Tregenza

School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences Theses

This thesis creatively explores the multi-dimensionality of pre-school children's lived experience in shaping expressions and perceptions of learning within Early Childhood Education and Care (ECEC). Concepts of ECEC practice within England continue to be shaped by the lasting legacies of those regarded as early years ‘pioneers’, alongside theories of child development and an ever-increasing influence of governmental legislation and policy. Pioneers and policy combined, has led to growing emphasis upon school readiness and performativity culture, resulting in repeated and often unchallenged pedagogy within ECEC. This qualitative study draws upon aspects of facet methodology as a research orientation, to disrupt existing …

Assessing The Relationship Between Perceived Psychological And Physical Pain In Adults With Orthopedic Pain, Daniel C. Karimi Dehkordi Jan 2025

Assessing The Relationship Between Perceived Psychological And Physical Pain In Adults With Orthopedic Pain, Daniel C. Karimi Dehkordi

Honors Undergraduate Theses

Suicide remains a public health concern in the U.S., particularly among individuals experiencing chronic pain and psychological distress. This cross-sectional study investigated the relationship between perceived physical and psychological pain in 41 adults with chronic orthopedic conditions. The relationship between other risk and protective factors and perceived levels of pain distress was also examined. Results showed a significant positive correlation between psychological distress and physical pain (r(39) = 0.388, p < .05) and psychological distress and depressive/anxiety symptoms (r (39) = 0.477, p < .01). Psychological distress was moderately associated with feelings of hopelessness (r (39) = 0.403, p < .01), however, the relationship between physical pain and hopelessness was weak and nonsignificant (r (39) = -0.06, p = .71). Contrary to expectations, emotional support did not buffer the effects of psychological distress (r (39) = 0.07, p = 0.66). Mediational analysis confirmed that emotional support did not influence the relationship between physical pain and psychological distress (Beta (β) = -0.969, p = 0.572; Sobel Z = 0.5598, p = 0.575). Age was not correlated with psychological distress (r (39) = -0.24, p = 0.13) or mental health symptoms (r (39) = -0.05, p = .77). While there was no significant difference across sex, males reported higher mental health symptomatology and psychological distress scores than female counterparts. These findings underscore the direct impact of physical pain on psychological distress and challenge assumptions about the protective role of social support. The study highlights the need for integrated, multidisciplinary interventions targeting both physical and psychological pain to mitigate suicide risk among individuals with chronic orthopedic conditions. Future research should iii explore alternative support mechanisms and resilience-building strategies to address the complex interplay of pain, distress, and suicidality.

Physical Activity And Hypertension Outcomes Around Menopause In Adult Women—A Secondary Analysis Of The All Of Us Research Program, Meriam F. Naguib

Honors Undergraduate Theses

Hypertension significantly impacts menopausal women due to a decrease in estrogen levels. That is due to estrogen level changes, causing many metabolic alterations, one of which is increased vascular resistance, leading to hypertension. Advanced treatments are made available to help alleviate the condition; however, lifestyle modifications—especially physical activity—show a critical role in hypertension control. This thesis explored the effect of physical activity as a non-pharmacological, lifestyle intervention on hypertension in women by menopausal status (pre-, peri-, and post-menopausal). This study used a secondary analysis with a retrospective design. Physical activity was defined using the American Heart Association's (AHA) guidelines (i.e., …
