African American women (AAW) experience disproportionately high rates of obesity and chronic disease compared to all other demographic groups in the United States. The purpose of this basic qualitative study was to explore the experiences of AAW aged 36–64 residing in Nashville, Tennessee, regarding food, weight management, and chronic disease management. The social-ecological model (SEM) served as the theoretical framework, providing a multilevel lens through which individual, interpersonal, organizational, community, and societal factors are examined. Pediatric osteopetrosis presents a significant technical challenge for fracture fixation due to the bone's dense yet brittle nature and frequently absent medullary canal. Traditional drilling methods risk excessive torque, drill-bit breakage, and iatrogenic fractures. Here, we describe a serial drilling technique for plate-and-screw fixation in a 5-year-old child with osteopetrosis who sustained sequential subtrochanteric femur fractures 8 months apart. By creating a small pilot hole, sequentially enlarging it with intermediate bits under copious irrigation, and inserting locking screws manually, we achieved stable fixation with no observed instrument failure or intraoperative complications. Proteins contain small pockets that form due to imperfections in residue packing or the rotational and conformational movement of amino acids. In this work, we used the fluorescent probe 1-aminoanthracene (AMA) to detect a small ligand pocket in the hydrophobic core of human proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA), which is a critical protein for DNA replication and repair. Fluorescence measurements of AMA reported that the core of PCNA had a dielectric constant (ε) of 4, which was very apolar and similar to cyclohexane (ε = 2). BACKGROUND: Participation in the cardiac catheterization laboratory is a requirement of cardiology fellowship training. We sought to determine whether trainee presence is associated with outcomes during pediatric and congenital cardiac catheterization.

METHODS: We identified catheterizations between January 2011 and September 2020 within the IMPACT (Improving Pediatric and Adult Congenital Treatment) Registry. Multivariable multilevel regression was used to determine the association between trainee presence and procedural outcomes.

RESULTS: Of 122 760 catheterizations at 107 academic hospitals, a trainee was present in 71 651 (58.4%) cases. Rates of major adverse events were similar between trainee and nontrainee cases (9.0% versus 8.0%). Contrast …

BACKGROUND: Fetal and neonatal outcomes and factors increasing mortality risk in fetal truncus arteriosus are not well characterized. Despite the increased risk of invasive pneumococcal disease among pediatric hematopoietic cell transplant (HCT) recipients, pneumococcal colonization has not been evaluated in this population. We prospectively assessed longitudinal pneumococcal colonization in 22 pediatric HCT recipients from conditioning therapy to 100 days post-HCT. A higher likelihood of pneumococcal colonization was observed in the late post-HCT period (weeks 9-14) compared with the early post-HCT period (weeks 1-8), with odds increasing with each additional week after conditioning.IMPORTANCEThis is the first study to longitudinally evaluate pneumococcal colonization in pediatric hematopoietic cell transplant (HCT) recipients from the onset of conditioning therapy to 100 days post-HCT. …

BACKGROUND: Mitochondrial dysfunction and oxidative stress are central to the pathogenesis of Parkinson's disease (PD), particularly affecting substantia nigra pars compacta (SNc) dopamine (DA) neurons. Here, we investigate how the R1441G mutation in leucine-rich repeat kinase 2 (LRRK2), a key genetic contributor to familial and sporadic PD, impacts mitochondrial function in midbrain DA neurons.

METHODS: We employed a BAC transgenic mouse model overexpressing human LRRK2-R1441G (BAC-hR1441G) and crossed it with TH-mito-roGFP mice to enable mitochondria-targeted redox imaging specifically in DA neurons. Problem: Pediatric surgical procedures are associated with preoperative anxiety. Preoperative anxiety is associated with higher postoperative pain. Multiple studies have found that decreasing preoperative anxiety using Virtual Reality (VR) Intervention also decreases postoperative pain scores and use of rescue analgesics in postoperative care units (PACU). However, there is no standardized protocol for use of VR interventions and in our institution, VR was not utilized at all.

Background: Sleep disturbances affect the quality of sleep hospitalized adults experience, possibly extending patient recovery time. Treatment of insomnia frequently includes pharmacological interventions exposing patients to potential side effects, leading to negative patient outcomes.  The purpose of this project was to determine if a sleep hygiene toolkit including eye masks, earplugs, advocacy cards, and removal of nicotine patches at bedtime would improve patient sleep quality without use of pharmacological interventions.

Loneliness and social isolation significantly impact the physical and mental well-being of older adults. This quality improvement project implemented an eight-week social intervention designed to reduce loneliness and enhance well-being through weekly sessions incorporating mindfulness exercises, gratitude journaling, and structured socialization activities. The intervention was delivered by nursing students to a sample of residents in a Midwestern independent living community. While most standardized measures of loneliness and mood did not show statistically significant changes, the project resulted in a statistically significant increase in social network engagement as measured by the Lubben Social Network Scale-6 (LSNS-6). Objective: This study examined the efficacy of the cognitive restructuring health education (CRHE) intervention in improving participatory learning in sexual and reproductive health classes among students at a Nigerian public university.

Methods: The study employed a randomized pretest/posttest control group design involving 130 undergraduates from Federal University Oye-Ekiti, Nigeria. Participants were randomly assigned to either a 2-week intensive health education–based cognitive restructuring program (n = 65) or a waitlist control group (n = 65). Background: Chronic limb-threatening ischemia (CLTI) caused by infrapopliteal disease is a major therapeutic challenge, with percutaneous transluminal angioplasty (PTA) associated with high rates of restenosis and reintervention. The LIFE-BTK trial previously demonstrated superior efficacy of the Esprit (Abbott Vascular) BTK drug-eluting resorbable scaffold (DRS) over PTA at 1 year, with sustained benefits at 2 years, with comparable safety at both time points. As the population of English learners in the United States grew, there was a greater need for linguistically and developmentally appropriate instructional approaches for young learners. The question that guided this research on appropriate instructional approaches was: How does developmental play support the acquisition of academic vocabulary among early-emergent multilingual students in kindergarten and first grade? The research review examined peer-reviewed research across three interconnected bodies of literature: play-based learning, interactions in developmental play, and vocabulary instruction. The findings indicated that purposeful, guided play strengthened executive function, expressive language, and academic growth. The court dismissed because landlord's execution of a new agreement after service of the predicate notice vitiated the Notice to Quit, rendering it a nullity. A landlord who renews an occupancy agreement after service of a termination notice cannot thereafter rely upon the prior notice as the basis for a summary proceeding.

Background: While the ProtecT randomized trial demonstrated comparable oncologic outcomes between radical prostatectomy (RP) and radiation therapy (RT) for localized prostate cancer, several retrospective studies have reported mixed findings. In this study, we investigated whether non-randomized studies tend to favor RP or RT and assessed whether the specialty of leading authors-urologists or radiation oncologists-correlates with study conclusions.

Methods: We identified non-randomized clinical studies published between 1993 and 2024 that compared RP and RT for localized prostate cancer and reported oncologic outcomes including biochemical, metastasis, and/or survival outcomes.
