Research & Publications

Ransomware and other malware inflict devastating financial and operational damage on organizations worldwide by exploiting deeply embedded, hard-to-detect vulnerabilities in their systems. Detecting these vulnerabilities in compiled code before malicious actors exploit them remains a critical challenge in cybersecurity. This research introduces TEDVIL (Transformer-based Embeddings for Discovering Vulnerabilities in Lifted Code), a novel framework which uses transformer-based embeddings to train neural networks to detect vulnerabilities in lifted code. The framework was implemented using bidirectional (BERT and RoBERTa) and unidirectional (GPT-1 and GPT-2) transformer-based models to generate embeddings for training Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) neural networks to detect stack-based buffer overflows …

Background and Context: Integrating computer science (CS) and math in classrooms is an increasingly recognized way for schools to address national CS mandates. There is a need to understand how professional development (PD) can support teachers to integrate. Objective: We examined math teachers’ interest, and confidence, in math, CS, and student learning, in relation to their participation in professional development (PD) designed to support them to integrate CS with math in their classrooms. Method: We used mixed-methods to study participants in entry-level hybrid PD, and a sub-group of those participants who took the workshop a second time. Findings: Results showed …

This Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) project explores the impact of implementing a Virtual Discharge Nurse (VDN) on patient length of stay (LOS) and discharge timing at Paoli Hospital within the Main Line Health system. Hospital discharges are often complex and can negatively impact patient flow and outcomes. This study highlights the urgent need for innovative discharge practices in healthcare and supports the potential benefits of integrating technology into nursing roles to improve patient care and operational efficiency. Muscle ultrasound has high utility in clinical practice and research; however, the main challenges are the training and time required for manual analysis to achieve objective quantification of muscle size and quality. We aimed to develop and validate a software tool powered by artificial intelligence (AI) by measuring its consistency and comparability of expert manual analysis quantifying lower limb muscle ultrasound images. Quadriceps complex (QC) and tibialis anterior (TA) muscle images of healthy, intensive care unit, and/or lung cancer participants were captured with portable devices. Listeners use knowledge acquired from experiences to weight phonetic-level cues to phonological contrasts. Phonetic knowledge is imbued with expectations about the contexts in which cues covary, speakers of a variety, and identity categories or constructs, so it can be challenging to distinguish expectations about variation from expectations about speakers. This study aims to explore the extent that expectations about iconic vowel quality variation in Southern American Englishes can drive cue-weighting. Listeners categorized stimuli with vowel qualities synthesized from an [ɛ]-[eɪ] continuum from a Southern and a non-Southern talker, with duration manipulated in tandem. There is a worldwide epidemic of obesity and metabolic dysfunction. The root cause of obesity is driven by a positive energy balance, which is a consequence of increased caloric intake and decreased energy expenditure. Energy intake is the more dominant force, as increasing energy expenditure is a time-consuming and labor-intensive process. The caloric surplus can be mainly accounted for by increased consumption of high-fat and high-sugar diets. While the risks associated with fat consumption are well-documented, the impact of sugar intake is less understood.

Frequently, alterations in the composition of the gut microbiota and its metabolites are linked with intestinal diseases, including inflammatory bowel disease and colorectal cancer. However, the direct connections between alterations in the microbiome and disease states often remain elusive. Prior research has identified increases in both polyamines, which are a class of microbial metabolite, and in the abundance of bacteria that can produce polyamines, in a murine colorectal cancer model. Position Statement: The International Society of Sports Nutrition (ISSN) presents this position based on a critical examination of the literature surrounding the effects of long-chain omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid (ω-3 PUFA) supplementation on exercise performance, recovery, and brain health. This position stand is intended to provide a scientific foundation for athletes, dietitians, trainers, and other practitioners regarding the effects of supplemental ω-3 PUFA in healthy and athletic populations. The following conclusions represent the official position of the ISSN: Athletes may be at a higher risk for ω-3 PUFA insufficiency. There are few Supreme Court cases that enjoy as much widespread support as the unanimous decision in United States v. Nixon. The recent pitched battles between Congress and the executive branch have made apparent the vast disagreement between the two branches over access to information. But that disagreement does not extend to Nixon, the unquestioned jurisprudential foundation for the doctrine of executive privilege. Closer inspection shows, however, that this foundation is not a stable one, but one constructed from unnecessary, ill-considered dicta.
