Background: Childhood emotional abuse, while frequently co-occurring with other types of abuse, is often neglected within the trauma literature, but has been found to be an important independent predictor of adult psychopathology. Shame represents a potentially important and malleable factor that may contribute to the development and maintenance of poor psychological outcomes. As such, interventions focused on increasing self-compassion have been identified as promising methods to decrease experiences of shame, and ultimately symptoms of psychopathology. The Rohingya’s statelessness is a result of their systematic exclusion from protection mechanisms and citizenship rights. The Burmese government and the majority Buddhist population have marginalized and discriminated against the Rohingya, deeply impacting identity politics among the Rohingya. Due to their lack of a national identity document in Myanmar, the Rohingya are easy targets for discrimination and violence. The fact that they are not considered full citizens has also made it hard for them to receive essential support. This thesis presents the in vitro evaluation of a novel near-infrared (NIR) fluorescent small-molecule probe AB-139 that selectively binds to epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) kinase and operates through a turn-on fluorescence mechanism. The sensor addresses several limitations associated with conventional protein-based probes by offering small-molecule specificity, tunable modularity, deep-tissue imaging potential, and reduced background noise. As a proof of concept, we focus on oligonucleotide targets. Research has revealed that cultural immersion can increase multicultural counseling competencies in counselors-in-training (Barden & Cashwell, 2014; Barden et al., 2015; Choi & Protivnak, 2016; Dietz & Baker, 2019; Gaia, 2015; Wathen & Kleist, 2015). In light of the increasing diversity within the counseling profession and cultural competency continuing education requirements, the examination of cultural immersion as a means of shaping counselors' cultural competence is both justified and imperative. By utilizing interpretive phenomenological analysis, five participants were interviewed to better understand professional counselors’ perceptions of their multicultural counseling competencies following cultural immersion. Over the past 50 years, the U.S. financed a massive physical and fiscal expansion of prisons via the municipal bond market—with devastating results. This project is the first to shine a light on the role of municipal debt in state-level carceral decision making, spotlighting the ways that the municipal bond market affects states’ capacities to incarcerate.

This Article argues that the two primary controls of states’ use of the carceral bond market—(1) market discipline and (2) states’ fiscal constitutions—are particularly ineffective at limiting states’ spending on prisons. Anaplastic lymphoma kinase (ALK)-positive anaplastic large-cell lymphoma (ALCL) accounts for >95% of ALCL cases in children and adolescents. The first description of ALCL as a CD30-positive lymphoma in 1985 was followed by the detection of chromosomal translocations involving the ALK gene at chromosome 2p23. The pathogenesis of ALK-positive ALCL is based on signalling from the constitutive active ALK kinase. The clinical characteristics, therapy regimens and outcome data were reported in the 1990s and 2000s. Different chemotherapy regimens led to astonishingly similar long-term event-free survival rates of 70%, independent of the drugs, doses and duration of therapy. This study examines how social capital influences older adults’ preferences for aging in the community, focusing on Yuexiu District, Guangzhou. Using a mixed-methods approach, the study explores family, structural, and cognitive dimensions of social capital.

Quantitative data were collected through 439 surveys, with 400 valid responses from adults aged 60 and above. Regression analysis identified key predictors of aging-in-community preferences, including family financial support, care commitment, activities with grandchildren, community trust, mutual help, and service satisfaction.

This project’s fourth concept paper rethinks public participation in administrative processes. Although participation mechanisms are theoretically designed to enable those affected by regulations to influence their development, it is often extremely difficult for members of the public to meaningfully engage with agencies. After discussing institutional failures of current participation mechanisms, this report develops a set of principles to guide the redesign of public participation mechanisms. These include involving publics earlier in the process, building both public and regulatory capacity for meaningful, two-way communication, and reframing expertise as a public good.

It outlines a set of foundational principles for a dynamic, effective regulatory toolkit that empowers regulators to act sooner, experiment, create governance seams, mandate beneficial friction, and extend regulatory authority in ways that mirror the scale and interdependence of digital supply chains.

Chick sexing, the process of determining the gender of day-old chicks, is a critical task in the poultry industry due to the distinct roles that each gender plays in production. While effective traditional methods achieve high accuracy, color, and wing feather sexing is exclusive to specific breeds, and vent sexing is invasive and requires trained experts. To address these challenges, we propose a novel approach inspired by facial gender classification techniques in humans: facial chick sexing. Arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) are abnormal vascular connections bypassing the capillary system, categorized as acquired or congenital. Acquired uterine AVMs, often resulting from uterine trauma due to procedures like dilatation and curettage, can be life threatening, necessitating prompt diagnosis and management. Here we present a 34-year-old woman with a history of missed abortion and dilatation and curettage presenting with abnormal uterine bleeding 2 months postprocedure. Although initial transvaginal ultrasound suggested retained products of conception, several modalities were required to accurately diagnose uterine AVM with invasive angiography revealing the culprit vessel. Introduction: Prior work in predominantly European ancestry populations has explained how the risk associated with demographic, lifestyle, and health factors differs with underlying genetic susceptibility to type 2 diabetes (T2D), but less is known about these relationships in Black Americans.

Methods: We used covariate-adjusted logistic regression models of T2D to examine interactions between a published trans-ancestry derived T2D polygenic risk score (PRS) and various demographic, lifestyle, and health-related factors among 28,251 self-identified Black Americans from six cohort studies.

This study explores the synthesis, characterization, and therapeutic efficacy of AGY1, AGY2, AGY3, AGY4, and AGY5, which are novel 5-FU analogs designed to improve metabolic stability, prolong half-life, and anti-tumor activity against pancreatic cancer. The 5-FU molecule was chemically modified to bypass dihydropyrimidine dehydrogenase (DPD)-mediated inactivation, enhancing drug retention and increasing lipophilicity for improved cellular uptake. The analog cytotoxic activity was evaluated in 2D monolayer cultures and 3D pancreatic cancer spheroids and organoid models derived from MiaPaCa-2 and PANC-1 cells to simulate a more complex tumor environment. Introduction: Invasive candidiasis is a common healthcare-associated infection with significant morbidity and mortality. Candida auris in particular has emerged as a problematic and challenging healthcare-associated infection, especially with regards to infections involving left ventricular assist devices (LVADs). There is a paucity of evidence on the best management of these particular types of infections. Rezafungin is a newly-approved echinocandin and an important new tool in the management of invasive candidiasis. Brain macrophages encompass two major populations: microglia in the parenchyma and border-associated macrophages (BAMs) in the extra-parenchymal compartments. These cells play crucial roles in maintaining brain homeostasis and immune surveillance. Microglia and BAMs are phenotypically and epigenetically distinct and exhibit highly specialized functions tailored to their environmental niches. Intriguingly, recent studies have shown that both microglia and BAMs originate from the same myeloid progenitor during yolk sac hematopoiesis, but their developmental fates diverge within the brain. This study analyzes landfalling Tropical Cyclones (TCs) in Vietnam (1979–2020) using k-means clustering. Two clusters were identified based on dissipation locations: Cluster I with 36 cases and Cluster II with 69 cases. The two clusters show distinct environmental characteristics. Differences in sea surface temperature, sea level pressure, and vertical wind shear influence whether TCs tend to move northward or southward. The westward extension of the western North Pacific Subtropical High near southern China appears to delay TC recurvature, increasing the likelihood of landfall in Vietnam.
