In the past fifty years, the United States has seen significant changes in both the criminal legal system and the welfare state. The incarceration rate surged by 475% from 1972 to 2007, driven by state-level decisions about criminal legal policy and disproportionately affecting Black Americans. Simultaneously, welfare programs became less generous, especially for those deemed “undeserving.” A long line of social science scholarship emphasizes that these two major social institutions—the welfare state and the carceral state—must be considered as complementary and alternative methods of managing marginalized groups. My dissertation investigates the role of social relationships in newcomer socialization within organizations, emphasizing the importance of extra-role conversations in building affective trust and facilitating integration. I hypothesize that while attention to work-related tasks is crucial, engaging in extra-role conversations with supervisors and co-workers fosters affective trust, a key factor in socialization. I integrate social exchange theory, proposing that attention acts as a socioemotional resource exchanged in social interactions, leading to stronger affective trust and ultimately socialization outcomes. Research on the motivations behind mass shootings remains inconclusive as these events often lack a singular or explicit cause. The motivations of mass shooters are complex, shaped by the interplay of psychological, social, and ideological factors. Age-of-acquisition (AoA) effects, the processing advantage for words learned early in life, are well-documented across various tasks. While various theories attempt to explain these effects, the underlying mechanisms remain debated. This dissertation examined the role of orthographic processing in AoA effects through three experiments emphasizing orthographic rather than semantic processing. In Experiment 1, participants completed an eye-tracking and proofreading task to detect spelling errors in sentences containing early- versus late-acquired words, followed by a spelling dictation task to assess individual differences in spelling ability. This dissertation examines age-based differences in college readiness by comparing newly enrolled adult undergraduates (age 24 and older) with traditional-age undergraduates at two public institutions: a large online university serving primarily working adults and a residential research university serving primarily younger students. The study uses secondary data from 5,447 incoming students who completed the Diagnostic Assessment and Achievement of College Skills (DAACS) Reading and Mathematics assessments between May 2022 and May 2023. The primary goal was to test whether adult and traditional-age students differ in reading and mathematics readiness after adjusting for background characteristics.

Does formative assessment (FA) promote self-regulated learning (SRL)? Theoretically, FA has long been believed to facilitate SRL due to their overlapping conceptual frameworks, yet empirical evidence has remained scattered and inconclusive. This study presents the first comprehensive, large-scale meta-analysis to examine whether, to what extent, for whom, and under what conditions FA enhances SRL.

Following a preregistered, PRISMA-guided protocol, we systematically searched the literature from 1998 to 2024 and synthesized 999 effect sizes from 138 studies (n = 23,293 students) using multilevel meta-analytic models that accounted for dependent effects. Glyphosate, the most extensively used herbicide worldwide, has become a ubiquitous environmental contaminant. Although initially considered safe due to its specific biochemical target in plants, emerging evidence suggests that chronic, low-level human exposure may disrupt metabolic processes. Simultaneously, the global rise in metabolic disorders such as metabolic syndrome (MetS), obesity, and type 2 diabetes, has created a pressing need to identify novel, potentially modifiable environmental contributors. Objective

To assess how patient and caregiver factors influence caregiver readiness for hospital discharge in palliative care patients.

Study Setting and Design

This transitional care study uses cross-sectional data from a randomized controlled trial conducted from 2018 to 2023 testing an intervention for caregivers of hospitalized adult patients with a serious or life-limiting illness who received a palliative care consult prior to transitioning out of the hospital.

Though overrepresented in sex work communities, transgender and gender diverse (TGD) individuals are underrepresented in sex work literature. Parents of preterm infants experience stress related to uncertainty which impacts parent health outcomes. Less is known about the experience of parents whose infants are admitted for reasons other than prematurity. In this study we sought to describe (1) the experience of parents whose infants are admitted to a level IV NICU for reasons unrelated to prematurity in relation to uncertainty and (2) the effect of social and structural determinants on parent experience with uncertainty.

Background

Critical care advanced practice providers (APPs) are frontline providers in many pediatric intensive care units (PICUs). From 2020 to 2022, there was a significant downward shift in nursing experience level in the PICU at the authors’ institution. APPs may help provide additional in situ education.

Methods

Data were collected using role-specific needs assessment of PICU nursing staff and providers, assessing concept related to knowledge and job stress.

Results

This paper examines dance not as a strategic tool for persuasion or visibility, but as an inherently meaningful political practice that shapes how protest is experienced, sustained, and lived by participants. Drawing on global dance-protests, from feminist protests in India to anti-ICE protests in the United States, it demonstrates that dance emerges across conditions of celebration and mourning, safety and repression, and hope and despair.

Sticky Valuations, Systemic Risks: Quantifying The Denominator Effect Of Private Equity Holdings In U.S. Public Pensions, Rutvij Thakkar

U.S. public pension systems have increasingly adopted the "Yale Model," shifting assets under management into private equity to capture excess returns. However, the valuation asymmetry between marked-to-market public equities and smoothed private net asset values creates a mechanical denominator effect during market downturns. This thesis quantifies this passive allocation drift using a fixed-effects panel regression of 2,706 observations from 182 U.S. public pension plans between 2005 and 2024. I find that a 10 percentage point decline in public equity returns mechanically increases private equity allocation by 50.5 basis points, an effect that amplifies to 55 basis points during systemic crises. …

Parents of autistic preschoolers often report high levels of stress that spill over into daily parenting. Mindfulness is promoted in clinical settings as a protective factor, yet its real-world role for stressed caregivers remains unclear. We used baseline data from 112 caregivers of autistic preschoolers participating in a stress-reduction clinical trial to examine whether trait mindfulness alters the link between parenting stress and parenting behavior. Parents reported on their own parenting stress, trait mindfulness, and parenting behavior as part of a broader pre-intervention assessment. Under the ice of ponds and lakes, goldfish (Carassius auratus) can survive weeks of anoxia at low temperatures by conserving ATP and by reducing their metabolic rate and relying on liver glycogen stores to meet their ATP demands using glycolysis. The following period of re-oxygenation is also known to be damaging in most vertebrates because it can lead to the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) that can cause oxidative damage to lipids, proteins and nucleic acids. People have biases to prioritize some kinds of information over other. This is, in part, determined by individual differences in cognitive abilities. The authors describe an initiative between an urban public school district, a city college, and a college of education to establish a pipeline of teachers of color from and for the school district. The qualitative research occurred during the teacher candidates’ participation in a community immersion program. Centering the teacher candidates’ experiences and reactions to the community immersion highlights their identity, commitment to teaching, and the importance of exposing homegrown teachers to communities beyond their own. The authors discuss community-based curriculum in the preparation of teachers and consider how the experiences of teacher candidates of color impact program implementation.

This qualitative exploratory study examines the experiences of induction teachers participating in induction programs throughout Georgia’s Title I elementary schools. Grounded in semi-structured interviews and document analysis, the research investigated how induction programs address educators' unique challenges in high-need settings. Key findings highlight the importance of intentional mentor pairing, scaffolded support structures, and the inclusion of reflective practices to foster professional growth and teacher retention.
