Childhood Betrayal Trauma And Suicidal Ideation: The Role Of Early Maladaptive Schemas And Interpersonal Problems, Christine Yost
Childhood Betrayal Trauma And Suicidal Ideation: The Role Of Early Maladaptive Schemas And Interpersonal Problems, Christine Yost
Dissertations and Theses
Betrayal trauma (Freyd, 1996) is a specific form of trauma that occurs when a child is significantly harmed by someone they depend on or trust. Prior research has demonstrated that betrayal trauma is more strongly associated with adverse mental health outcomes than traumas lower in interpersonal betrayal, yet few studies have examined its relationship with suicidal ideation or identified mechanisms that explain this association. The present study tested a path model in a sample of 391 young adults aged 18-34 who endorsed suicidal ideation in the past year. The model examined whether specific early maladaptive schemas (emotional deprivation, social isolation/alienation, …
Comparative Analysis Of Estimation Techniques On Human Performance In Seek-And-Place Tasking, Adam J. Wehr
Comparative Analysis Of Estimation Techniques On Human Performance In Seek-And-Place Tasking, Adam J. Wehr
Graduate Thesis and Dissertation post-2024
Accurate parameter estimation is fundamental to statistical modeling, shaping the validity of inference, prediction, and decision-making. Although Maximum Likelihood Estimation (MLE) and Bayesian methods are well established theoretically, their performance relative to alternative estimators in small-sample, skewed-data contexts remains less clear. This thesis addresses this gap through a systematic evaluation of estimation techniques applied to human response time data from a controlled seek-and-place jigsaw puzzle task, where distributions are characteristically right-skewed.
A performance-modified lognormal model was developed to capture the relationship between task complexity and response times. Four estimation approaches were investigated: MLE, Method of Moments (MoM), Bayesian estimation under …
Least Squares Support Vector Data Description With Adaptive Optimizers, Daniel Markwei
Least Squares Support Vector Data Description With Adaptive Optimizers, Daniel Markwei
Graduate Thesis and Dissertation post-2024
One-class classification has emerged as a powerful technique for data description, enabling a model to learn exclusively from data belonging to a single (target) class. By focusing solely on patterns within this class, this classification procedure is implemented in order to successfully assess whether incoming input deviates or is part of the target group. This approach develops a sophisticated understanding of the defining characteristics of the target data in relation to other groups. Consequently, any data point that deviates from the target group is flagged as an anomaly because it diverges from the learned distribution. One way to explore the …
Fast Differentiable Projection Layers Onto High-Dimensional Polytopes For Large-Scale Predictive Modeling, Camilo Gomez
Fast Differentiable Projection Layers Onto High-Dimensional Polytopes For Large-Scale Predictive Modeling, Camilo Gomez
Graduate Thesis and Dissertation post-2024
Recent trends in statistical machine learning have revealed the power of integrating optimization procedures as first-class components within end-to-end large-scale predictive systems. These structured computations—often formulated as projections onto geometric objects like polytopes—enable models to inject domain-specific inductive biases and enforce desirable properties in the learned representations useful in downstream classification or regression tasks. This dissertation explores the role of such projections in enhancing learning performance and generalization, particularly in the context of predictive modeling with data intensive systems.
Motivated by the limitations of traditional surrogate loss functions such as logistic loss for classification or cross-entropy for multiclass problems, this …
Domain-Constrained Clustering: A Two-Stage Framework For Muscle Fiber Type Identification, Fanchao Yi
Domain-Constrained Clustering: A Two-Stage Framework For Muscle Fiber Type Identification, Fanchao Yi
Graduate Thesis and Dissertation post-2024
This dissertation introduces a novel Two-Stage Clustering Framework for the automated identification of human skeletal muscle fiber types using fluorescence microscopy image intensity data. By integrating two complementary clustering methods, this framework overcomes the subjectivity and labor-intensive nature of traditional manual methods, offering an objective and efficient solution for large-scale muscle physiology research. The initial framework combined Density Peaks Clustering (DPC) with a Gaussian Mixture Model employing a t-distribution (GMM-t). This version was validated by comparing its clustering results with manual counts at the individual subject level. We successfully applied this framework in two published studies \cite{brennan2020,hinkley2023}, demonstrating its practical …
A Unified Thermodynamic Framework For Regime Discovery, Entropy-Aware Optimization, And Emergent Leadership In Flocking Systems, Victor Nkwocha
A Unified Thermodynamic Framework For Regime Discovery, Entropy-Aware Optimization, And Emergent Leadership In Flocking Systems, Victor Nkwocha
Graduate Thesis and Dissertation post-2024
This thesis presents a unified framework for modeling, optimizing, and analyzing collective behavior in flocking systems through a thermodynamic and statistical lens. In the first study, we employ entropy-regularized Gaussian Mixture Models (GMM) to identify distinct thermodynamic regimes—ordered, transitional, and disordered—based on the energy and entropy profiles of simulated agent-based flocks. The second study introduces the Organic Adaptive Flocking Algorithm (OAFA), a biologically inspired, entropy-aware extension of the Boids model. OAFA dynamically adjusts rule weights based on local entropy signals and is optimized via a multi-objective NSGAII framework to balance cohesion, separation, energy efficiency, and disorder. Results show that entropy …
Sparse Low-Rank Tensor Logistic Regression With Applications In Neuroimaging, Michael Hurtado
Sparse Low-Rank Tensor Logistic Regression With Applications In Neuroimaging, Michael Hurtado
Graduate Thesis and Dissertation post-2024
Discriminant analysis techniques, while extensively studied for traditional datasets, have rarely been adapted to address the complexities of high-dimensional tensor data. Recent advances in tensor decomposition, as reviewed by Burch et al. (2025), highlight methods such as CP, Tucker, HOSVD, and t-SVD, which offer robust frameworks for handling multi-dimensional biomedical data, including neuroimaging. In this paper, we propose a novel approach that integrates low-rank regularization techniques with tensor structures to tackle high-dimensional matrix and tensor data. Building on the Multi-Projection Optimal Scoring Discriminant Analysis (ROSDA) method by Huang & Zhang (2020), which employs multi-directional projection pursuit for robust classification, our …
Clustering And Classification Methods For Forensic Science Applications, Slun Booppasiri
Clustering And Classification Methods For Forensic Science Applications, Slun Booppasiri
Graduate Thesis and Dissertation post-2024
Finite mixture models have been widely used to cluster data consisting of homogeneous subpopulations. In forensic palynology, pollen is used as a proxy to link individuals or items to a crime scene. Mixtures of pollen data-including willow and mustard and blank samples-were analyzed using flow cytometry. Willow and mustard clusters tend to have multivariate normal distributions, while a background cluster has multivariate non-normal distribution. We propose a finite mixture model capable of handling the mixtures of pollen in terms of univariate and multivariate distribution. The proposed methods are applied in simulated and mixture of pollen datasets.
Finite mixture models typically …
Robust Multiple Change Point Detection For Streaming Data, Randyll Pandohie
Robust Multiple Change Point Detection For Streaming Data, Randyll Pandohie
Graduate Thesis and Dissertation post-2024
The growing prevalence of high-frequency, high-dimensional data streams in domains such as finance, cybersecurity, and industrial monitoring has intensified the demand for real-time multiple change point detection methods. These methods are expected to identify distributional shifts as they occur while also determining the number and locations of change points—even in the presence of noise, outliers, and limited labeled data. Traditional batch-based approaches and many existing machine learning models fall short in streaming contexts due to their reliance on static datasets and sensitivity to contamination.
This thesis proposes a unified framework for robust multiple change point detection in streaming environments. The …
‘‘I Am Not This, Not Here, This Time’’: Claudia Emerson’S Infusion Suite As A Compelling Account Of The Lived Experience Of Cancer, Chris Foss
English & Linguistics Articles
Claudia Emerson’s Infusion Suite section within her poetry collection Impossible Bottle is a significant contemporary literary representation of cancer. In this twelve-poem sequence, Emerson dispenses with the typical martial metaphors so often used to represent this lived experience. Instead, she focuses on more mundane everyday moments in a way that acknowledges and respects the humanity of all those at the treatment center—especially that of the patients. Emerson refuses to airbrush out the daunting, debilitating aspects of cancer, but she also preserves space for light and life.
Exploring Adaptive University President Narratives To Generate Growth And Sustainability, Ryan Charles Weber
Exploring Adaptive University President Narratives To Generate Growth And Sustainability, Ryan Charles Weber
Theses and Dissertations
This mixed-methods study explores how university presidents leverage adaptive leadership principles and learning organization frameworks to generate institutional growth and sustainability in higher education. Through analysis of presidential narratives, the research examines the intersection of Heifetz et al.’s (2009) adaptive leadership theory and Senge’s (2006) five disciplines of learning organizations, revealing patterns in leadership communication that drive change. The study analyzed narratives from eight university presidents who demonstrated success through their institutions’ minimum 30% endowment growth over five years. Using thematic analysis and frequency counts, the research identified 198 references to learning organization disciplines, 90 adaptive leadership phases, and 100 …
Emergent Leadership: A Study Of Ethiopian And Eritrean Diaspora Leaders, Bethel Zelalem
Emergent Leadership: A Study Of Ethiopian And Eritrean Diaspora Leaders, Bethel Zelalem
Theses and Dissertations
This study explores the lived experiences of young Ethiopian and Eritrean diaspora leaders in the United States who have been recognized by others as embodying emergent leadership. The research was inspired by the firsthand observations of a gap in leadership representation and recognition among first- and second-generation East African diaspora young adults, particularly those navigating bicultural identities and intergenerational tension. Guided by Borderland Theory (Anzaldúa, 1987) and Emergent Leadership Theory (Bormann, 1972; Mumford et al., 2002), the study explored how young adult Ethiopian and Eritrean diaspora members in the United States, nominated as embodying emergent leadership by their communities, experience …

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications
SNOMED CT is extensively employed to standardize data across diverse patient datasets and support cohort identification, with studies revealing its benefits and challenges. In this work, we developed a SNOMED CT-driven cohort query system over a heterogeneous Optum® de-identified COVID-19 Electronic Health Record dataset leveraging concept mappings between ICD-9-CM/ICD-10-CM and SNOMED CT. We evaluated the benefits and challenges of using SNOMED CT to perform cohort queries based on both query code sets and actual patients retrieved from the database, leveraging the original ICD-9-CM and ICD-10-CM as baselines. Manual review of 80 random cases revealed 65 cases containing 148 true positive …
Identifying The Feasible Maximum Contaminant Level For Per- And Polyfluoroalkyl Substances That Ensures Health And Safety While Maintaining Affordability And Equity Of Drinking Water And Implementation Of That Maximum Contaminant Level Within California By The State Water Resources Control Board, Jennifer Aguilar
CGU Theses & Dissertations
Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS) are a large group of man-made substances that do not occur naturally in the environment and are resistant to heat, water, oil, grease, and stains. PFAS has been used since the 1940s in a variety of commercial products including non-stick cookware, waterproof clothing, paper products, stain-resistant fabrics and carpets, industrial firefighting foams, and products that resist grease, water, and oil. While 97% of the U.S. population has been shown to have some level of PFAS within their blood, long term exposure to PFAS is potentially harmful to health. Individuals who are exposed regularly have been …

Marked By Valor: The “Lost” History Of The 6th United States Colored Troops, Heavy Artillery, Daniel William O’Sullivan
CGU Theses & Dissertations
“Marked by Valor: The ‘Lost’ History of the 6 th U.S.C.T., Heavy Artillery,” argues that the camaraderie of having been a Black Union soldier solidified a sub-culture of Black veterans and their families in Natchez, Mississippi, that cohered throughout the Reconstruction period using the tools and the affiliations first gained in slavery and strengthened during the soldiers’ time in the army. Underlying this narrative is an interpretation of Southern history that maintains that we cannot understand the events of the postwar period—not only for Black veterans, but to some extent all freed people—if we do not understand all that came …
Cleansing Our Recycling Failures: How Guilt And Outrage Lead To Different Types Of Pro-Environmental Behavior, Cody D. Packard
Cleansing Our Recycling Failures: How Guilt And Outrage Lead To Different Types Of Pro-Environmental Behavior, Cody D. Packard
CGU Theses & Dissertations
Most Americans view recycling as “the right thing to do,” yet U.S. recycling rates lag behind other developed countries, and Americans are quick to justify why they do not recycle more (e.g., laziness, inconvenience). Recent messaging has highlighted recycling failures in the U.S., but how effective are these messages, and do they create individual behavioral changes? According to research on moral self-regulation, failing to act morally can threaten a person’s moral self-concept, eliciting moral emotions (i.e., guilt and outrage), and motivating compensatory behavior (such as increased recycling). Three studies examined whether watching a video about poor recycling in the U.S. …

Indigenous Vs Western Land Management Strategies In The Pacific Islands, Catherine Farley
Pomona Senior Theses
This paper explores the critical role of sustainable land management in the Pacific Islands, focusing on its intersection with climate change mitigation, biodiversity conservation, and cultural preservation. Indigenous land management practices, shaped over generations, are integral in maintaining ecosystem services such as carbon sequestration, soil fertility, clean water, and coastal protection. These methods not only enhance resilience to climate change but also preserve species crucial for food security and cultural practices. By comparing traditional and Western land management strategies, this research suggests ways to integrate modern technology with indigenous knowledge to improve adaptive capacity. The paper addresses the gap in …
Humans Among Giants: Urban Vitality And Implications Of Vertical Development In Hong Kong, Laura Jaramillo
Humans Among Giants: Urban Vitality And Implications Of Vertical Development In Hong Kong, Laura Jaramillo
Pomona Senior Theses
This thesis explores the complex relationship between vertical urbanism and street life, using Hong Kong as a case study to investigate how human-scale urbanism persists and adapts amidst the dominance of skyscrapers. While vertical structures symbolize modernity, economic growth, and global influence, they often overshadow the vibrancy and social connectivity that characterize ground-level spaces. This research draws on the theoretical frameworks of Jane Jacobs, David Harvey, and David Sibley to examine the interplay between vertical urbanism and street life, focusing on how spatial design impacts community engagement and cultural vibrancy. By analyzing the coexistence of modern skyscrapers and traditional street-level …

Demystifying Misconceptions In Introductory Undergraduate Chemistry Education With 3d Printed Molecular Orbitals, Hiwot Endeshaw, Daniel J. O'Leary
Pomona Senior Theses
Spatial abilities are invaluable skills for the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) subjects. However, women, people from low socioeconomic backgrounds, and ethnic minorities are more likely to have less developed spatial abilities, which is one of the many contributing factors for the lack of diversity in STEM subjects like chemistry. Teaching spatial skills to undergraduate chemistry students may address this issue and help increase the diversity of students who go on to continue their education in the subject. 3D printing technology in higher education has exploded in recent years, presenting a unique opportunity to teach “hard to grasp” concepts …

Modified N-Heterocyclic Carbene Catalysts For Polyurethane Synthesis, Charise D. Young
Pomona Senior Theses
Polyurethanes are widely used polymers synthesized from diisocyanate and diol molecules. They are ubiquitous polymeric materials with important industrial applications. Their increasing market value prompts the need for selective and efficient production which can be achieved through N-Heterocyclic carbene (NHC) catalysis. N-heterocyclic carbenes are heterocyclic molecules containing a carbene atom and at least one nitrogen adjacent to the carbene center. The nitrogen substituents on the adjacent nitrogen play an important role in influencing their steric and electronic properties and resultant reactivity.1,2 There is a lack of a comprehensive understanding of the steric and electronic properties of NHCs and how …
The New Urbanism In New York City: A Case Study Comparing Battery Park City And Alphabet City, Lena Farley
The New Urbanism In New York City: A Case Study Comparing Battery Park City And Alphabet City, Lena Farley
Pomona Senior Theses
This thesis examines two Manhattan neighborhoods, Battery Park City and Alphabet City, through the lens of New Urbanism—an urban planning approach developed in the 1990s. New Urbanist principles prioritize walkability, connectivity, mixed-use development, diversity, varied housing options, architectural quality, green transportation, sustainability, and accessible green spaces. While Battery Park City represents a top-down, master-planned New Urbanist neighborhood based on a 1979 plan, Alphabet City emerged from the 1811 Manhattan grid with significant community-driven design, notably through community gardens and grassroots initiatives. Using a mixed-methods approach including residential surveys, qualitative, and quantitative analyses, this research investigates how these neighborhoods embody New …
Optimizing And Scaling Up Tcfh–Nmi Pyrrole Acylation For Organic Syntheses, Grant H. Miller
Optimizing And Scaling Up Tcfh–Nmi Pyrrole Acylation For Organic Syntheses, Grant H. Miller
Pomona Senior Theses
Traditional ketone synthesis often depends on toxic reagents and hazardous solvents, which limits its scalability and environmental compatibility. The TCFH–NMI method has shown strong potential for amide, ester, and thioester formation, but its use in ketone synthesis has only been recently described, and only on small scales. This thesis addresses that gap by optimizing a scalable synthesis of 2-(monomethyl succinyl)-3,5-dimethylpyrrole using monomethyl succinate and 2,4-dimethylpyrrole as model substrates. Key reaction parameters were systematically refined to improve yield, reproducibility, and sustainability. The final protocol avoids chromatography, operates at room temperature, and consistently delivers high yields. These features position it as a …
The Leaf That Tapped: Literary Still Life In The Novels Of Virginia Woolf, Willa Frank
The Leaf That Tapped: Literary Still Life In The Novels Of Virginia Woolf, Willa Frank
Pomona Senior Theses
Literary still life is a vital element of Virginia Woolf’s writing which recurs in almost all of her novels. Through these passages, she attends to the object world, portrays the animation of nonhuman entities, and adapts the aesthetic movements of her time present in modernist still life to the page. In this adaptation, Woolf’s literary still life becomes defined not by its stasis but rather by the rhythm she creates through the layering of these passages, one of the gathering and releasing of stillness. In this thesis, I propose literary still life as a way of thinking about the object-focused …
Huchum: The Legacy Of Fire Suppression, Indigenous Land Management, And Media Representation, Carolyn Coyne
Huchum: The Legacy Of Fire Suppression, Indigenous Land Management, And Media Representation, Carolyn Coyne
Pomona Senior Theses
In my thesis, I examine how various forms of news media from the 1900s to present day in Ohlone territory have framed a particular hegemonic ideology around fire that matches early colonial journal entries – an ideology that is fueled by fear, sensationalism, and exclusion and directly commits violence against the Ohlone people. I investigate this time period because this is when modern news corporations, like The New York Times, rose into prominence. Specifically, I question how media representations of fire inform regulations over controlled burns; what are the similarities in discourse between media framing and policy? What tactics are …

Swimming In Sh*T: Quantifying Lagoon Flushing Impacts On Fecal Indicator Bacteria In Surf Zones Of Three Beaches On The East End Of Long Island, Ny, Brody C. Eggert
Pomona Senior Theses
This thesis investigates how lagoon flushing influences fecal indicator bacteria (FIB) concentrations—specifically enterococcus bacteria—in the surf zones of East Hampton and Southampton, New York. Focusing on the coastal lagoons of Georgica Pond, Sagg Pond, and Mecox Bay, the study analyzes how episodic inlet openings and environmental conditions affect enterococcus levels at adjacent recreational beaches. Using over 700 observations from the Surfrider Foundation’s Blue Water Task Force (BWTF) database, I construct a series of statistical models ranging from ordinary least squares to mixed effects frameworks; this thesis shows my process in developing this model. My analysis reveals that open inlets between …
“Nice To See You”: Addressing Plant Awareness Disparity With Locally Specific Ecological And Cultural Plant Education, Cecilia Muecke
“Nice To See You”: Addressing Plant Awareness Disparity With Locally Specific Ecological And Cultural Plant Education, Cecilia Muecke
Pomona Senior Theses
Plants form the basis of life on Earth. However, due to the phenomenon of plant awareness disparity, a self-perpetuating cycle whereby plants are overlooked on an individual and global level ensues. Lack of plant awareness leads to a lessened emphasis on plants in sustainability and conservation as well as biology education, resulting in negative impacts on biodiversity and food security. The severity of plant awareness disparity is dependent on cultural context, and Indigenous and/or traditional societies are less likely to experience plant awareness disparity because of they are typically more connected to plants for their everyday needs. Native plants are …
The Chthulucene Is Colonial Ecology: Ontology And Ethics In Anti-Colonial Environmental Theory, Aaron Morgan
The Chthulucene Is Colonial Ecology: Ontology And Ethics In Anti-Colonial Environmental Theory, Aaron Morgan
Pomona Senior Theses
This thesis interrogates the movement from ontology (what things are) to ethics (what one should do) in the context of environmental theory and settler colonialism. From new materialism to posthumanism, theorists within the “ontological turn” aim to overcome the anti-ecological foundations of modern philosophy (e.g., dualisms of nature and society, matter and meaning, body and mind). Contra dualism, critical environmental theorists argue that relational ontologies can produce more ecologically responsible ethical frameworks, affects, and values. In this thesis, I focus on appeals to climate anxiety and ecological urgency as two common discursive formations that function to redirect philosophical accounts of …
Narrative (In)Completion In Chaucer’S The Canterbury Tales And Woolf’S The Waves, Ananya Ramkumar
Narrative (In)Completion In Chaucer’S The Canterbury Tales And Woolf’S The Waves, Ananya Ramkumar
Pomona Senior Theses
I examine how narrative and personal completion manifest—and are continually unsettled—in The Canterbury Tales and The Waves. Though separated by centuries and written within vastly different literary traditions, both texts explore the tension between fragmentation and wholeness: the ways in which stories and characters can be constructed from partial, shifting materials, and the ways in which the illusion of completeness can mask deeper absences (holes). Drawing on Woolf’s own theories of reading and character—and her sense that readers instinctively create “rickety and ramshackle” wholes from scattered impressions—I will consider how each text engages with the paradox of narrative closure. …
