Wondering And Wandering, Madeleine Herisson-Leplae Jan 2025

Wondering And Wandering, Madeleine Herisson-Leplae

Theses and Dissertations

For my thesis, I have taken the concept of excavation and used it as a visual metaphor for my artistic process. Using my recurring motifs of a hole, ladder, and the gem, I break down the writing into three sections. First, the hole, a metaphor for entering an image; second, the ladder, process as investigation; and lastly, the gem, which represents wonder and delight. This work is influenced by childhood fantasies, video games, and believing in magic.

Love Letter, Amy S. Duval Ms Jan 2025

Love Letter, Amy S. Duval Ms

Theses and Dissertations

I applied to graduate school to reconnect with and better understand my studio practice, acquire language, and to disrupt my known ways of making. Generally speaking, I see my practice as being about being seen, and unseen, and the pain and pleasure of being perceived. I’ve learned about my ways of being in the studio. I’ve come closer to speaking honestly about my relationship with my materials, processes, tools, how I value my own labor, and how this informs my work. I am grateful for the cascade of small epiphanies that came and left me while I worked in my …

Anchoring Digital Sovereignty, Vivek Krishnamurthy Jan 2025

Anchoring Digital Sovereignty, Vivek Krishnamurthy

Publications

For a quarter-century, a consensus has prevailed that territorial sovereignty applies online as it does offline. Since practically all the Internet's infrastructure and its billions of users reside on the territory of states, conventional wisdom holds that sovereignty must extend to cyberspace. Such accounts ignore how people experience cyberspace as a distinctive place, and how current international law lacks safeguards to prevent states from exercising their sovereignty to splinter the Internet into a set of national networks. Territorial sovereignty is also hard to square with pledges by the world's democracies to keep the Internet free, open, and global; yet it …

Transforming Tax Expenditures, Sloan G. Speck Jan 2025

Transforming Tax Expenditures, Sloan G. Speck

Publications

For decades, reformers have advocated the repeal of tax expenditures--disguised government spending through special preferences in the Internal Revenue Code. And yet, tax expenditures persist, impairing federal tax receipts by more than $1.8 trillion in 2024. This Article introduces a novel mechanism for tax expenditure reform. To the extent that direct statutory repeal proves impossible or impractical, lawmakers can achieve an equivalent result through a strategy of legislative anti-repeal. By radically expanding a tax expenditure's legal scope, then adjusting progressive income tax rates to account for revenue loss and distributional considerations, lawmakers can effectively eliminate tax expenditures from the tax …

Nist's Software Un-Standards, Bryan H. Choi Jan 2025

Nist's Software Un-Standards, Bryan H. Choi

Publications

The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) has become a beacon of hope for those who trust in federal standards for software and AI safety. Moreover, lawmakers and commentators have indicated that compliance with NIST standards ought to shield entities from liability. With more than a century of expertise in scientific research and standard setting, NIST would seem to be uniquely qualified to develop such standards.

But as I argue in this Article, this faith is misplaced. NIST’s latest forays in risk management frameworks disavow concrete metrics or outcomes, and solicit voluntary participation instead of providing stable mandates. That …

Impacted Stakeholder Participation In Ai And Data Governance, Margot Kaminski, Gianclaudio Malgieri

Publications

Privacy law has long centered on the individual. But we observe a meaningful shift toward group harm and rights. There is growing recognition that data-driven practices, including the development and use of artificial intelligence (AI) systems, affect not just atomized individuals but also their neighborhoods and communities, including and especially situationally vulnerable and historically marginalized groups.

This Article explores a recent shift in both data privacy law and the newly developing law of AI: a turn towards stakeholder participation in the governance of AI and data systems, specifically by impacted groups often though not always representing historically marginalized communities. In …

Anomaly Detection Based Post Gripping Perception For Industrial Logistics Robotics, Firas Zoghlami

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses

The adoption of low volume high mix manufacturing lines in global production sites has lead to a great need for flexible automation solutions. Flexible intelligent robots as an example are increasingly deployed in new industrial environments, such as the intra-logistics, in order to increase the automation level of the mentioned manufacturing lines. The lack of structure and the high dynamic of such industrial environments lead to potential performance deterioration related to unexpected events that are not recognized by the robot. Detecting such changes in the robot environment is believed in this thesis to be possible with anomaly detection techniques which …

A Testing Load: A Review Of Cognitive Load In Computer And Paper-Based Learning And Assessment, James Pengelley, Peter R. Whipp, Anabela Malpique

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

The rising use of technology in classrooms has also brought with it a concomitant wave of computer-based assessments. The argument for computer-based testing is often framed in terms of efficiency and data management: computer-based tests facilitate more efficient processing of test data and the rate at which feedback can be leveraged for student learning rather than being framed in terms of the direct effects that students experience from engaging with novel learning tools. Whilst potentially beneficial, for some students the outcomes of computer-based tests may be counter-productive. This review considers the cognitive, and often implicit, consequences of testing mode upon …

Interactions Of Anthropogenic Microfibres With The Marine Macroalga, Ulva Lactuca, Adam Collins, Andrew Turner Jan 2025

Interactions Of Anthropogenic Microfibres With The Marine Macroalga, Ulva Lactuca, Adam Collins, Andrew Turner

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

Little information exists on the interactions between microfibres (MFs) and marine macroalgae. In this study, the translucent green seaweed, Ulva lactuca, has been exposed to ∼2 mg L−1 suspensions of MFs prepared from dryer lint under controlled conditions, with MFs on the alga surface and remaining in seawater subsequently counted and characterised. MFs were mainly <2 mm and cellulosic, and contained various additives and chemicals used in textile treatment. Interactions of MFs with U. lactuca were spatially heterogeneous but correcting for pre-existent MFs on the surface, mean trapping efficiencies on a dry mass and surface area basis were 252 mL g−1 and 0.858 mL cm−2, respectively. Despite this heterogeneity, there was evidence of differential trapping based on fibre colour and length. Interactions between the amphiphilic algal surface and MFs are likely both hydrophobic and electrostatic and are not fully reversible, with only …

In a geological disposal facility (GDF) for spent fuel and high-level radioactive waste, the canister serves as one of the main engineered barriers. The resistance of the canister to degradation processes such as microbially influenced corrosion (MIC) needs be characterised to support GDF environmental safety cases. Here the impacts of salinity on sulfate-reducing bacterial (SRB) activity and associated MIC were explored in 84-day batch incubations at 30 °C. A 5 % standard bentonite slurry (MX80) in a low-salinity (0.1 g l−1 NaCl) artificial groundwater containing lactate added as an electron donor provided suitable conditions for the proliferation of SRB. …

Steering Towards A Permanent Schism? The Establishment Of The Russian Orthodox Exarchate In Africa, Pål Kolstø Jan 2025

Steering Towards A Permanent Schism? The Establishment Of The Russian Orthodox Exarchate In Africa, Pål Kolstø

Occasional Papers on Religion in Eastern Europe

When the Ecumenical Patriarch granted the Orthodox Church of Ukraine autocephalous status in 2019, in what was hitherto recognized as the the canonical territory the Moscow patriarchate (MP), the Russian Orthodox Church (ROC) retaliated two years later by establishing an Exarchate in the territory of the Patriarchate of Alexandria, one of the churches which sided with the Ecumenical Patriarch. In a few years’ time ROC had recruited more than 200 clerics in Africa who formerly served in the Patriarchate of Alexandria.

By moving from verbal protests to confrontational action, Moscow has drastically reduced the possibility of finding a compromise solution. …
