Dialing In Or Dialing Out? The Relationships Between State Telemedicine Law And Access To Buprenorphine, Stacey A. Tovino Jan 2025

Dialing In Or Dialing Out? The Relationships Between State Telemedicine Law And Access To Buprenorphine, Stacey A. Tovino

Faculty Articles

This Article begins by reporting the results of a comprehensive 50-state survey assessing state laws and other state sources governing the telemedicine induction (“tele-induction”) and subsequent telemedicine prescription (“tele-prescription”) of buprenorphine for the treatment of opioid use disorder (“OUD”) following the expiration of the COVID-19 public health emergency (“PHE”). Original, concrete findings include: (1) the glaring patchwork of state law governing the tele-induction and subsequent tele-prescription of buprenorphine for the treatment of OUD in the United States; (2) the variety of primary authorities and secondary sources that house relevant permissions, prohibitions, and affiliated requirements; (3) the number of primary authorities …

Subsurface Trespass In The Restatement (Fourth) Of Property: An Appraisal And Alternative Account, Joseph A. Schremmer Jan 2025

Subsurface Trespass In The Restatement (Fourth) Of Property: An Appraisal And Alternative Account, Joseph A. Schremmer

Faculty Articles

Building on the scholarly work of leading property theorists Henry Smith and Thomas Merrill, the recently approved Fourth Tentative Draft of the Restatement (Fourth) of Property prescribes treating all entries below ground as ordinary trespasses. That includes entries in the shallow subsurface by building foundations and utility lines, as well as invasions in the deep subsurface by mining shafts, oil and gas wells, and substances injected for disposal and storage. The Restatement comes at an important time in the development of subsurface trespass law, as developers, courts, and policymakers grapple with the growing use of subsurface technologies for horizontal drilling, …

Editing Legal Scholarship, Michael L. Smith Jan 2025

Editing Legal Scholarship, Michael L. Smith

Faculty Articles

A consistent byproduct of American legal scholarship is legal scholars' relentless complaints about the system. Most critics overreact to the existence of student editors and the occasional rough edit, demanding that we burn the whole thing down. I suggest a less dramatic response by identifying several editorial tendencies that are consistently more trouble than they're worth and suggesting that reforms begin there. I begin with the text of the Bluebook, which supports a turn away from explanatory parenthetical overuse and the automatic et al.-ing of multi-author sources. I then turn to editors' overreliance on their journal style guides, urging the …

Characterization Of Methylated Histone Modifications During Simian Virus 40 Early Transcription, Jacob Otto Haugen Jan 2025

Characterization Of Methylated Histone Modifications During Simian Virus 40 Early Transcription, Jacob Otto Haugen

Theses and Dissertations

Modifications of histone proteins play an important role in transcription. These modifications regulate how chromatin is compacted by the histone proteins and either made available for transcription or prevents transcription machinery from proceeding. The modifications can be added or removed by histone acetyltransferases and histone methyltransferases for the former, and histone deacetylates and demethylases for the latter. To explore the dynamicity of these modifications we used the simple but effective Simian Virus 40 (SV40) model. SV40 continues to be an important tool in understanding eukaryotic transcription. It experiences similar processes as cellular chromatin, utilizing host proteins to propagate its own …

Predicting Social Media Addiction: The Influence Of Paralinguistic Digital Affordances And Cognitive Processes On Social Media Use, Dakota Krebs Jan 2025

Predicting Social Media Addiction: The Influence Of Paralinguistic Digital Affordances And Cognitive Processes On Social Media Use, Dakota Krebs

Theses and Dissertations

Social media has become an increasing staple in everyday life for numerous people. Yet, excessive and repetitive social media usage may become problematic, to the extent that the behavior takes the form of a psychological addiction. The primary objective of this study was to explore prospective factors that could predict the psychological dependency on social media applications, characterized as social media addiction (SMA). Paralinguistic Digital Affordances (PDAs) are “likes” one receives on social media and may predict SMA via the expected gratification attained when a PDA is received. Cognitive processes, assessed with a general executive functioning index and the n-back …

Measuring The Clinical Effectiveness Of Telenutrition Medical Nutrition Therapy Among American Indian And Alaska Native Adults Newly Diagnosed With Type 2 Diabetes, Charisse Lindsey Holiday Jan 2025

Measuring The Clinical Effectiveness Of Telenutrition Medical Nutrition Therapy Among American Indian And Alaska Native Adults Newly Diagnosed With Type 2 Diabetes, Charisse Lindsey Holiday

Theses and Dissertations

The COVID-19 global pandemic was the impetus of the transition from in-person medical nutrition therapy (MNT) visits to telephone MNT. This occurred without evaluation of its clinical effectiveness, especially for American Indians and Alaska Natives (AI/AN). It is known that in-person MNT is clinically effective at lowering hemoglobin A1c (A1c) and that people with diabetes who experience food insecurity have poorer health. However, research characterizing food insecurity among AI/ANs is limited. This retrospective observational analytical study was conducted at the Phoenix Indian Medical Center (PIMC) in Phoenix, Arizona to assess the clinical effectiveness of telephone delivered MNT services by a …

The Impact Of Poverty On Student Achievement And Effective Strategies To Close The Gap, Alexis L. Sorbo Jan 2025

The Impact Of Poverty On Student Achievement And Effective Strategies To Close The Gap, Alexis L. Sorbo

All Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Poverty has a negative impact on student achievement through a variety of factors such as student engagement, motivation, parent engagement, and resource access. This thesis explores the relationship between poverty and academic achievement by examining how disparities related to socioeconomic status impact a student’s cognitive and emotional development. The reviewed research also investigates effective strategies that teachers and administrators can implement to mitigate these effects, such as using evidence-based instruction and behavior management strategies in the classroom, increasing parent engagement, applying regular, high-quality professional development, and providing equitable access to resources. Research highlights the importance of a holistic approach to …

Enhancing Electric Wheelchair Safety Via Battery State Of Charge Estimationwith Pcc–Nssr–Lstm Method, Chi Wing, Alex Tsang, Xiaoying Lu

Department of Construction, Environment and Engineering

This study explores a novel algorithm created to predict the state of charge (SOC) of batteries in electric wheelchairs (EWs) to improve EW safety by adjusting SOC thresholds and reducing consumer range anxiety. It involves collecting experimental data from lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery cells over 1500 cycles at 25◦C, encompassing various parameters. With the Pearson correlation coefficient (PCC), a select set of key parameters including voltage, temperature, dQ/dV (capacity increase to voltage increase ratio) are chosen as inputs for non-linear state space reconstruction long short-term memory (NSSR-LSTM) neural networks, facilitating precise SOC predictions. The study showcases the precision of …

Operando Characterization Of The Reversible “Zinc Oxide – Zincate – Metallic Zinc” Transformations In Rechargeable Ni-Zn Alkaline Batteries, Chi Wing, Alex Tsang

Department of Construction, Environment and Engineering

Rechargeable Ni-Zn alkaline batteries are of growing interest due to their intrinsic safety, high energy density, and environmental friendliness. To optimize the performance of the ZnO electrode in these batteries, it is essential to understand complex transformations that occur during charge and discharge of the reaction: . In this study, we employ a series of operando characterization techniques, including X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy, and online electrochemical mass spectroscopy (OEMS), to investigate the surface dynamics on the ZnO electrode. Our findings reveal the significant impacts of decoupling the chemical and electrochemical processes, resulting in hydrogen gas evolution, diffusion of anions …

Development Of Aln-Loaded Pet Separators From Waste Water Bottle Plastics With Superior Thermal Characteristics For Next-Generation Lithium-Ion Batteries, Chi Wing, Alex Tsang, Xiaoying Lu, Dawson Wai Shun Suen Jan 2025

Development Of Aln-Loaded Pet Separators From Waste Water Bottle Plastics With Superior Thermal Characteristics For Next-Generation Lithium-Ion Batteries, Chi Wing, Alex Tsang, Xiaoying Lu, Dawson Wai Shun Suen

Department of Construction, Environment and Engineering

Preventing short circuit hazard due to lithium (Li) dendrite formation across a separator from the anode of a lithium-ion battery (LIB) throughout operation is important; however, conventional separator materials cannot fulfil the increasing safety standards of next-generation LIBs. Thus, developing separator materials with high Li dendrite suppression ability in order to prevent short circuit is of paramount importance for realising next-generation LIBs. In this study, aluminum nitride-loaded polyethylene terephthalate (PET/AlN) composites with micro-/nanoarchitecture were synthesized using PET that was recycled from commercial waste bottles via an electrospinning strategy. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) suggested that AlN …

Review On Building Retro-Commissioning: A Systematic-Cascade Literature Analysis With Expert Validation, Wai Yee, Betty Chiu

Department of Construction, Environment and Engineering

To optimize the energy performance of buildings, governments worldwide have introduced retro-commissioning (RCx), a systematic investigation of opportunities to improve the performance of existing buildings. However, RCx studies and applications are not as prevalent as those in the other building energy related domains. The past and recent states of RCx research have not been thoroughly investigated, and future research directions remain unclear. Therefore, a review is conducted to address these gaps using a systematic-cascade approach that includes: retrieval of RCx publications from the ScienceDirect and Scopus databases; bibliometric analysis of the publications using the VOSviewer software; in-depth qualitative analysis of …
