Racial Disparities In Adherence To Diabetes Management Guidelines: The Impact Of Immigration Status Among Asian Populations In The U.S., Aliya Kuerban Phd, Fnp-Bc, Ms, Ma, Rn, Yuging Zhang

Nursing: Faculty Presentations

Background/Purpose

Asian populations in the U.S. demonstrate lower adherence to diabetes management guidelines compared to other racial groups. The American Diabetes Association (ADA) recommends a minimum of two annual A1C tests to manage diabetes effectively. This study examines racial disparities in adherence to these guidelines, focusing on the impact of immigration-related factors and patient perceptions of provider communication. The findings aim to identify barriers and inform strategies to enhance diabetes management and improve patient-provider interactions in underserved communities.

Theoretical/Conceptual Framework

This study employs a modified patient-provider communication model as its theoretical framework, emphasizing how effective communication can influence adherence to …

A National Assessment Of State Level Culvert Management Plans, Steven Michael Carvalho Jr Jan 2025

A National Assessment Of State Level Culvert Management Plans, Steven Michael Carvalho Jr

Honors Theses and Capstones

In this paper, infrastructure asset management was explored, particularly culvert management, with the main objective being the investigation of culvert management plans nationally in the United States of America. These documents were collected, categorized for context, and evaluated for the addressing of increasingly important concepts for modern times. These research parameters, prioritization strategy, social equity, and climate change, were then compared to two other considerations to create more inferences and potential conclusions: geographical region and political ideology. A statistical analysis was then conducted spearheaded by Spearman’s correlation, a test that measured the strength of a potential correlation between two variables. …

Investigating The Lyoprotective Properties Of An Antifreeze Protein From A Broadleaf Desert Shrub, Alexzandria Sheppard Jan 2025

Investigating The Lyoprotective Properties Of An Antifreeze Protein From A Broadleaf Desert Shrub, Alexzandria Sheppard

Honors Theses and Capstones

Lyophilization, or freeze-drying, is an important preservation method for protein-based products, such as protein pharmaceuticals. However, the process introduces both freezing and drying stresses that can harm proteins. Here, we have studied the efficacy of AnAFP, a dehydrin-like antifreeze protein isolated from the broadleaf desert shrub Ammopiptanthus nanus, in reducing enzyme damage during freeze-drying, or lyophilization. We have shown that AnAFP can protect the model enzyme lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) from both freezing and dehydration damages during lyophilization with similar or better efficacy than 10% w/v sucrose and superior to that of another known antifreeze protein.

Sunbathers, Marta Louise Sorenson Jan 2025

Sunbathers, Marta Louise Sorenson

Art and Art History Honors Projects

Sunbathers is a Studio Art Honors project that explores the awkward intimate nature of introspective life through autobiographical, figurative ceramic sculptures. The forms capture the relationship between body and reality. The project consists of seven portraits, varying in size and display, arranged together on pink pedestals. Each figure communicates a part of self, embodying the internal interactions of everyday existence. The sculptures perform as objects yet speak with the specific sense of being seen/presented. Features shift in and out of focus—glossy glazes draw the eye, while matte colors move inward; the exaggerated, slumped forms are adorned with bright, illuminating glazes. …

Mathematical Drought: The Impact Of Insufficient Instructional Resources In Middle School Math Education, Artia N. Alston

Doctor of Education Dissertations

This research analyzed and examined the impact of resource quality and availability within middle school math instruction within a selected school district. The VRIO framework explored how value, rarity, imitability, and organization influence instructional effectiveness and resource allocation. Collecting data through interviews and questionnaires from teachers and administrators helped to identify gaps in professional development, technology access, and instructional materials. The study revealed the disparities in resource allocation that have contributing factors such as school demographics, external financial support, and funding mechanisms. This examination identified a misalignment between available resources and instructional math needs affecting student performance. These results underscored …

Teacher Voices: A Qualitative Interview Investigation Of International Teachers Adjusting To Teaching In The United States, Marlene R. Harrison-Reid Jan 2025

Teacher Voices: A Qualitative Interview Investigation Of International Teachers Adjusting To Teaching In The United States, Marlene R. Harrison-Reid

Doctor of Education Dissertations

Teachers emigrate annually from their native countries to seek employment in the United States. Their roles as cultural ambassadors and highly qualified professionals are put to the test in a new environment. International teachers, like their native counterparts, are charged with the task of meeting the needs of each student. Traditionally, teachers were recruited in hard-to-staff areas such as bilingual education, foreign languages, math, and science; however, for the past decade, recruitment has been done across all disciplines. This study examined the adjustment process and its impact on both educators and the education system in the United States. The goal …

Examining The Influence Of Teacher Perceptions On Implementing Behavior Interventions And Their Impact On Student Achievement, Teresa J. Edwards Jan 2025

Examining The Influence Of Teacher Perceptions On Implementing Behavior Interventions And Their Impact On Student Achievement, Teresa J. Edwards

Doctor of Education Dissertations

This mixed methods sequential explanatory study examined how elementary teachers’ perceptions influenced the fidelity and effectiveness of behavioral interventions in K–5 public schools. Grounded in Bandura’s (1986) Social Cognitive Theory and Fixsen et al.’s (2019) Implementation Science Framework, the study explored the relationship between teacher confidence, professional development, and outcomes related to student achievement. Quantitative data showed reductions in behavior incidents, in-school suspensions (ISS), and out-of-school suspensions (OSS) from fall to spring, while qualitative data from surveys and interviews emphasized the need for sustained support, differentiated intervention plans, and a strong school-wide culture. Teachers noted that one-time trainings were insufficient …

Connecting Principals To The Implementation Of A Multi-Tiered System Of Support, Douglas L. Rose Jan 2025

Connecting Principals To The Implementation Of A Multi-Tiered System Of Support, Douglas L. Rose

Doctor of Education Dissertations

The purpose of this explanatory sequential mixed methods study was to examine the implementation of a multi-tiered system of support (MTSS) through the lens of secondary school administrators following professional development. The professional development was chunked and spread over time following the principles of Cognitive Load Theory (Sweller, 2010) to expand understanding of MTSS implementation. Following the professional development, 25 administrators completed a 42-question survey. Ten secondary administrators completed an 11-question interview to expand on the results of the survey. The culmination of results from the quantitative survey, qualitative interviews, and literature provided insight into the practices that increase administrator …
