Latina Triunfadoras: Testimonios And Consejos Of Latina Superintendents In California, Marisela Kinn Jan 2025

Latina Triunfadoras: Testimonios And Consejos Of Latina Superintendents In California, Marisela Kinn

LMU Theses and Dissertations

The current dissertation examined the leadership of six Latina leaders in the executive role of the superintendency, presenting valuable testimonios (M. A. Martinez et al., 2017) that detail the early educational and familial experiences shaping the Latina superintendents’ journeys to the superintendency. The qualitative study used the community cultural wealth framework (Yosso, 2005) and a feminista perspective grounded in Chicana/Latina feminist epistemology (Delgado Bernal, 1998) and Latina leadership (Bordas, 2013, 2023) to explore the leadership principles employed by the six superintendents. The study revealed three significant findings. First, Latina superintendents’ parents instilled a work ethic of perseverance, hard work, and …

Machine Learning Approach To Predict The Early-Age Flexural Strength Of Sensor-Embedded 3d-Printed Structures, Kasra Banijamali, Mary Dempsey, Jianhua Chen, Ali Kazemian Jan 2025

Machine Learning Approach To Predict The Early-Age Flexural Strength Of Sensor-Embedded 3d-Printed Structures, Kasra Banijamali, Mary Dempsey, Jianhua Chen, Ali Kazemian

Faculty Publications

The absence of formwork in 3D-printed concrete, unlike conventional mold-cast concrete, introduces greater variability in curing conditions, posing significant challenges in accurately estimating the early-age mechanical strength. Therefore, common non-destructive techniques such as the maturity method fail to deliver a generalized predictive model for the mechanical strength of 3D-printed structures. In this study, multiple machine learning (ML) algorithms, including linear regression (LR), support vector regression (SVR), and artificial neural network (ANN), were developed to estimate the early-age flexural strength of 3D-printed beams under varying curing conditions, utilizing data collected from embedded sensors. Six input variables were employed for the ML …

Silicate agrominerals (SA) may be sustainable soil amendments that can minimize dependence on conventional fertilizers (CF). We evaluated the residual effects of SA application as a source of Si and as a soil remineralizer, using soils with contrasting chemical-physical features cultivated with soybean. The experiment was conducted under greenhouse conditions and treatments were arranged in a 5 × 2 + 2 factorial scheme: five rates of SA, two soils in addition to CF. The soil was incubated before cultivation, followed by the sequential sowing of corn and soybean. At the R4 phenological stage, when the pods were fully developed, soybean …

From Microbes To Molecules: Synthetic Biology Approaches For Advanced Materials Design, Roshini Ramachandran, Frank Macabenta, Grace Bettencourt, Shulammite Feng

Biology, Agriculture and Chemistry Faculty Publications and Presentations

Traditional materials synthesis often involves energy-intensive processes with significant waste generation and limited control over material properties. This review examines synthetic biology as a sustainable alternative for designing advanced materials with enhanced precision and versatility. It explores microbial biomineralization, detailing how microorganisms influence the formation of mineral deposits and participate in key biogeochemical cycles. It highlights recent research advancements in using a wide variety of microorganisms for the synthesis of inorganic materials such as metal and metal oxide nanoparticles, quantum dots, magnetic nanoparticles, and thin films. The review also discusses the production and properties of various biopolymers. Important factors that …

Measuring The Similarity Between Trees Of Different Order, Camilo Morales Jan 2025

Measuring The Similarity Between Trees Of Different Order, Camilo Morales

HMC Senior Theses

Graphs encode relationships between data. However, due to their versatility, it is often difficult to generalize the notion of similarity between two graphs using a distance function. Since graphs can represent various data sets, specific distance metrics need to be tailored for questions we are interested in answering or the data set we are working with. This project is motivated by ongoing investigations into the evolution of female gender representation in mathematics. By building off previous work that has taken data from the Mathematics Genealogy Project and modeled this evolution of representation via a tree, we would like to develop …

Bruen: The Court's Announcement Of The Historical Analogy Test And The Aftermath Thereof, Michael Partrick

Wyoming Law Review

The United States Supreme Court’s history of analyzing firearms restrictions has seemingly always led to ambiguities and confusion in lower courts. This was especially true after 2008, when the Court decided District of Columbia v. Heller, 554 U.S. 570 (2008). In the years following Heller, lower courts across the country applied different standards to determine the constitutionality of firearms restrictions. The Court granted certiorari in New York State Rifle & Pistol Ass’n v. Bruen, 597 U.S. 1 (2022) to establish the proper test for determining whether a firearm regulation is constitutional. This test is based on U.S. …

Legislating Morality: The Historical Consequences Of The Mann Act On The American Public, Chance J. Harper Jan 2025

Legislating Morality: The Historical Consequences Of The Mann Act On The American Public, Chance J. Harper

Wyoming Law Review

The Mann Act, officially titled the “White Slave Traffic Act of June 25 1910,” was a product of a time of immense social, ethnic, and political change. The Mann Act was presented as the solution to “white slavery”— an imagined crisis where white-American girls were forced into prostitution. This crisis was attributed to the influx of traditionally “othered” ethnic groups, which shocked the nation and prompted sweeping action by politicians to protect white-American values and culture in the name of stopping forced prostitution. In addition to perceived threats to American values, fears of immigrant power as a voting block and …

From Overbearing Austerity To Holy Longing: Comparing The Observance Of Lent In Rm And Rb, Travis Spillum Osb

Obsculta

This work compares the chapter on Lenten observance in the Rule of the Master and the Rule of Saint Benedict. Textual analysis reveals Benedict’s aversion to the Master’s strict and austere instructions for the Lenten fast, preferring instead to offer moderate guidelines that cultivate in the monk a joyful longing for the Easter celebration.

Idolatry In Ancient Rome Can Be A Teaching Tool Today, Garrett S. "Faustino" Miller Oblsb

Obsculta

This essay analyzes idolatry from the context of both the early Christians before the 3rd century as well as the interpretation of the modern day through looking at the early Christian martyrs and their defiance of Rome as an act of abstaining from the sin of idolatry while seeing how contemporary Christians can abstain from idolatry in the modern era, learning from ancient wisdom how to battle this sin.

Can We Ever Arrive At A Conclusive Interpretation Of Scripture?, Jarrod Julian Lee Jan 2025

Can We Ever Arrive At A Conclusive Interpretation Of Scripture?, Jarrod Julian Lee

Obsculta

The Church today is highly fragmented, with thousands of denominations. Unsurprisingly, there is much disagreement on how to interpret Scripture, even within the Catholic Church. This piece examines if an objectively right answer on how to interpret Scripture is possible, focusing on the Gospels, especially Luke’s, and three candidates that can play such an arbitration role between competing interpretations – historical truth, experts and the author’s intention. While no conclusive answer can be obtained, radical skepticism is not an inevitability; the broad parameter that is our community’s intuitions can play a ‘loose’ arbitration role.
