Kinetic Model Of Glycolysis And Glutaminolysis Interplay Developed In Matlab Simbiology, Zohreh Mirveis, Hugh J. Byrne, Nitin Patil
Datasets
This dataset contains a kinetic model developed in MATLAB SimBiology to simulate the metabolic dynamics of glycolysis and glutaminolysis and their interconnection. The model was used in the study ‘Experimental and computational investigation of the kinetic evolution of the glutaminolysis pathway and its interplay with the glycolysis pathway’ (Mirveis et al., 2024). The dataset includes the original SimBiology project file together with the experimental data used for model training. These resources enable reproduction of the simulations reported in the publication and provide a reusable framework for further computational exploration of metabolic pathway kinetics.

Interpreting The Latent Space Of A Convolutional Variational Autoencoder For Semi-Automated Eye Blink Artefact Detection In Eeg Signals, Sabatina Criscuolo, Andrea Apicella, Roberto Prevete, Luca Longo
Articles
Electroencephalography (EEG) allows the investigation of brain activity. However, neural signals often contain artefacts, hindering signal analysis. For example, eye-blink artefacts are particularly challenging due to their frequency overlap with neural signals. Artificial intelligence, particularly Variational Autoencoders (VAE), has shown promise in EEG artefact removal. This research explores the design and application of Convolutional VAEs for automatically detecting and removing eye blinks in EEG signals. The latent space of CVAE, trained on EEG topographic maps, is used to identify latent components that are selective for eye blinks. Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) curves and Area Under the Curve (AUC) are employed …

Social media platforms are an integral part of daily life for nearly five billion people worldwide. However, the growing presence of underage users on these platforms raises significant concerns regarding children's exposure to harmful content and its impact on their mental health. This paper examines the effectiveness of age verification measures implemented on leading platforms Facebook, YouTube, Instagram, TikTok, Snapchat, and X. We evaluate the age verification processes required for account creation by simulating the registration steps for minors on these platforms. We also compare these methods to best practices in online age assurance in finance, betting and public transportation …

Tandem of Perovskite and other materials for solar cell structure have attracted the attention of many researchers. Here, we developed a strong coupled model to investigate the heat generation and thermal stability of Perovskite/CZTSSe Tandem Solar Cells. Studying the opto-electro-thermal (OET) properties of tandem solar cells is essential to better understand the optical absorption, carrier transport, and their thermodynamic behavior. In recent years, thermal losses in solar cells have received more attention and heat generation in solar cell structure has said to be effective on long-term stability and performance. Temperature distribution and heat generation of tandem solar cells has been …

Bioinspired Gradient Porous Hip Implant Design To Prevent Stress Shielding Using Stress Mapping And Bone Remodeling Theory, Babak Ziaie, Xavier Velay, Waqas Saleem
Research Outputs: 2025-Present
Total Hip Arthroplasty (THA) is a widely performed surgical procedure, with increasing frequency worldwide. Despite its high success rate, many patients require revision surgeries due to complications such as aseptic loosening, primarily resulting from stress shielding, cortical hypertrophy, and micromotion. These issues often stem from a mechanical mismatch between the bone and the solid dense implant, particularly a mismatch in stiffness. A potential solution lies in the use of porous or lattice structures in implant design, which offer lower stiffness and improved biocompatibility by facilitating bone ingrowth, cell seeding, and vascularization. Among these designs, Triply Periodic Minimal Surfaces (TPMS), especially …

Conversations In The Classroom: Increasing Dialogic Inquiry To Dismantle Compliance-Based Teaching And Learning, Jill Rivera
Conversations In The Classroom: Increasing Dialogic Inquiry To Dismantle Compliance-Based Teaching And Learning, Jill Rivera
West Chester University Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Final Projects
Verbal interpersonal communication has been diminishing from the teaching and learning process over the past decade in public-school classrooms. School district administrations mandate teachers to utilize digital learning platforms and standardized tests due to the ease at which this technology can quickly gather data. While the transition to digital platforms and test-based education may be well-intended, the result has often been a decrease in dialogic inquiry-based pedagogy which removes teacher autonomy, student agency, and has negative effects on students’ ability to critically think and effectively engage in communication and instruction. The over-emphasis on collecting data based solely on a digitized …
Exploring Mental Health Concerns And Loneliness Among East Asian International Students In U.S. Universities, Shihan Xu
Antioch University Dissertations & Theses
This study examined the unique stressors encountered by international college students, with particular attention to East Asian international students, whose collectivistic cultural values contribute to their mental health status and reported symptoms. Following the COVID-19 pandemic, the rise in stress levels and loneliness highlighted the need for further examination. Using data collected in 2024 through the Counseling Center Assessment of Psychological Symptoms-34 (CCAPS-34) and the UCLA Loneliness Scale, the study surveyed East Asian international students enrolled in universities in the United States to identify prevalent mental health concerns and explore the correlation between loneliness and self-reported symptoms among East Asian …

21st-Century Stewardship: Infusing Environmental Education With Global Citizenship, Ava Y. Goodale
Antioch University Dissertations & Theses
In today's interconnected world, where socioecological issues transcend political borders, integrating environmental stewardship education with global citizenship education offers valuable opportunities for student empowerment. The goal of this multi-article dissertation was to conceptualize and operationalize 21st-century stewardship in educational settings. Twenty-first-century stewardship is a pedagogical approach that recognizes the limitations of environmental stewardship education as it is traditionally taught and is defined in Chapter II as an updated stewardship model that is infused with global citizenship’s multiscalar perspectives, global compacts, and layered identities to achieve its maximum impact in our interconnected world. This goal was first accomplished in Chapter II …

This review paper identifies key stability and control screening parameters needed to design low-risk, general-purpose high-speed aircraft. These derive from MIL-STD-8785C, MIL-STD-1797, and older AGARD reports, and are suitable for assessing conceptual high-speed vehicles. We demonstrate their applicability using published ground test, computation, and flight test data from the Bell X-2, North American X-15, Martin X-24A, Northrop HL-10, Lockheed Blackbird (YF-12/SR-71), and North American XB-70 as well as the Rockwell Space Shuttle Orbiter. The relative success of the X-15 and Blackbird and the performance limitations of the others indicate the need to scrutinize lateral-directional stability at the preliminary design phase. …

Background and Objectives: Racial and ethnic variations in antibiotic utilization are well-reported in outpatient settings but little is known about inpatient settings. Our objective was to describe national inpatient antibiotic utilization among children by race and ethnicity. Methods: This study included hospital visit data from the Pediatric Health Information System between 01/01/2022 and 12/31/2022 for patients <20 years. Primary outcomes were the percentage of hospitalization encounters that received an antibiotic and antibiotic days of therapy (DOT) per 1000 patient days. Mixed-effect regression models were used to determine the association of race-ethnicity with outcomes, adjusting for covariates. Results: There were 846,530 hospitalizations. 45.2% of children were Non-Hispanic (NH) White, 27.1% were Hispanic, 19.2% were NH Black, 4.5% were NH Other, 3.5% were NH Asian, 0.3% were NH Native Hawaiian/Other Pacific Islander (NHPI) and 0.2% were NH American Indian. Adjusting for covariates, NH Black children had lower odds of receiving antibiotics compared to NH White children (aOR 0.96, 95%CI 0.94–0.97), while NH NHPI had higher odds of receiving antibiotics (aOR 1.16, 95%CI 1.05–1.29). Children who were Hispanic, NH Asian, NH American Indian, and children who were NH Other received antibiotic DOT compared to NH White children, while NH NHPI children received more antibiotic DOT. Conclusions: Antibiotic utilization in children’s hospitals differs by race and ethnicity. Hospitals should assess policies and practices that may contribute to disparities in treatment; antibiotic stewardship programs may play an important role in promoting inpatient pharmacoequity. Additional research is needed to examine individual diagnoses, clinical outcomes, and drivers of variation.

Introduction: Prostate cancer (CaP) is the second most common cancer in men globally and a leading cause of cancer-related mortality, particularly among older men. In the United States, disparities in incidence, stage at diagnosis, and outcomes persist across racial, socioeconomic, and geographic lines. Men in medically underserved regions like Appalachia experience higher mortality due to limited access to timely screening and treatment. Given the complex interplay of clinical, behavioral, and sociodemographic factors, machine learning (ML) offers promise in identifying survival predictors that traditional models may overlook. This study applies ML models to assess the impact of age at diagnosis, treatment …

Limbic predominant age-related TDP-43 encephalopathy neuropathologic change (LATE-NC) is highly prevalent in late life and a common co-pathology with Alzheimer's disease neuropathologic change (ADNC). LATE-NC is a slowly progressive, amnestic clinical syndrome. Alternatively, when present with ADNC, LATE-NC is associated with a more rapid course. With the emergence of anti-amyloid therapeutics, discrimination of LATE-NC from ADNC is critical and will lead to greater clinical recognition of amnestic patients without ADNC. Furthermore, co-pathology with LATE-NC may influence outcomes of these therapeutics. Thus there is a need to identify patients during life with likely LATE-NC. We propose criteria for clinical diagnosis of …

Introduction: Residents frequently conduct code status discussions (CSDs) with patients, but many report not receiving formal training in this skill. While institutions have attempted to address this, there remains a need for a curriculum that uses standardized patients (SPs), is generalizable to students interested in different medical specialties, and has been tested on a large sample of students. Methods: We trained 192 fourth-year medical students across four different campuses in how to conduct CSDs during one 2-hour workshop as part of their Transition to Residency course in April 2024. Students worked with SPs as part of this workshop. Students at …

Neurocysticercosis is a poorly understood infection of the central nervous system with Taenia solium larva and treatment often fails to kill all the parasitic larva. Most research on this infection has used patient-level data, looking at summaries of the encysted parasitic cysticercus burden. Cyst-level analysis is needed to identify factors that impact individual cyst trajectories and how that may vary based on characteristics of the patient, infection, and cyst being followed. We disaggregated data on 221 cysts from 117 patients who participated in a trial evaluating the impact of albendazole treatment to identify factors that impact cyst evolution over time …

Many types of health science learners, including clinical and translational scientists, students, researchers, and clinicians, seek to increase their knowledge of biostatistics. These learners are heterogeneous in their field, career stage and career focus. Based on the collective experience of an expert panel with over 115 years teaching statistics to health science learners, we propose a framework for considering the needs of health science learners motivated by their career goals. This framework defines four types of health science learners seeking statistical training: (a) consumers, (b) “milestone makers”, (c) biomedical researchers with statistical support, and (d) biomedical researchers without statistical support. …

Background Median sternotomy and chest tube sites drive pain following cardiac surgery. Prior research has demonstrated that pecto-intercostal fascial plane blocks (PIFBs) reduce median sternotomy pain after cardiac surgery. Prior studies examining the addition of a rectus sheath block (RSB) to localize the insertion site of subxiphoid chest tubes have had mixed results. Methods In this single-center, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial, 62 patients undergoing cardiac surgery with median sternotomy and subxiphoid chest tubes were randomized to receive PIFB and RSB with local anesthetic versus PIFB with local anesthetic and RSB with saline placebo. The primary outcome was pain at rest …

Background: Neighborhood advantage/disadvantage is a social determinant of health. We aimed to examine the distribution and associations between child chronic health conditions and four commonly used indices. Methods: Children with outpatient visits and valid addresses (n = 115,738) were included and outcomes were categorized as having no chronic disease (N-CD), non-complex chronic disease (NC-CD), and complex chronic disease (C-CD). Four measures of neighborhood characteristics (Child Opportunity Index, Area Deprivation Index, Neighborhood Disadvantage Index, Social Vulnerability Index were calculated from census data. Separate multinomial logistic regression models were used. Results: The indices’ scores were correlated (r = 0.80–0.92). Children in low …

Objectives: There is emerging data supporting rapid triage of low-risk chest pain patients to help facilitate Emergency Department (ED) throughput. We assessed an algorithm for accelerated rule-out of acute coronary syndrome in low-risk patients with an undetectable initial high sensitivity cardiac troponin (hs-cTn assays; Roche Diagnostics) in a real-world clinical setting. Methods: All adults presenting with chief complaint of non-traumatic chest pain to our tertiary care ED with HEART score ≤3 with at least one hs-cTn and EKG obtained were included in our study. Data and outcomes were compared three months before and after implementation of our updated Acute Chest …

This paper suggests that intergenerational arts programs, particularly those conducted in public schools, can help participants build empathy, a sense of community and belonging. Evidence of these changes was collected through informal observations during three intergenerational art classes in a first grade classroom, as well as through discussions with participants before and after their participation in the intergenerational arts programming. Empathy and community can be built through carefully planned collaborative art-making opportunities and the effect can be evidenced in the forming of relationships, the absence of behavioral problems, and the building of the facilitator’s personal network. The paper concludes that …
