Survey-Weighted Ordinal Modeling Of Alcohol-Associated Liver Disease Severity Through Social Determinants Of Health, Jaylene Viveros Cruz Jan 2025

Survey-Weighted Ordinal Modeling Of Alcohol-Associated Liver Disease Severity Through Social Determinants Of Health, Jaylene Viveros Cruz

Selected Full-Text Master Theses 2021-

Alcohol-associated liver disease (ALD) is a condition that describes the spectrum of disease and liver injury attributed to the consumption of alcohol. ALD diagnosis is heavily dependent on alcohol use, making it challenging to test for, as alcohol use is often self-reported, and early-stage ALD can present asymptomatically. This study aims to explore how social determinants of health associated with alcohol use behaviors predict ALD-related liver stress risk. MEC participants included in the two two-year cycles of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), 2014-2014 and 2015-2016, were assigned liver stress labels based on clinical thresholds for ALD diagnosis. …

ASEAN Journal on Science and Technology for Development

The proportional systems in vernacular architecture often exist without formal written codification, raising questions about their transmission across generations. Bubungan Tinggi House which is a replica of the Banjar Kingdom palace was built by Banjarese merchants and aristocrats from the 16th to the 19th centuries, showing a uniform aesthetic quality, which indicates a regularity in the proportions of its form. However, no historical written manuals detailing these proportions are known to exist. To prove the existence of regularity in the Bubungan Tinggi House proportion system, research was conducted by taking 7 Bubungan Tinggi House samples spread across South Kalimantan province, …

Electrostatic Effects On The Transport And Dispersion Of Micro-Nano Pharmaceutical Powders, Mohammed Ali

Technology Faculty Publications and Presentations

A predetermined amount of micro-nano powder particles contributes to the treatment during a patient’s inhalation of the bolus of respiratory micro-nano pharmaceutical powders in an aerosolized state from commercially available inhalers. The most popular inhalers are the metered dose inhalers (MDIs) and dry powder inhalers (DPIs). While inhaling, the complicated inlet velocity profile and turbulent flow in the mouth-throat significantly impact the gaining of electrostatic charge through triboelectric charging. The inhaled particles are not only varying sizes but also polarities of charges. However, few studies have been conducted to investigate electrostatic charge force effects on particle losses in the oral, …

Cell Competition Eliminates Aneuploid Human Pluripotent Stem Cells, Amanda I. Ya Jan 2025

Cell Competition Eliminates Aneuploid Human Pluripotent Stem Cells, Amanda I. Ya

Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations

Aberrant mitotic chromosome segregation results in the generation of cells with aneuploidy, an incorrect number of chromosomes. Aneuploidy can compromise the viability of the developing embryo and is the leading cause of pregnancy loss, failed embryo implantation, and congenital birth defects. Yet, widescale analysis of human embryos from in vitro fertilization (IVF) clinics suggests that aneuploidy is common, with upwards of 70% of preimplantation embryos being aneuploid.

Mitotic chromosome missegregation during post-zygotic development results in mosaic embryos made up of both diploid and aneuploid cells. Strikingly, upon transplant for pregnancy, mosaic embryos have been reported to result in healthy birth …

Pillar[n]arenes, discovered in 2008, have already made their mark as a formidable addition to the field of supramolecular chemistry, largely due to their host-guest chemistry. While the synthesis of pillar[5]arene is well established, the synthesis of pillar[6]arene, with its larger core, has not been so straightforward and mainly accomplished through the use of bulky solvents. Here we present an optimized method for a reproducible, acid-catalyzed synthesis for a brominated pillar[6]arene, starting with a brominated monomer and using chloroform as the templating solvent. Our studies have demonstrated the ratio of brominated pillar[6]arene to brominated pillar[5]arene increases with both decreasing concentration of …

Change Is People: How Faculty, Staff, And Administrators Engage With And Shape A Substantive Organizational Change Process, Karen Bellnier

Open Access Dissertations

Creating substantive organizational change (SOC) in higher education can face numerous challenges including navigating complex sets of rules and relationships, negotiating potentially conflicting perspectives, and balancing the motivations and goals of peers (Engeström, 2018b; Kezar, 2018). Each SOC change agent brings a unique perspective, identity and motivation (Eteläpelto et al., 2013; Gess-Newsome et al., 2003) to their conception of and relationship to the planned change (Hay et al., 2021; Weick, 1995). This dynamic nature makes SOC difficult to conceptualize as a whole - either as a researcher or a change agent - and therefore difficult to understand how change processes …

Probing Biomolecular Structure And Dynamics Via Infrared Action Spectroscopy, Madeline Schultz Jan 2025

Probing Biomolecular Structure And Dynamics Via Infrared Action Spectroscopy, Madeline Schultz

Open Access Dissertations

Biomolecular structure is supported by a network of inter- and intramolecular interactions, which can be inherently complex in the condensed phase. Isolating biomolecules from the condensed phase to vacuum, via electrospray ionization (ESI), can afford precise control over experimental conditions, yielding additional structural insight. However, the loss of solvation inherent to the ESI process can drive structural rearrangement, particularly at charge sites.

Microsolvation reagents can be used to partially mimic the solvation of charged moieties in solution as they are brought into the gas phase through complexation. This serves two primary functions: 1) reducing propensity for structural rearrangement of systems …
