Making Slums Legible, Visible And Calculable: Geospatial Technologies And The Governance Of Urban Land In Mumbai, Sanjana Krishnan Jan 2025

Making Slums Legible, Visible And Calculable: Geospatial Technologies And The Governance Of Urban Land In Mumbai, Sanjana Krishnan

Theses and Dissertations--Geography

This dissertation examines how geospatial technologies are used to make slums in Mumbai legible, calculable, and hypervisible, and how these practices reshape urban land governance. It situates mapping, remote sensing, and algorithmic systems within their political-economic contexts, showing how technologies intending to see the city often function as instruments of dispossession. The research has three interconnected empirical chapters. The first empirical chapter traces the history of slum mapping in Mumbai, from their absences in early development plans to their selective hypervisibility under the contemporary governance regimes. Using critical cartographic methods, it highlights how novel technologies such as remote sensing, biometric …

Yaoi Lesbians: Media, Identity, And Desire, Olivia Marquardt Jan 2025

Yaoi Lesbians: Media, Identity, And Desire, Olivia Marquardt

Theses and Dissertations--Linguistics

Media consumption reflects aspects of identity while also assisting in identity formation (Koller, 2008; Zemmels, 2012; Wu, 2006). This thesis examines the phenomenon of lesbians who engage with men-loving-men (MLM) media. The practice seems odd due to the contrast of lesbians desiring women for their social, platonic, romantic, and sexual relationships, but this thesis finds that repeated consumption of media that display men and their desires can index lesbianism. This practice helps lesbians construct their identities through three processes of indexicality: indexical disjuncture, indexical bleaching, and indexical denial (Barrett & Hall, 2024). Through a discourse analysis of five semi-constructed interviews …

Analyzing Agency In Online News Reporting Of The Events Of January 6th, 2021: A Corpus-Based Investigation, Matthew W. Abernethy Jan 2025

Analyzing Agency In Online News Reporting Of The Events Of January 6th, 2021: A Corpus-Based Investigation, Matthew W. Abernethy

Theses and Dissertations--Linguistics

Over the last decade or so, politics in the United States has become increasingly polarized. A central focus of this polarization has been the news media, including both traditional print news, online news, and television news. Results of this have been a rapid rise in misinformation, disinformation, the demonization of news (especially political) providers as purveyors of ‘Fake News’, and distrust in mainstream news outlets. The central focus of this thesis is bias in news reporting, leading naturally to the question of how widespread this bias really is. This thesis uses corpus linguistic and discourse analytic methods to pursue this …

Trashing Gender Scripts: Indexical Misrecognition In The Zine "Galatea's Naked", Jules Blank Jan 2025

Trashing Gender Scripts: Indexical Misrecognition In The Zine "Galatea's Naked", Jules Blank

Theses and Dissertations--Linguistics

Zines, short for ‘fanzines’ or ‘magazines,’ refer to physical, printed, self-published creations that can consist of a single sheet of paper or many, fastened together. These artifacts are rich with meaning—and, thus, can be read as tangible manifestations of the ideologies and identities of the creator(s).

This thesis focuses on the way zines are used as tools of resistance. Additionally, it shows that the creation and circulation of zines are highly pragmatic acts that solidify social bonds and enable individuals to perform and reinforce their emergent identities within a collective—explicitly making a claim about who they are and what they …

Cognate Facilitation And Processing In English-Speaking Learners Of German, Kaitlin L. Young Jan 2025

Cognate Facilitation And Processing In English-Speaking Learners Of German, Kaitlin L. Young

Theses and Dissertations--Linguistics

Within the field of second language acquisition, research finds that increased exposure to input results in improved proficiency, especially when those activities are challenging yet manageable for the language learner’s current level. Because of this, listening exercises and speech processing are considered integral to language acquisition, even leading to recommendations of frequent, authentic use of the target language (TL). Instructors’ TL authenticity is, however, sometimes stunted by the demand for comprehensible input and facilitation of classroom activities; they make use of simpler syntax, stronger enunciation, and more cognates (words sharing origins, meanings, and form across languages) than in casual speech. …

Orthographic Errors For Dysgraphic Second Language Learners In Russian And Hebrew, Kyra O. Morgan Jan 2025

Orthographic Errors For Dysgraphic Second Language Learners In Russian And Hebrew, Kyra O. Morgan

Theses and Dissertations--Linguistics

Students of Second Languages might be asked to learn new writing systems in the classroom. This study is interested in how dysgraphic students, that is, students with a specific learning impairment with regards to written expression, make errors in comparison to their peers. These errors revolve around orthography, spelling, and spacing. However, this study will take a turn and focus on how all of the respondents understood the prompt and what that says about their relationship with writing in the classroom.

Theses and Dissertations--Hispanic Studies

This dissertation examines the discursive construction of the political-religious cult surrounding Hugo Chávez through a theoretical and methodological approach that integrates Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) and Multimodal Discourse Analysis (MDA). Its central objective is to identify and interpret the incorporation of elements from the Venezuelan religious imaginary–particularly from popular Christianity–into the symbolic configuration of Chávez as a sacred figure within official discourse. The corpus analyzed includes official transcripts from the television program Aló Presidente, as well as two animated short films titled Chávez Nuestro que Estás en el Cielo (“Our Chávez Who Art in Heaven”), broadcast on Venezuelan public …

Paratum Fuit: Double Perfect Marking In Classical Latin Passives, James F. Epperson Ii Jan 2025

Paratum Fuit: Double Perfect Marking In Classical Latin Passives, James F. Epperson Ii

Theses and Dissertations--Linguistics

Despite thousands of years of study, certain constructions in Latin remain insufficiently described in modern Latin linguistics. One such construction is the double perfectum, an analytic verbal construction comprising the perfect passive participle and a perfectum forms of the auxiliary esse. These forms are rare, largely absent from educational Latin materials, and receive limited attention in scientific descriptions of Latin, often focusing on their evolution into the modern Romance verbal systems. Pinkster (2015) identifies them within a broader class of resultative constructions, but acknowledges their inconsistent usage. Earlier scholars, such as Riemann (1927), interpreted them as stative, while others, like …

Shaping A City: Municipal Housekeeping, Civic Activism, And Urban Environmentalism In Progressive Era Louisville Through The Women’S City Club, Amy J. Malventano

Theses and Dissertations--History

At the turn of the twentieth century, rapid industrialization and urban expansion transformed American cities, creating urgent challenges in governance, public health, and environmental management. In response, women across the United States extended their domestic expertise into the public sphere, spearheading initiatives to improve sanitation, waste disposal, and urban infrastructure. This dissertation examines the Louisville Women’s City Club (LWCC) as a case study of municipal housekeeping, demonstrating how middle-class women used their traditional roles to influence systemic reform in Louisville, Kentucky. By bridging gender history, urban environmentalism, and Progressive Era activism, this study reveals how the LWCC shaped public policy …

“A True And Broad Sympathy:” Thomas Hughes, Medievalism, And Social Justice In The Nineteenth Century, Sarah E. Stapleton Jan 2025

“A True And Broad Sympathy:” Thomas Hughes, Medievalism, And Social Justice In The Nineteenth Century, Sarah E. Stapleton

Theses and Dissertations--History

Thomas Hughes, author of Tom Brown’s Schooldays (1857), used medievalism to help solve social problems of the Nineteenth Century. This contravenes the traditional view of medievalism, especially Anglo-Saxonism, since others have used it to justify the subjugation of people of lower social status, namely the poor in England, enslaved African Americans in the United States, and Indians under British rule.

While the use of medievalism is veiled in Hughes’ work, the subtext of Tom Brown’s Schooldays demonstrated Hughes’ Anglo-Saxonism. Tom Brown and the intertextual material surrounding his narrative exhibit the characteristics of Anglo-Saxonism through cultural primitivism, the concept of allodial, …

The Alchemy Of Jim Crow And Chinese Exclusion: A Study Of Chinese Mississippian Experience From Reconstruction To The Civil Rights Movement, 1870-1967, Sixu Liu Jan 2025

The Alchemy Of Jim Crow And Chinese Exclusion: A Study Of Chinese Mississippian Experience From Reconstruction To The Civil Rights Movement, 1870-1967, Sixu Liu

Theses and Dissertations--History

This dissertation examines the history of the Chinese community in Mississippi from the Reconstruction era to the late 1960s. Despite the modest size of their population, the experience of Chinese Mississippians helps us answer a number of key questions regarding two of America’s most impactful institutions, Chinese exclusion and Jim Crow, and their recipients. Why did Chinese Mississippians come to a state that was known for racial hatred and racial oppression? How should a people that was neither Black nor White situate themselves in a society dictated by a Black-White binary? How did Mississippi, a state that was often not …

Regularized Methods For Tensor Recovery And Processing, Katherine J. Henneberger Jan 2025

Regularized Methods For Tensor Recovery And Processing, Katherine J. Henneberger

Theses and Dissertations--Mathematics

The rapid growth of high-dimensional data has exposed the limitations of traditional vector and matrix-based methods for data analysis. These methods often struggle with computational inefficiencies, loss of critical cross-dimensional correlations, and challenges inherent in high-dimensional data. Tensors—multidimensional arrays—offer a robust framework for modeling and analyzing complex data. Tensor methods have proven valuable in tasks such as dimensionality reduction, feature extraction, and data compression, underpinning advancements in machine learning, computer vision, signal processing, and remote sensing.

This thesis focuses on two challenges in tensor analysis: tensor recovery and tensor processing. Tensor recovery addresses the reconstruction of incomplete or corrupted tensors. …

Two Network Flow Problems: Volume Inequalities For Flow Polytopes Of Full Directed Acyclic Graphs; Optimal Additions To The Low-Stress Bike Network In Lexington, Kentucky, James F. Mcelroy Jan 2025

Two Network Flow Problems: Volume Inequalities For Flow Polytopes Of Full Directed Acyclic Graphs; Optimal Additions To The Low-Stress Bike Network In Lexington, Kentucky, James F. Mcelroy

Theses and Dissertations--Mathematics

This dissertation addresses two distinct problems related by their foundation in network flows. The first problem concerns volumes of flow polytopes of directed acyclic graphs with out-degree sequence (3,2,...,2,0). It is proved that there is an interchange operation on the edge set of these graphs that induces a partial order on the graphs isomorphic to a Boolean algebra, and that moving up through this partial order decreases (weakly) the volumes of the corresponding flow polytopes. This result is reinterpreted in the context of linear extensions for posets that are bipartite non-crossing trees.

The second problem develops a discrete optimization model …

Novel Generative And Language Model Architectures With Applications, Edison Mucllari Jan 2025

Novel Generative And Language Model Architectures With Applications, Edison Mucllari

Theses and Dissertations--Mathematics

This dissertation investigates novel architectures to address fundamental challenges in machine learning, particularly focusing on transformer models, recurrent neural networks, GAN and continual learning and their applications in natural language processing and computer vision. We propose the Neumann-Cayley Gated Recurrent Unit (NC-GRU), which leverages a Neumann series-based Scaled Cayley transformation to maintain orthogonal weight matrices, effectively mitigating exploding gradients problems while improving long-term memory retention across prediction tasks. We demonstrate the practical applications of NC-GRU by implementing our proposed architecture into an autoencoder to derive neural molecular fingerprints. Building upon these advancements, we turn our attention to the transformer architecture, …

Blow-Ups And Projectivized Toric Vector Bundles, Sara Church Jan 2025

Blow-Ups And Projectivized Toric Vector Bundles, Sara Church

Theses and Dissertations--Mathematics

This dissertation is set in the intersection of toric geometry, tropical geometry, and the theory of vector bundles. We focus on the geometry of projectivized toric vector bundles and their connections to Mori dream spaces, matroid theory, and tropical geometry. We generalize previous results on the quotient construction of Gonzalez, Hering, Payne, and Suss (GHPS) by introducing a new approach to describing the geometry of these bundles via associated blow-ups. Additionally, we examine tautological bundles arising from representable matroids and establish connections between their geometry and the wonderful compactification. Finally, we consider the case where Klyachko filtrations have maximal steps …

The Computational Algebra Of Conformal Blocks, Casey B. Hill Jan 2025

The Computational Algebra Of Conformal Blocks, Casey B. Hill

Theses and Dissertations--Mathematics

Conformal blocks are objects in quantum field theory that arise from conformal trans- formations, which are symmetries that preserve angles but not length. This aspect of conformal field theory has various interactions with algebraic geometry.

In this dissertation, we explore the underlying algebra and geometry of spaces and algebras of conformal blocks over SLn. We then use this information along with techniques from combinatorial commutative algebra, algebraic geometry, and representation theory to find a presentation of the algebra of SL4-conformal blocks. With this presentation, we then use computational methods to learn about some of the geometric properties of this algebra.

Applied Essays In Industrial Organization: Pricing In Short-Term Rental Markets And Policy Implications In Tobacco Consumption, Richard J. Applin Jan 2025

Applied Essays In Industrial Organization: Pricing In Short-Term Rental Markets And Policy Implications In Tobacco Consumption, Richard J. Applin

Theses and Dissertations--Economics

Economics 101 teaches that the interaction between supply and demand determines the prices and quantities consumers face. In econometric research, it is critical to remain aware of this canonical fact, as failure to do so can introduce bias in the estimation of economic parameters. This dissertation empirically demonstrates the importance of factoring in economic structure in three applied essays.

In the first essay, I estimate the impact of rating visibility on Airbnb pricing using a two-way fixed effects model. To do so, I primarily rely on an instrumental variables approach that I argue should identify a supply-side relationship. I provide …

Targeting Prmt5 In Inflammation And Cancer: A Nexus Of Endotoxin Signaling, Antigen Presentation And Immune Evasion., Jimmy James Msemo Jan 2025

Targeting Prmt5 In Inflammation And Cancer: A Nexus Of Endotoxin Signaling, Antigen Presentation And Immune Evasion., Jimmy James Msemo

Theses and Dissertations--Medical Sciences

Protein Arginine Methyltransferase 5 (PRMT5) is a member of PRMT family that controls both intrinsic and extrinsic oncogenic processes [1]. Protein arginine methyltransferase 5 (PRMT5) is a type II methyltransferase that exerts widespread influence over gene expression, splicing, DNA repair, and immune regulation through symmetric dimethylation of arginine residues on histone and non-histone proteins [2]. The addition of methyl groups induces gene silencing through producing dictatorial histone marks like H2AR3ne2s, H3R8me2s and H4R3mes [3], which act as epigenetic repressive marks on gene promoters. In non-histone proteins, PRMT5 can methylate and regulate transcription factor proteins such as p53, E2F1, and p65, …

Investigating Regulation And The Regulome Of The Nucleic Acid Binding Protein Spovg Within Borrelia Burgdorferi, Timothy C. Saylor Jan 2025

Investigating Regulation And The Regulome Of The Nucleic Acid Binding Protein Spovg Within Borrelia Burgdorferi, Timothy C. Saylor

Theses and Dissertations--Medical Sciences

Prior studies indicated Borrelia burgdorferi SpoVG protein was regulated, SpoVG binds specifically to a number of nucleic acids, and SpoVG binds to the non-variable section of the major virulence factor vlsE. Although a direct transcriptional activator or inhibitor was not elucidated, it is shown that SpoVG is regulated based on cell culture density independent of the growth rate of B. burgdorferi, indicating that SpoVG regulation is outside the scope of the alternative sigma factor RpoS. Using a dCas9 CRISPRi construct to target SpoVG resulted in protein expression trending towards upregulation of the BosR-RpoS regulon, and a marked decrease …

Cellular And Behavioral Consequences Of Psychedelic Drug Action In The Claustrum, Tanner L. Anderson Jan 2025

Cellular And Behavioral Consequences Of Psychedelic Drug Action In The Claustrum, Tanner L. Anderson

Theses and Dissertations--Neuroscience

Psychedelics are rapidly garnering research attention for their ability to successfully treat a variety of psychiatric diseases after one or a handful of treatments in recent clinical research. Among the conditions treated is substance use disorder (SUD), which afflicted 48.5 million (16.7%) Americans aged 12 and older in 2023 (NSDUH). As clinical trial results continue to show lasting positive effects of psychedelic psychotherapy, there remains an enormous gap in knowledge regarding how these drugs cause lasting changes in the brain to achieve these therapeutic effects. It has been suggested that psychedelics must induce rapid and long-lasting neuronal plasticity in order …

Leveraging Clinical Standards To Improve The Translational Relevance Of Therapies For Experimental Spinal Cord Injury, Aaron L. Silverstein Jan 2025

Leveraging Clinical Standards To Improve The Translational Relevance Of Therapies For Experimental Spinal Cord Injury, Aaron L. Silverstein

Theses and Dissertations--Neuroscience

Efforts to improve treatment of spinal cord injury (SCI) often use animals to develop effective therapeutics, intending to improve the survival and the quality of life of persons with SCI. Over half of all SCIs in the United States occur at the cervical level and often cause locomotor deficits and life-threatening breathing dysfunction. Thus, my dissertation is focused on this important patient population.

After beginning with a description of translational research and surveying SCI from a clinical standpoint, I turned to describe experimental models of cervical SCI and more detailed neuroimmunological findings relevant to my work. Then, I conducted a …

Immune Dynamics And B Cell Contributions To Neuroplasticity And Recovery After Stroke, Thomas A. Ujas

Theses and Dissertations--Neuroscience

This dissertation explores the dynamic interplay between the immune system and the brain across stroke and aging using clinical, post-mortem, and pre-clinical models. The immune system plays critical roles in shaping brain function, responding to injury, and mediating recovery. These studies aim to enhance our understanding of neuroimmune dynamics across spatial and temporal dimensions.

In the first part, we conducted longitudinal sampling of aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (aSAH) patients to track immune cell and cytokine changes at days 3, 5, 7, 10, and 14 post-stroke, with a focus on delayed cerebral ischemia (DCI), a common complication. We observed distinct temporal patterns, …

Understanding The Impact Of The Medicaid Expansion On Hospital Length Of Stay And Emergency Department Use In Kentucky, Cameron Bushling Jan 2025

Understanding The Impact Of The Medicaid Expansion On Hospital Length Of Stay And Emergency Department Use In Kentucky, Cameron Bushling

Theses and Dissertations--Epidemiology and Biostatistics

Three related analyses were performed to try to understand the immediate effects of Medicaid expansion on hospital systems in Kentucky. Medicaid expansion led to a large, sudden increase in the number of individuals eligible for various health care needs. This sudden increase in demand for health services lead to initial hypotheses regarding hospitals’ ability to handle this demand. The first analysis examined hospital average length of stay (LOS) using a linear mixed-effects model. Length of stay was modeled longitudinally between 2013 and 2015 to determine if significant changes in the slope of LOS could be detected after expansion (2014). Separate …

Changes In Cancer Diagnosis And Survival In The United States During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Justin T. Burus Jan 2025

Changes In Cancer Diagnosis And Survival In The United States During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Justin T. Burus

Theses and Dissertations--Epidemiology and Biostatistics

The COVID-19 Pandemic led to global societal disruptions as political leaders and public health authorities attempted to control the spread of the newly discovered SARS- CoV-2 virus. While these measures were designed to lessen morbidity and mortality from a novel pathogen, their impact was also felt in many other, often unintended ways. The purpose of this dissertation is to use cancer surveillance research methods to examine the association between COVID-19 Pandemic-related disruptions and changes in the normal diagnosis and care of cancer in the United States.

The first two studies of this dissertation analyzed reductions in cancer diagnoses in the …

Ideals And Idealization: Responding To Rawls And His Critics, Clayton J. Houdeshell Jan 2025

Ideals And Idealization: Responding To Rawls And His Critics, Clayton J. Houdeshell

Theses and Dissertations--Philosophy

In A Theory of Justice, John Rawls argues that any participant taking on the role as impartial spectator in his original position thought experiment would select “justice as fairness” as the most reasonable theory of justice to reorganize a basic structure’s system of institutions and public rules. In this dissertation it is my aim to outline seven criticisms of the Rawlsian account related to his method of ideal theory, the rationality and values of the impartial spectator, the instilment of a particular conception of the good and an aversion to non-liberal theories, and argue that each of them fail to …

Hannah Arendt As Hermeneutic Phenomenologist: Natality And The Miracle Of Philosophy, Andrew H. Marquis Jan 2025

Hannah Arendt As Hermeneutic Phenomenologist: Natality And The Miracle Of Philosophy, Andrew H. Marquis

Theses and Dissertations--Philosophy

I argue that Hannah Arendt practiced hermeneutic phenomenology in the canonical mode of her mentor, Martin Heidegger. Hermeneutic phenomenology is not a philosophical school defined by methods, results, or topics. It is a practice of transformative thinking by which we work through the burdens of who and how we have been towards the possibilities of who and how we could be. Heidegger, burdened by the scientism of his philosophical milieu, articulated this practice not by rejecting scientistic philosophies outright but by interpretively recovering their most promising tendencies.

Though seldom recognized as a hermeneutic phenomenologist, Arendt’s philosophical response to Nazism reveals …

Internalism, Externalism, And The Phenomenology Of Epistemic Justification, Steven Winterfeldt Jan 2025

Internalism, Externalism, And The Phenomenology Of Epistemic Justification, Steven Winterfeldt

Theses and Dissertations--Philosophy

This dissertation applies a phenomenological method of analysis to the dispute between analytic internalists and externalists regarding epistemic justification. Traditionally, the justification condition on knowledge has been interpreted as an internal condition, but the growing popularity of the externalist antithesis has placed internalism on the defensive. Ultimately, however, the dispute appears to have fallen into an impasse. I identify a set of four arguments or cases that, when taken together, prompt us to adopt a set of contradictory conclusions about the necessary and sufficient conditions for justified belief. Moreover, none of the analytic views of justification surveyed seem to be …

Harnessing Ethnicity For Effective Leadership: Reimagining Ethnic Politics As An Institutional Asset In Africa, Obaloluwa A. Aka Jan 2025

Harnessing Ethnicity For Effective Leadership: Reimagining Ethnic Politics As An Institutional Asset In Africa, Obaloluwa A. Aka

Theses and Dissertations--Political Science

Ethnic identity remains one of the most enduring forces shaping political behavior and leadership in Africa. Often viewed as a source of division, this study reframes ethnicity as an institutional asset capable of fostering accountability and enhancing leadership quality. Drawing on Afrobarometer Round 9 data from 35 African countries, the paper shows that ethnicity consistently predicts vote choice affirming its political salience. Rather than treating this as a democratic obstacle, the analysis demonstrates that when mediated through trusted traditional leaders, ethnic identity can strengthen satisfaction with democracy, trust in institutions, and perceptions of governance. Logistic regression models reveal that trust …
