Forced Migration And Women's Empowerment: Evidence From Rohingya Refugees, Adam Chilton, Katerina Linos, Anup Malani

Public Law and Legal Theory Working Papers

We explore a puzzle: high levels of satisfaction among forcibly displaced Rohingya women in informal camps in Hyderabad, India. Despite experiencing extreme poverty, loss of family and community, and high levels of gender-based violence after resettlement, both men and women—particularly women—report significant increases in satisfaction. We structured a representative household survey, employed a trusted female Muslim interviewer with deep ties to the local community, interviewed comparable numbers of men and women, and embedded list experiments in our questionnaire, to allow people to answer sensitive questions indirectly. We attribute this paradoxical finding to increased freedom post-resettlement, facilitated by economic, legal, and …

Remedies In The Officer Removal Cases, Samuel L. Bray Jan 2025

Remedies In The Officer Removal Cases, Samuel L. Bray

Public Law and Legal Theory Working Papers

When an officer challenges her removal by the president, what relief is available? This Article shows that the appropriate remedy will typically be a declaratory judgment. The interim relief question is harder. The suggestion here is that if an officer sues immediately to challenge her removal, there should be a presumption that the federal courts will prevent her removal during the pendency of the litigation. Otherwise, the presumption should be against interim relief. This approach is grounded in the principles of equity, and it prevents “flipping” back and forth in who occupies the office during the litigation.

Highest Risk Density Region For The Communication Of The Impact Of A Treatment Covariate On The Time-To-Event Distribution, Giacomo Biganzoli, Giuseppe Marano Phd, Patrizia Boracchi Phd Jan 2025

Highest Risk Density Region For The Communication Of The Impact Of A Treatment Covariate On The Time-To-Event Distribution, Giacomo Biganzoli, Giuseppe Marano Phd, Patrizia Boracchi Phd

COBRA Preprint Series

Analysis of time-to-event (TTE) data is central to clinical research, yet conventional summary measures like the hazard ratio (HR) and restricted mean survival time (RMST) present significant challenges. The HR is often misinterpreted, and its validity depends on the frequently violated proportional hazards assumption, while the RMST is highly sensitive to the choice of time horizon. This paper introduces two novel, assumption-free estimands to address these limitations: the Highest Risk Density Region (HRDR) and the Highest Net Risk Difference Region (HNRDR).

The HRDR identifies the narrowest time interval containing a pre-specified probability mass of events, directly answering the clinical question: …

Two-Eyed Seeing Into Shipwrecks: Maritime Microscopy In The South Carolina Lowcountry, Sara A. Rich, Kayla Raimondi, Hannah Herness Jan 2025

Two-Eyed Seeing Into Shipwrecks: Maritime Microscopy In The South Carolina Lowcountry, Sara A. Rich, Kayla Raimondi, Hannah Herness

Honors College Faculty Publications

By enhancing methods for how archaeology can contribute to the study of multi-species shipwrecks (or shipwreck ecology), this paper reconsiders the function of non-functioning ships and boats from anti-colonial and Native American perspectives. In partnership with the Waccamaw Indian People and the Indigenize SC Education Task Force, wood samples from several submerged wreck sites in a blackwater tidal river in the Lowcountry of South Carolina (USA) were analyzed for their archaeological potentials and for their potential to disclose the performance of individual sites within the underwater ecosystems of which they are a part. In turn, this information offers the opportunity …

The Reception Of Novella, Daughter Of The Bolognese Jurist Giovanni D'Andrea, In Christine De Pizan's City Of Ladies, Mary Anne Case

Public Law and Legal Theory Working Papers

Although the announced theme of Book 2, Chapter 36 of the Livre de la cité des dames is “against those men who claim it is not good for women to be educated,” a clear subtheme is filiation, since each of the three learned women on whom the chapter focuses – Hortensia, Novella, and Christine herself – is educated by her learned father. As it happens, the three women also have in common that they used their learning to defend their sex, but, interestingly, the chapter only discusses this “support for the cause of women” with respect to one of them, …

Algorithmic Selection Of Iconic Constitutions, Tejas Ramdas, Patrick Chung-Chia Huang, Nuno Garoupa, Martin T. Wells, Yun-Chien Chang, Tom Ginsburg

Public Law and Legal Theory Working Papers

This chapter examines the influence of pre-20th century constitutions using a quantitative approach, comparing expert-selected “iconic” constitutions with those identified algorithmically. In prior work, human experts identified four influential constitutions: the U.S. 1791, France 1791, Spain 1812, and France 1848. Here, we employ a genetic algorithm and Document Term Matrix (DTM) analysis to assess which one or four of 180 pre-1899 constitutions had the greatest textual impact on 581 post-1900 constitutions. Two criteria guide the selection: coverage and originality. Through iterative optimization, the algorithm identifies the most textually influential constitutions, allowing for a direct comparison with expert selections. This chapter …

Do Constitutional Unamendability Rules Make A Difference?, Adam Chilton, Mila Vertseeg Jan 2025

Do Constitutional Unamendability Rules Make A Difference?, Adam Chilton, Mila Vertseeg

Public Law and Legal Theory Working Papers

Leaders often try to amend constitutions to remove checks on their powers. To help protect against such democratic erosion, constitutional drafters and jurists sometimes restrict constitutional amendments by: (1) specifying in the constitutional text that certain clauses or principles can never be changed (“Eternity Clauses”); (2) granting apex courts the power to review the procedural validity of amendment processes (“Amendment Review”); or (3) developing judicial doctrines that block amendments that change the constitution’s nature (“Unamendability Doctrines”). But are unamendability rules actually associated with differences in countries’ levels of democracy? We argue that Eternity Clauses are likely to emerge in conditions …

Fear Of Balancing, William Baude Jan 2025

Fear Of Balancing, William Baude

Public Law and Legal Theory Working Papers

As a new Supreme Court majority settles into a new era of constitutional adjudication, the Justices will confront important methodological questions. How are they to go about interpreting the Constitution? In the Second Amendment case of United States v. Rahimi,1 many of the Justices wrote separately to debate broader methodological questions about constitutional interpretation. They expressed a shared desire to turn away from judicial “balancing” of interests in adjudicating constitutional rights in favor of founding-era understandings. That is a healthy instinct, but founding-era understandings may in truth lead to balancing, so maintaining an originalist approach and an opposition to balancing …

Fault And Cyberattack Diagnosis And Handling Via Large Language Models And State Prediction For Manufacturing And Quantum Systems, Jihan Abou Halloun

Wayne State University Dissertations

In the digitalization era and Smart Manufacturing, companies are harnessing the power of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) across multiple sectors, including process engineering optimization, process control and fault detection, to enhance efficiency and engineering decision making. Although AI and ML are widely used in anomaly detection and handling, there are still areas where it has been less explored. One of the major areas where AI’s potential in manufacturing needs to be characterized is with respect to the applications of large language models (LLMs) in manufacturing troubleshooting for fault/attack handling. A second major area where the potential of …

Development And Application Of Enhanced Sampling Techniques For Investigating Protein Interactions And Drug Discovery, Timothy Hasse Jan 2025

Development And Application Of Enhanced Sampling Techniques For Investigating Protein Interactions And Drug Discovery, Timothy Hasse

Wayne State University Dissertations

Understanding the dynamics of protein–protein and protein–ligand interactions is critical for elucidating biological function and guiding drug discovery. However, many such processes involve rare events and high energy barriers that are difficult to capture with conventional molecular dynamics (MD). Enhanced sampling techniques extend the reach of MD, enabling access to biologically relevant transitions and thermodynamic properties. In the first project, Gaussian accelerated MD (GaMD) was used to study the MEIG1–PACRG complex, a key regulator of sperm flagellar assembly. Simulations of wildtype and mutant MEIG1 (W50A, Y68A) revealed mutation-specific disruptions to the binding interface and identified druggable pockets, particularly on PACRG. …

Vision-Language Models For Future Image Caption Prediction: Methods, Applications, And Adversarial Vulnerabilities, Md Ishak Jan 2025

Vision-Language Models For Future Image Caption Prediction: Methods, Applications, And Adversarial Vulnerabilities, Md Ishak

Wayne State University Theses

Image captioning has traditionally focused on generating descriptions for individual static images. However, predicting future events from visual information is a fundamental challenge in this domain. While existing methods primarily describe current visual content, the ability to anticipate and generate captions for future events remains largely unexplored. We propose a novel approach for future caption prediction by leveraging the capabilities of Vision Transformer (ViT), Generative Pre-trained Transformer 2 (GPT-2), and Text-to-Text Transfer Transformer Model (T5) architectures.

Our method includes two complementary strategies: a two-stage pipeline where ViT-GPT2 generates captions for current images and T5 analyzes these captions to predict future …

Communication Interventions For Families With Parental Cancer With Dependents: Findings From A Scoping Review, Cinzia Caparso, Zoe Bowen, Sung Won Choi

Nursing Faculty Research Publications

Background: Since 2019, invasive cancer diagnoses in people younger than 50-years-old have increased by 12.8%, which impacts people of child-bearing age. Currently, interventions in families of parents with cancer are focused primarily on the parent with cancer communicating with their dependents about the initial cancer diagnosis or at end-of-life through in-person interventions. Limited web-based interventions have been developed to increase communication across all family members (e.g., parents with cancer with coparents; children with their parents) about communicating the impact of cancer on the individual’s and family’s well-being cross the cancer trajectory, a key gap to improved outcomes in this population. …

Deeds That Demons Would Be Ashamed Of: The Kkk, Justice, And Bystanders., Michael J. Aaron

The Gettysburg College Journal of the Civil War Era

Abstract: The Ku Klux Klan used a number of tactics to impact the judicial system of the South, tactics that can be seen in public interviews of Congress’s Report of the Joint Select Committee to Inquire into the Condition of Affairs in the Late Insurrectionary States. Intimidation was a powerful and widespread strategy of the KKK to create fear and inhibit the judicial system. Deception was also key to KKK activities, as many times KKK crimes went unprosecuted due to the secrecy of the offenders. Some popular support for what the KKK stood for and judges who were either ineffective …

Echoes Of Antiquity: The Romanticization Of The Classical World Through Architecture In The Old South, Cait Gurley

The Gettysburg College Journal of the Civil War Era

In the aftermath of the Civil War, the American South looked to the Ancient World as cultural and ideological model. Specifically, the Old South conceptualized Ancient Greece as a glorious land filled with honorable heroes who defended their home and way of life. Confederates utilized formal education in Classical studies to instruct the public on its ideologies. However, the economic downturn immediately following the Civil War forced Confederates to find another means of disseminating their ideologies to the public. Thus, in Reconstruction, ancient Greek-inspired architecture, as demonstrated in the Nashville Parthenon, acted as a vehicle for transporting ideologies. Yet, the …

“A Wise Ending To A Singularly Foolish Beginning”: An Analysis Of The Chiriqui Colonization Project, Hayden C. Strittmatter

The Gettysburg College Journal of the Civil War Era

Ambrose Thompson, a Pennsylvanian entrepreneur, aimed to profit from his title to coal-rich lands in Chiriqui by negotiating with several presidential administrations. Thompson’s plan during the Buchanan presidency centered on constructing naval bases and extracting resources for the navy. Although the Buchanan administration withheld their approval of the scheme, Thompson pounced on the opportunity to renew conversations about his colonization project with President Lincoln. This article examines how Thompson targeted Lincoln's racial and political ideologies in letters to launch the project and explores the factors that ultimately molded Lincoln’s decision to abandon the Chiriqui scheme during the Civil War.

Authoritarian Strategic Alignments In The Ukraine War: Russia, Iran, North Korea, And China, Yasin Çağlar Kaya, Yunus Emre Aydin

Journal of Strategic Security

This article explores how Russia, Iran, China, and North Korea have adapted their strategies during the Ukraine war. Rather than forming treaty-based alliances, they have turned to flexible partnerships shaped by sanctions evasion, arms transfers, and coordinated diplomacy. The framework draws on concepts such as authoritarian solidarity, hedging, norm subsidiarity, and wartime strategic learning, and the analysis focuses on four domains of cooperation: defense industries, finance, information operations, and institutional platforms. Empirical cases highlight Iran’s drone supplies, North Korea’s transfer of artillery and munitions, and China’s provision of economic lifelines, with Russia serving as the central coordinator. These relationships display …

Surveying New Battlegrounds: Ukraine And The Future Of Cognitive Warfare, Chad M. Briggs, Anita Tusor Jan 2025

Surveying New Battlegrounds: Ukraine And The Future Of Cognitive Warfare, Chad M. Briggs, Anita Tusor

Journal of Strategic Security

Cognitive warfare (CW) has emerged as a decisive battlespace in modern conflict, shifting the focus from physical terrain to the perceptions and resilience of societies. This article analyzes the Russian Federation's application of CW in Ukraine since 2013, contrasting it with the strategic concepts developed by the People's Republic of China (PRC). Russia's approach, rooted in Soviet-era maskirovka and reflexive control, integrates cyber operations, disinformation, and the use of non-state proxies, including private military companies, organized crime, and the Russian Orthodox Church, to destabilize adversaries and manufacture uncertainty. In response, Ukraine has demonstrated remarkable resilience through a whole-of-society mobilization, effectively …
