Synthesis Of Graphene Using Carbonaceous Materials In An Ultrasonic Reactor, Paul Chukwuma Ani
Doctoral Dissertations
The synthesis of high-quality graphene from sustainable carbonaceous feedstocks offers an avenue to reduce the environmental and economic costs associated with conventional graphite-based production. This research investigates the co-utilization of biochar and graphite as precursors for graphene fabrication in an ultrasonic reactor. Biochar was produced from biomass via downdraft gasification at 850 °C, yielding a high fixed-carbon, partially graphitized material with favorable surface area and porosity. Graphite, selected for its crystalline structure, was investigated with biochar to assess the influence of precursor composition on exfoliation efficiency, layer thickness distribution, and defect density. Ultrasonic-assisted liquid-phase exfoliation was employed, with process parameters …
Radio Frequency Wave Propagation Modeling Within Obstructed Underground Mining Environments For Effective Miner Localization During Mine Emergencies, Emmanuel Atta Antwi
Radio Frequency Wave Propagation Modeling Within Obstructed Underground Mining Environments For Effective Miner Localization During Mine Emergencies, Emmanuel Atta Antwi
Doctoral Dissertations
The reliability of underground wireless communication systems remains a significant challenge, particularly during emergencies when the mine environment becomes severely obstructed by debris, dust, and humidity. These environmental and geometric conditions result in significant attenuation of electromagnetic (EM) waves and multipath effects that undermine miner localization and rescue operations. Existing Vector Parabolic Equation (VPE) models are efficient for straight or mildly curved tunnels but fail to account for the random and obstructive conditions typically encountered during underground emergencies. This research develops a novel radio propagation model for EM wave behavior in underground mine drifts under geometrically obstructed conditions. The model …

BACKGROUND: Hyperkalemia, generally defined as serum potassium levels greater than 5.0 mEq/L, poses significant clinical risks, including cardiac toxicity and muscle weakness. Its prevalence and severity increase in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD), diabetes mellitus, and heart failure (HF), particularly when compounded by medications like angiotensin converting inhibitors, angiotensin receptor blockers, and potassium sparing diuretics. Hyperkalemia arises from disruptions in potassium regulation involving intake, excretion, and intracellular-extracellular distribution. In CKD and acute kidney injury, these regulatory mechanisms are impaired, leading to heightened risk. The management of chronic hyperkalemia presents a challenge due to the necessity of balancing effective cardiovascular …

New Vs. Reprocessed: A Scoping Review On Ilizarov Frame Reuse, James Hughes, Nicholas Obias, Dustin Prins, Amanda Killeen
School of Podiatric Medicine - Student Research
This review examines current literature regarding the viability of reused/reprocessed Ilizarov External Fixation (IEF) – with the end-goal of improving surgical options for complex limb pathologies in austere environments. We hypothesize this review will find no statistically significant difference between clinical outcomes of reused vs. new IEFs
IEF is an important but costly modality for complex limb pathologies, such as trauma, deformity, and nonunion (Chironga et al., 2023). Though effective, the cost of IEF is exacerbated by its single-use deployment (Chironga et al., 2023). A proposed cost-control measure is IEF reuse/reprocessing via (1) antiseptic pre-treatment, (2) structural stability assessment, (3) …

Thinking Artfully With Matter: A Posthuman Enquiry Into The Pedagogical Values Of Sketch-Booking., Melanie Potier
Thinking Artfully With Matter: A Posthuman Enquiry Into The Pedagogical Values Of Sketch-Booking., Melanie Potier
School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences Theses
Becoming attentive to art practices in terms of what they can do rather than what they are, the writing generates a more tentative-artful engagement with how sketchbooking processes engender more response-able relationship with the world. Exploring the relation between sensation and thought, this exemplification of the speculative potential of force and form, emerges as a powerful resistance to the constraints of the neoliberal education system. Practicing art as immanent doing, Erin Manning’s theory of incipient movement works to develop concepts, such as research-creation, event-time, artfulness and thought in motion, which find expression through the mundanities and ordinary occurrence of the …

The Idealised And The Profane Nun: The Image Of The Nun At The Fin-De-Siècle And Into The 1930s., Shannon Lewis
School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences Theses
This thesis examines the representation of nuns from the Fin-de-Siècle into the 1930s, in the popular medium of postcards, in art during the Modernist period, and throughout the early development of film. The thesis demonstrates how secularisation, rapid technological development, and political discourse during the selected era impacted the image of the nun. The images selected will be reviewed in the light of Christian iconography, highlighting how the nun is represented and understood as a cultural construct, rather than the reality of the nun. Imagery of nuns from this era seems to fall into two categories of idealisation and/or profanation …

In compliance with the ASTM guidelines, two lay-up configurations were constructed and tested for tensile and fatigue strengths. During the gait trials, the F-socket system was used to measure the interface pressure distribution. Stress, deformation, and safety factor responses under physiological loading conditions were simulated using complementary finite element analysis (FEA). With the yield strength, ultimate tensile strength, and fatigue life significantly improved in the reinforced group, the results demonstrated that the 10-layer laminate displayed superior mechanical performance relative to the 8-layer laminate; however, this …

Durian (Durio zibethinus Murr.), the "King of Fruits," has seeds that offer nutritional benefits, including high fiber for gut health and high protein for muscle growth. However, natural browning enzymes can limit its use in baking. This study investigates the comparative effects of blanching and steaming durations (5, 10, 15, 20, and 25 minutes) on the color and techno-functional properties of durian seed flour (DSF), providing an optimization-based approach rarely reported for this material.. Durian seeds were sourced from various stalls in Malaysia, washed, soaked in 0.6% sodium metabisulfite, and then blanched or steamed for for varying durations as …

Hospitals are expected to maintain operations during and after earthquakes, yet many facilities in the Philippines remain structurally and non-structurally vulnerable. This study evaluates the seismic vulnerability of selected public hospitals in Maguindanao Province, located near the Cotabato Trench and the Western Mindanao Fault, using the FEMA P-154 (3rd ed.) Rapid Visual Screening (RVS) Level-1 procedure. Four government hospitals, comprising 53 buildings constructed between 1980 and 2025, were assessed through a systematic visual inspection and review of available secondary records. Basic structural hazard scores were adjusted using FEMA score modifiers (performance modification factors) to compute Final Level-1 scores (Sₗ₁) and …
