Neural Topic Modeling Via Contextual And Graph Information Fusion, Jiyuan Liu, Jiaxing Yan, Chunjiang Zhu, Xingyu Liu, Qing Li, Yanghui Rao

Computer Science Faculty Publications

Topic modeling is a powerful unsupervised tool for knowledge discovery. However, existing work struggles with generating limited-quality topics that are uninformative and incoherent, which hindering interpretable insights from managing textual data. In this paper, we improve the original variational autoencoder framework by incorporating contextual and graph information to address the above issues. First, the encoder utilizes topic fusion techniques to combine contextual and bag-of-words information well, and meanwhile exploits the constraints of topic alignment and topic sharpening to generate informative topics. Second, we develop a simple word co-occurrence graph information fusion strategy that efficiently increases topic coherence. On three benchmark …

Vivir Para Descontarla: Maravall Y El Quijote (1948–1976), Aurora Hermida-Ruiz

Latin American, Latino and Iberian Studies Faculty Publications

Careful Whisper: Using Ecoaching And A Feedback Taxonomy To Provide Practicum Feedback For Preservice Teachers, Louise Alix Taylor, Ruben Fukkink, Ron Oostdam, Catherine Van Beuningen

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

Many institutes for initial teacher education struggle to organise effective performance feedback within the context of student teaching practicum. As the cooperating teachers who provide this feedback bring their individualised ontologies, feedback practices have been characterised by inconsistencies in the amount and quality of performance feedback. In this small-scale study carried out in the Netherlands, we explored affordances of eCoaching using a standardised feedback taxonomy. With the help of Bluetooth technology and the Synchronous Online Feedback Taxonomy, four teacher educators provided eCoaching to eight preservice teachers over the course of three lessons. We interviewed teacher educators and preservice teachers about …

While participants expressed professional commitments to inclusivity, their approaches often emphasized assimilation into Turkish norms, reflecting cultural …

Australian Education Research Organisation And Teacher Education, Bruce Haynes Jan 2025

Australian Education Research Organisation And Teacher Education, Bruce Haynes

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

The Australian Education Research Organisation was created to initiate, collate and disseminate reliable evidence-based research to the Australian school system. It uses the latest cognitive psychology to advocate the use of explicit instruction and phonics to lift outcomes of Australian schooling. These practices are reflected in the new ‘core content’ for Initial Teacher Education programs that were identified by the Teacher Education Expert Panel to be mandated in national accreditation processes for tertiary providers delivering initial teacher education. Mandating these practices is problematic and marks a further shift towards authoritarian processes in Australia.

INTRODUCTION: The use of electrical neuromodulation has often been limited to those with previous back surgery, peripheral neuropathy, and complex regional pain syndrome. Many patients with severe intractable low back pain were thought to be candidates for spinal cord stimulation (SCS), dorsal root ganglion stimulation, or peripheral nerve stimulation but did not meet the criteria. Recently, additional high-level data has supported the use of SCS in non-surgical low back pain (NSLBP), and United States Food and Drug Administration approval has been granted. The American Society of Pain and Neuroscience (ASPN) executive committee realized an unmet need to develop criteria for …

Wearable-Derived Heart Rate Variability Reveals Autonomic Dysfunction In Schizophrenia (Preprint), Alec J. Pupo, Stephanie H. Felgoise

Internal Medicine Resident Research

Autonomic dysfunction has long been implicated in schizophrenia, yet objective physiological markers remain underutilized in psychiatric research. Heart rate variability (HRV), a noninvasive measure of autonomic regulation, is conventionally derived from short electrocardiographic recordings. In this study, we tested whether continuous, wearable-derived HRV can identify physiologic alterations in schizophrenia-spectrum disorders. Using the NIH All of Us database, we analyzed second-level Fitbit heart rate data from 26 individuals with schizophrenia-spectrum diagnoses and 26 matched controls. Frequency-domain analyses focused on ultra-low frequency (ULF), very low frequency (VLF), and truncated low frequency (tLF) bands, given sampling constraints. Schizophrenia participants showed significantly reduced power …

Elevated Neutrophil-To-Lymphocyte Ratios In Schizophrenia: Insights From A Precision Medicine Cohort (Preprint), Alec J. Pupo, Connor J. Stinson, Chinwendu Madukwe, Stephanie H. Felgoise

Internal Medicine Resident Research

Systemic inflammation has been increasingly implicated in the pathophysiology of schizophrenia. The neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), a readily available marker of systemic inflammation, has not been thoroughly investigated in large, demographically-matched schizophrenia cohorts. Using data from the All of Us Research Program, we analyzed participants with schizophrenia (n = 396) matched to controls (n = 396) by sex, race, and age. NLR was calculated as the ratio of each participant’s median neutrophil count to median lymphocyte count across all available measurements, excluding extreme values (NLR > 7). Distribution normality was assessed using the Shapiro–Wilk test, and group differences were evaluated with the …
