Forecasting Hourly Police Call For Service Volumes: A Comparative Analysis Of Statistical, Machine Learning And Neural Network Models For Operational Planning., Patrick Duggan Jan 2025

Forecasting Hourly Police Call For Service Volumes: A Comparative Analysis Of Statistical, Machine Learning And Neural Network Models For Operational Planning., Patrick Duggan

ICT

Accurate demand forecasting is critical in operational settings where resource allocation and planning decisions depend on anticipated service volumes. Transactional systems that capture timestamped records provide valuable data sources for developing demand forecasts. This study examines hourly call volume forecasting using New Orleans police calls for service data, comparing the performance of statistical models, tree-based methods, and recurrent neural networks.

The research evaluates four primary modelling approaches: ARIMA models representing traditional statistical methods, XGBoost and Random Forest as a tree-based ensemble technique, and Gated Recurrent Units (GRUs) as deep learning alternatives. A naive seasonal model serves as the baseline benchmark. …

Predictive Analysis Of Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation Amoc And Its Climatic Implications On Ireland Using Advanced Machine Learning Techniques., Corey Whyte

ICT

The Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) plays a key role in regulating climate across the North Atlantic, including Ireland. This study analyses AMOC variability using RAPID, ODYSSEA, and MÉRA datasets to examine relationships between subsurface ocean conditions, sea surface temperatures, and air temperature. ARIMA/SARIMA models identify trends and correlations, while a Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) neural network forecasts future climate changes. Results show rising sea surface temperatures, moderate links between salinity and temperature, and seasonal air temperature patterns with a slight upward trend. The LSTM model outperforms traditional statistical approaches in capturing complex patterns, highlighting the value of machine learning …

Educational, School, and Counseling Psychology Faculty Publications

Objective:

Despite a decline in cigarette use, the dual use of cigarettes and electronic vaping products (EVPs) is a concerning pattern of nicotine consumption in the United States. Anxiety, a risk factor for tobacco use, may contribute to dual-use patterns; however, the association between daily anxiety symptoms and dual use of cigarettes and EVPs is not known. This study investigated associations between daily anxiety symptoms and dual cigarette and EVP use overall and by sex, race, and ethnicity.

Method:

Data are from the 2020–2022 National Health Interview Survey (n = 83,544). Multinomial logistic regression models, adjusted for sociodemographic factors, …

Sonic Photovoice And Critical Literacy: Listening To And Sounding What Is Me, What Is Not Me, And What Is Between, Alexander Chadwell

Theses and Dissertations--Curriculum and Instruction

This study examined sonic photovoice, a sound-based arts research method, as a tool for developing critical literacy in middle and high school students. Participants found and recorded sounds related to three categories, “what is me,” “what is not me,” and “what is between,” composed a sound collage using the sounds, and reflected on the experience. Framed by 4EA cognition, participatory sensemaking, and relational and everyday aesthetics, the study explored how listening and sounding shaped students’ conceptions of self and reality. Data from recordings, journals, and interviews suggest that the sonic engagement can foster relational, emergent understandings of self and …

Examining The Relationship Between Cognitive Auditory Processing And Sex Hormones, Trey A. Cline Jan 2025

Examining The Relationship Between Cognitive Auditory Processing And Sex Hormones, Trey A. Cline

Theses and Dissertations--Gerontology

Estrogen and progesterone have demonstrated modulatory effects on central auditory nervous system (CANS) function. Post-menopausal females often present to audiology clinics with complaints of difficulty hearing in background noise. However, these individuals often have normal peripheral hearing sensitivity on standard audiometry. Previous studies using the auditory brainstem response (ABR) in post-menopausal females demonstrated longer response latencies compared to their premenopausal counterparts, suggesting that sound does not transmit through the CANS as efficiently. However, to date, the available literature focused on sex hormones and the CANS relies mainly on objective measures, predominantly the ABR. The ABR reflects physiologic function through the …

A marginalized young person, often of a different physiognomy from those wielding power, sees the 'ivory tower' in her universe as a path to the learning, respect, power, and agency not available to her in her home environs. At their educational institutions, while their Blackness is not the basis for their outsider status, the Othering they experience mirrors that experienced by Black students at predominantly white universities in the real world. Theorizing the Colonial Role of Educational Institutions Following Thomas Macaulay's notorious' Minute on Education'(1835), educational systems have played a vital role in reaffirming the balance of power between the …

In May 2024, Florida and Alabama became the first states to ban the production and sale of lab-grown meat. Driven by a desire to protect the traditional agriculture industry, these new laws impose severe penalties on anyone found to have even stored lab-grown meat products in their home. The legislation follows in the footsteps of other laws aimed at offering the traditional agriculture industry additional protections. Florida, Alabama, and eleven other states already have “food disparagement laws” that make it easier to punish critics of traditional agriculture companies. Additionally, six states, including Alabama, currently have laws aimed at stifling undercover …

This Article specifically examines the implications of Al-assisted works, with a focus on text-to-image generators, such as Midjourney, that possess the ability to create detailed visual art from simple text prompts. The tools are not, however, limited to simple prompts. Users retain the ability to introduce greater complexity by specifying a host of variables that define the resulting image. Al-assisted art implicates significant legal rights and responsibilities. As to responsibilities: Can the image …

Rationalizing Rape: How Military Appellate Courts Get To Yes, Chris Cox, Ashley Fancher Jan 2025

Rationalizing Rape: How Military Appellate Courts Get To Yes, Chris Cox, Ashley Fancher

Scholarly Works

This study examines how military appellate courts rationalize overturning sexual assault convictions through qualitative analysis of opinions finding factual insufficiency. Drawing from cases between 2017-2020, concerning patterns are identified in judicial reasoning that reflect persistent rape myth acceptance despite decades of statutory reform. The analysis reveals that courts frequently question victim credibility based on delayed reporting, counterintuitive victim behavior, and continued contact with perpetrators - factors that trauma research has shown to be common among sexual assault survivors. Of particular concern is courts' treatment of incapacitation cases, where judges often acknowledge significant victim impairment yet find ways to question consent …
