Reimagining Education: Revisiting A Quantitative Study Of Naea Members, Hannah K. Sions
Reimagining Education: Revisiting A Quantitative Study Of Naea Members, Hannah K. Sions
Journal of Social Theory in Art Education
In 2020, (anti)racism, implicit bias, and white supremacy were topics that were becoming highlighted in school systems across the country (Krauth, 2021). However, as stay-at-home orders relaxed, the same educators who were regarded as heroes at the beginning of the pandemic were suddenly criticized for trying to teach anti-racism, equity, and other systemic social issues (Graham, 2021). The inability to acknowledge uncomfortable truths about history has highlighted a major shortcoming of education in the United States: we can continue to teach in ways that we know oppress students from the Global Majority or we can reexamine education and move towards …
Dialogic Praxis And Racialized Embodiment In Art Education, Emily J. Hood, Sarah T. Travis, Kathy Brown, David Herman Jr., Injeong Yoon-Ramirez
Dialogic Praxis And Racialized Embodiment In Art Education, Emily J. Hood, Sarah T. Travis, Kathy Brown, David Herman Jr., Injeong Yoon-Ramirez
Journal of Social Theory in Art Education
In this paper, the authors discuss how conversations on racial embodiment can be dialogic praxis that builds solidarity and moves towards anti-racist pedagogy. For the conversations, the authors met via videoconference on several occasions to discuss their experiences on the topic of racialized embodiment from their varied sociocultural perspectives and considered implications for visual art teaching, learning, and research. They recorded the audio and video of these conversations and collaged portions of the transcripts of these talks together to present a single curated conversation that serves as primary content for this paper. The decision to “speak” this article into existence …
The Radical Pedagogical Imagination Of Collapse: Refusing Art Education As Prestige Property, Courtnie N. Wolfgang, Hannah K. Sions
The Radical Pedagogical Imagination Of Collapse: Refusing Art Education As Prestige Property, Courtnie N. Wolfgang, Hannah K. Sions
Journal of Social Theory in Art Education
Halberstam’s (2022) aesthetic and semiotic reimagining of collapse explores the concept of prestige property- a property that has been designed to suit the desires of investors, architects, and designers, not the needs of those inhabiting the spaces. In this manuscript, we discuss the aesthetics of collapse as Halberstam defines them, extrapolating his examples and providing what might be understood as “(arts) educational collapse”. We employ Halberstam’s concept of the prestige property as a metaphor for the arts and education: that formal educational spaces in the United States of America are prestige properties, created for political and social desires of oppression …
Interaction Between Structural And Cultural Barriers In Relation To The Mental Health Service Usage Of Latino Young Adults, Mia Rubino
Psychology Honors Papers
The inaccessibility of mental health services among ethnic minority populations is often attributed to neatly categorized “cultural” factors or “structural” factors, as is seen in research regarding underutilization of such services among Latino populations. While these terms seek to provide clarity for complex human experiences, in natural occurrence, cultural identity and societal structure are inextricable from each other, and must be studied as such. The present study sought to examine the possible interaction effects of structural and cultural barriers on the subsequent help-seeking behaviors of Latino young adults in a qualitative investigation. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with eight individuals of …
Development Of A Stable Isotope Method To Measure Protein Fractional Synthesis Rate In Equine Skeletal Muscle, Antoinette E. Foliart
Development Of A Stable Isotope Method To Measure Protein Fractional Synthesis Rate In Equine Skeletal Muscle, Antoinette E. Foliart
Theses and Dissertations--Animal and Food Sciences
Muscle mass is regulated by the balance between muscle protein synthesis and degradation. Previous research in horses has shown that the signaling pathway that regulates protein synthesis is upregulated with increasing protein intake; however, whether this corresponds to an increase in muscle protein synthesis rates had not been previously explored. The objective of this study was to develop an isotopic method to measure muscle protein fractional synthesis rate (FSR) in horses following graded protein intake. Eight mature Thoroughbred horses were studied using a randomized cross-over design. Horses consumed meals containing 0 (No), 0.125 (Low), 0.25 (Med), or 0.5 (High) g …
Chapter 11 Mediation, Laura N. Coordes
Chapter 11 Mediation, Laura N. Coordes
Emory Bankruptcy Developments Journal
Mediation has become an increasingly popular and powerful tool in chapter 11 reorganizations, especially in large cases. Despite its widespread and growing use, mediation in chapter 11 is under-studied. This Article begins to fill this gap in the literature by critically assessing mediation, a form of largely private dealmaking, in the context of a bankruptcy process that is supposed to be largely public. The Article begins by discussing mediation’s popularity within the bankruptcy process before turning to a review of issues that have arisen in recent cases, providing a critical assessment of mediation’s promise and perils. In particular, the Article …
The Walking Debt: How Zombie Pacs Threaten Federal Elections And Proposals For Reform, Ariel Bagley
The Walking Debt: How Zombie Pacs Threaten Federal Elections And Proposals For Reform, Ariel Bagley
Emory Bankruptcy Developments Journal
Zombie political action committees are political entities that are legally alive but whose candidate the committee is attached to has either died or functionally retired from politics. These committees form as a byproduct of skewed incentives in campaign finance law. The Federal Election Commission (“FEC”) is tasked with enforcing campaign finance laws and terminating political committees. However, it is structurally ineffective at enforcing those laws. Congress, meanwhile, has defunded the FEC and is poorly incentivized to improve its efficacy, as any Congressperson may one day benefit from having a zombie committee. When zombies do form, they are almost impossible to …

This study investigates the performance of a hydroxyethyl cellulose (HEC)–based biopolymer gel for fracture conformance control in high-temperature geothermal reservoirs using a statistically driven experimental framework. Laboratory core-flooding experiments were conducted on fractured limestone and sandstone samples from the Deadwood Formation under controlled thermal and chemical conditions, with temperatures reaching 160 °C. The effects of temperature, gel formulation salinity, and lithology on key performance indicators—including residual resistance factor (RRF), resistance factor (RF), gel extrusion pressure gradient (GEPG), and heat retention—were quantified. Response Surface Methodology (RSM) was applied using Minitab to capture variable interactions and develop predictive models for gel behavior …

Axiomatic Shifting Paradigms: Wittgenstein’S Language-Games, Gödel’S Incompleteness Theorem, Language, Law, And The Limits Of Formalism, Charles Edward Andrew Lincoln Iv
University of Arkansas at Little Rock Law Review
This Article shows how Ludwig Wittgenstein’s idea of “language-games” and Kurt Gödel’s Incompleteness Theorems mark the outer limits of legal formalism and other leading interpretive theories—textualism, originalism, and purposivism. It begins by tracing Wittgenstein’s progression from a “picture theory” of language to the view that social context drives meaning more than any simple correspondence between words and reality. Gödel’s work on formal systems, suggesting that mathematics—long held as the pinnacle of logical certainty—itself cannot be both consistent and complete, reinforces the notion that purely “logical” approaches cannot capture the full range of linguistic and social nuances at play in law. …

A Critical Perspective On Formative Assessment Mandates, Joshua M. Silverstein
A Critical Perspective On Formative Assessment Mandates, Joshua M. Silverstein
University of Arkansas at Little Rock Law Review
Formative assessment is a hot topic in legal education. Numerous commentators maintain that such assessment improves student learning of legal skills and content. Many law schools have adopted formative assessment requirements. And the American Bar Association recently proposed changing law school accreditation standards to mandate formative assessment in the first year. This essay challenges these trends. There is a paucity of evidence that formative assessment enhances learning among law students. Much of the broader assessment literature has limited relevance in legal education. And conducting formative assessment entails serious costs that are frequently overlooked by its proponents. In sum, the evidence …

Evaluating The Effectiveness Of Simplified Education On Respiratory Infections For South Asian Immigrants Parents Of Children 3 Months To 18 Years Of Age., Iman Khanam
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
BACKGROUND: Health literacy has been shown to be a major contributing factor to an individual’s ability to manage symptoms and therefore their health outcomes as well. Data demonstrates that those of South Asian descent tend to lack the health literacy necessary to manage health. Respiratory infections are one of the most common childhood illnesses. It is important that parents understand how to appropriately manage their child’s symptoms.
METHODS: A pre-intervention questionnaire was obtained from participating parents prior to the intervention. The post-intervention questionnaire was obtained at least one week after the intervention. A paired t-test analysis was conducted based on …

Patient Autonomy And Treatment Adherence In Esrd:A Study Of Provider & Nurse Perspectives On Barriers And Choices, Christina A. Larkin
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
Missed dialysis treatments are commonly attributed to barriers such as transportation, mental health challenges, and limited health literacy. However, emerging evidence highlights the complexity of adherence behaviors, including psychological, relational, and ethical dimensions that remain underexplored—particularly from the perspective of dialysis providers and nurses. This qualitative descriptive study examined how nephrology providers and dialysis nurses perceive barriers to adherence, with a focus on patient autonomy, motivation, and decisionmaking.

Asia-Pacific Intellectual Property Management and Innovation Book Series
This policy brief aims to provide a comprehensive examination of the regulation of generative artificial intelligence (AI) in academic works, with a primary objective of establishing best practices and strategies for academic institutions, government entities, and civil society in emerging economies, notably the Philippines. It entails a review of the existing regulatory frameworks in various governments and academic institutions while also addressing challenges faced in regulating generative AI, particularly focusing on the intellectual property aspects related to the use of generative AI tools, such as ChatGPT, in academic research content or scholarly works output from such use of tools. The …

Unlocking The Unknown: Exploring Ai Patents, Inventive Step With Cases And Recent Developments, Başak Ayşe Ortak
Asia-Pacific Intellectual Property Management and Innovation Book Series
Artificial intelligence is reshaping the field of patent law in transformative ways, particularly when it comes to the concept of inventive step. For instance, for a patent to be granted, the invention must demonstrate an inventive step, which will be explored here (German Patent Act, § 4; European Patent Convention, art. 56(1)). Furthermore, as artificial intelligence (AI) becomes increasingly involved in technological advancements, figuring out how to apply this criterion to AI patents is becoming more complex. This study looks into the challenges of defining what counts as an inventive step in AI-related inventions and evaluates whether current patent standards …

Executive Order 14330: A Solution In Search Of A Problem, Edward A. Zelinsky
Cardozo Law Review de•novo
President Trump’s Executive Order 14330 proclaims its determination to “democratiz[e] access to alternative investments for 401(k) investors.” Among its other provisions, Executive Order 14330 requires the Department of Labor (DOL) to “clarify the duties that a fiduciary owes to plan participants.” Such clarification shall “relieve the regulatory burdens and litigation risk that” allegedly deny 401(k) participants access to alternative investments. However, the order states, DOL’s administrative guidance on alternative investments must be “consistent with applicable law.”

The Service’S Overgenerous Tax Treatment Of Crowdfunding, Jeffrey H. Kahn
Cardozo Law Review de•novo
The Internal Revenue Service released a fact sheet that defines crowdfunding as a method to raise money on websites by soliciting contributions from a large number of people. This article considers how crowdfunding is treated for tax purposes and argues that, contrary to the fact sheet's determination, all donations collected by commercial websites should be income to the recipient.

Student Retention And Persistence At Jccc, Eve Blobaum
Student Retention And Persistence At Jccc, Eve Blobaum
Sabbatical Projects
Community colleges enroll diverse student populations with varied academic preparation, socioeconomic backgrounds, and personal circumstances. These factors contribute to lower retention and persistence rates compared to four-year institutions. This work adds to the research on community college retention and persistence by attempting to identify factors related to student retention and persistence at Johnson County Community College, a large suburban community college in the American Midwest. Using 21 variables drawn from Community College Survey of Student Engagement data collected online in Spring 2021, a sample of 289 students was analyzed to identify variables with a statistically significant (p < 0.05) association with next-term retention, fall-to-fall retention, or persistence. The findings reveal that only credit hours completed is consistently associated with retention and persistence. While credential-seeking and financial aid are associated with next-term retention (p = .002 and p < .001, respectively), neither was associated with long-term outcomes. Age group was associated with fall-to-fall retention (p = .043) and persistence (p = .031) but not with next-term retention. Additionally, while being married and living with dependent children were associated with persistence (p = .005 and p = .002, respectively), neither was related to either of the retention measures. These results underscore the complexity of retention dynamics and highlight the need for further research to validate the utility of the CCSSE instrument at the institutional level and explore whether these results are anomalous.

A Critical Approach To Analyzing And Addressing Worldview-Based Cultural Conflict Between Indigenous Peoples And Western Science In Education And Research, Deborah H. Williams
Sabbatical Projects
Intercultural conflict exists in science education and research, I argue as a result of differences between the Western scientific worldview and the Indigenous worldview. Native Americans are the most underrepresented group in STEM, and this has been the case, in my personal experience for over two decades. Western science is not universal or acultural, Indigenous peoples have their own ways of knowing founded on different philosophical assumptions and recognizing metaphysical phenomena and explanations that are rejected by Western science and the positivist/post-positivist paradigm. Through the power of colonial privilege, scientists, science departments, and science disciplines have been able to erect …
Unconstitutional “Detours”, Zachary R. Cormier
Unconstitutional “Detours”, Zachary R. Cormier
Missouri Law Review
There is no more important context to have clear Fourth Amendment search and seizure limitations than the traffic stop. “Police pull over more than 50,000 drivers on a typical day,” resulting in seizures of “more than 20 million motorists every year.” The frequency of traffic stops is compounded by the malleability of their potential legal justifications. In Whren v. United States, the Supreme Court held that a pretextual traffic stop motivated by a desire to investigate a vehicle’s occupants for unrelated criminal activity (for which the officer does not yet have probable cause) does not violate the Fourth Amendment so …

Cognitive Decline And The U.S. Presidency: The Case Of Joe Biden, Mark Fisher, Sandy Sanbar
Health Matrix: The Journal of Law-Medicine
This article examines the intersection of cognitive health, medical ethics, and constitutional governance through the lens of President Joe Biden’s medical history and recent cognitive performance. Highlighting the absence of formal neurocognitive testing protocols for presidential candidates and sitting Presidents, it raises critical questions about transparency, accountability, and the statutory and ethical obligations of medical professionals serving in political contexts. The paper discusses Biden’s stroke history, neurosurgical interventions, and subsequent lack of documented cognitive assessments, emphasizing the implications for public trust and the constitutional duty to ensure an executive fit for office. It advocates for the implementation of standardized, objective …
