A Comparative Study Of Classical And Deep Feature Learning Methods For Prediction Of User Request Patterns For Cloud Resources, Swaroopa Ammenadka
A Comparative Study Of Classical And Deep Feature Learning Methods For Prediction Of User Request Patterns For Cloud Resources, Swaroopa Ammenadka
Theses
Large-scale cloud storage systems managing petabyte-scale data face cost challenges due to sparse, irregular file access patterns. Traditional attribute-based methods often fail to capture dynamic temporal and event-driven behaviors. This thesis compares classical statistical and deep learning approaches for predicting file access patterns using five months of real-world access logs from Tsinghua University’s FTP server (2.9 million events). Five forecasting models—ARIMA, SARIMA, Exponential Smoothing, Prophet, and 1D CNNs—are evaluated across 1,161 files. A novel hybrid clustering method combines time series similarity with forecasting accuracy metrics. Results show ARIMA significantly outperforms deep learning (2.3× better accuracy: 0.0188 vs. 0.036 MAE) for …

The Ironically Important Role Of Incidental Take Authorizations In Whale Conservation, Alexander Carbaugh-Rutland, Jessica Owley, Kenneth Broad
Articles
The late 1970s and early '80s saw a regime shift in wildlife protection under the Marine Mammal Protection Act (MMPA) and the Endangered Species Act (ESA). That shift may be impeding the recovery of cetaceans (whales, dolphins, and porpoise species) in ways that are yet underexplored. As enacted, the MMPA and ESA established a conservation framework designed to reduce, to the fullest extent possible, "takes" of protected species. Between 1978 and 1982, a series of amendments to both statutes introduced a complex web of incidental take authorizations designed to ensure Congress' initial push for wildlife conservation would not impede economic …
The Fox Effect? Implications Of Recruiting Corporate Law To Combat Misinformation, Lili Levi
The Fox Effect? Implications Of Recruiting Corporate Law To Combat Misinformation, Lili Levi
Articles
In 2023, Fox Corporation settled U.S. Dominion’s defamation action over Fox News’ broadcast of false election fraud claims after the 2020 presidential election for the staggering sum of $787.5 million. Now, a shareholder derivative action is pending in Delaware against the company’s board of directors for breach of state corporate law fiduciary oversight duties for their failure to prevent such defamatory programming. Beyond the specifics of the case, this development portends the emergence of a new politico-legal strategy—using corporate governance requirements as a weapon to promote press accountability and combat misinformation in public discourse. The question addressed in this Essay …

Winding Authority: Consent By Registration And The Legal Singularity, Christina Frohock
Winding Authority: Consent By Registration And The Legal Singularity, Christina Frohock
Articles
More than forty years ago, the Pennsylvania legislature enacted a uniquely broad and explicit statute directed at out-of-state corporations: registration as a foreign corporation constitutes consent to general personal jurisdiction in the Commonwealth. Pennsylvania's consent-by-registration statute has faced Fourteenth Amendment due process challenges in state and federal courts alike, rising all the way to both the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania and the U.S. Supreme Court. This Article first tracks the myriad challenges to the Pennsylvania statute, culminating in the U.S. Supreme Court's opinion in Mallory v. Norfolk Southern Railway Co. in 2023. The Article then argues that the statute's zigzagging …
An Archaeology Of The Red River Of The North, Michael G. Michlovic
An Archaeology Of The Red River Of The North, Michael G. Michlovic
Digital Press Books
An Archaeology of the Red River of the North offers an expansive survey of the indigenous cultures and peoples in the region of the Red River from the recession of Lake Agassiz around 9000 years ago to the intrusion of the Europeans. Beginning with an overview of the practice of regional archaeology and a justification for its pursuit, Michael Michlovic uses a traditional culture-historical sequence as a framework to incorporate archaeological studies from the late nineteenth century to the present time. Relevant research in fields such as ethnohistory, ethnography, radiometric dating, paleoecology, and geomorphology are used throughout the presentation. Dozens …

Supporting The Development Of Emotion Regulation For Engagement In Occupation, Alexis Karen Smith
Supporting The Development Of Emotion Regulation For Engagement In Occupation, Alexis Karen Smith
Occupational Therapy Capstones
Purpose: Many children with mental, behavioral, and neurodevelopmental health conditions internalize and externalize symptoms of anxiety, depression, and anger at higher rates compared to children without these conditions (Tajik-Parvinchi, 2021). Difficulties with emotion regulation may lead to heightened experiences of symptoms from mental, behavioral, and neurodevelopmental health conditions (Tajik-Parvinchi, 2021). Occupational therapy practitioners can support children with emotional dysregulation by using evidence-based best practices. The identified problem is the application of evidence-based emotion regulation evaluation and interventions to support children with difficulty in emotion regulation and their caregivers. The challenge of implementing evidence-based emotion regulation services is limited research and …
Benefits Of Nature-Based Play For Children: An Educational Resource For Parents, Kaitlyn Peterson
Benefits Of Nature-Based Play For Children: An Educational Resource For Parents, Kaitlyn Peterson
Occupational Therapy Capstones
Background: In recent years, children’s use of technology has increased, decreasing the time they spend playing in natural contexts and time spent building the parent-child relationship. The lack of time spent in outdoor contexts has negative influences on the child’s overall health and well-being. The time a child spends with their parent is vitally important for a child’s development, view of the world, and sense of belonging. Parents assist children throughout development by supporting their understanding of themselves and the world, along with supporting the child’s ability to communicate with their parents. Interactions with technology, particularly overuse, can influence a …
Increasing Occupational Therapy Student Preparedness For Level Ii Fieldwork Experiences In Hand Therapy, Claire Meyer
Increasing Occupational Therapy Student Preparedness For Level Ii Fieldwork Experiences In Hand Therapy, Claire Meyer
Occupational Therapy Capstones
Background: A level II fieldwork experience is essential within occupational therapy programs as it allows occupational therapy students to apply what they have learned in the classroom to real-life practice. Students need to complete level II fieldwork to graduate, become practicing therapists, and grow the field of occupational therapy. However, many practitioners, particularly those specializing in hand therapy, hesitate to accept students for fieldwork placements. Barriers reported by hand therapy practitioners include a lack of student knowledge, preparation, and clinical skills (Short et al., 2017; Valdes et al., 2022). Hand therapy settings' rapid pace and demanding nature require students to …
Occupational Therapy Best Practices In Partial Hospitalization Programs, Mattea June Johnson
Occupational Therapy Best Practices In Partial Hospitalization Programs, Mattea June Johnson
Occupational Therapy Capstones
Introduction: Occupational therapy practitioners play a crucial role on the care team in partial hospitalization programs (PHP). Occupational therapy practitioners are a key member of the care team due to their profession’s unique view of the person and goal of supporting them in their valued occupations. Occupational therapy practitioners have training in psychosocial and mental health interventions that enable those with mental illness to engage in meaningful everyday activities. Practitioners must be equipped with the current best practice standards to support participants to engage in recovery and wellness through occupation. With the growing need for mental and behavioral services and …

Specialized Knowledge Of Sensory Interventions For Sensory Function, Cassidy Kay Filson
Occupational Therapy Capstones
Purpose: Between 5%-16.5% of the general population are estimated to have a form of atypical sensory reactivity (Ahn et al., 2004). Atypical sensory reactivity or atypical sensory processing is described as when the brain processes sensory input differently than it typically would (Ark Support Coordination, n.d.). The rates of atypical sensory reactivity increase in children with additional diagnoses such as autism (ASD), developmental delays and disabilities, and neurodivergent children (AOTA, 2023). Sensory processing and integration difficulties negatively impact the quality and quantity of a child’s occupational participation, as symptoms often make various occupations more difficult for the child to participate …

Unlock Upper Extremity Rehabilitation: Interprofessional Collaboration Between Ot Hand Therapy And Surgical Teams, Collin Brown
Occupational Therapy Capstones
Background: In the journey to recovery from upper extremity injuries, outpatient hand therapists who are certified as occupational therapists (OT) play a crucial role in restoring patients' independence and functionality, both before and after surgical intervention. Researchers identified main themes experienced by participants who had acquired an upper extremity injury and were post-operation, such as functional challenges in managing conditions, difficulties in everyday life, coping strategies, differing expectations, and the impact of information on daily life (Hansen et al, 2024). In all of these areas identified, an OT hand therapist is able to identify and facilitate improvements pre- and post-surgery …
Predictive Modeling For Multiphase Flow Boiling Heat Transfer By Integrating Computational Fluid Dynamics And Machine Learning Approaches, Mohamed Elfaham
Predictive Modeling For Multiphase Flow Boiling Heat Transfer By Integrating Computational Fluid Dynamics And Machine Learning Approaches, Mohamed Elfaham
Theses and Dissertations
The heat transfer process in multiphase flow systems becomes essential forindustrial applications and when phase change occurs. The heat transfer coefficients become more efficient during boiling and condensation processes when compared to single-phase fluid flow. The design of thermal systems requires knowledge about these coefficients together with their essential parameters. This study evaluates flow boiling heat transfer coefficients for low-global warming potential refrigerants which include pure ethanol and propane (R-290) and R- 600 and R-600A. The experimental database included more than 25 independent studies that covered various operating conditions and channel sizes and fluid properties. Existing empirical correlations were evaluated, …

Age Segmentation In The Life Coaching Industry: A Needs-Based Approach, Timothy Reisenwitz
Age Segmentation In The Life Coaching Industry: A Needs-Based Approach, Timothy Reisenwitz
Atlantic Marketing Journal
Life coaching is the second-fastest-growing industry in the world. Most previous research has used a results-based approach with relatively small sample sizes. The current research uses a needs-based approach to identify whether older or younger consumers are better candidates for a life coaching session or program. A hard-copy questionnaire used existing scales based on industry indicators to identify viable life-coaching clients. A multivariate analysis of covariance (MANCOVA) was used to analyze the data, with gender as the covariate or moderating variable. Results showed that younger consumers are generally better candidates for life coaching, while gender was only significant for one …
Buying Green On A Student Budget: How Sustainability Shapes Gen-Z Grocery Habits, Tyler Martin, Diane R. Edmondson, Lucy Matthews
Buying Green On A Student Budget: How Sustainability Shapes Gen-Z Grocery Habits, Tyler Martin, Diane R. Edmondson, Lucy Matthews
Atlantic Marketing Journal
Sustainability is increasingly prioritized by consumers, but concerns arise about whether Gen-Z college students with limited financial means translate sustainable attitudes into purchasing behaviors. This study surveyed 496 undergraduate students at a southeastern public university to assess attitudes, motivations, and actions regarding sustainable grocery shopping. Results reveal strong environmental concerns among students but a notable gap between beliefs and purchasing behaviors, attributed mainly to financial constraints. Gender, political affiliation, and religious affiliation significantly influenced sustainable behavior. Managerial implications and future research directions are discussed.

From Backlash To Brand Loyalty: How Self-Congruity And Generation Shape Consumer Intentions After A Failed Influencer Campaign, Dexter L. Purnell, Kimberly V. Legocki, Steven R. Barnes, Jessica Chapman
Atlantic Marketing Journal
This study examines consumer responses to corporate social advocacy (CSA) surrounding Bud Light’s partnership with transgender influencer Dylan Mulvaney. We fielded a cross-sectional survey of U.S. beer drinkers (N = 386) measuring actual and ideal self-congruity, generational cohort, and purchase intention. Using PROCESS Model 4 with bootstrap confidence intervals, we tested whether self-congruity mediates the relationship between generation and purchase intention. Self-congruity strongly predicted purchase intention, and indirect effects of generation via both actual and ideal self-congruity were statistically significant. Conditional (contrast-specific) indirect effects were observed only for Gen X, indicating cohort-specific pathways from CSA to purchase intention through identity …

Omnichannel Retailing: An Exploratory Study Of Limiting The Customer Journey In A Digital-First Context, Terence L. Holmes, Edward C. Brewer, Elizabeth Patterson
Atlantic Marketing Journal
A recent retail trend is the rise of “digital-first” firms, where their merchandise is sold primarily via online efforts. In this exploratory study we describe our investigation of the customer journey for a digital-first seller of cosmetics and personal care products. We collected qualitative and quantitative data from a customer survey and follow-up interviews. Results indicate that personal connections and actual product use are the two most important touchpoints customers consider in first discovering the seller and then building a relationship with the brand. We describe practical applications of the findings and suggest ideas for future research.

Podcast Advertising And Its Role In Higher Education Marketing, Mark D. Cistulli, Jason L. Snyder
Atlantic Marketing Journal
Podcast advertising has become an important component in marketing campaigns for organizations to reach their target audiences. With the explosion of popularity of podcasts, so too does the opportunity for marketers to promote their products and services. In this study, we are focusing on the impact of a graduate program ad on attitudes and behavioral intentions associated with the university in the ad. Participants were exposed to part of a podcast with the ad embedded mid-roll and then responded to a survey about their evaluation of the ad and subsequent intentions to consider attending graduate school at the university advertised. …

The project also addressed AACSB’s emphasis on societal impact and aligned with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals by promoting emotional well-being and civic …
“One Step Too Many”: Deference In Bruen, Loper Bright, And Rahimi, Haley Proctor
“One Step Too Many”: Deference In Bruen, Loper Bright, And Rahimi, Haley Proctor
SMU Law Review
This Article examines the Supreme Court’s rejection of deferential twostep tests in New York State Rifle & Pistol Ass’n v. Bruen and Loper Bright Enterprises v. Raimondo. Prior to these decisions, Second Amendment and administrative law doctrines limited courts’ interpretive role at Step One in order to create space for regulatory judgments to which courts would defer at Step Two. Bruen and Loper Bright rejected this approach, reclaiming courts’ authority to ascertain legal norms and (less emphatically) to apply them to concrete disputes without deferring to regulators.
Although it was decided the same term as Loper Bright, many …
Rahimi And The Future Of (The Rest Of) The Protection Order Prohibition, Bonnie Carlson
Rahimi And The Future Of (The Rest Of) The Protection Order Prohibition, Bonnie Carlson
SMU Law Review
In the summer of 2024, the Supreme Court considered United States v. Rahimi. Scholars and lawyers watched with bated breath to see how the court would interpret and apply the foundation-shifting Second Amendment test it established in New York State Rifle & Pistol Ass’n v. Bruen two years earlier. Ultimately, the Court upheld the federal law which temporarily bans some protection order respondents from possessing firearms. But the Court provided little in the way of additional guidance that lower courts desperately needed as evidenced by the disparate outcomes on gun cases nationwide following Bruen. Rather, the Court opted …

Second Amendment Originalism, “General Law,” And Rahimi’S Two-Fold Failure, Nelson Lund
SMU Law Review
“A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.”
New York State Rifle & Pistol Association v. Bruen (2022), set out a bold new standard of review for Second Amendment cases. The Court rightly repudiated the intermediate-scrutiny approach adopted by the circuit courts after District of Columbia v. Heller (2008). Bruen purported to require that any gun regulation falling within the plain text of the Amendment be upheld only if the government can demonstrate that the regulation is consistent with America’s historical …
The Persistence Of Common Law Limits On Armed Travel In The Early Republic: Surety And Affray Laws In Historical Context, Saul Cornell
The Persistence Of Common Law Limits On Armed Travel In The Early Republic: Surety And Affray Laws In Historical Context, Saul Cornell
SMU Law Review
In New York State Rifle & Pistol Ass’n v. Bruen, the Supreme Court abandoned the two-step test that had emerged after its landmark, but controversial ruling in District of Columbia v. Heller. The new approach announced in Bruen rejected the second prong of this test, casting aside means end scrutiny, or balancing, in favor of a “text, history, and tradition” approach. More recently, in United States v. Rahimi, the Court clarified some of the confusion over its Bruen test. One ongoing problem that lawyers and judges face when implementing this framework flows from the nature of materials …
Salerno And The Second Amendment, Jacob D. Charles
Salerno And The Second Amendment, Jacob D. Charles
SMU Law Review
The Supreme Court’s Second Amendment is beginning to take more concrete shape. In United States v. Rahimi, the Court rejected a challenge to the federal prohibition on gun possession by those subject to certain kinds of restraining orders. In that case, the Court’s analysis hinged in part on the difficulty of successfully waging facial constitutional challenges. It confirmed that the teaching of United States v. Salerno—that a statute is only facially unconstitutional if it has no valid applications—applies fully to the Second Amendment. Although it relied on this procedural lesson from Salerno, the justices overlooked Salerno’s …
