The Silicon Valley No-Poach Conspiracy, Eric A. Posner, Ruth Zheng Jan 2025

The Silicon Valley No-Poach Conspiracy, Eric A. Posner, Ruth Zheng

Coase-Sandor Institute for Law & Economics Research Paper Series

The Silicon Valley no-poach conspiracy is the most important cartel no one has heard of. It is rarely discussed in the cartel literature and is lost to public memory. More than forty tech firms, including Apple and Google, agreed not to poach employees from one another over three decades, causing an estimated $3.1 billion in lost wages. The Justice Department discovered and broke apart the cartel in 2010, but did not punish the cartel members, who quickly settled with employees and never admitted guilt. However, the case foreshadowed, and perhaps helped spur, two major developments in antitrust law a decade …

“We Are Not Museum Animals Or Photography Trophies.” The Colonizing Gaze Of The Lens: Ethics In The Photographic Representation Of Indigenous Communities In Ecuador, Sebastian Arciniegas Perez

Student Work

Since its beginnings, photography has been presented as an objective recording tool; however, its history reveals that it has also been an instrument of power. (Sontag, 2003, p. 45) warned that photographing implies appropriating the other, an act that places the viewer in a position of dominance over the subject represented. In this sense, the lens not only captures an image: it constructs a gaze (Berger, 2008, p. 22) complements this idea by stating that the camera translates reality into a field of visual power where the observer exercises authority over the observed. When the photographed subject belongs to an …

Crop Insurance And Weather Risk: Decision Tools And The Effects Of Rising Temperatures In Kentucky, Enil Serrano Jan 2025

Crop Insurance And Weather Risk: Decision Tools And The Effects Of Rising Temperatures In Kentucky, Enil Serrano

Theses and Dissertations--Agricultural Economics

This thesis investigates how rising temperatures and climate variability affect crop insurance decisions and premium rates for corn and soybean farmers in Kentucky. It introduces a new decision-support tool, the "Crop Insurance Decision Maker" (CIDM), which helps producers evaluate the financial trade-offs of various crop insurance products under different risk preferences. The first chapter details the tool’s development, function, and potential to improve farmer understanding of insurance options. The second chapter quantifies how +1°C and +2°C warming scenarios impact yield risk and crop insurance premium rates using 73 years of corn yield data, 51 years for soybean yield, and weather …

A Histopathology Aware Dino Model With Attention Based Representation Enhancement, Merve Ozkan, Caner Ozcan, Cody Bumgardner, Mahmut Selman Gokmen

Institute for Biomedical Informatics Faculty Publications

Histopathological image analysis plays a critical role in modern medical diagnostics, particularly in the detection and classification of various types of cancer. This study proposes a method called HistoDARE (Histopathology-Aware DINO with Attention-based Representation Enhancement), which offers an innovative approach to the attention module used in the Vision Transformers architecture. Unlike conventional attention mechanisms, HistoDARE introduces a novel three-stage AttentionWrapper module that sequentially applies spatial and channel attention followed by a residual refinement stage, enabling the extraction of spatially-aware and semantically distinctive feature representations. HistoDARE is a method integrated into the DINOv2 model, which uses the ViT-L/14 architecture. The obtained …

Characterizing And Targeting The Non-Catalytic Functions Of Phosphatase Of Regenerating Liver 3 (Prl-3) In Oncogenesis And Cancer Progression, Jeffery T. Jolly Jan 2025

Characterizing And Targeting The Non-Catalytic Functions Of Phosphatase Of Regenerating Liver 3 (Prl-3) In Oncogenesis And Cancer Progression, Jeffery T. Jolly

Theses and Dissertations--Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry

Phosphatase of Regenerating Liver 3 (PRL-3) is frequently upregulated in various cancers and is associated with poor patient prognosis. Although traditionally studied for its phosphatase activity, PRL-3 also interacts with the CNNM family of magnesium transporters through its catalytic site, and these two functions are mutually exclusive at any given time. Most previous studies relied on a commonly used PRL-3 mutation that disrupts both phosphatase activity and CNNM binding, making it challenging to determine which function drives its oncogenic effects. To address this gap in the field, I utilized a panel of PRL-3 mutants that selectively disrupt either phosphatase activity …

The Intersection Of Broadband And Health: Exploring Rural-Urban Disparities In Colorado, Hunter Anderson, Kristen Paradine

Scholarship in Medicine - All Papers

Modern healthcare infrastructure and progression depend on robust and reliable broadband access. Many areas of the U.S., however, still face limited access which exacerbates access to care and healthcare inequities. These trends can be observed in rural counties across the country, where resource constraints and reduced access to infrastructure remain limited. The correlation however between different health outcomes and broadband access in Colorado has not been widely explored in literature.
This study examines the relationship between broadband availability and different healthcare outcomes for rural and urban counties of Colorado by utilizing data from the County Health Rankings and Roadmaps for …

Intrinsic And Extrinsic Factors That Affect High School Graduation In California, Anisha Mandava, Joseph Pedregon

Scholarship in Medicine - All Papers

High school graduation is an essential milestone that indicates success later in life. In particular, high school students in California may encounter many obstacles that hinder their opportunity to acquire a high school diploma or equivalent certificate. So, what are these obstacles that students encounter on their journey through high school education? Here we seek to identify whether intrinsic factors, like disconnected youth and educational scores, or extrinsic factors, like segregation, funding, and food insecurity, have a larger impact on the student to reach high school completion. In our study, we utilized data from County Health Rankings for statistical analysis. …

Addressing Deaths Of Despair: The Impact Of Loneliness On Excessive Alcohol Use And Alcohol-Involved Driving Deaths In Ohio, Juliana Zacher, Akshey Suresh, Dylan Timperman

Scholarship in Medicine - All Papers

Alcohol-related driving deaths and excessive alcohol consumption continue to rise across the United States. These trends have had a large impact on historically disadvantaged populations, such as Appalachia, being disproportionately affected. Previous literature suggests factors such as loneliness, mental distress, segregation, and immigration status amongst others may contribute to this increase in drinking. Although delineating a clear role of the nature of the impact at a community level still remains unclear. Our objective was to explore these very factors as well as to identify social and economic predictors to explain alcohol-related driving deaths and excessive drinking in Ohio between 2016 …

(2025) I'M Trying To Love Garbage (2021) By Bethany Barton, Peter Shea Jan 2025

(2025) I'M Trying To Love Garbage (2021) By Bethany Barton, Peter Shea

Collected Papers of Peter Shea

Bethany Barton writes great books for kids about how minds change. In this one, the character’s arc is from thinking about garbage as just smelly icky stuff through empathizing (a little) with the creatures that feed on garbage, to eventually coming to see that all garbage is not equal; some needs special handling or it will clutter life up for a long time. The conclusion: I want to act like someone who thinks more about garbage, about what trash I create and where it ends up.”

Rivers And Tides, Peter Shea Jan 2025

Rivers And Tides, Peter Shea

Books for Adults

The documentary Rivers and Tides presents an unfamiliar take on the work of the artist, the role of a work of art in human life, and, ultimately, on the relationship between human beings and natural objects and forces. In following artist Andy Goldsworthy as he talks through the work he is doing, one has an opportunity to ask basic questions about some deeply held beliefs – to which there are, as he shows, plausible alternatives.

Comparing Post-Run And Retrospective Minute-By-Minute Workload Scores, Kathryn Ballard, Michael Stewart Jan 2025

Comparing Post-Run And Retrospective Minute-By-Minute Workload Scores, Kathryn Ballard, Michael Stewart

International Symposium on Aviation Psychology - 2025

When we ask participants to evaluate their workload in a real or contrived scenario it isunknown how they quantify their response. This uncertainty compounds when the scenariois long and has several subtasks. Thus, it is difficult to determine what the workload scoresindicate. The questions arise: Are participants reporting a peak level of workload? Somesort of aggregate? In this paper, we aim to correlate NASA Task-Load Index (TLX) scoresobtained during a contrived scenario in a flight simulator with minute-by-minute measuresof workload. We describe the strength and direction of correlations between the twoworkload ratings and determine if there is a consistent categorical …

Mapping User-Centered Design Evaluation Methods To System Development Stages Applied To Air Traffic Management Technology Development, Amy L. Alexander, Tom G. Reynolds, Catherine Dulude Jan 2025

Mapping User-Centered Design Evaluation Methods To System Development Stages Applied To Air Traffic Management Technology Development, Amy L. Alexander, Tom G. Reynolds, Catherine Dulude

International Symposium on Aviation Psychology - 2025

User involvement in software prototype evaluation is often constrained by availableresources. To optimize user engagement in design development, we compiled aframework mapping user-centered design evaluation methods to system developmentphases as a function of fidelity; namely, utilizing lower-fidelity/lower resourceburden methods (e.g., cognitive walkthroughs) at early prototype developmentphases, and higher-fidelity/higher resource burden methods (e.g., field testing) duringlater phases. The benefits of this approach lie in the efficient utilization of time andresources during iterative product development, focusing on incorporating the “right”evaluation methods at the “right” times. We utilized this framework to guideprototype development and evaluation efforts in a program sponsored by NAVCANADA in …

Facilitating Passenger Acceptance Of Evtol: Management Of Expectation And Experience, Adam Schachner, Jocelyn Keillor, Gregory Craig

International Symposium on Aviation Psychology - 2025

For passengers accustomed to commercial fixed-wing flight, electric vertical takeoffand landing aircraft (eVTOLs) will represent a novel form of air travel. Thepassenger experience of urban air mobility (UAM) eVTOLs will encompass newsounds, vibrations, motions, and a visual field flooded with close-up views of theurban canyon. Research on passenger acceptance has largely relied on text-basedquestionnaires. However, acceptance will be influenced by how experiencecompares to expectations and the extent to which discomfort or, in the worst case, distress, is experienced. The existing passenger discomfort literature focuseslargely on the impact of noise and vibration. Compared with traditionalcommercial flight, passengers may experience greater range, intensity, …

Cybersickness & Susceptibility In An Exterior Preflight Inspection Simulation, Nathan A. Sonnenfeld, Alexis Sanchez, Blake Nguyen, Fiona Duruaku, Alex Alonso, Florian G. Jentsch

International Symposium on Aviation Psychology - 2025

Cybersickness may impact the use of virtual reality (VR) in training, as anytrainee group, including those interested in aviation careers, may includeindividuals highly susceptible to cybersickness. We therefore examinedrelationships among cybersickness and susceptibility, under varying conditions ofimmersion and interactivity, during a simulated exterior preflight inspection task.Using a non-pilot, but demographically similar trainee group (undergraduatecollege students), we found a high prevalence of susceptibility (79.4%) amongparticipants, with a high incidence (70.3%) of cybersickness in VR. Susceptibilitywas a significant predictor (R2=0.176) of cybersickness severity. Profiles ofcybersickness symptoms (Disorientation, Oculomotor, Nausea) were consistentwithin, but not between, conditions of immersion. This research further detailsrelationships among …
