Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

This project aimed to develop a laboratory-scale solution that replicates produced water conditions (CO2 + brine) found in crude pipelines, with the added requirement of promoting the growth of sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB). A previously successful study was used as a reference, which employed a hybrid salt solution containing essential nutrients and environmental factors. The proposed solution included 10 g sodium chloride, 1 g sodium pyruvate, 0.2 g ammonium chloride, and 0.8 g sodium sulfate per liter of deionized water. Electrochemical testing (Linear Polarization Resistance and Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy) was performed on solutions with and without rhamnolipid. Results from the …

Understanding Tap As A Narrative Form, Jylian R. Haynes

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

I will be researching tap dancing as narrative form. As a tap teacher and member of the dance community, I feel pulled to learn about tap as a narrative form to educated myself and my students, and to inspire my choreography. I will support my research on tap as a narrative form by looking at tap history, technique, and pull from personal experience. As well as writing a research paper, I will create a piece of choreography to showcase my research. The paper and choreographed piece will work adjacently to emphasize the things I learn about tap as …

Proactive Distributed Emergency Response With Heterogeneous Tasks Allocation, Justice Darko, Hyoshin Park Jan 2025

Proactive Distributed Emergency Response With Heterogeneous Tasks Allocation, Justice Darko, Hyoshin Park

Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Faculty Publications

Traditionally, traffic incident management (TIM) programs coordinate the deployment of emergency resources to immediate incident requests without accommodating the interdependencies on incident evolutions in the environment. However, ignoring these inherent interdependencies while making current deployment decisions is shortsighted, and the resulting naive deployment strategy can significantly worsen the overall incident delay impact on the network. The interdependencies on incident evolution in the environment, including those between incident occurrences and those between resource availability in near-future requests and the anticipated duration of the immediate incident request, should be considered through a look-ahead model when making current-stage deployment decisions. This study develops …

Integrating Data Management Plans Into The Unified Architecture Framework Standards Views, Cansu Yalim, Holly A. H. Handley Jan 2025

Integrating Data Management Plans Into The Unified Architecture Framework Standards Views, Cansu Yalim, Holly A. H. Handley

Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Faculty Publications

System Architecting translates an operational concept into a model of the system to be realized. There is a need for a Data Management Plan (DMP) to be included in the overall system engineering process with the advent of Digital Engineering. Data longevity, accessibility, and integrity can all be improved throughout the system's lifecycle by a well-defined DMP. System engineers use an architecture framework to arrange the system data into several sets of viewpoints. Incorporating a DMP at this point specifies the procedures for gathering, storing, retrieving, and maintaining data to ensure that all interested parties have access to current, correct …

Developing Staff Training Modules To Enhance Neurodiversity-Affirming Care In An Inpatient Psychiatric Setting, Haley Morris Jan 2025

Developing Staff Training Modules To Enhance Neurodiversity-Affirming Care In An Inpatient Psychiatric Setting, Haley Morris

Entry-Level Occupational Therapy Doctorate - Doctoral Capstone Symposium

Introduction: Individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) are admitted to psychiatric hospitals at higher rates and for longer durations compared to neurotypical individuals (Kuriakose et al., 2018). Externalizing behaviors, such as aggression and self-injury, significantly increase hospitalization risk, yet standard psychiatric interventions (e.g., traditional process groups) are often ineffective for this population. A key barrier is the lack of ASD-specific training among hospital staff (Siegel & Gabriels, 2012). This capstone project aimed to address this gap by developing and implementing an educational training program to improve patient-centered, neurodiversity-affirming care across all inpatient psychiatric units. The primary aims were to: …

I’M All The Fishes In The Sea: Creating An Animal Care Ethic From Spinoza’S Ethics, Denicia Finney Jan 2025

I’M All The Fishes In The Sea: Creating An Animal Care Ethic From Spinoza’S Ethics, Denicia Finney

Theses & ETDs

Although Spinoza encourages us to understand Nature, and our place as parts in it, he felt inclined to say that the lower animals have nothing in common with our nature, and so ‘we have every right against them that they have against us’. Is he ultimately justified in making this claim? I believe that Spinoza's ethic, and the end that ensues from it would actually warrant fair consideration of the lower animals. I demonstrate this through the separation of the eternal essence and the particular essence which each individual is composed of. Insofar as humankind acts according to the universal …

Analyzing The Evolution Of Major League Baseball Hitting Strategies (1950–2010): A Machine Learning And Interactive Dashboard Approach, John Mcintosh

Theses & ETDs

This thesis examines the evolution of Major League Baseball (MLB) hitting strategies from 1950 to 2010 using statistical analysis and machine learning techniques. The study investigates changes in player performance metrics to determine how hitting styles have evolved, specifically focusing on distinguishing "power hitters" from "contact hitters." Principal Component Analysis “(PCA)”, t-distributed Stochastic Neighbor Embedding, and clustering methods, such as K Means Clustering, were applied to historical MLB data from Baseball Reference to reveal underlying trends and shifts in player roles over time. An interactive dashboard was developed utilizing Streamlit to visualize these trends dynamically. This was done by incorporating …

Who We Don’T See: Paternal Kinship In Adoption, Nikhita Razdan Jan 2025

Who We Don’T See: Paternal Kinship In Adoption, Nikhita Razdan

Theses & ETDs

The topic of this research is discovering what defines the connection between adopted people and their biological fathers due to the lack of research regarding that perspective. The research was conducted through repeated in-depth interviews online and in person. The subjects that are addressed here involve the intersection between adoptees' gender and adoptive identity, biases held within the adoptive household, and negative biases towards their countries of origin. These topics assist in understanding the kinship found, or not found, between the participants and their biological fathers. Two frameworks are also presented here, deemed the Adoptive Environment Bias and the Motherland …

Evaluating The Effects Of Coastal Development On Sea Turtle Nesting Success Rates In Southwest Florida, Lydia Ubry Jan 2025

Evaluating The Effects Of Coastal Development On Sea Turtle Nesting Success Rates In Southwest Florida, Lydia Ubry

Educational Resources For Social-Emotional Regulation In Children, Gabrielle A. Walker Jan 2025

Educational Resources For Social-Emotional Regulation In Children, Gabrielle A. Walker

Entry-Level Occupational Therapy Doctorate - Doctoral Capstone Symposium

Emotional dysregulation is defined as patterns of emotional experience or expression that interfere with goal-directed activity (Thompson 2019). Emotional development is built on the relationships created between a child and primary caregivers including parents, extended family, and/or teachers (Stern, 2010). This project supports the development of educational resources to implement social-emotional regulation tools with children. There were some resources at the site that already existed. These were updated and revamped, along with new resources created to address social-emotional dysregulation in children.

Two passionate pediatric occupational therapists based in the Charleston area created a self-regulation education program that is implemented by …

1-Extra 3-Component Edge Connectivity Of Modified Bubble-Sort Networks, Guozhen Zhang, Zhimin Yue, Dajin Wang Jan 2025

1-Extra 3-Component Edge Connectivity Of Modified Bubble-Sort Networks, Guozhen Zhang, Zhimin Yue, Dajin Wang

School of Computing Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

The classic edge connectivity of a network G is the minimum number of edges whose removal disconnects G into multiple components. It can be used as a measure of the reliability of the network. The extra edge connectivity (resp. the component edge connectivity) imposes conditions on the size (resp. the number) of components, and both are the generalizations of the classic edge connectivity. The extra component edge connectivity combines both conditional edge connectivities to measure the network’s reliability in a more particular and targeted manner. The modified bubble-sort graph MBn is a topological model proposed for the interconnection network of …

Rpl Attack Detection In Iot Environments: An Ensemble Approach, Ashley Etheridge, Vaibhav Anu

School of Computing Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

The Internet of Things’ rapid growth has given rise to significant security challenges. This paper addresses security concerns in IoT within Low power and Lossy Networks (LLNs) that utilize the Routing Protocol for Low Power and Lossy Networks (RPL). We propose a novel ensemble classifier, DT- NB-ANN-SGD, to detect various RPL attacks. Our experimentation compares this ensemble approach with individual classifiers (DT, NB, ANN, SGD) using the ROUT-4-2023 dataset. Results indicate promising accuracy (86.21%) but highlight the need for further improvement in recall and F1 scores. This study contributes insights for enhancing RPL attack detection in IoT environments.
