Library Presentations

The Grand Challenges Project supports global collaborations informing equitable and evidence-informed practices for higher education assessment practitioners. The Grand Challenge’s Equity Action Makers Team conducted twenty interviews in 2023/2024 with assessment professionals across higher education. Several participants explained that they have adjusted their approach to equity work to successfully complete their projects or achieve their goals. They did this in response to various macro and micro influences, such as recognizing their own positionality, meeting grant funding requirements, dealing with institutional financial or cultural pressures, navigating political pressures outside their influence, or fostering supportive networks of practitioners.

BACKGROUND To achieve the best possible outcome in surgical refractory epilepsy, the seizure onset zone must be accurately identified prior to treatment.

OBSERVATIONS A 38-year-old man presented with tonic-clonic and focal seizures 2–3 times per month, refractory to antiseizure medications. Scalp EEG, MRI, PET, ictal SPECT, magnetoencephalography, and stereo-EEG (SEEG) did not provide conclusive seizure onset zone localization. Subsequently, the patient was included in the authors’ ongoing postictal arterial spin labeling (ASL) study and additional postprocessing was performed with a morphometric analysis program (MAP) and texture analysis. Using these results, the authors reexamined the original structural MR images, with attention …

New Insights Into The Ovulatory Process In The Human Ovary, Misung Jo, Mats Brännström, James W. Akins, Thomas E. Curry Jan 2025

New Insights Into The Ovulatory Process In The Human Ovary, Misung Jo, Mats Brännström, James W. Akins, Thomas E. Curry

UK CARES Faculty Publications

BACKGROUND: Successful ovulation is essential for natural conception and fertility. Defects in the ovulatory process are associated with various conditions of infertility or subfertility in women. However, our understanding of the intra-ovarian biochemical mechanisms underlying this process in women has lagged compared to our understanding of animal models. This has been largely due to the limited availability of human ovarian samples that can be used to examine changes across the ovulatory period and delineate the underlying cellular/molecular mechanisms in women. Despite this challenge, steady progress has been made to improve our knowledge of the ovulatory process in women by: (i) …

Evaluating Experiential Learning In Undergraduate Agricultural Education: A Content Analysis Of Course Syllabi From A College Of Agriculture, Tyler Newberry

Theses and Dissertations--Community & Leadership Development

This study evaluated the presence and depth of experiential learning within undergraduate course syllabi from the Martin-Gatton College of Agriculture, Food, and Environment. Through a content analysis of 41 syllabi across five academic majors, the study examined how course objectives and assignments aligned with Kolb’s Experiential learning cycle (1984), Webb’s depth of knowledge (1997), and Joplin’s Mini to maxi Scale (1981). A structured coding instrument was used to quantify the frequency of learning elements across these three frameworks. The findings revealed that Abstract Conceptualization and Reflective Observation were the most common stages in both objectives and assignments, while Concrete Experience …

Clinicians Perspective On The Implementation Of Person-Centered Care In Persons With Aphasia, Carmen S. Alderman

Theses and Dissertations--Communication Sciences and Disorders

This paper examines speech-language pathologist perspective on implementing person-centered care for persons with aphasia. Person-centered care is based on the social model, which emphasizes the importance of including the client. The survey addressed clinicians’ use of person-centered care related to collaborative goal setting and treatment planning, as well as facilitators and barriers to implementing person-centered care for individuals with aphasia based on the view of practicing clinicians across a variety of settings. The results indicated most speech-language pathologists have heard of person-centered care, understand the importance of involving clients in goal setting, ask clients about their preferences when setting goals, …

True Law As Genre: Narrative Nonfiction And The Law, Jorge L. Contreras Jan 2025

True Law As Genre: Narrative Nonfiction And The Law, Jorge L. Contreras

Texas A&M Journal of Property Law

The Genome Defense, which offers a book-length narrative nonfiction account of the civil litigation that led to the elimination of patents on human genes in the United States, is a member of a distinct literary subgenre that I term True Law. Like the older and better-known True Crime genre, True Law narratives blend the conventions of journalism and novelistic writing to describe complex legal disputes in a manner that is engaging and accessible to the general public. True Law accounts, which have increased in number and popularity since the publication of Jonathan Harr’s A Civil Action in 1995, serve …

On Snow’S Intellectual Property And Immorality, David O. Taylor Jan 2025

On Snow’S Intellectual Property And Immorality, David O. Taylor

Texas A&M Journal of Property Law

In this Essay, I consider the “why” and “how” of Professor Snow’s controversial, countercultural, important, and relevant position that immorality may result in the denial of intellectual property protection. First, I highlight how surprising it is that Professor Snow’s argument springs from the theories underlying intellectual property protection, rather than the theories underlying the morality and ethics he believes ought to be considered in determining intellectual property protection. No one (that I know, at least) goes to the Environmental Protection Agency seeking better regulations to protect the environment and uses the labor desert theory of property rights as an argument. …

Exploring Early Childhood Educators’ Perceptions Of Lockdown Drills: Preparedness, Training Needs, And The Balance With Social-Emotional Development, Juniper Alaska Brewer

Theses and Dissertations--Early Childhood, Special Education, and Counselor Education

The purpose of this study was to evaluate early childhood educators’ perceptions of lockdown drills. It assessed feelings of preparedness, perceived training needs, and balancing safety protocols with children's social-emotional development. A multi-methods online survey was distributed to 13 early childhood educators and students in the Interdisciplinary Early Childhood Education (IECE) field, collecting both quantitative and qualitative responses via Qualtrics.

Survey data showed educators strongly agreed drills prepare them for emergencies (average 4.46/5) and generally agreed drills prepare children (4.08/5), though responses were more neutral about reducing educator anxiety (3.77/5). Only one participant reported occasional training; most (7 of 13) …

Economic Miracles And Their Hypes: An Africanist Disputation, Abou B. Bamba Jan 2025

Economic Miracles And Their Hypes: An Africanist Disputation, Abou B. Bamba

History Faculty Publications

This essay argues that economic miracles are the result of particular processes and procedures to establish a regime of truth. Taking the example of Ivory Coast from the 1950s through the early 1980s as core evidence, the author shows the role of public relations in creating a particular perception of economic achievements. Using the emergence of both West Germany and Japan as early examples in the wake of postwar reconstruction, it is further underlined that the larger context of the Cold War facilitated the construction of economic miracles.

Duae Cypriani Soarez Praefationes Ad Opus De Arte Rhetorica Libri Tres Commentariis Rhetoricis Instructae, Marcus Porto Jan 2025

Duae Cypriani Soarez Praefationes Ad Opus De Arte Rhetorica Libri Tres Commentariis Rhetoricis Instructae, Marcus Porto

Theses and Dissertations--Modern and Classical Languages, Literature and Cultures

De Arte Rhetorica Libri Tres (1562) written by Cyprian Soarez (1524-1593), priest and teacher of the Society of Jesus, was the standard rhetorical manual in the Ratio Studiorum and thus was used for over two centuries in Jesuit colleges throughout the world. Concerned that young students of Latin were not yet ready for the major rhetorical texts of antiquity, such as Cicero’s and Quintilian’s, Soarez wrote this manual as a digest of ancient rhetoric to the beginner. This thesis uses the rhetorical precepts found in Cyprian’s work to analyze the work’s own two prefaces. Thus, it aims at providing …

What We Can Learn From The Notorious P&Id V. Nigeria, Emily Granja Jan 2025

What We Can Learn From The Notorious P&Id V. Nigeria, Emily Granja

Arbitration Brief

On October 23, 2023, England’s High Court of Justice ruled in favor of the Federal Republic of Nigeria in Nigeria v. Process & Industrial Developments Ltd. (P&ID). Reviewing the case, the High Court vacated P&ID’s $10 billion arbitral award after finding significant evidence of fraud and bribery. While the High Court’s decision marked a victory for Nigeria, it also shook the international arbitration system. This case exposed some of international arbitration’s flaws and generated new concerns regarding the confidentiality inherent in the arbitration process.

The Complex Hurdles Of Sex Trafficking Investigation, Carlie Tretera Jan 2025

The Complex Hurdles Of Sex Trafficking Investigation, Carlie Tretera

Student Research Design & Innovation Symposium

In the past few decades, the prevalence of trafficking has increased, not only around the world, but also within the United States. In 2023, there was an estimated 1,091,000 people in America living in modern-day slavery conditions, which falls under the umbrella of human trafficking. In 2022, the Department of Justice only prosecuted a total of 310 individuals, 155 predominantly involved in sex trafficking. Compared to the estimated number of victims, 310 convicted traffickers is a strikingly low number. This is due to the extremely challenging investigation process related to human and sex trafficking. This research focused on why investigating …

Mindfulness Intervention In A Public Health Class, Marygrace Kasprzak, Gracie Kauffman Jan 2025

Mindfulness Intervention In A Public Health Class, Marygrace Kasprzak, Gracie Kauffman

Student Research Design & Innovation Symposium

Mindfulness is a practice defined as “paying attention on purpose,” and involves practicing activities such as yoga and meditation. These practices have been consistently linked to numerous benefits, including stress reduction, improved wellbeing, and a more positive outlook on life. Additionally, there is evidence that suggests mindfulness may enhance academic performance among college students. This mindfulness intervention experiment aimed to assess the impact of a regular mindfulness meditation practice on academic performance, engagement, and overall student wellbeing in a college setting. The experiment was conducted with two health sciences courses (HSC1100 and HSC2130) at Johnson & Wales University. The HSC1100 …

The Disconnect Between Real Policing And Television, Jelena Vazquez Jan 2025

The Disconnect Between Real Policing And Television, Jelena Vazquez

Student Research Design & Innovation Symposium

Crime television shows portray a certain image of police officers that can either hurt or improve their public image. This study explored the evolution of the portrayal of law enforcement in fictional television shows compared to real world work. The investigator’s primary research was to watch two episodes from six different crime series and analyze how each show portrayed homicide and kidnapping cases. Secondary research was to interview police officers on how cases, like those depicted in the shows, are truly investigated and solved. The findings suggest that crime shows often mislead audiences and skew the public’s opinion of police …

A Restaurant Built For The Community, Zoe Gross Jan 2025

A Restaurant Built For The Community, Zoe Gross

Student Research Design & Innovation Symposium

There is a clear need for community centers and outreach programs in which members of the community can be provided with needed resources. A common problem within these programs is their struggle to be successful financially. This project was conducted as a possible solution to this problem, focusing on questions related to how a restaurant could be designed that serves delicious food and that provides support and aid similar to a community center. Other aspects of this project, such as whether a restaurant could use parts of its profits for activities that help the community through organizing fundraisers, community-based programs …

Protecting Older Adults Who Are Incarcerated: Does The 8th Amendment Work?, Jalayne J. Arias Jan 2025

Protecting Older Adults Who Are Incarcerated: Does The 8th Amendment Work?, Jalayne J. Arias

Health Matrix: The Journal of Law-Medicine

Older adults in prison and within other carceral systems (i.e. jails, parole) are uniquely at risk for elder mistreatment. Emerging research has begun to consider the experiences of older adults within carceral settings, including aging in prison, chronic conditions and medical care, compassionate release, and end-of-life care. This research exposes evidence that prisons and other carceral settings lack resources and services for older adults. Given increased vulnerability and a lack of protective resources, older adults experiencing incarceration may experience disproportional rates and consequences of elder mistreatment. A public health approach to develop tools and resources that would prevent, detect, and …

Decision-Making Supports And Cognitive Decline, Rebekah Diller Jan 2025

Decision-Making Supports And Cognitive Decline, Rebekah Diller

Health Matrix: The Journal of Law-Medicine

For persons with a range of cognitive disabilities, supported decision-making, rooted in a human rights approach to disability, has emerged as a tool that permits them to make legally binding decisions and avoid guardianship. As supported decision-making policy has evolved in the United States, state statutes have primarily focused on formal agreements through which individuals can designate trusted supporters to assist in obtaining information, processing that information, and communicating a decision. This Article argues that supported decision-making has promise for preserving the autonomy of persons living with dementia, but that the model of a supported decisionmaking agreement embodied in the …
