Lifelong Learning And Archaeological Field Schools, Ed Schortman, Pat Urban Jan 2025

Lifelong Learning And Archaeological Field Schools, Ed Schortman, Pat Urban

Four Valleys Archive Scholarship

Higher education inculcates in students an enduring curiosity about the world. Accomplishing this goal requires helping undergraduates recognize that learning is a social process occurring within multiple communities of practice. Each of these collectives provides different lenses through which aspects of reality are illuminated, none encompassing all there is to know about a subject. Students thus appreciate that learning is an open-ended processes driven by a curiosity that is never satisfied. Knowledge resulting from that process is forever being refined, a project to which undergraduates can contribute. Appreciating the many ways of knowing the world requires engaging meaningfully with these …

Exploring Stress Management Spaces Using Sensory Engagement On College Campuses: A Scoping Review, Karen R. Puckett Jan 2025

Exploring Stress Management Spaces Using Sensory Engagement On College Campuses: A Scoping Review, Karen R. Puckett

Occupational Therapy Doctorate Capstone Projects

Background: College students experience high levels of stress, with associated negative outcomes such as poor mental and physical health. In response, colleges and universities have explored the use of stress management spaces designed to address and promote improved mental health and wellbeing, but evidence regarding the most effective design and impact of these spaces is limited.

Purpose: The purpose of this project was to conduct a scoping review of the available literature related to stress management in higher education settings. The research questions are: What are the characteristics and design features of these spaces, and how do stress management spaces …

Letters From A Fragmented Democracy, Maureen Edobor Jan 2025

Letters From A Fragmented Democracy, Maureen Edobor

Scholarly Articles

This piece confronts the stakes of our current trajectory by looking to the future. It presents six fictional letters to illustrate where today’s ominous currents could lead. In this imagined tomorrow, contemporary voting restrictions, judicial erosion, and administrative manipulation have gradually hollowed out the franchise, transforming formal democracy into little more than an empty spectacle. Each letter voices a different facet of democratic erosion: a voter disenfranchised by bureaucratic hurdles, a candidate’s voice hijacked by deepfake technology, a neighbor ensnared by punitive voting laws, a community erased by gerrymandering, a campaign drowned in dark money, and even a corporate memo …

Empirical Essays On Mobility-Restricting Covenants, Lorenzo G. Luisetto Jan 2025

Empirical Essays On Mobility-Restricting Covenants, Lorenzo G. Luisetto

SJD Dissertations

This thesis, which consists of four essays, uses empirical methods to study questions on the use of mobility-restricting covenants in business and employment contracts.

The first chapter investigates the spillover effects of the so-called “No-Poach Initiative,” an enforcement action launched by the Antitrust Division of the State of Washington Attorney General’s Office in January 2018 that led 237 franchisors to agree to stop using no-poaching clauses—i.e., provisions in franchise contracts that prohibit franchisees from hiring each other’s employees—nationwide. I document that approximately one third of the franchisors not targeted by the No-Poach Initiative removed the no-poaching clause from their franchise …

Creating A Culture Of Care: An Exploratory Study Of The Impact Of Community-Building Circles On The Elementary Learning Environment And Classroom Dynamics, Jennifer Cipolla Jan 2025

Creating A Culture Of Care: An Exploratory Study Of The Impact Of Community-Building Circles On The Elementary Learning Environment And Classroom Dynamics, Jennifer Cipolla

Selected Full Text Dissertations, 2011-

Providing students with opportunities to connect has never been more critical, especially in today’s increasingly isolated and divided society. By incorporating community-building circles into the regular classroom routine, educators can positively impact various aspects of students’ experiences in school. Not only does circle practice nurture students’ sense of belonging in the educational community and help them sharpen interpersonal skills, but it also prepares young learners for life beyond school, setting them up for future success. Using principles from Lev Vygotsky’s sociocultural theory, Martin Seligman’s well-being theory, and social-emotional learning theory, the researcher in this study examined the influence of community-building …

Exploring Elementary And Middle School Building Leaders’ Experiences, Perspectives, And Strategies In Implementing, Integrating, And Evaluating Social-Emotional Learning In Northeastern United States Schools, Muntaha Hussein Jan 2025

Exploring Elementary And Middle School Building Leaders’ Experiences, Perspectives, And Strategies In Implementing, Integrating, And Evaluating Social-Emotional Learning In Northeastern United States Schools, Muntaha Hussein

Selected Full Text Dissertations, 2011-

In this phenomenological qualitative study, I explored how school-building leaders’ perspectives, experiences, and knowledge impact the implementation and sustainability of social-emotional learning (SEL) programs in Northeastern U.S. schools. I conducted semistructured interviews with 10 elementary- and middle-school-building leaders to gain insights into their lived experiences and leadership practices related to SEL. Grounded in distributed-leadership theory (DLT), which emphasizes shared leadership, study results showed that all participants viewed SEL as essential to students’ well-being and academic success. However, leaders reported inconsistent implementation across classrooms and schools, accompanied by limited district support. Although schools promoted SEL in theory, participants noted a lack …

Provider Perspectives On Gestational Diabetes In Samoa: A Qualitative Study Of Barriers, Facilitators, And Opportunities, Andriana Nicole Marijic Buljubasic Jan 2025

Provider Perspectives On Gestational Diabetes In Samoa: A Qualitative Study Of Barriers, Facilitators, And Opportunities, Andriana Nicole Marijic Buljubasic

Public Health Theses

Background: Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is associated with significant maternal and neonatal risks, with Samoa facing a disproportionate burden of GDM linked to high obesity (76.7% of women), type 2 diabetes (19.5%), and cultural-systemic barriers to care[1]. Despite GDM accounting for 38% of pregnancy complications at Tupua Tamasese Meaole (TTM) Hospital, qualitative insights into GDM care or provider experiences remain limited. This study applies a socio-ecological framework to explore multi-level influences on GDM care within Samoa’s unique cultural context and healthcare landscape.

Aim: To understand the barriers and facilitators to effective care-team response when treating gestational diabetes patients at TTM …
