Student Research Symposium (SRS)
Weather balloons play a crucial role in atmospheric data collection, but their vulnerability to lightning strikes remains a significant concern. This study seeks to address two primary objectives: (1) to test the hypothesis that lightning does not significantly interfere with the accuracy of data collected by weather balloon payloads, and (2) to explore the feasibility of using a lightweight Faraday cage to protect the balloon from potential lightning damage. The payload will be equipped with standard sensors for measuring temperature, pressure, and humidity, along with lightning detection equipment to monitor any strikes during the flight. Additionally, the project includes secondary …
Evaluating A Biologically-Inspired Multi-Agent System Consensus Algorithm For Robustness To False Negatives, Grace Lynn Gratton
Evaluating A Biologically-Inspired Multi-Agent System Consensus Algorithm For Robustness To False Negatives, Grace Lynn Gratton
Student Research Symposium (SRS)
Multi-agent systems have several advantages over centralized systems of control and are becoming more heavily relied upon by systems. Consensus algorithms are a fundamental element of multi-agent systems, but current methods of consensus have a low robustness to faulted agents, endangering the integrity of the system. Biologically Inspired Design previously inspired a state-of-the-art consensus algorithm with resilience of up to 20% faulted agents within a population, called the Synchronous Hatching Consensus Algorithm. This article further tests the algorithm by implementing faulted agents reporting false negatives, rather than the original false positives, to see if the model remains robust. To test …
Enhancing Active Detection Using Semi-Supervised Contrastive Learning In Remote Sensing, Sirio Jansen-Sanchez
Enhancing Active Detection Using Semi-Supervised Contrastive Learning In Remote Sensing, Sirio Jansen-Sanchez
Student Research Symposium (SRS)
This research aims to develop a semi-supervised model leveraging contrastive learning for remote sensing, with a primary focus on sonar data processing and potential adaptation to radar systems. Remote sensing technologies like sonar and radar rely on the detection of objects and environments using reflected signals—sonar with sound waves for underwater mapping and radar with electromagnetic waves for atmospheric or terrestrial detection. The focus of this work is on contrastive learning, which enables the model to differentiate between objects detected in sonar scans, such as buoys or gates, by learning distinct representations for each object. The dataset comprises sonar scans …

Assessing The Impacts Of The U.S. Open Skies Agreements With Qatar And The U.A.E. Before And After The Global Pandemic, Hassan Alsmery
Student Research Symposium (SRS)
Of more than 130 Open Skies Agreements (OSAs) signed by the U.S., the ones with Qatar and the UAE -established in 2001 and 2002 - have faced scrutiny regarding their effectiveness in promoting U.S. airline industry growth and expanding global travel options. In 2015, the Big Three U.S. airlines - American, Delta, and United Airlines - petitioned the U.S. government to renegotiate U.S. OSAs with these two countries and to freeze new routes and capacity of the three Gulf carriers (Emirates, Etihad, and Qatar Airways). After a two-year investigation, the U.S. government made the decision in 2018 to keep the …
Dual-Layer Capacitance Self Healing-Based Sensor For Enhanced Pressure Detection, Michael Ricciardella
Dual-Layer Capacitance Self Healing-Based Sensor For Enhanced Pressure Detection, Michael Ricciardella
Student Research Symposium (SRS)
In recent years, pressure sensing technologies have made remarkable advancements in the biomedical engineering realm. These advancements have expanded the applications of pressure sensing, leading to the continuous evolution of these technologies. These sensors have a versatile range of applications, from detecting changes in concentrated volumes of liquids to gases, and some are used to identify cardiac anomalies like arrhythmias. This investigation focuses on a dual layer dielectric structure constructed of self healing polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) and polyvinylidene difluoride (PVDF) fiber electrodes. The PDMS layer is composed through a 3D printed mold which serves as the foundation upon which PDMS is …

Effects Of Respiratory Muscle Training And Nitrate Supplementation On Exercise Performance, Sabrina Ehrenfort, Erica Bryant, Toni Butler, Riley Dienna, Hannah Lyons, Christopher Macduffee, Danielle Norris, Alex Teigen, Scott Ferguson
Student Research Symposium (SRS)
This study will test the hypothesis that 6 weeks of respiratory muscle training (RMT) will increase diaphragm muscle thickness, power, and aerobic exercise performance and that these effects will be greater when RMT is combined with dietary nitrate supplementation. Utilizing the K5 PowerBreathe device for RMT, participants will complete a six-week training protocol while incorporating nitrate supplementation to assess its impact on respiratory muscle strength (Sindex) and endurance exercise performance (VO2max). Pre- and post-intervention measurements will include diaphragm thickness assessed via ultrasound, Sindex, lung volume, maximal cycling power output, and VO2 max. VO2 max and maximal …

Rosisat - The Radiation Orbital Shielding Investigation Satellite, Steven L. Insignares, Jacob L. Blanton, Cole D. Walker
Student Research Symposium (SRS)
In the last twenty years, CubeSats and similar small satellites have become increasingly popular, offering a cost-effective way to conduct important scientific activities in low Earth orbit compared to traditional satellites, including scientific research, education, technology demonstrations, and commercial applications like communication networks. The Radiation Orbital Shielding Investigation Satellite (ROSISat) is an ongoing 1U CubeSat project designed to study the effectiveness of different materials in shielding against radiation in space. The main goal of ROSISat is to carry out experiments testing nine different materials, including simulants of lunar and Martian regolith, to improve protection against single-event upsets to prepare for …

Reading Strategically: Comparing The Use Of Metacognitive Strategies In L1 University And L2 Iep Students, Adil Bentahar, Alisha Biler
EnglishUSA Journal
In this study, we explored the use of reading metacognitive strategies of 133 college students, comparing the self-reported use of L1 and L2 English students. Results indicate that while both groups report using strategies often when reading academic texts and having similar preferences in types of reading strategy, L2 readers use strategies more frequently than their native-speaking peers, particularly for support strategies.
