Ethics, Law, And The Science Of Fish Welfare, Colin Allen Aug 2012

Ethics, Law, And The Science Of Fish Welfare, Colin Allen

Between the Species

Fish farming is one of the fastest growing sectors of agriculture, attracting considerable attention to the question of whether existing farming regulations and animal welfare laws are adequate to deal with the expanding role of fish in feeding humans. The role of fish as model organisms in scientific research is also expanding -- a majority of research biology departments now keep zebrafish for the purposes of genome biology, and they are used widely used for basic neuroscience research. However, due to their diversity and distance from mammalian biology, fish pose difficult questions for the application of legal and ethical principles …

5 Things Writing Workshop Teachers Want Parents To Know, Libby Duggan

Articles

When I was teaching, I wanted parents to know how to support the work that we were doing in the classroom. Perhaps most importantly, I wanted to be sure that what students were told about their writing at home was consistent with what I taught in the classroom. So with that in mind, I've assembled an article that you can share with families: "5 Things Writing Workshop Teachers Want Parents to Know."

Development Of A Method To Study Thromboembolism By Direct Observation In Blood-Contacting Microsystems Using High-Definition Video Microscopy, Yong Min Kim Aug 2012

Development Of A Method To Study Thromboembolism By Direct Observation In Blood-Contacting Microsystems Using High-Definition Video Microscopy, Yong Min Kim

Theses and Dissertations

A unique and novel method to study thromboembolism by direct observation was developed. High-definition videos of thrombus formation and embolization were successfully obtained in miniature flow cells using in-vitro, non-invasive, real-time techniques. Critical parameters of thromboembolism such as thrombus growth rate, thrombus growth direction, shear force on the thrombus at embolization, and adhesion strength of the thrombus to the foreign surface were determined. Thrombus growth was found predominantly in two locations: 1) in the flow recirculation zone just after the trailing edge of the small tubes (53%) and 2) at the leading edge of the small tubes (47%). In the …

Curious Growth Of A Buried Sio2 Layer, Thomas O. Mcconkie Aug 2012

Curious Growth Of A Buried Sio2 Layer, Thomas O. Mcconkie

Theses and Dissertations

Initial investigation of Moxtek wire grid polarizers composed of Al and coated with SiO2 - SiX - SiO2 (where SiX is used to indicate a Si rich layer whose complete composition is not to be disclosed for proprietary reasons) showed a growth of 3x in the inner (closest to Al) SiO2 layer after baking. Upon removing the X and varying rib composition and layering composition and geometries in 12 sets of before and after samples, no obvious growth was observed. Even baking the original unbaked sample yielded no growth. Our data suggest that the initial conclusion of buried oxide growth …

Student Teachers' Interactive Decisions With Respect To Student Mathematics Thinking, Jonathan J. Call Aug 2012

Student Teachers' Interactive Decisions With Respect To Student Mathematics Thinking, Jonathan J. Call

Theses and Dissertations

Teaching mathematics is a difficult and complicated task. For student teachers, who are extremely new to the mathematics classroom, this difficulty is magnified. One of the biggest challenges for student teachers is learning how to effectively use the student thinking that emerges during mathematics lessons. I report the results of a case study of two mathematics education student teachers. I focus on how they make decisions while teaching in order to use their students' mathematical thinking. I also present analysis of the student teachers' discourse patterns, the reasons they gave to justify these patterns, and how their reasons affected how …

A number of 40 Iranian female adolescents participated in the study. The participants were assigned to two experimental and two control groups randomly. This study used the pre-test and post-test, by using Jones’ Irrational Beliefs Test (Jones, 1969). Therapeutic sessions were held in 5 consecutive weeks, with two sessions a week. Each session lasted 90 minutes. The data were analyzed through the following statistical measures: (1) Gain Score Analysis (GSA); (2) …

Mitigation Of Shoulder-Surfing Attack On Picture-Based Passwords Using Falsifying Authentication Methods / Por Lip Yee, Lip Yee Por Aug 2012

Mitigation Of Shoulder-Surfing Attack On Picture-Based Passwords Using Falsifying Authentication Methods / Por Lip Yee, Lip Yee Por

Student Works (2010-2019)

Over the years, various picture-based password systems were proposed to exploit the utility of pictures for user authentication. However, there are problems associated with these picture-based password authentication systems such as: vulnerability to security threats, and users’ memorability of the passwords. This research was undertaken to develop methods to mitigate shoulder-surfing attack. Two falsifying authentication methods using: (i) penup event and neighbouring connectivity manipulation; and (ii) partial password selection and metaheuristic randomisation algorithm methods, were proposed. The first and second proposed methods were incorporated into the proposed Background Pass-Go (BPG) system and Visual Identification Protocol Professional (VIP Pro) system respectively. …

Maintenance Of Rainwater Harvesting (Rwh) System In Malaysia / Hafsah Yahaya, Yahaya Hafsah

Student Works (2010-2019)

The application of Rainwater harvesting (RWH) system in Malaysia is still considered as a new phenomenon. However, with the support and effort of government in promoting the application of RWH in building, the number of building using the RWH is increased gradually. The system has been applied for various types of building such as housing, institutional and commercial. Even though the application of RWH is ongoing, there is no specific guideline in maintaining RWH. Maintenance performance is the key aspect in sustaining the RWH system. With the initial investment in installing the RWH, the organization must be able to monitor …

Factors Affecting Time Performance Of Refurbishment Projects In Singapore / Chew Lee Fuan, Lee Fuan Chew

Student Works (2010-2019)

Refurbishment is becoming an important economic driver in Singapore’s construction industry due to existence of high number of ageing buildings, limited vacant land for new development and the rapid changes of technology used. There are limitations and even drawbacks to these efforts as the time required to complete the refurbishment projects is frequently greater than the time originally specified in the contract. The main purpose of the study is to identify factors affecting the time performance for refurbishment projects in Singapore. This study used mixed method approach with quantitative as the main data. Semistructured interviews that involved twenty projects were …

A Study On Contrastive Rhetoric In English Writing And The Myside Bias / Atiyeh Kamyabi Gol, Atiyeh Kamyabi Gol

Student Works (2010-2019)

One effective method for conveying one’s thoughts and ideas is through writing. Having the ability to write effectively is important to both achieve and also to demonstrate academic success (Leki and Carson, 1994). Many scholars believe that cultural backgrounds play a vital role in how an individual writes. With the growing number of Iranian students studying overseas, it is necessary to see whether the Persian rhetorical culture does in fact influence students' English writing. In this study, the researcher aims to investigate the style differences between English and Persian writing and to determine whether participating Iranian EFL students transfer Persian …
