“The Road Not Taken” – Israeli Teachers’ Reactions To Top-Down Educational Reform, Roxana G. Reichman, Shlomit Artzi

The Qualitative Report

The authors have investigated teachers’ reactions towards an imposed reform initiated by the Israeli Ministry of Education in collaboration with one of two teachers’ unions based on the messages and letters sent by high school teachers to an internet forum during a teachers’ strike which took place between October and December of 2007. This study is the result of collaborative work between a teacher educator and a veteran teacher studying towards her Master of Education degree in Learning and Instruction. The research question was: What were the teachers’ attitudes regarding the “New Horizon” reform as conveyed on an internet forum …

Cold Case Homicides: An Examination Of Clearance Factors, Matthew M. Lunn Aug 2012

Cold Case Homicides: An Examination Of Clearance Factors, Matthew M. Lunn

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

The killing of one individual by another is something in our culture that garners a lot of attention from the media as well as community leaders. Law enforcement agencies have a duty to find resolution to these crimes. Yet, even with the rapid growth of forensics and the technology associated with it, there are still cases that go unsolved. These cases are commonly referred to as cold case homicides. In order to evaluate whether forensic evidence or investigative technique plays a larger role in the clearance of cold case homicides, a retrospective study was conducted to examine previously solved cold …

Sex In Rotrou’S Theater: Performance And Disorder, Nina Ekstein Aug 2012

Sex In Rotrou’S Theater: Performance And Disorder, Nina Ekstein

Modern Languages and Literatures Faculty Research

Sexual desire is ubiquitous in all theater. It follows that virtually all theatrical traditions struggle with the issue of the representation of that desire onstage. The French stage of the 1630s and Jean Rotrou's theater of that period in particular constitute an unusual moment of relative freedom before the imposition of the bienséances banished sexual activity from the stage. What I propose is a theatrical reading of sex in Rotrou's plays, a tripartite examination of dramatic strategy: how Rotrou foregrounds the scandalous by direct depiction of sexuality onstage; how at other moments he moves to attenuate its prurient force by …

Using Social Media To Enhance Learning Through Collaboration In Higher Education: A Case Study, Marianne Mcgarry Wolf, Mitch Wolf, Tom Frawley, Ann Torres, Shane Wolf

Agribusiness

Bradley and McDonald in a Harvard Business Review Blog discuss the difference between knowledge management and social media. They indicate that knowledge management is when company management tells employees what they need to know. In higher education faculty practice knowledge management by telling the students what they need to know. Social media is a method peers use to show connections the content they think is important. Bradley and McDonald believe that organizations can gain value from social media through mass collaboration. Mass collaboration occurs with “social media technology, a compelling purpose, and a focus on forming communities” (Bradley and McDonald, …

Impact Of A Case Management Program On Immigrants' Health Status And Access To Care, Nelly Kangethe Aug 2012

Impact Of A Case Management Program On Immigrants' Health Status And Access To Care, Nelly Kangethe

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

In the United States (U.S.), immigrants are among the fastest growing populations of all communities. Today, they comprise approximately 11% of the total U.S. population. Forty-three percent of immigrants are without insurance. They are also associated with higher numbers of untreated medical conditions, fewer interactions with the health care system, and receiving health care through emergency departments (ER). The consequences of these practices include increases in health care costs, changes from preventive care to emergency treatment, delays in identifying illnesses until later, and higher disease prevalence. Case managers are frequently faced with immigrants' concerns regarding access to care and prevention …

Gut Microbiome Composition Is Linked To Whole Grain-Induced Immunological Improvements, Ines Martinez, James M. Lattimer, Kelcie L. Hubach, Jennifer A. Case, Junyi Yang, Casey G. Weber, Julie A. Louk, Devin J. Rose, Gayaneh Kyureghian, Daniel A. Peterson, Mark D. Haub, Jens Walter

Food for Health: Publications

The involvement of the gut microbiota in metabolic disorders, and the ability of whole grains to affect both host metabolism and gut microbial ecology, suggest that some benefits of whole grains are mediated through their effects on the gut microbiome. Nutritional studies that assess the effect of whole grains on both the gut microbiome and human physiology are needed. We conducted a randomized cross-over trial with four-week treatments in which 28 healthy humans consumed a daily dose of 60 g of whole-grain barley (WGB), brown rice (BR), or an equal mixture of the two (BR+WGB), and characterized their impact on …

Protecting Our Natural Environment, Denise D. Fort Aug 2012

Protecting Our Natural Environment, Denise D. Fort

Faculty Scholarship

We don’t have a framework for protecting the ecological aspects of rivers and streams and that’s what I want to talk about today. We have failed to protect these natural values in our rivers, and my concern as we look toward the future is what sorts of steps Congress should take to stem further damage and to help us restore our rivers and streams.

My first point is that New Mexico should manage water demand rather than investing in large-scale water projects. My second recommendation and that is restoration. Restoration of the state’s rivers is something we had begun to …

About 21% of U.S. college students are overweight. However, aside from the 1995 National College Health Risk Behavior Survey (NCHRBS), the prevalence of health-risk behavior among college students has not been well characterized. The objective of this study is to investigate how college student’s body fruit and vegetable intake is affected by (1) demographics, (2) dietary habits, and (3) lifestyle. We collected data of college students enrolled at California Polytechnic State University. Sedentary habits such as watching TV, playing computer games, and surfing the web negatively impact both fruit and vegetable intake, which emphasizes the need to improve on-campus health …

Does Discounting Work In The Lodging Industry?, Robertico R. Croes, Kelly J. Semrad Aug 2012

Does Discounting Work In The Lodging Industry?, Robertico R. Croes, Kelly J. Semrad

Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

The central intent of this econometric case study analysis is to examine the relationship between discounting room rates and hotel financial performance. The study provides a theoretical framework that investigates the fundamentals of discounting and empirically assesses the efficacy of the discounting process in the lodging industry. The study adopts an error correction model to properly account for the dynamics of the industry. The results indicate that the variables may be modeled as an integrated process and which are linked in the long run and also possess a short-term relationship. The research findings suggest that discounting works both in the …

Microbiological Components In Mainstream And Sidestream Cigarette Smoke, Lennart Larsson, Christina Pehrson, Tenzin Dechen, Mardi Crane-Godreau Aug 2012

Microbiological Components In Mainstream And Sidestream Cigarette Smoke, Lennart Larsson, Christina Pehrson, Tenzin Dechen, Mardi Crane-Godreau

Dartmouth Scholarship

Research has shown that tobacco smoke contains substances of microbiological origin such as ergosterol (a fungal membrane lipid) and lipopolysaccharide (LPS) (in the outer membrane of Gram-negative bacteria). The aim of the present study was to compare the amounts of ergosterol and LPS in the tobacco and mainstream (MS) and sidestream (SS) smoke of some popular US cigarettes. We measured LPS 3-hydroxy fatty acids and fungal biomass biomarker ergosterol in the tobacco and smoke from cigarettes of 11 popular brands purchased in the US. University of Kentucky reference cigarettes were also included for comparison.

Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The current bone autograft procedure for cleft palate repair presents several disadvantages such as limited availability, additional invasive surgery, and donor site morbidity. The present preliminary study evaluates the mineralization potential of electrospun polydioxanone:nano-hydroxyapatite: fibrinogen (PDO: nHA: Fg) blended scaffolds in different simulated body fluids (SBF). Scaffolds were fabricated by blending PDO: nHA: Fg in the following percent by weight ratios: 100: 0: 0, 50: 25: 25, 50: 50: 0, 50: 0: 50, 0: 0: 100, and 0: 50: 50. Samples were immersed in (conventional (c), revised (r), ionic (i), and modified (m)) SBF for 5 and 14 days to …

The Mental Lexicon In Students Of Non-Spoken Languages: A Case Study With Ancient Greek And Latin, Randall C. Meister Aug 2012

The Mental Lexicon In Students Of Non-Spoken Languages: A Case Study With Ancient Greek And Latin, Randall C. Meister

Student Works

The unique pedagogical circumstances and uses of non-spoken languages (such as Ancient Greek and Latin) offer other facets to current models of L2 mental lexicon, which, up until this point in academic dialogue, have focused on bilinguals, who produce their language. While empirical evidence from an array of studies (see Cielslicka-Ratajczak, 1994) favors an integrated system of interwoven phonological, semantic, and categorical information all working together to influence production and comprehension, the elements of L2 organization within the context of non-spoken ancient languages remains underexplored, yet may offer further evidence for the organization of mental L2 lexical. My current study …

Beta-Testing The “Particular Machine”: The Machine-Or-Transformation Test In Peril And Its Impact On Cloud Computing, Richard M. Lee Aug 2012

Beta-Testing The “Particular Machine”: The Machine-Or-Transformation Test In Peril And Its Impact On Cloud Computing, Richard M. Lee

Duke Law & Technology Review

This Issue Brief examines recent cases addressing the patent eligibility of computer-implemented method claims and their implications for the development of cloud computing technologies. Despite the Supreme Court’s refusal to endorse the machine-or-transformation test as the exclusive patent eligibility inquiry, lower courts have continued to invalidate method claims using a stringent “particular machine” requirement alongside the requisite abstract ideas analysis. This Issue Brief argues that 1) post-Bilski v. Kappos cases have failed to elucidate what constitutes a particular machine for computer-implemented methods; 2) in light of substantial variance among Federal Circuit judges’ Section 101 jurisprudence, the application of the particular …

Anti-Cancer Activity And Mutagenic Potential Of Novel Copper (Ii) Quinolinone Schiff Base Complexes In Hepatocarinoma Cells, Brian Duff, Venkat Reddy Thangella, Bernadette Creaven, Maureen Walsh, Denise Egan

Articles

This study determined the cytotoxic, cyto-selective and mutagenic potential of novel quinolinone Schiff base ligands and their corresponding copper(II) complexes in human-derived hepatic carcinoma cells (Hep-G2) and non-malignant human-derived hepatic cells (Chang). Results indicated that complexation of quinolinone Schiff bases with copper served to significantly enhance cytotoxicity. Here, the complex of (7E)-7-(3-ethoxy-2-hydroxybenzylideamino)-4-methylquinolin-2(1H)-one (TV117-FM) exhibited the lowest IC50 value (17.9 μM) following 96 h continuous exposure, which was comparable to cisplatin (15.0 μM). However, results revealed that TV117-FM lacked cytoselectivity over non-malignant cells. Additionally, the complex was minimally effluxed from cells via Pglycoprotein (P-gp) and was shown to be non-mutagenic …

Role Of Glutathione In Lung Retention Of 99mtc-Hexamethylpropyleneamine Oxime In Two Unique Rat Models Of Hyperoxic Lung Injury, Said H. Audi, David L. Roerig, Steven Thomas Haworth, Anne V. Clough Aug 2012

Role Of Glutathione In Lung Retention Of 99mtc-Hexamethylpropyleneamine Oxime In Two Unique Rat Models Of Hyperoxic Lung Injury, Said H. Audi, David L. Roerig, Steven Thomas Haworth, Anne V. Clough

Biomedical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

Rat exposure to 60% O2 for 7 days (hyper-60) or to >95% O2 for 2 days followed by a 24-hour in room air (hyper-95R) confers susceptibility or tolerance, respectively, of the otherwise lethal effects of subsequent exposure to 100% O2. The objective of this study was to determine if lung retention of the radiopharmaceutical agent 99mTc-HMPAO (hexamethylpropyleneamine oxime) is differentially altered in hyper-60 and hyper-95R rats. Tissue retention of HMPAO is dependent on intracellular content of the antioxidant glutathione (GSH) and mitochondrial function. HMPAO was injected i.v. in anesthetized rats and planar images were acquired. …
