Γ-Synuclein Interacts With Phospholipase Cβ2 To Modulate G Protein Activation, Urszula Golebiewska, Yuanjian Guo, Narindra Khalikaprasad, Cassandra Zurawsky, V. Siddhartha Yerramilli, Suzanne Scarlata

Publications and Research

Phospholipase Cβ2 (PLC β2) is activated by G proteins and generates calcium signals in cells. PLCβ2 is absent in normal breast tissue, but is highly expressed in breast tumors where its expression is correlated with the progression and migration of the tumor. This pattern of expression parallels the expression of the breast cancer specific gene protein 1 which is also known as γ-synuclein. The cellular function of γ-synuclein and the role it plays in proliferation are unknown. Here, we determined whether γ-synuclein can interact with PLCβ2 and affect its activity. Using co-immunprecitation and co-immunofluorescence, we find that in both benign …

The Effect Of Using Technology And Self-Monitoring To Teach Basic Facts To Children At Risk, Jennifer Ellis Aug 2012

The Effect Of Using Technology And Self-Monitoring To Teach Basic Facts To Children At Risk, Jennifer Ellis

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to investigate whether or not the use of technology would increase automaticity of basic subtraction facts with "at risk" students and whether or not self-monitoring would motivate "at risk" students to improve their math scores to achieve automaticity of basic subtraction facts. Participants included four "at-risk" second graders from an elementary school in a small suburban community in southern New Jersey. The study took place over 11 weeks and was conducted by the classroom teacher. The first week consisted of collecting baseline data followed by five weeks of students using the Everyday Mathematics online …

Transforming Regular Classroom Instruction To Differentiate For Gifted And Highly Capable Learners, Stephanie Brown Aug 2012

Transforming Regular Classroom Instruction To Differentiate For Gifted And Highly Capable Learners, Stephanie Brown

Theses and Dissertations

This qualitative action research study documented the transformation of a small suburban school district from an educational culture focused on minimal levels of achievement reflective of No Child Left Behind to one valuing the continuous progress of all levels of learners. The participant-researcher led teachers in third through seventh grades with instructional program changes in social studies and science that implemented advanced differentiation using a curriculum compacting model. The two-fold purpose of the study explored how teacher engagement in an effective professional development program impacted their practice and disposition toward meeting the needs of gifted learners, while seeking information regarding …

Schmidtea Mediterranea Planaris As A Novel Animal Model For Investigating The Dynamics Of Nervous System Development In Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder, Jesse Lowe Aug 2012

Schmidtea Mediterranea Planaris As A Novel Animal Model For Investigating The Dynamics Of Nervous System Development In Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder, Jesse Lowe

Theses and Dissertations

Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) is a prevalent developmental disease that is caused by excess in utero exposure to ethanol. The importance of timing and dosage of ethanol has been elucidated by previous investigations conducted with humans, rodents, and other model organisms, but challenges associated with determining functional deficiencies have necessitated the introduction of a novel animal model for investigating the dynamics of FASD. In this thesis, we propose that the freshwater flatworm planarian species, Schmidtea mediterranea, has the capability to fulfill this need. Planaria have the ability to completely regenerate fragments into intact, functional animals, and in these studies, …

Search Me: Eastern Michigan University's Journey Through The Highs And Lows Of Implementing The Summon Discovery Tool, Jackie Wrosch, Karen Rogers-Collins, Michael V. Barnes, William Marino

Faculty Scholarship - University Library

In early 2011, Eastern Michigan University (EMU) began implementation of the Summon Web-scale discovery service from Serials Solutions. This case study will explore the challenges and successes of the implementation and launch process. Topics covered will include project management overview; integration of Summon with our ILS, link resolver, and Automated Retrieval Collection (ARC); mapping of the library's print collection to the Summon interface; issues that arose with the ingest of our titles; incorporation into the library's daily workflow; maintenance of e-resource holdings in two separate knowledge bases; and integration into public services reference and teaching.

Multifidus Muscle Size And Atrophy Among Dancers With And Without Low Back Pain, Alyssa Leann Smyres Aug 2012

Multifidus Muscle Size And Atrophy Among Dancers With And Without Low Back Pain, Alyssa Leann Smyres

Theses and Dissertations

Design: A single-blinded, cross-sectional observational study.

Objectives: Examine muscle cross-sectional area and symmetry of the lumbar multifidus muscle in elite ballroom dancers with and without low back pain (LBP).

Background: The incidence of LBP among elite ballroom dancers is high and at Brigham Young University is 57%. Previous research has linked lumbar multifidus muscle atrophy to low back pain; however this relationship has not been examined in ballroom dancers.

Methods and Measures: Lumbar multifidus cross-sectional area was assessed at rest on the right and left side at levels L1-L5. Thirty-seven subjects (age 24 ± 3.2 years; height, 172.8 ± 11.3 …

Bridging The Gap: An Exploratory Study Of Corporate Social Responsibility Among Smes In Singapore, Mui Hean Lee, Angela Ka Mak, A. Pang Aug 2012

Bridging The Gap: An Exploratory Study Of Corporate Social Responsibility Among Smes In Singapore, Mui Hean Lee, Angela Ka Mak, A. Pang

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Corporate social responsibility (CSR) among small-medium enterprises (SME) is an overlookedarea, despite the latter’s emerging prominence as an economic player. To provide a comprehensiveanalysis of the CSR landscape among Singapore SMEs, a triangulation of 15 in-depth interviews anda self-administered Web survey was conducted among 113 senior executives from top 500 SingaporeSMEs (27.2% response). Key findings include (a) moderate awareness but low comprehension ofCSR; (b) engagement relevance to immediate stakeholders; (c) individual values, stakeholderrelationships, and governmental influences as main drivers; and (d) lack of various resources askey barriers. Implications and future research directions are discussed.

Fluorescene Imaging Of Mouse Sperm / Noorain H., H. Nooraain Aug 2012

Fluorescene Imaging Of Mouse Sperm / Noorain H., H. Nooraain

Student Works (2010-2019)

The protocol for detecting acrosome in mouse sperm was developed by using two types of fluorescent dyes namely fluorescein conjugated Pisum sativum agglutinin (FITC-PSA) and rhodamine conjugated Lens culinaris agglutinin (TRITC-LCA). The results showed that mean percentages of acrosome intact sperm incubated in vitro were considerably low. After one-hour incubation there were 43.20±2.83%, 31.81±8.44% and 30.90±4.15% for ICR, C57/6J and F1 sperm, respectively. Intact acrosome in ICR sperm was significantly reduced (p<0.05) to 16.95±4.23% after two-hour incubation, however, insignificant reduction (p>0.05) was found for C57BL/6J and F1 sperm, which were 30.03±2.06% and 20.93±3.81%, respectively. The results showed that both dyes FITC-PSA and TRITC-LCA suitably stained the mouse sperm …
