Dynamical Reaction Pathways In Eley-Rideal Recombination Of Nitrogen From W(100), Ernesto Quintas-Sánchez, P. Larrégaray, C. Crespos, L. Martin-Gondre, J. Rubayo-Soneira, J. C. Rayez Aug 2012

Dynamical Reaction Pathways In Eley-Rideal Recombination Of Nitrogen From W(100), Ernesto Quintas-Sánchez, P. Larrégaray, C. Crespos, L. Martin-Gondre, J. Rubayo-Soneira, J. C. Rayez

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

The scattering of atomic nitrogen over a N-pre-adsorbed W(100) surface is theoretically described in the case of normal incidence off a single adsorbate. Dynamical reaction mechanisms, in particular Eley-Rideal (ER) abstraction, are scrutinized in the 0.1-3.0 eV collision energy range and the influence of temperature on reactivity is considered between 300 and 1500 K. Dynamics simulations suggest that, though non-activated reaction pathways exist, the abstraction process exhibits a significant collision energy threshold (0.5 eV). Such a feature, which has not been reported so far in the literature, is the consequence of a repulsive interaction between the impinging and the pre-adsorbed …

A Signal Processing Approach For Preprocessing And 3d Analysis Of Airborne Small-Footprint Full Waveform Lidar Data, Jiaying Wu

Theses

The extraction of structural object metrics from a next generation remote sensing modality, namely waveform light detection and ranging (LiDAR), has garnered increasing interest from the remote sensing research community. However, a number of challenges need to be addressed before structural or 3D vegetation modeling can be accomplished. These include proper processing of complex, often off-nadir waveform signals, extraction of relevant waveform parameters that relate to vegetation structure, and from a quantitative modeling perspective, 3D rendering of a vegetation object from LiDAR waveforms. Three corresponding, broad research objectives therefore were addressed in this dissertation. Firstly, the raw incoming LiDAR waveform …

Small Spacecraft Design For The Grail Mission, Stuart Spath

Small Satellite Conference

On September 10, 2011, two identical spacecraft were launched from the Kennedy Space Center Space Launch Complex-17B on their 4-month, low-energy trajectory to the moon. The primary objective of the Gravity Recovery and Interior Laboratory (GRAIL) mission was to collect a global gravity map of the moon with a resolution approximately 1000 times better than existing knowledge. Lockheed Martin had the responsibility of designing, developing, assembling, testing, launching, and operating the twin spacecraft. With a dry mass of 200.6 kg each, these GRAIL spacecraft were among the lightest ever to be selected for a NASA Discovery-class mission. This paper discusses …

The Canadian Advanced Nanospace Experiment 7 (Canx-7) Demonstration Mission: De-Orbiting Nano- And Microspacecraft, Barbara Shmuel, Jesse Hiemstra, Vincent Tarantini, Fiona Singarayar, Grant Bonin, Robert Zee

Small Satellite Conference

As the number of objects in Earth orbit grows, the international satellite community faces a growing problem associated with orbital debris and space collision avoidance. In September 2007, the Inter-Agency Space Debris Coordination Committee (IADC) recommended that satellites de-orbit within 25 years after the completion of their mission, or within 30 years of launch if they cannot be parked in less dense (“graveyard”) orbits. Governments around the world are introducing procedures to implement the recommendations of the IADC, and consequently, this requirement poses a significant programmatic risk for new space missions, especially those requiring rapid, responsive, short missions in low …

Development Of Multiple Parameter-Based Cost Model For Small Earth Observation Satellite, Jin Kang, Hongrae Kim, Young-Keun Chang Aug 2012

Development Of Multiple Parameter-Based Cost Model For Small Earth Observation Satellite, Jin Kang, Hongrae Kim, Young-Keun Chang

Small Satellite Conference

The satellite cost models developed based on total mass has been more widely used in the past, but many limitations often make them difficult to apply or achieve desired accuracy. In addition, the compounded errors of such models are further increased by the variety of the missions that these systems are designed to perform. For the new cost model presented in this paper, the scope of the proposed cost model has been limited to earth observation satellites. These systems are further divided into EO (electro-optical) and SAR (synthetic-aperture radar) satellites. The proposed model can be applied to satellites with masses …

Novasar – Bringing Radar Capability To The Disaster Monitoring Constellation, Philip Davies, Phil Whittaker, Rachel Bird, Luis Gomes, Ben Stern, Martin Sweeting, Martin Cohen, David Hall

Small Satellite Conference

Small satellites are playing an increasing role in addressing applications in Earth Observation for scientific, civil and military applications. With all optical systems, this leads to some obvious limitations to the time of day targets can be imaged, which geographic latitudes can be covered, and to a dependency on cloud cover. For some applications this limits the utility of space systems unless low-light and through-cloud imaging information can be obtained in a timely fashion by other cost-effective means. Typically, space based radar systems are significantly more complex, more expensive, and data is more difficult to utilise than equivalent optical systems. …
