Effects Of Alcohol On Rotary Pursuit Performance: A Gender Comparison, Donald M. Dougherty, James M. Bjork, Robert H. Bennett Aug 2012

Effects Of Alcohol On Rotary Pursuit Performance: A Gender Comparison, Donald M. Dougherty, James M. Bjork, Robert H. Bennett

The Psychological Record

For 6 days, 10 male and 10 female social drinkers performed a rotary pursuit task six times across each day under both placebo and alcohol-intoxicated conditions. Following a training period, O.35g/kg of alcohol or placebo beverages were administered 45 min before the second, third, and fourth sessions each day. In general, alcohol impaired the rotary pursuit performance of women more than that of men despite similar peak BAC levels. Results suggest no evidence of acute tolerance, evidenced by similar performance on the ascending and descending limbs of the BAC curve. However, results suggest that across the two alcohol administration days, …

Discrimination Of "Four" And "Two" By Pigeons, Shigeru Watanabe Aug 2012

Discrimination Of "Four" And "Two" By Pigeons, Shigeru Watanabe

The Psychological Record

Two pigeons learned to respond to four objects while withholding response to two objects. The birds maintained their numerical discrimination when new objects were introduced. They also maintained the discrimination when large and small objects were used to construct "2" and "4," and when different kinds of objects were mixed to make "2" and "4." The subjects responded most often to four objects when tested with one, two, three, four, and five objects in the generalization test after fourth discrimination task. These results suggest the ability of numerical discrimination in pigeons. Two other birds that were trained to peck two …

Anterior Hypothalamic Stimulation Decreases Serum Immunoglobulin G Concentrations, Paul L. Lambert, Ernest H. Harrell, Kimberly Kelly Aug 2012

Anterior Hypothalamic Stimulation Decreases Serum Immunoglobulin G Concentrations, Paul L. Lambert, Ernest H. Harrell, Kimberly Kelly

The Psychological Record

Neuroimmunological research has indicated that hypothalamic structures play an important role in the modulation of immunoresponsivity. We report that electrical stimulation of the anterior hypothalamus decreases the concentration of Immunoglobulin G (lgG) in rat serum. Male Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly assigned to either an anterior or dummy electrode group. Following the determination of baseline IgG concentrations animals were placed in an operant chamber where electrical stimulation was delivered to animals in the anterior group. Animals in the dummy electrode group were placed in an operant chamber but received no brain stimulation through the attached cable. IgG concentrations were determined for …

Effects Of Predator-Induced Stress And Age On Working Memory In Rats, Jon L. Williams, Shelley L. Baker, Jennifer E. Gress, Bennet Givens Aug 2012

Effects Of Predator-Induced Stress And Age On Working Memory In Rats, Jon L. Williams, Shelley L. Baker, Jennifer E. Gress, Bennet Givens

The Psychological Record

The effects of age and predator-induced stress, by exposing rats to a cat, were examined during subsequent testing of spatial working memory. Male rats (3 months and 20 months of age) were trained on a spatial delayed-alternation task using an elevated T maze. After subgroups were given intermittent protected-exposure sessions over a 3-day period to cats or to a control condition, they were tested on the working memory task. The old rats took more trials to reach training criterion. Overall, both stress-exposed groups exhibited a decline in accuracy 24 hr later and recovered completely during the subsequent test sessions. Surprisingly, …

Cubesat Aerodynamic Stability At Iss Altitude And Inclination, Samir Rawashdeh Aug 2012

Cubesat Aerodynamic Stability At Iss Altitude And Inclination, Samir Rawashdeh

Small Satellite Conference

At altitudes below 500km, satellites experience a significant amount of aerodynamic drag that can be utilized to stabilize satellites to align with the relative wind direction. Designing a spacecraft such that the center of pressure is behind the center of mass provides an aerodynamic restoring torque, that in combination with an oscillation damping system, provides stability and alignment with the spacecraft velocity vector. Passive aerodynamic stability and damping has been demonstrated on orbit by the Soviet Union on Cosmos-149 and Cosmos-320 and by NASA on the PAMS spacecraft which was deployed from STS-77. This paper discusses aerodynamic stability solutions for …

Effects Of Differing Instructional Histories On The Resurgence Of Rule-Following, Mark R. Dixon, Linda J. Hayes Aug 2012

Effects Of Differing Instructional Histories On The Resurgence Of Rule-Following, Mark R. Dixon, Linda J. Hayes

The Psychological Record

Attempts to explain differences between human and nonhuman sensitivity to changing contingencies have centered around humans' language ability, and more specifically on instructional control. The present study was conducted to investigate the role of various histories of rule-governance on the resurgence of rule-following during extinction. Results illustrated that specific rule-following histories reduced trials to criterion and enhanced extinction induced resurgence, when compared to general rule-following or no rule-following histories. A concurrent verbal "think-aloud" procedure demonstrated that these results were caused not entirely by experimenter-provided rules, but also by subjects' generation of self-rules. Implications for the utility of instructional control with …

Superstitious Behavior And Response Stereotypy Prevent The Emergence Of Efficient Rule-Governed Behavior In Humans, Richard Pisacreta Aug 2012

Superstitious Behavior And Response Stereotypy Prevent The Emergence Of Efficient Rule-Governed Behavior In Humans, Richard Pisacreta

The Psychological Record

This study examined whether humans would learn to solve simple problems by applying an efficient rule, that is, concept teaming. Twenty-four college students were shown a series of five letter combinations created from the first three letters of the alphabet (A, B, and C), presented on a computer terminal (e.g., ACAAA). Pressing computer keyboard keys changed the letters of the alphabet. When all five letters were identical (e.g., AAAAA), the computer informed the subject that they were correct. The most efficient solution to each problem (the rule) was to change only letters that did not match the majority of the …

Effects Of Response Cost In Computerized Programmed Instruction, Kevin J. Munson, John Crosbie Aug 2012

Effects Of Response Cost In Computerized Programmed Instruction, Kevin J. Munson, John Crosbie

The Psychological Record

Punishment improves discrimination learning, and programmed instruction is an elaborate form of discrimination training, so the present experiment assessed whether punishment also improves performance on programmed instruction. The cost of such improvement in terms of increased training time and dissatisfaction of subjects also was assessed. Three college students completed a computerized version of Holland and Skinner's (1961) programmed text. One subject received a two-component multiple schedule within a reversal design, and two subjects received the same two-component multiple-schedule without a return-to-baseline phase. During baseline, subjects received 5¢ for each frame completed, regardless of whether responses were correct or incorrect. Multiple-schedule …

Punishment Generalization Gradients With Humans, Jennifer O'Donnell, John Crosbie Aug 2012

Punishment Generalization Gradients With Humans, Jennifer O'Donnell, John Crosbie

The Psychological Record

Electric-shock punishment produces stimulus-generalization gradients with animals. The purpose of the present experiments was to determine whether response-cost punishment produces similar gradients with humans. In Experiment 1, psychophysical procedures were used to generate a set of 10 horizontal lines that differ in length such that adjacent lines were indiscriminable, then reinforcement gradients were obtained with those lines to show that gradients can be produced with those stimuli. In Experiment 2, subjects pressed a lever for points exchangeable for money on a VI schedule in the presence of each stimulus, then points were lost immediately after each response in the presence …

The Operant-Respondent Distinction Revisited: Toward An Understanding Of Stimulus Equivalence, Ruth Anne Rehfeldt, Linda J. Hayes Aug 2012

The Operant-Respondent Distinction Revisited: Toward An Understanding Of Stimulus Equivalence, Ruth Anne Rehfeldt, Linda J. Hayes

The Psychological Record

The distinction between operant and respondent behavior classes has received considerable attention throughout the history of behavior analysis. Some have contended that because operant and respondent processes share a number of similarities, the distinction should be dropped. Others, for lack of a better theoretical alternative, have supported the continued distinction. It is suggested that the failure of behavior analysts to recognize the ever-present role of respondent relations in operant conditioning experiments may be impeding the formulation of an effective explanation for stimulus equivalence, which has been investigated primarily as an operant phenomenon. Conceptual issues historically relevant to the operant-respondent distinction …

New Methodologies For The Thermal Modelling Of Cubesats, Philip Reiss Aug 2012

New Methodologies For The Thermal Modelling Of Cubesats, Philip Reiss

Small Satellite Conference

One of the main threats for the success of a CubeSat mission is the unbalanced distribution of thermal loads caused by internal and external heat sources. In order to design an appropriate thermal subsystem that can cope with these loads a detailed analysis is required. However, currently available thermal software is considered as being less convenient for the application with CubeSats, mainly due to the complexity of the modelling process. This paper examines thermal engineering issues for CubeSats and describes the development of new methodologies to realise a more appropriate thermal modelling and analysis specifically for such systems. This includes …

Automated Proximity Operations Using Image-Based Relative Navigation, Luke Walker Aug 2012

Automated Proximity Operations Using Image-Based Relative Navigation, Luke Walker

Small Satellite Conference

This paper describes a system for relative navigation and automated proximity operations for a microsatellite using continuous thrust propulsion and low-cost visible and infrared imagers. Image processing algorithms provide range, range rate, and spherical angle estimates relative to a target spacecraft using knowledge of the target spacecraft’s geometry. A differential correction batch filter is used to provide relative navigation and state estimation. These state estimates are used to provide input for the automated control of the chaser spacecraft via a Linear Quadratic Regulator. Propulsive maneuvers are accomplished via low-thrust, non-throttleable thrusters using pulse-width modulation and thrust vectoring. A waypoint logic …

A Precise Attitude Determination And Control Strategy For Small Astrometry Satellite “Nano-Jasmine”, Takayuki Hosonuma

Small Satellite Conference

Intelligent Space Systems Laboratory (ISSL) Universityof Tokyo has developed a 35 kgastrometry satellite,“Nano-JASMINE”(Nano JAPAN Astrometry Satellite Mission for INfraredExploration)in cooperation with National Astronomical Observatoryof Japan (NAOJ). In the Nano-JASMINE mission, the satellite attitude spin rate should be controlled to an accuracy of 4 × 10−7 rad/s duringthe observation. To accomplish such severe attitude stabilization, we have developed two novelmethods. The first method is amagnetic disturbance estimation and compensation method. In conventional large satellites, a Magnetic torqueisnot the dominant attitude disturbance. However, in small satellites, the magnetic torqueis the dominant attitude disturbance. This is becausethe moments of inertia of small satellites are …

Overview Of Nano-Satellite Environmental Tests Standardization Project: Test Campaign And Standard Draft, Mengu Cho, Hirokazu Masui, Toru Hatamura, Koichi Date, Shigekatsu Horii, Shoichi Obata

Small Satellite Conference

To improve the reliability of nano-satellites while keeping their advantages, low-cost and fast-delivery, a new way of thinking about environment test is necessary. In the present paper, the word of “nano-satellite” means a satellite whose weight and size is, but not limited to, typically less than 50kg and 50cm, respectively. The nano-satellites intend to achieve the low-cost and fast-delivery by extensive use of non-space-qualified commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) parts and components. Currently there is confusion among developers and customers about how the environment tests should be done for nano-satellites. A new government funded project started whose objective is to establish international standards …

Radiation damage caused by interactions with high-energy particles in the Van Allen Radiation Belts is a leading cause of component failures for satellites in low and medium Earth orbits (LEO, MEO). Very Low Frequency (VLF) electromagnetic waves have been shown to couple energy to high energy radiation belt particles and change their properties. For example, data from the IMAGE (Imager for Magnetopause-to-Aurora Global Exploration) satellite suggest that the gap between the inner and outer Van Allen belts is caused by lightning, which naturally generates VLF waves that scatter the pitch angle of high energy particles, such that they rejoin the …
