A Case Study Of A Therapeutic Day School's Implementation Of Response To Intervention: The Implementation Process And Impact On Student Behavioral And Academic Functioning, Sophia Duffy

College of Science and Health Theses and Dissertations

Response to Intervention (Rtl) has been shown to be effective in improving student academic outcomes, and evaluations of the implementation process have been done in traditional. school settings. Research on Rtl implementation and effectiveness has excluded nontraditional school settings. Using a case study, mixed methods approach, this study fills this gap in the literature by evaluating the implementation process and effectiveness ofRtl at a therapeutic day school. Similar themes regarding the implementation process were found in this study as was found in traditional schools, such as implementation fidelity, importance of teacher training, challenges v.ith well defmed frameworks and practices, significance …

Investigation Of Thermal Regimes Of Lakes Used For Water Supply And Examination Of Drinking Water System In Kotzebue, Alaska, Tereza Bendlova Aug 2012

Investigation Of Thermal Regimes Of Lakes Used For Water Supply And Examination Of Drinking Water System In Kotzebue, Alaska, Tereza Bendlova

Engineering

Many villages in Arctic Alaska rely on lakes for water supply, such as the Alaskan City of Kotzebue, and these lakes may be sensitive to climate variability and change, particularly thermal regimes and corresponding effects on water quality. Thus, I initiated a study of water supply lakes in Kotzebue to collect data for developing a model to hindcast summer thermal regimes. Surface (Tws) and bed (Twb) temperature data collected from two water supply lakes and two control lakes from June 22nd-August 28th 2011 showed a similar pattern in relation to air temperature (Ta) and solar radiation with more frequent stratification …

Investigation Of A Tensile Cycloidal Rotor And Cam Cyclic Pitching Mechanism, Kelsey H. Elfering Aug 2012

Investigation Of A Tensile Cycloidal Rotor And Cam Cyclic Pitching Mechanism, Kelsey H. Elfering

Engineering

A cycloidal rotor is characterized by an airfoil span parallel to the axis of rotation. A tensile cycloidal rotor places the airfoils under tensile forces only, thereby attempting to utilize the inertial forces on the rotor to minimize airfoil deflection and overall weight. A prototype rotor was built that meets the micro air vehicle (MAV) size constraint of 15.24 centimeters (6 inches). A new cam path design was used as a pitching mechanism, which reduced overall design weight and mechanical power requirements, and allowed for curved flat plate airfoils and angled airfoil structural supports. The cycloidal rotor was designed to …

New Microfabrication Method For Prototyping Integrated Microfluidic Modules With Sr-3000 And Polydimethylsiloxane (Pdms), Thomas Frederick Gerlach Aug 2012

New Microfabrication Method For Prototyping Integrated Microfluidic Modules With Sr-3000 And Polydimethylsiloxane (Pdms), Thomas Frederick Gerlach

Engineering

This thesis presents the first work on the fabrication of microfluidic modules with SR-3000 Rayzist photoresist paper and polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS). Chapter 1 of the thesis is on the analysis of elemental composition of SR-3000. By using the X-Ray Fluorescence spectrometer we found the SR-3000 sheet is enriched with silicon, the key element for forming covalent bonding to PDMS. Chapters 2, 3,and 4 of the thesis is focused on the characterization of both the hydrophilicity of the plasma-treated SR-3000 surface and the bonding strength between SR-3000 and PDMS. Unfiltered air was used as the process gas for plasma-assisted bonding of SR-3000 …

Ray Tracing Applications For High-Frequency Radar: Characterizing Artificial Layers And Background Density Perturbations In The Ionosphere, Timothy E. Theurer Aug 2012

Ray Tracing Applications For High-Frequency Radar: Characterizing Artificial Layers And Background Density Perturbations In The Ionosphere, Timothy E. Theurer

Engineering

In this thesis a numerical method of calculating ground-scattered power from the results of a ray tracing analysis is presented. The method is based on a conservation of energy approach and offers advantages over an alternative method derived from the radar equation. The improved numerical method is used to investigate two different physical phenomena by comparison with measured ground-scattered power observed by a high-frequency (HF) radar located in Kodiak, AK that is part of the Super Dual Auroral Radar Network (SuperDARN). First, the effects of artificial electron density layers on observed ground scatter is studied through a comparison of simulated …

The Relation Of Spring Pollen Release To Weather In Fairbanks, Alaska, Theodore F. Fathauer Aug 2012

The Relation Of Spring Pollen Release To Weather In Fairbanks, Alaska, Theodore F. Fathauer

Atmospheric Sciences

Twenty-three years of pollen data for Fairbanks have been analyzed and related to meteorological data (temperature, wind, relative humidity and precipitation). The purpose of this research is to develop quantitative statistical relationships between weather parameters and the timing and magnitude of pollen release for four taxa native to the Fairbanks area (birch, alder spruce and grass). During the spring and early summer in Fairbanks, dry, sunny and breezy days are common. These conditions are ideal for establishing an unstable boundary layer and its accompanying convective circulation, which can loft large quantities of pollen into the atmosphere. The timing of pollen …

Interaction Effects Of Multiple Levels Of Disadvantage And Kinship Foster Care In African American Youth, Anne Rufa Aug 2012

Interaction Effects Of Multiple Levels Of Disadvantage And Kinship Foster Care In African American Youth, Anne Rufa

College of Science and Health Theses and Dissertations

Child welfare services' current practice is to attempt to identify kinship foster settings first when removing a child from their home, a practice used disproportionately for African American youth. In this study, potential contextual factors of foster homes (i.e., community environment, caregiver's age, caregiver's physical health) were identified as possible moderators of the relationship between the type of out-of-home placement (i.e., kinship, other out-of-home placement) used and changes in internalizing and externalizing scores in African American youth. Results confirm a significant increase in internalizing and externalizing scores when youth are placed in kinship foster homes with caregivers who are older …

The First Year College Experience: Predictors Of Natural Mentoring Relationships & Students' Academic Outcomes, Luciano Berardi Aug 2012

The First Year College Experience: Predictors Of Natural Mentoring Relationships & Students' Academic Outcomes, Luciano Berardi

College of Science and Health Theses and Dissertations

Literature on college mentoring suggests that mentoring relationships has a positive effect on college students’ outcomes (Crisp & Cruz, 2009; Jacobi, 1991). The purpose of this study was to examine the roles of parental attachment and help-seeking strategies in the number of mentoring relationships reported by college students and the role of mentoring in students’ adjustment to the first year transition to college. Moos’ (2002) theoretical framework is used to root the study on an ecological viewpoint of college transition, because it proposes that individual characteristics and the environment thought which a person transitions affect one another and influence individual …

The Role Of Attributions In Stereotype Threat Effects: Female Achievements In Stem Domains, Caitlyn Yantis Aug 2012

The Role Of Attributions In Stereotype Threat Effects: Female Achievements In Stem Domains, Caitlyn Yantis

College of Science and Health Theses and Dissertations

Despite some advances, the gender gap in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) fields persists. Stereotype threat has been cited as a debilitating phenomenon that may contribute to the underrepresentation of women in STEM domains (e.g., Ambady, Shih, Kim, & Pittinsky,2001). Using the attributional model of stereotypes (Reyna, 2000), the current work explores the role of attributions in a stereotype threat context. Seventy-two female undergraduates were randomly assigned to one of four attribution conditions to explain female detriments in logical reasoning: effort, ability, society, or no stereotype. All participants then completed a test of logical reasoning. Although previous research has …

Effects Of Timeframe On The Recall Reliability Of Me/Cfs Symptoms, Meredyth Evans Aug 2012

Effects Of Timeframe On The Recall Reliability Of Me/Cfs Symptoms, Meredyth Evans

College of Science and Health Theses and Dissertations

This study served as an investigation of the effects of symptom stability, timeframe length, and momentary symptom severity on the recall reliability of symptoms experienced by individuals with myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS). ME/CFS symptoms were assessed at four recall timeframes (right now, the past week, the past month, and the past six months) and at two assessment points. Analyses revealed that test-retest reliability was significantly stronger for recall of post-exertlonal malaise (PEM), headaches, and memory problems, when these symptoms were perceived to be stable over time rather than variable. It was also revealed that the optimal timeframe for variable …

Applicant Behavior On Internet Job Boards: The Effects Of Content And Style, Samuel Young Aug 2012

Applicant Behavior On Internet Job Boards: The Effects Of Content And Style, Samuel Young

College of Science and Health Theses and Dissertations

Although job boards are the largest single source of recruitment in the modern workplace, little research on what influences job seeker behavior has been conducted in this context. In order to address this gap in the literature, the present research draws on the theories of planned behavior and signaling theory to hypothesize a series of factors that may impact job seeker behavior. Despite theoretical support for many job posting characteristics, only formatting influenced job seeker behavior. Discussion of the implications and areas for future research are presented.
